  • The present paper describes the first research results with the finite element method (FEM) to the notch stress analysis of multiple notches in the drive shafts. It involves a circumferential groove in combination with a vertical hole. The second notch shape is a combination of a vertical hole in a shaft shoulder. In both cases, the hole is provided in the region of maximum stress concentrationThe present paper describes the first research results with the finite element method (FEM) to the notch stress analysis of multiple notches in the drive shafts. It involves a circumferential groove in combination with a vertical hole. The second notch shape is a combination of a vertical hole in a shaft shoulder. In both cases, the hole is provided in the region of maximum stress concentration or the peripheral groove of the shaft shoulder. The stress concentration factors are shown in diagrams. New approximate equations are set up for an accurate estimate of the stress concentration factors depending on the types of loads torsion, bending and tension/compression. The newfound FEM-results extend the qualitative and quantitative insights on the calculation methods in the existing literature about the calculation of the load bearing capacity of notched components. These results are used as the basis for further numerical investigations on the hitherto little-explored topic of "three-dimensional multiple notch effect" as well as to reduce the resulting stress concentrations.show moreshow less
