HPTLC (High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography) is a well known and versatile separation method which shows many advantages when compared to other separation techniques. The method is fast and inexpensive and does not need time-consuming pretreatments. For visualisation of the sample distribution on a HPTLC-plate we developed a new and sturdy HPTLC-scanner. The scanner allows simultaneous registrations of spectra in a range from 198 nm to 612 nm with a spectral resolution of better than 0.8 nm. The on-plate spatial resolution is better than 160 μm. The measurement of 450 spectra in one separation track does not need more than two minutes. The new diode-array scanner offers a fast survey over a TLC-separation and makes various chemometric applications possible. For compound identification a cross-correlation function is described to compare UV sample spectra with appropriate library data. The cross-correlation function herein described can also be used for purity testing. Unresolved peaks can be virtually separated by use of a least squares fit algorithm. In summary, the diode arry system delivers much more information than the commonly used TLC-scanner.
Wireless communication systems more and more become part of our daily live. Especially with the Internet of Things (IoT) the overall connectivity increases rapidly since everyday objects become part of the global network. For this purpose several new wireless protocols have arisen, whereas 6LoWPAN (IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area Networks) can be seen as one of the most important protocols within this sector. Originally designed on top of the IEEE802.15.4 standard it is a subject to various adaptions that will allow to use 6LoWPAN over different technologies; e.g. DECT Ultra Low Energy (ULE). Although this high connectivity offers a lot of new possibilities, there are several requirements and pitfalls coming along with such new systems. With an increasing number of connected devices the interoperability between different providers is one of the biggest challenges, which makes it necessary to verify the functionality and stability of the devices and the network. Therefore testing becomes one of the key components that decides on success or failure of such a system. Although there are several protocol implementations commonly available; e.g., for IoT based systems, there is still a lack of according tools and environments as well as for functional and conformance testing. This article describes the architecture and functioning of the proposed test framework based on Testing and Test Control Notation Version 3 (TTCN-3) for 6LoWPAN over ULE networks.
Training deep neural networks using backpropagation is very memory and computationally intensive. This makes it difficult to run on-device learning or fine-tune neural networks on tiny, embedded devices such as low-power micro-controller units (MCUs). Sparse backpropagation algorithms try to reduce the computational load of on-device learning by training only a subset of the weights and biases. Existing approaches use a static number of weights to train. A poor choice of this so-called backpropagation ratio limits either the computational gain or can lead to severe accuracy losses. In this paper we present TinyProp, the first sparse backpropagation method that dynamically adapts the back-propagation ratio during on-device training for each training step. TinyProp induces a small calculation overhead to sort the elements of the gradient, which does not significantly impact the computational gains. TinyProp works particularly well on fine-tuning trained networks on MCUs, which is a typical use case for embedded applications. For typical datasets from three datasets MNIST, DCASE2020 and CIFAR10, we are 5 times faster compared to non-sparse training with an accuracy loss of on average 1%. On average, TinyProp is 2.9 times faster than existing, static sparse backpropagation algorithms and the accuracy loss is reduced on average by 6 % compared to a typical static setting of the back-propagation ratio.

Turbocharger housings in internal combustion engines are subjected to severe mechanical and thermal cyclic loads throughout their life-time or during engine testing. The combination of thermal transients and mechanical load cycling results in a complex evolution of damage, leading to thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) of the material. For the computational TMF life assessment of high temperature components, the DTMF model can provide reliable TMF life predictions. The model is based on a short fatigue crack growth law and uses local finite-element (FE) results to predict the number of cycles to failure for a technical crack. In engine applications, it is nowadays often acceptable to have short cracks as long as they do not propagate and cause loss of function of the component. Thus, it is necessary to predict not only potential crack locations and the corresponding number of cycles for a technical crack, but also to determine subsequent crack growth or even a possible crack arrest. In this work, a method is proposed that allows the simulation of TMF crack growth in high temperature components using FE simulations and non-linear fracture mechanics (NLFM).
A NLFM based crack growth simulation method is described. This method starts with the FE analysis of a component. In this paper, the method is demonstrated for an automotive turbocharger housing subjected to TMF loading. A transient elastic-viscoplastic FE analysis is used to simulate four heating and cooling cycles of an engine test. The stresses, inelastic strains, and temperature histories from the FEA are then used to perform TMF life predictions using the standard DTMF model. The crack position and the crack plane of critical hotspots are then identified. Simulated cracks are inserted at the hotspots. For the model demonstrated, cracks were inserted at two hotspot locations. The ΔJ integral is computed as a fracture mechanics parameter at each point along the crack-front, and the crack extension of each point is then evaluated, allowing the crack to grow iteratively. The paper concludes with a comparison of the crack growth curves for both hotspots with experimental results.
Temperature regulation is an important component for modern high performance single -core and multi-core processors. Especially high operating frequencies and architectures with an increasing number of monolithically integrated transistors result in a high power dissipation and - since processor chips convert the consumed electrical energy into thermal energy - in high operating temperatures. High operating temperatures of processors can have drastic consequences regarding chip reliability, processor performance, and leakage currents. External components like fans or heat spreaders can help to reduce the processor temperature - with the disadvantage of additional costs and reduced reliability. Therefore, software based algorithms for dynamic temperature management are an attractive alternative and well known as Dynamic Thermal Management (DTM). However, the existing approaches for DTM are not taking into account the requirements of real-time embedded computing, which is the objective in the given project. The first steps are the profiling and the thermal modeling of the system, which is reported in this paper for a Freescale i. MX6Q quad-core microprocessor. An analytical model is developed and verified by an extensive set of measurement runs.
In this contribution, we present a novel 3D printed multi-material, electromagnetic vibration harvester. The harvester is based on a cantilever design and utilizes an embedded constantan wire within a matrix of polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG). A prototype has been manufactured with a combination of a fused filament fabrication (FFF) printer and a robot with a custom-made tool.
Currently, immersive technologies are enjoying great popularity. This trend is reflected in technological advances and the emergence of new products for the mass market, such as augmented reality glasses. The range of applications for immersive technologies is growing with more efficient and affordable technologies and student adoption. Especially in education, the use will improve existing learning methods. Immersive application use visual, audio and haptic sensors to fully engage the user in a virtual environment. This impression is reinforced with the help of realistic visualizations and the opportunity for interaction. In particular, Augmented reality is characterized by a high degree of integration between reality and the inserted virtual objects. An augmented interactive simulation for the determination of the specific charge of an electron will be used as an example to demonstrate how such immersion can be created for users. A virtual Helmholtz coil is used to measure and calculate the e/m constant. The voltage at the cathode for generating the electron beam, but also the voltage of the homogeneous magnetic field for deflecting the electron beam, can be variably controlled by haptic user input. Based on these voltages, an immersive virtual electron beam is calculated and visualized. In this paper, the authors present the conceptual steps of this immersive application and address the challenges associated with designing and developing an augmented and interactive simulation.

Sweaty has already participated several times in RoboCup soccer competitions (Adult Size). Now the work is focused coordinating the play of two robots. Moreover, we are working on stabilizing the gait by adding additional sensor information. An ongoing work is the optimization of the control strategy by balancing between impedance and position control. By minimizing the jerk, gait and overall gameplay should improve significantly.
Sweaty has already participated several times in RoboCup soccer competitions (Adult Size). Now the work is focused on stabilizing the gait. Moreover, we would like to overcome the constraints of a ZMP-algorithm that has a horizontal footplate as precondition for the simplification of the equations. In addition we would like to switch between impedance and position control with a fuzzy-like algorithm that might help to minimize jerks when Sweaty’s feet touch the ground.
Sweaty has already participated four times in RoboCup soccer competitions (Adult Size) and came second three times. While 2016 Sweaty needed a lot of luck to be finalist, 2017 Sweaty was a serious adversary in the preliminary rounds. In 2018 Sweaty showed up in the final with some lack of experience and room for improvements, but not without any chance. This paper describes the intended improvements of the humanoid adult size robot Sweaty in order to qualify for the RoboCup 2019 adult size competition.
This paper describes the Sweaty II humanoid adult size robot trying to qualify for the RoboCup 2018 adult size humanoid competition. Sweaty came 2nd in RoboCup 2017 adult size league. The main characteristics of Sweaty are described in the Team Description Paper 2017. The improvements that have been made or are planned to be implemented for RoboCup 2018 are described in this paper.
This paper describes the Sweaty II humanoid adult size robot trying to qualify for the RoboCup 2017 adult size humanoid competition. Sweaty came 2nd in RoboCup 2016 adult size league. The paper describes the main characteristics of Sweaty that made this success possible, and improvements that have been made or are planned to be implemented for RoboCup 2017.
This paper describes the new Sweaty II humanoid adult size robot trying to qualify for the RoboCup 2016 adult size humanoid competition. Based on experiences during RoboCup 2014, the Sweaty robot has been completely redesigned to a new robot Sweaty II. A major change is the use of linear actuators for the legs. Another characteristic is its indirect actuation by means of rods. This allows a variable transmission ratio depending on the angle of a joint.
This paper describes the new Sweaty humanoid adult size robot trying to qualify for the RoboCup 2014 adult size humanoid competition. The robot is built from scratch to eventually allow it to run. One characteristic is that to prevent the motors from overheating, water evaporation is used for cooling. The robot is literally sweating which has given it its name. Another characteristic is, that the motors are not directly connected to the frame but by means of beams. This allows a variable transmission ratio depending on the angle.
The increased complexity and dynamics of the business environment and the problems of a young organization are treated extensively in the literature [Bleicher 2002, p. 34; Malik 1996, p. 86; Ulrich/Probst 1990, p. 23ff; Gomez 1999, p. 65]. This complexity is the core of the leadership role in a company [Malik 1996, p. 184]. STÜTTGEN (1999, p. 8) states in this regard: "A satisfactory answer to the question, according to which patterns complex social systems are to be designed to meet the proliferating environmental complexity facing an adequate intrinsic complexity of the company can be, in this context, a critical success factor for management." How can young SMEs solve strategic problems with service engineering in their companies?
The overview of public key infrastructure based security approaches for vehicular communications
(2015)
Modern transport infrastructure becomes a full member of globally connected network. Leading vehicle manufacturers have already triggered development process, output of which will open a new horizon of possibilities for consumers and developers by providing a new communication entity - a car, thus enabling Car2X communications. Nevertheless some of available systems already provide certain possibilities for vehicles to communicate, most of them are considered not sufficiently secured. During last 15 years a number of big research projects funded by European Union and USA governments were started and concluded after which a set of standards were published prescribing a common architecture for Car2X and vehicles onboard communications. This work concentrates on combining inner and outer vehicular communications together with a use of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
Team description papers of magmaOffenburg are incremental in the sense that each year we address a different topic of our team and the tools around our team. In this year’s team description paper we focus on the architecture of the software. It is a main factor for being able to keep the code maintainable even after 15 years of development. We also describe how we make sure that the code follows this architecture.
In this TDP we describe a new tool created for testing the strategy layer of our soccer playing agents. It is a complete 2D simulator that simulates the games based on the decisions of 22 agents. With this tool, debugging the decision and strategy layer of our agents is much more efficient than before due to various interaction methods and complete control over the simulation.
In the future, the tool could also serve as a measure to run simulations of game series much faster than with the 3D simulator. This way, the impact of different play strategies could be evaluated much faster than before.
After having described many different aspects of our team software in previous years, in this paper we take the freedom to describe the magmaChallenge framework provided by the magmaOffenburg team. The framework is used as a benchmark tool to run different challenges like the running challenge in 2014 or the kick accuracy challenge in 2015. This description should serve as a documentation to simplify the maintenance by the community and to add new benchmarks in the future.
This paper describes the magmaOffenburg 3D simulation team trying to qualify for RoboCup 2013. While last year’s TDP focused on different ways how robot behavior can be defined in the magmaOffenburg framework this year we focus on how we statistically evaluate new features on distributed systems. We also show some results gained through such analysis.
This paper describes the magmaOffenburg 3D simulation team trying to qualify for RoboCup 2012. While last year’s TDP focused on the tool set created for 3D simulation and the support for heterogeneous robot models, this year we focus on the different ways how robot behavior can be defined in the magmaOffenburg framework and how those behaviors can be improved by learning.
This paper describes the magmaOffenburg 3D simulation team trying to qualify for RoboCup 2011. While last year’s TDP focused on the tool set created for 3D simulation in this year we describe the further improvement in this tools as well as some new features we implemented focusing on heterogeneous robot models which seem to be used in RoboCup 2012.
An additional tool was written to simply generate situation-dependent strategies. Furthermore some tools, described last year, are now integrated in one single GUI to easy things up.
This paper describes the magmaOffenburg 3D simulation team trying to qualify for RoboCup 2010. While last year’s TDP focused on decisions making using extended behavior networks and on its software architecture and implementation in this year we describe the tool set that was created for RoboCup 3D. It contians a GUI for agent- and world state visualization, for evaluation of localization algorithms and benchmarks in general, a visual editor for Extended Behavior Networks creation and debugging, a live movement tool to interact with the joints and finally a tool for editing behavior motor files.
This paper describes the magmaOffenburg 3D simulation team trying to qualify for RoboCup 2009. It focuses on two distinctive features of the team: decisions making using extended behavior networks and its software architecture and implementation in Java to open the simulation for the Java community.
The Internet of Things (IoT), ubiquitous computing and ubiquitous connectivity, Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), ambient intelligence, Machine-to-Machine communication (M2M) or Car-to-Car (C2C)-communication, smart metering, smart grid, telematics, telecare, telehealth – there are many buzzwords around current developments related to the Internet.
This contribution gives an overview on such IoT-applications, as they are already used today to improve the availability of information, increase efficiency, push system limits and extend the value chain. At a closer look, the economic and technical development can be separated into different phases. It is interesting that we are currently at the threshold to a new phase, with decentralized and cooperative communication and control nodes as cornerstones. Thus, embedded systems and their connectivity are in the middle of the scene.
This recent development is described along with some example projects from the author’s team which are used in industrial automation, energy supply and distribution (home automation and smart metering), traffic engineering (cooperative driver assistance systems), and in telehealth and telecare.
The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015) was celebrated around the world. Worldwide activities were organized to highlight the impact of optics and photonics on life, science, economics, arts and culture, and also in education. With most of our activities at Offenburg University of Applied Sciences (Offenburg/Germany), we reached our own students and the general population of our region: - University for Children: “The Magic of Light“ winter lecture program and “Across the Universe with Relativity and Quantum Theory” summer lecture program - “Students Meet Scientists” - “A Century of General Relativity Theory” lecture program Nevertheless, with some of our activities we also engaged a worldwide audience: - IYL 2015 art poster collection (Magic of Light and No Football, Just Photonics) - Smart Interactive Projection - Twitter Wall - “Invisible Light” - Live broadcasting of the total lunar eclipse - Film Festival Merida Mexico The authors will highlight recent activities at our university dedicated to promote, celebrate, and create a legacy for the IYL 2015.
The services sector is also called “tertiary sector” and has become increasingly important in the last few decades. The process of this occurring structural change is characterized by a significant increase in employment in the services sector. On the other hand, the former economic importance in traditional areas, such as agriculture and forestry, as well as manufacturing, is declining.
To have an overview it is important to look and to analyse the different research studies.
The paper will focus on the activities of the International Year of Light and Optical Technologies 2015 (IYL) with their impact in life, science, art, culture, education and outreach as well as the importance in promoting the objectives for sustainable development. It describes our activities carried out in the run-up to or during the IYL, as well as reports on the generic projects that led to the success of the IYL. The success of the IYL is illustrated by examples and statistics. Relating to the potential and success of the IYL, the impact and the genesis of the International Day of Light (IDL) is presented. Impressions from the opening ceremony of the IYL in Paris at UNESCO headquarters and the Inaugural Ceremony of the IDL will then be covered. A second focus is placed on the interdisciplinary media projects realized by the students of our university dedicated to these events. Finally, an analysis of the impact and legacy of IYL and IDL will be presented.
Ranging errors are inevitable in all local positioning systems, including those based on Time-of-Flight (ToF) technique. Results of experiments show that the major cause for these errors is a signal degradation from multipath propagation. This effect is especially critical in case of Non-Light-of-Sight (NLOS) conditions. This paper describes causes that affects ranging errors for nanoLOC™-TOF-technology and presents estimations for the probability density functions of such errors under different NLOS conditions. The provided estimations allow the improvement of the accuracy of the localization through the subsequent mitigation of the ranging errors from the measurements. Additionally, it is proposed to increase the number of cases of NLOS-conditions for the improvement of the accuracy.
The Effect of Gamification on Emotions - The Potential of Facial Recognition in Work Environmentsns
(2015)
Gamification means using video game elements to improve user experience and user engagement in non-game services and applications. This article describes the effects when gamification is used in work contexts. Here we focus on industrial production. We describe how facial recognition can be employed to measure and quantify the effect of gamification on the users’ emotions.
The quantitative results show that gamification significantly reduces both task completion time and error rate. However, the results concerning the effect on emotions are surprising. Without gamification there are not only more unhappy expressions (as to expect) but surprisingly also more happy expressions. Both findings are statistically highly significant.
We think that in redundant production work there are generally more (negative) emotions involved. When there is no gamification happy and unhappy balance each other. In contrast gamification seems to shift the spectrum of moods towards “relaxed”. Especially for work environments such a calm attitude is a desirable effect on the users. Thus our findings support the use of gamification.
The majority of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in team sports are non-contact injuries, with cutting maneuvers identified as high-risk tasks. Young female handball players have been shown to be at greater risk for ACL injuries than males. One risk factor for ACL injuries is the magnitude of the knee abduction moment (KAM). Cutting technique variables on foot placement, overall approach and knee kinematics have been shown to influence the KAM. Since injury risk is believed to increase with increasing task complexity, the purpose of the study was to test the effect of task complexity on technique variables that influence the KAM in female handball players during fake-and-cut tasks.
Security in IT systems, particularly in embedded devices like Cyber Physical Systems (CPSs), has become an important matter of concern as it is the prerequisite for ensuring privacy and safety. Among a multitude of existing security measures, the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol family offers mature and standardized means for establishing secure communication channels over insecure transport media. In the context of classical IT infrastructure, its security with regard to protocol and implementation attacks has been subject to extensive research. As TLS protocols find their way into embedded environments, we consider the security and robustness of implementations of these protocols specifically in the light of the peculiarities of embedded systems. We present an approach for systematically checking the security and robustness of such implementations using fuzzing techniques and differential testing. In spite of its origin in testing TLS implementations we expect our approach to likewise be applicable to implementations of other cryptographic protocols with moderate efforts.
One of the main requirements of spatially distributed Internet of Things (IoT) solutions is to have networks with wider coverage to connect many low-power devices. Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWAN) and Cellular IoT(cIOT) networks are promising candidates in this space. LPWAN approaches are based on enhanced physical layer (PHY) implementations to achieve long range such as LoRaWAN, SigFox, MIOTY. Narrowband versions of cellular network offer reduced bandwidth and, simplified node and network management mechanisms, such as Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) and Long-Term Evolution for Machines (LTE-M). Since the underlying use cases come with various requirements it is essential to perform a comparative analysis of competing technologies. This article provides systematic performance measurement and comparison of LPWAN and NB-IoT technologies in a unified testbed, also discusses the necessity of future fifth generation (5G) LPWAN solutions.
An investigation is underway regarding the usefulness of altazimuth-mounting telescopes' incorporation of laser gyros for pointing and fiber gyros with extremely small random-walk coefficient for telescope inertial stabilization during tracking. A star tracker is expected to help stabilize long-term gyro bias. Gyro and telescope specifications have been derived by means of computer simulations and systems analyses.
Visual programming languages (VPL) let users develop software programs by combining visual program elements, like lists of objects, loops or conditional statements rather than by specifying them textually.
Humanoid robots programming is a very attractive and motivating application domain for students, especially for programming beginners. Humanoid robots are constructed in such a way that they mimic the human body by using actuators that perform like muscles. Typically, a humanoid robot consists of sensors and actuators, i.e. torso, a head, two arms, and two legs, though some humanoid robots may replicate only part of the body, for example, from the waist up. In some cases, humanoid robots are equipped with heads designed to replicate additional human facial features such as eyes. Additional sensors are needed by a robot to gather information about the conditions of the environment to allow the robot to make necessary decisions about its position or certain actions that the situation requires, e.g. an arm movement or an open/close hand action. Other examples for sensor are reflective infrared sensors used to detect objects in proximity.
In this work, we introduce a use-case centered approach based on sensors and actors of a robot and a workflow model to visually describe the sequence of actions including conditional actions or concurrent actions. We provide an in-depth discussion of a new VPL based teaching method for programming humanoid robots based on VPLs. Open research challenges, limits and perspectives for further development of our teaching approach are discussed as well.
Machine learning (ML) has become highly relevant in applications across all industries, and specialists in the field are sought urgently. As it is a highly interdisciplinary field, requiring knowledge in computer science, statistics and the relevant application domain, experts are hard to find. Large corporations can sweep the job market by offering high salaries, which makes the situation for small and medium enterprises (SME) even worse, as they usually lack the capacities both for attracting specialists and for qualifying their own personnel. In order to meet the enormous demand in ML specialists, universities now teach ML in specifically designed degree programs as well as within established programs in science and engineering. While the teaching almost always uses practical examples, these are somewhat artificial or outdated, as real data from real companies is usually not available. The approach reported in this contribution aims to tackle the above challenges in an integrated course, combining three independent aspects: first, teaching key ML concepts to graduate students from a variety of existing degree programs; second, qualifying working professionals from SME for ML; and third, applying ML to real-world problems faced by those SME. The course was carried out in two trial periods within a government-funded project at a university of applied sciences in south-west Germany. The region is dominated by SME many of which are world leaders in their industries. Participants were students from different graduate programs as well as working professionals from several SME based in the region. The first phase of the course (one semester) consists of the fundamental concepts of ML, such as exploratory data analysis, regression, classification, clustering, and deep learning. In this phase, student participants and working professionals were taught in separate tracks. Students attended regular classes and lab sessions (but were also given access to e-learning materials), whereas the professionals learned exclusively in a flipped classroom scenario: they were given access to e-learning units (video lectures and accompanying quizzes) for preparation, while face-to-face sessions were dominated by lab experiments applying the concepts. Prior to the start of the second phase, participating companies were invited to submit real-world problems that they wanted to solve with the help of ML. The second phase consisted of practical ML projects, each tackling one of the problems and worked on by a mixed team of both students and professionals for the period of one semester. The teams were self-organized in the ways they preferred to work (e.g. remote vs. face-to-face collaboration), but also coached by one of the teaching staff. In several plenary meetings, the teams reported on their status as well as challenges and solutions. In both periods, the course was monitored and extensive surveys were carried out. We report on the findings as well as the lessons learned. For instance, while the program was very well-received, professional participants wished for more detailed coverage of theoretical concepts. A challenge faced by several teams during the second phase was a dropout of student members due to upcoming exams in other subjects.
Both German and French Air-Source Heat Pump (ASHP) markets have been enjoying an overall upwards trend for many years but, nevertheless, they remain merely slightly penetrated. In terms of market players and their share, the French market is aptly diversified, whereas the German one, being utterly dominated by one single manufacturer, is badly in need of some diversification. At the same time Korean ASHP manufacturers are targeting the French but not German ASHP market. The main purpose of the paper is to find out likely reasons for their one-sided engagement, primarily those associated with the ASHP technology and its system-related aspects.

Tactile Navigation with Checkpoints as Progress Indicators?: Only when Walking Longer Straight Paths
(2020)
Persons with both vision and hearing impairments have to rely primarily on tactile feedback, which is frequently used in assistive devices. We explore the use of checkpoints as a way to give them feedback during navigation tasks. Particularly, we investigate how checkpoints can impact performance and user experience. We hypothesized that individuals receiving checkpoint feedback would take less time and perceive the navigation experience as superior to those who did not receive such feedback. Our contribution is two-fold: a detailed report on the implementation of a smart wearable with tactile feedback (1), and a user study analyzing its effects (2). The results show that in contrast to our assumptions, individuals took considerably more time to complete routes with checkpoints. Also, they perceived navigating with checkpoints as inferior to navigating without checkpoints. While the quantitative data leave little room for doubt, the qualitative data open new aspects: when walking straight and not being "overwhelmed" by various forms of feedback in succession, several participants actually appreciated the checkpoint feedback.
Deafblindness, also known as dual sensory loss, is the combination of sight and hearing impairments of such extent that it becomes difficult for one sense to compensate for the other. Communication issues are a key concern for the Deafblind community. We present the design and technical implementation of the Tactile Board: a mobile Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device for individuals with deafblindness. The Tactile Board allows text and speech to be translated into vibrotactile signs that are displayed real-time to the user via a haptic wearable. Our aim is to facilitate communication for the deafblind community, creating opportunities for these individuals to initiate and engage in social interactions with other people without the direct need of an intervener.
Harnessing the overall benefits of the latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) requires the extensive collaboration of academia and industry. These collaborations promote innovation and growth while enforcing the practical usefulness of newer technologies in real life. The purpose of this article is to outline the challenges faced during cross-collaboration between academia and industry. These challenges are also inspected with the help of an ongoing project titled “Quality Assurance of Machine Learning Applications” (Q-AMeLiA), in which three universities cooperate with five industry partners to make the product risk of AI-based products visible. Further, we discuss the hurdles and the key challenges in machine learning (ML) technology transformation from academia to industry based on robustness, simplicity, and safety. These challenges are an outcome of the lack of common standards, metrics, and missing regulatory considerations when state-of-the-art (SOTA) technology is developed in academia. The use of biased datasets involves ethical concerns that might lead to unfair outcomes when the ML model is deployed in production. The advancement of AI in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) requires more in terms of common tandardization of concepts rather than algorithm breakthroughs. In this paper, in addition to the general challenges, we also discuss domain specific barriers for five different domains i.e., object detection, hardware benchmarking, continual learning, action recognition, and industrial process automation, and highlight the steps necessary for successfully managing the cross-sectoral collaborations between academia and industry.
(2021)
Additive tooling is a quick and cost-effective way of producing injection molded products and high fidelity prototypes using the injection molding process. As part of product development, additive tooling is integrated into a complex process. A lack of design and application knowledge represents a barrier in its use. The present work shows how a Design-Structure-Matrix (DSM) can be used to systematically record and analyze influencing factors and their interrelationships. A systematic literature search is carried out to identify the factors and relationships.
Spatially Distributed Wireless Networks (SDWN) are one of the basic technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT) and (Industrial) Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. These SDWN for many of these applications has strict requirements such as low cost, simple installation and operations, and high potential flexibility and mobility. Among the different Narrowband Wireless Wide Area Networking (NBWWAN) technologies, which are introduced to address these categories of wireless networking requirements, Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is getting more traction due to attractive system parameters, energy-saving mode of operation with low data rates and bandwidth, and its applicability in 5G use cases. Since several technologies are available and because the underlying use cases come with various requirements, it is essential to perform a systematic comparative analysis of competing technologies to choose the right technology. It is also important to perform testing during different phases of the system development life cycle. This paper describes the systematic test environment for automated testing of radio communication and systematic measurements of the performance of NB-IoT.

A novel approach for synchronization and calibration of a camera and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) in the research-oriented visual-inertial mapping-and localization-framework maplab is presented. Mapping and localization are based on detecting different features in the environment. In addition to the possibility of creating single-case maps, the included algorithms allow merging maps to increase mapping accuracy and obtain large-scale maps. Furthermore, the algorithms can be used to optimize the collected data. The preliminary results show that after appropriate calibration and synchronization maplab can be used efficiently for mapping, especially in rooms and small building environments.
This paper presents the elements and the results from the European research project inCASA (Integrated Network for Completely Assisted Senior Citizen’s Autonomy), which designed and implemented a seamless integration of heterogeneous systems and network protocols for regionally distributed telecare and telehealth applications. The integration includes a multitude of physical interface, the transcoding of data models using embedded middleware, and a backend system with open interfaces. The implementation was verified in field tests in five European countries.
Network landscape of recent time contains many different network technologies, a wide range of end-devices with a large scale of capabilities and power, and an immense quantity of information and data represented in different formats. Research on 3D imaging, virtual reality and holographic techniques will result in new user interfaces (UI) for mobile devices, will increase their diversity and variety. In this paper software architecture has been proposed to establish device and content format independent communication including 3D imaging and virtual reality data as content. As experimental validation the concept is implemented in collaborative Language Learning Game (LLG), which is a learning tool for language acquisition.
Diffracted waves carry high resolution information that can help interpreting fine structural details at a scale smaller than the seismic wavelength. Because of the low signal-to-noise ratio of diffracted waves, it is challenging to preserve them during processing and to identify them in the final data. It is, therefore, a traditional approach to pick manually the diffractions. However, such task is tedious and often prohibitive, thus, current attention is given to domain adaptation. Those methods aim to transfer knowledge from a labeled domain to train the model, and then infer on the real unlabeled data. In this regard, it is common practice to create a synthetic labeled training dataset, followed by testing on unlabeled real data. Unfortunately, such procedure may fail due to the existing gap between the synthetic and the real distribution since quite often synthetic data oversimplifies the problem, and consequently the transfer learning becomes a hard and non-trivial procedure. Furthermore, deep neural networks are characterized by their high sensitivity towards cross-domain distribution shift. In this work, we present deep learning model that builds a bridge between both distributions creating a semi-synthetic datatset that fills in the gap between synthetic and real domains. More specifically, our proposal is a feed-forward, fully convolutional neural network for imageto-image translation that allows to insert synthetic diffractions while preserving the original reflection signal. A series of experiments validate that our approach produces convincing seismic data containing the desired synthetic diffractions.
Growing demands for cleaner production and higher eco-efficiency in process engineering require a comprehensive analysis of technical and environmental outcomes of customers and society. Moreover, unexpected additional technical or ecological drawbacks may appear as negative side effects of new environ-mentally friendly technologies. The paper conceptualizes a comprehensive ap-proach for analysis and ranking of engineering and ecological requirements in process engineering in order to anticipate secondary problems in eco-design and to avoid compromising the environmental or technological goals. For this purpose, the paper presents a method based on integration of the Quality Func-tion Deployment approach with the Importance-Satisfaction Analysis for the requirements ranking. The proposed method identifies and classifies compre-hensively the potential engineering and eco-engineering contradictions through analysis of correlations within requirements groups such as stakehold-er requirements (SRs) and technical requirements (TRs), and additionally through cross-relationship between SRs and TRs.
Accelerated transformation of the society and industry through digi-talization, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies has intensified the need for university graduates that are capable of rapidly finding breakthrough solutions to complex problems, and can successfully implement innovation con-cepts. However, there are only few universities making significant efforts to com-prehensively incorporate creative and systematic tools of TRIZ (theory of in-ventive problem solving) and KBI (knowledge-based innovation) into their de-gree structure. Engineering curricula offer little room for enhancing creativity and inventiveness by means of discipline‐specific subjects. Moreover, many ed-ucators mistakenly believe that students are either inherently creative, or will in-evitably obtain adequate problem-solving skills as a result of their university study. This paper discusses challenges of intelligent integration of TRIZ and KBI into university curricula. It advocates the need for development of standard guidelines and best-practice recommendations in order to facilitate sustainable education of ambitious, talented, and inventive specialists. Reflections of educa-tors that teach TRIZ and KBI to students from mechanical, electrical, process engineering, and business administration are presented.
Technology and computer applications influence our daily lives and questions arise concerning the role of artificial intelligence and decision-making algorithms. There are warning voices, that computers can, in theory, emulate human intelligence-and exceed it. This paper points out that a replacement of humans by computers is unlikely, because human thinking is characterized by cognitive heuristics and emotions, which cannot simply be implemented in machines operating with algorithms, procedural data processing or artificial neural networks. However, we are going to share our responsibilities with superior computer systems, which are tracking and surveying all of our digital activities, whereas we have no idea of the decision-making processes inside the machines. It is shown that we need a new digital humanism defining rules of computer responsibilities to avoid digital totalism and comprehensive monitoring and controlling of individuals within the planet Earth.
A 2002 study on corporate planning of the top German companies measured by turnover found that of the surveyed large companies, 80 percent have carried out strategic planning and 90 percent have operational planning in place [Link/Orbán 2002, pp. 11]. The human and material costs of designing and implementing the strategic planning can be very high. Many SMEs do not have the necessary capacities to do this. To obtain a comprehensive overview, this chapter examines the existing studies and findings for young SMEs. Many of the studies reviewed and the following publications relate to SMEs as defined by the EU. This analysis also includes established SMEs and medium-sized enterprises.
The development of new processes and materials for additive manufacturing is currently progressing rapidly. In order to use the advantages of additive manufacturing, however, product development and design must also be adapted to these new processes. Therefore it is suitable to use structural optimization. To achieve the best results in lightweight design, it is important to have an approach that reduces the volume in the unloaded regions and considers the restrictions and characteristics of the additive manufacturing process. In this contribution, a case study using a humanoid robot is presented. Thus, the pelvis module of a humanoid robot is optimized regarding its weight and stiffness. Furthermore, an integrated design is implemented in order to reduce the number of parts and the screw connections. The manufacturing uses a new aluminum-based material that has been specially developed for use in additive manufacturing and lightweight construction. For the additive manufacturing by means of the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process, different restrictions and the assembly concepts of the humanoid robot have to be taken into account. These restrictions have to be considered in the setting of the individual parameters and target functions of the structural optimization. As a result, a framework is presented that shows the steps of the redesign and the optimization of the pelvis module. In order to achieve high accuracy with the product, the redesign of the pelvis module is demonstrated with regard to mechanical and thermal postprocessing. Finally, the redesigned part and the different assembly concepts are compared to analyze the economic and technical effects of the optimization.
Strings P
(2021)
Strings is an audiovisual performance for an acoustic violin and two generative instruments, one for creating synthetic sounds and one for creating synthetic imagery. The three instruments are related to each other conceptually , technically, and aesthetically by sharing the same physical principle, that of a vibrating string. This submission continues the work the authors have previously published at xCoAx 2020. The current submission briefly summarizes the previous publication and then describes the changes that have been made to Strings. The P in the title emphasizes, that most of these changes have been informed by experiences collected during rehearsals (in German Proben). These changes have helped Strings to progress from a predominantly technical framework to a work that is ready for performance.
Strings
(2020)
This article presents the currently ongoing development of an audiovisual performance work with the title Strings. This work provides an improvisation setting for a violinist, two laptop performers, and two generative systems. At the core of Strings lies an approach that establishes a strong correlation among all participants by means of a shared physical principle. The physical principle is that of a vibrating string. The article discusses how this principle is used in both natural and simulated forms as main interaction layer between all performers and as natural or generative principle for creating audio and video.
During the periods of social isolation to contain the advance of COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, educational institutions have had the challenge to adopt technological strategies not only to ensure continuity in students’ classes, but also to support their mental health in a period of uncertainty and health risks. Loneliness is an emotional distress caused by the lack of meaningful social connections; it has increasingly affected young adults worldwide during the pandemic's social isolation and still bears psychological effects in the current post-pandemic period. In the light of this challenge, the Nonenliness App was developed as a way to bring together university communities to address issues related to loneliness and mental health disorders through a gamified and social online environment. In this paper, we present the app and its main functionalities (Beta version) and discuss the preliminary results of a pilot clinical study conducted with university students in Germany (N = 12) to verify the app's efficacy and usability, alongside the challenges faced and the next steps to be taken regarding the platform's improvement.
The central purpose of this paper is to present a novel framework supporting the specification and the implementation of media streaming services using XML and Java Media Framework (JMF). It provides an integrated service development environment comprising of a streaming service model, a service specification language and several implementation and retrieval tools. Our approach is based on a clear separation of a streaming service specification, and its implementation by a distributed JMF application and can be used for different streaming paradigms, e.g. push and pull services.
Gamifying rehabilitation is an efficient way to improve motivation and exercise frequency. However, between flow theory, self-determination theory or Bartle's player types there is much room for speculation regarding the mechanics required for successful gamification, which in turn leads to increased motivation. For our study, we selected a gamified solution for motion training (an exergame) where the playful design elements are extremely simple. The contribution is three-fold: we show best practices from the state of the art, present a study analyzing the effects of simple gamification mechanics on a quantitative and on a qualitative level and discuss strategies for playful design in therapeutic movement games.
The process of establishing an industry standard for TRIZ has been initiated: VDI Guideline 4521 will cover TRIZ. Work is going on on the first part of the standard which will define and explain basic TRIZ vocabulary and notions. A first draft of a list of terms has been compiled by V. Souchkov and is currently being discussed at MATRIZ. The standardization committee consists of TRIZ specialists of various degrees together with TRIZ users from industry. It is working in close connection with MATRIZ. In parallel, translations for the elements of TRIZ terminology into several languages are being sought. According to schedule, work on the first part of the standard may be finished by July 2014 and may go into print by the end of the year.
In this preliminary report, we present a simple but very effective technique to stabilize the training of CNN based GANs. Motivated by recently published methods using frequency decomposition of convolutions (eg Octave Convolutions), we propose a novel convolution scheme to stabilize the training and reduce the likelihood of a mode collapse. The basic idea of our approach is to split convolutional filters into additive high and low frequency parts, while shifting weight updates from low to high during the training. Intuitively, this method forces GANs to learn low frequency coarse image structures before descending into fine (high frequency) details. Our approach is orthogonal and complementary to existing stabilization methods and can simply plugged into any CNN based GAN architecture. First experiments on the CelebA dataset show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of running speed and slope on metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint kinematics. 22 male and female runners underwent 3D motion analysis on an instrumented treadmill at three different speeds (2.5 m/s, 3.0 m/s, 3.5 m/s). At each speed, participants ran at seven slope conditions (downhill: -15%, -10%, -5%, level, and uphill: +5%, +10%, +15%). We found a significant main effect (p < 0.001) of running speed and slope on peak MTP dorsiflexion and a running speed by slope interaction effect (p < 0.001) for peak MTP dorsiflexion velocity. These findings highlight the need to consider running intensity and environmental factors like running surface inclination when considering MTP joint mechanics and technological aids to support runners.
Despite the success of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in many computer vision and image analysis tasks, they remain vulnerable against so-called adversarial attacks: Small, crafted perturbations in the input images can lead to false predictions. A possible defense is to detect adversarial examples. In this work, we show how analysis in the Fourier domain of input images and feature maps can be used to distinguish benign test samples from adversarial images. We propose two novel detection methods: Our first method employs the magnitude spectrum of the input images to detect an adversarial attack. This simple and robust classifier can successfully detect adversarial perturbations of three commonly used attack methods. The second method builds upon the first and additionally extracts the phase of Fourier coefficients of feature-maps at different layers of the network. With this extension, we are able to improve adversarial detection rates compared to state-of-the-art detectors on five different attack methods. The code for the methods proposed in the paper is available at github.com/paulaharder/SpectralAdversarialDefense
The combination of fossil-derived fuels with ethanol and methanol has acquired relevance and attention in several countries in recent years. This trend is strongly affected by market prices, constant geopolitical events, new sustainability policies, new laws and regulations, etc. Besides bio-fuels these materials also include different additives as anti-shock agents and as octane enhancer. Some of the chemical compounds in these additives may have harmful properties for both environment and public health (besides the inherent properties, like volatility). We present detailed Raman spectral information from toluene (C7H8) and ethanol (C2H6O) contained in samples of ElO gasoline-ethanol blends. The spectral information has been extracted by using a robust, high resolution Fourier-Transform Raman spectrometer (FT-Raman) prototype. This spectral information has been also compared with Raman spectra from pure additives and with standard Raman lines in order to validate its accuracy in frequency. The spectral information is presented in the range of 0 cm-1 to 3500 cm-1 with a resolution of 1.66cm-1. This allows resolving tight adjacent Raman lines like the ones observed around 1003cm-1 and 1030cm-1 (characteristic lines of toluene). The Raman spectra obtained show a reduced frequency deviation when compared to standard Raman spectra from different calibration materials. The FT-Raman spectrometer prototype used for the analysis consist basically of a Michelson interferometer and a self-designed photon counter cooled down on a Peltier element arrangement. The light coupling is achieved with conventional62.5/125μm multi-mode fibers. This FT-Raman setup is able to extract high resolution and frequency precise Raman spectra from the additives in the fuels analyzed. The proposed prototype has no additional complex hardware components or costly software modules. The mechanical and thermal disturbances affecting the FT-Raman system are mathematically compensated by accurately extracting the optical path information of the Michelson interferometer. This is accomplished by generating an additional interference pattern with a λ = 632.8 nm Helium-Neon laser (HeNe laser). It enables the FT-Raman system to perform reliable and clean spectral measurements from the materials under observation.
