Heterogeneous Real-Time & Secure Networks: TSN over Anything & TLS over Anything
- In these days, industrial communication comes with manifold requirements: (1) they need to be real-time, i.e. following the vendor independent Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) approach, (2) they must be secure, i.e. following the state-of-the-art technologies, like Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols, and (3) the different wired and wireless network types need to be much more integrated andIn these days, industrial communication comes with manifold requirements: (1) they need to be real-time, i.e. following the vendor independent Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) approach, (2) they must be secure, i.e. following the state-of-the-art technologies, like Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols, and (3) the different wired and wireless network types need to be much more integrated and managed in a unified way. A lot of research is currently executed on these three directions. However, the real challenge begins, if all these objectives have to be followed in a combined approach. This short paper gives an overview on the current state of the art with regard to end-to-end solutions for heterogeneous real-time and secure networks. It presents some solutions from the author’s team, most notably the approaches of TSN over Anything and TLS over Anything, and discusses open research questions. It is a summary of an invited keynote presentation at 2025 IEEE International Conference on Computer, Information, and Telecommunication Systems (CITS 2025) in Colmar, France.…
