Flashcards are a well known and proven method to learn and memorise. Such a way of learning is perfectly suited for “learning on the way,” but carrying all the flashcards could be awkward. In this scenario, a mobile device (mobile phone) is an adequate solution. The new mobile device operating system Android from Google allows for writing multimedia-enriched applications.
Android is an operating system which was developed for use in smart mobile phones and is the current leader in this market. A lot of efforts are being spent to make Android available to the embedded world, as well. Many embedded systems do not have a local GUI and are therefore called headless devices. This paper presents the results of an analysis of the general suitability of Anroid in headless embedded systems and ponders the advantages and disadvantages. It focuses on the hardware related issues, i.e. to what extent Android supports hardware peripherals normally used in embedded systems.
Android is the most popular mobile operating system. Its omnipresence leads to the fact that it is also the most popular target amongst malware developers and other computer criminals. Hence, this thesis shows the security-relevant structures of Android’s system and application architecture. Furthermore, it provides laboratory exercises on various security-related issues to understand them not only theoretically but also deal with them in a practical way. In order to provide infrastructure-independent education, the exercises are based on Android Virtual Devices (AVDs).
