In order to be competitive, the processes must be constantly tested and optimised. Within this master thesis, the production of comfort actuators is analysed in terms of cost-effectiveness and capacity expansion and a concept for manufacturing improvement is developed. The concept development includes the first step of investigating the existing production of comfort actuators based on the process chain with respect to the degree of automation. A cycle time analysis of the actuator assembly locates the bottleneck at the manual workstation where the transfer carrier is assembled. A view at the production volume indicates the significant increase in the number of units from 2024 for the actuators with gear position on the right. An expansion in the level of automation of the existing final assembly is required in order to produce these production quantities and to compensate for the bottleneck. The cost-effective investment in automation means an increased amortisation period which varies from eight to 15 years depending on the number of units. A lower return on investment period can be achieved by the expansion of the production line with a higher degree of automation and a less cycle time. The required space for this extension of the production line is estimated at approximately 5.7 m, which can be carried out with a compact arrangement of the production stations. A list of requirements is used for concept development of the transfer system within the production line. Due to cost estimation and space demand, the concept with a transfer carrier is of higher value. With the planning concept for production improvement, a saving of 11.3 min will be achieved in the target time compared to the current state. The costs of the renovation measures is estimated at around € 950,000. The implementation of this extension is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2023.show moreshow less
