Background: This paper presents a conceptual design for an anthropomorphic replacement hand made of silicone that integrates a sensory feedback system. In combination with a motorized orthosis, it allows performing movements and registering information on the flexion and the pressure of the fingers.
Methods: To create the replacement hand, a three-dimensional (3D) scanner was used to scan the hand of the test person. With computer-aided design (CAD), a mold was created from the hand, then 3D-printed. Bending and force sensors were attached to the mold before silicone casting to implement the sensory feedback system. To achieve a functional and anthropomorphic appearance of the replacement hand, a material analysis was carried out. In two different test series, the properties of the used silicones were analyzed regarding their mechanical properties and the manufacturing process.
Results: Individual fingers and an entire hand with integrated sensors were realized, which demonstrated in several tests that sensory feedback in such an anthropomorphic replacement hand can be realized. Nevertheless, the choice of silicone material remains an open challenge, as there is a trade-off between the hardness of the material and the maximum mechanical force of the orthosis.
Conclusion: Apart from manufacturing-related issues, it is possible to cost-effectively create a personalized, anthropomorphic replacement hand, including sensory feedback, by using 3D scanning and 3D printing techniques.
In the field of neuroprosthetics, the current state-of-the-art method involves controlling the prosthesis with electromyography (EMG) or electrooculography/electroencephalography (EOG/EEG). However, these systems are both expensive and time consuming to calibrate, susceptible to interference, and require a lengthy learning phase by the patient. Therefore, it is an open challenge to design more robust systems that are suitable for everyday use and meet the needs of patients. In this paper, we present a new concept of complete visual control for a prosthesis, an exoskeleton or another end effector using augmented reality (AR) glasses presented for the first time in a proof-of-concept study. By using AR glasses equipped with a monocular camera, a marker attached to the prosthesis is tracked. Minimal relative movements of the head with respect to the prosthesis are registered by tracking and used for control. Two possible control mechanisms including visual feedback are presented and implemented for both a motorized hand orthosis and a motorized hand prosthesis. Since the grasping process is mainly controlled by vision, the proposed approach appears to be natural and intuitive.
Restoring hand motion to people experiencing amputation, paralysis, and stroke is a critical area of research and development. While electrode-based systems that use input from the brain or muscle have proven successful, these systems tend to be expensive and di¨cult to learn. One group of researchers is exploring the use of augmented reality (AR) as a new way of controlling hand prostheses. A camera mounted on eyeglasses tracks LEDs on a prosthetic to execute opening and closing commands using one of two different AR systems. One system uses a rectangular command window to control motion: crossing horizontally signals “open” along one direction and “close” in the opposite direction. The second system uses a circular command window: once control is enabled, gripping strength can be controlled by the direction of head motion. While the visual system remains to be tested with patients, its low cost, ease of use, and lack of electrodes make the device a promising solution for restoring hand motion.
A new concept for robust non-invasive optical activation of motorized hand prostheses by simple and non-contactcommands is presented. In addition, a novel approach for aiding hand amputees is shown, outlining significantprogress in thinking worth testing. In this, personalized 3D-printed artificial flexible hands are combined withcommercially available motorized exoskeletons, as they are used e.g. in tetraplegics.
Neuroprosthetics 2.0
(2019)
The present work ties in with the problem of bicycle road assessment that is currently done using expensive special measuring vehicles. Our alternative approach for road condition assessment is to mount a sensor device on a bicycle which sends accelerometer and gyroscope data via WiFi to a classification server. There, a prediction model determines road type and condition based on the sensor data. For the classification task, we compare different machine learning methods with each other, whereby validation accuracies of 99% can be achieved with deep residual networks such as InceptionTime. The main contribution of this work with respect to comparable work is that we achieve excellent accuracies on a realistic dataset classifying road conditions into nine distinct classes that are highly relevant for practice.

This study focuses on the autonomous navigation and mapping of indoor environments using a drone equipped only with a monocular camera and height measurement sensors. A visual SLAM algorithm was employed to generate a preliminary map of the environment and to determine the drone's position within the map. A deep neural network was utilized to generate a depth image from the monocular camera's input, which was subsequently transformed into a point cloud to be projected into the map. By aligning the depth point cloud with the map, 3D occupancy grid maps were constructed by using ray tracing techniques to get a precise depiction of obstacles and the surroundings. Due to the absence of IMU data from the low-cost drone for the SLAM algorithm, the created maps are inherently unscaled. However, preliminary tests with relative navigation in unscaled maps have revealed potential accuracy issues, which can only be overcome by incorporating additional information from the given sensors for scale estimation.
Modern industrial production is heavily dependent on efficient workflow processes and automation. The steady flow of raw materials as well as the separation of vital parts and semi-finished products are at the core of these automated procedures. Commonly used systems for this work are bowl feeders, which separate the parts and material by a combination of mechanical vibration and friction. The production of these tools, especially the design of the ramping spiral, is delicate and time-consuming work, as the shape, slope, and material must be carefully adjusted for the corresponding parts. In this work, we propose an automated approach, making use of optimization procedures from artificial intelligence, to design the spiral ramps of the bowl feeders. Therefore, the whole system and considered parts are physically simulated and the optimized geometry is subsequently exported into a CAD system for the actual building, respectively printing. The employment of evolutionary optimization gives the need to develop a mathematical model for the whole setup and find an efficient representation of integral features.
The precise positioning of mobile systems is a prerequisite for any autonomous behavior, in an industrial environment as well as for field robotics. The paper describes the set up for an experimental platform and its use for the evaluation of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms. Two approaches are compared. First, a local method based on point cloud matching and integration of inertial measurement units is evaluated. Subsequent matching makes it possible to create a three-dimensional point cloud that can be used as a map in subsequent runs. The second approach is a full SLAM algorithm, based on graph relaxation models, incorporating the full sensor suite of odometry, inertial sensors, and 3D laser scan data.
Evaluation of Deep Learning-Based Neural Network Methods for Cloud Detection and Segmentation
(2021)
This paper presents a systematic approach for accurate short-time cloud coverage prediction based on a machine learning (ML) approach. Based on a newly built omnidirectional ground-based sky camera system, local training and evaluation data sets were created. These were used to train several state-of-the-art deep neural networks for object detection and segmentation. For this purpose, the camera-generated a full hemispherical image every 30 min over two months in daylight conditions with a fish-eye lens. From this data set, a subset of images was selected for training and evaluation according to various criteria. Deep neural networks, based on the two-stage R-CNN architecture, were trained and compared with a U-net segmentation approach implemented by CloudSegNet. All chosen deep networks were then evaluated and compared according to the local situation.
Positioning mobile systems with high accuracy is a prerequisite for intelligent autonomous behavior, both in industrial environments and in field robotics. This paper describes the setup of a robotic platform and its use for the evaluation of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms. A configuration using a mobile robot Husky A200, and a LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensor was used to implement the setup. For verification of the proposed setup, different scan matching methods for odometry determination in indoor and outdoor environments are tested. An assessment of the accuracy of the baseline 3D-SLAM system and the selected evaluation system is presented by comparing different scenarios and test situations. It was shown that the hdl_graph_slam in combination with the LiDAR OS1 and the scan matching algorithms FAST_GICP and FAST_VGICP achieves good mapping results with accuracies up to 2 cm.
Design and Implementation of a Camera-Based Tracking System for MAV Using Deep Learning Algorithms
(2023)
In recent years, the advancement of micro-aerial vehicles has been rapid, leading to their widespread utilization across various domains due to their adaptability and efficiency. This research paper focuses on the development of a camera-based tracking system specifically designed for low-cost drones. The primary objective of this study is to build up a system capable of detecting objects and locating them on a map in real time. Detection and positioning are achieved solely through the utilization of the drone’s camera and sensors. To accomplish this goal, several deep learning algorithms are assessed and adopted because of their suitability with the system. Object detection is based upon a single-shot detector architecture chosen for maximum computation speed, and the tracking is based upon the combination of deep neural-network-based features combined with an efficient sorting strategy. Subsequently, the developed system is evaluated using diverse metrics to determine its performance for detection and tracking. To further validate the approach, the system is employed in the real world to show its possible deployment. For this, two distinct scenarios were chosen to adjust the algorithms and system setup: a search and rescue scenario with user interaction and precise geolocalization of missing objects, and a livestock control scenario, showing the capability of surveying individual members and keeping track of number and area. The results demonstrate that the system is capable of operating in real time, and the evaluation verifies that the implemented system enables precise and reliable determination of detected object positions. The ablation studies prove that object identification through small variations in phenotypes is feasible with our approach.
A novel approach for synchronization and calibration of a camera and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) in the research-oriented visual-inertial mapping-and localization-framework maplab is presented. Mapping and localization are based on detecting different features in the environment. In addition to the possibility of creating single-case maps, the included algorithms allow merging maps to increase mapping accuracy and obtain large-scale maps. Furthermore, the algorithms can be used to optimize the collected data. The preliminary results show that after appropriate calibration and synchronization maplab can be used efficiently for mapping, especially in rooms and small building environments.
The visual-inertial mapping and localization system maplab is analyzed by its implementation and subsequent evaluation. The mapping or localization is based on environmental feature detection. In addition to creating maps, there is also the option of fusion of several maps and thus mapping extensive areas and using them for further analysis of data. In this way, various software tools can be used to optimize the existing data sets.
Two sensor components are needed: an inertial measuring unit (IMU) and a monochrome camera, which are combined by a hardware rig and put into operation for the analysis of the visual-inertial system. System calibration is crucial for precision and system functioning and is based on nonlinear dynamic state estimation. This ensures the best possible estimate of the position of the environmental feature and the map. Maplab is particularly suitable for mapping rooms or small building complexes as the implementation and evaluation of the results in different application scenarios show. Special emphasis is laid on the evaluation of larger scenarios, in which is shown, that the system is struggling to keep up geometric consistencies and thus provide an accurate map.
Object Detection and Mapping with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Using Convolutional Neural Networks
(2021)
Significant progress has been made in the field of deep learning through intensive research over the last decade. So-called convolutional neural networks are an essential component of this research. In this type of neural network, the mathematical convolution operator is used to extract characteristics or anomalies. The purpose of this work is to investigate the extent to which it is possible in certain initial settings to input aerial recordings and flight data of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the architecture of a neural network and to detect and map an object. Using the calculated contours or dimensions of the so-called bounding boxes, the position of the objects can be determined relative to the current UAV location.
The paper describes a systematic approach for a precise short-time cloud coverage prediction based on an optical system. We present a distinct pre-processing stage that uses a model based clear sky simulation to enhance the cloud segmentation in the images. The images are based on a sky imager system with fish-eye lens optic to cover a maximum area. After a calibration step, the image is rectified to enable linear prediction of cloud movement. In a subsequent step, the clear sky model is estimated on actual high dynamic range images and combined with a threshold based approach to segment clouds from sky. In the final stage, a multi hypothesis linear tracking framework estimates cloud movement, velocity and possible coverage of a given photovoltaic power station. We employ a Kalman filter framework that efficiently operates on the rectified images. The evaluation on real world data suggests high coverage prediction accuracy above 75%.
The applicability of characteristics of local magnetic fields for more precise determination of localization of subjects and/or objects in indoor environments, such as railway stations, airports, exhibition halls, showrooms, or shopping centers, is considered. An investigation has been carried out to find out whether and how low-cost magnetic field sensors and mobile robot platforms can be used to create maps that improve the accuracy and robustness of later navigation with smartphones or other devices.
The aim of this work is the application and evaluation of a method to visually detect markers at a distance of up to five meters and determine their real-world position. Combinations of cameras and lenses with different parameters were studied to determine the optimal configuration. Based on this configuration, camera images were taken after proper calibration. These images are then transformed into a bird's eye view using a homography matrix. The homography matrix is calculated with four-point pairs as well as with coordinate transformations. The obtained images show the ground plane un distorted, making it possible to convert a pixel position into a real-world position with a conversion factor. The proposed approach helps to effectively create data sets for training neural networks for navigation purposes.
This paper presents an approach for implementing an automated hit detection and score calculation system for a steel dartboard using a standard webcam. First, the rectilinear field separations of the dartboard are described mathematically by means of line slopes and are than stored. These slopes serve as a basis for later score calculation. In addition, thrown darts have to be detected and the pixel at which the dart cuts the dartboard has to be determined. When this information is known, a comparison is made using the line slopes, allowing the field number of the hit to be detected. The decision for single, double or triple hit is made by evaluating the defined colors on the dartboard. All these functions are then packaged in a Matlab GUI.
Sweaty has already participated several times in RoboCup soccer competitions (Adult Size). Now the work is focused coordinating the play of two robots. Moreover, we are working on stabilizing the gait by adding additional sensor information. An ongoing work is the optimization of the control strategy by balancing between impedance and position control. By minimizing the jerk, gait and overall gameplay should improve significantly.

Correlation Clustering, also called the minimum cost Multicut problem, is the process of grouping data by pairwise similarities. It has proven to be effective on clustering problems, where the number of classes is unknown. However, not only is the Multicut problem NP-hard, an undirected graph G with n vertices representing single images has at most edges, thus making it challenging to implement correlation clustering for large datasets. In this work, we propose Multi-Stage Multicuts (MSM) as a scalable approach for image clustering. Specifically, we solve minimum cost Multicut problems across multiple distributed compute units. Our approach not only allows to solve problem instances which are too large to fit into the shared memory of a single compute node, but it also achieves significant speedups while preserving the clustering accuracy at the same time. We evaluate our proposed method on the CIFAR10 …
Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) is a long-standing task in computer vision. Current approaches based on the tracking by detection paradigm either require some sort of domain knowledge or supervision to associate data correctly into tracks. In this work, we present a self-supervised multiple object tracking approach based on visual features and minimum cost lifted multicuts. Our method is based on straight-forward spatio-temporal cues that can be extracted from neighboring frames in an image sequences without supervision. Clustering based on these cues enables us to learn the required appearance invariances for the tracking task at hand and train an AutoEncoder to generate suitable latent representations. Thus, the resulting latent representations can serve as robust appearance cues for tracking even over large temporal distances where no reliable spatio-temporal features can be extracted. We show that, despite being trained without using the provided annotations, our model provides competitive results on the challenging MOT Benchmark for pedestrian tracking.
In this work, we evaluate two different image clustering objectives, k-means clustering and correlation clustering, in the context of Triplet Loss induced feature space embeddings. Specifically, we train a convolutional neural network to learn discriminative features by optimizing two popular versions of the Triplet Loss in order to study their clustering properties under the assumption of noisy labels. Additionally, we propose a new, simple Triplet Loss formulation, which shows desirable properties with respect to formal clustering objectives and outperforms the existing methods. We evaluate all three Triplet loss formulations for K-means and correlation clustering on the CIFAR-10 image classification dataset.
Estimating the Robustness of Classification Models by the Structure of the Learned Feature-Space
(2022)
Over the last decade, the development of deep image classification networks has mostly been driven by the search for the best performance in terms of classification accuracy on standardized benchmarks like ImageNet. More recently, this focus has been expanded by the notion of model robustness, \ie the generalization abilities of models towards previously unseen changes in the data distribution. While new benchmarks, like ImageNet-C, have been introduced to measure robustness properties, we argue that fixed testsets are only able to capture a small portion of possible data variations and are thus limited and prone to generate new overfitted solutions. To overcome these drawbacks, we suggest to estimate the robustness of a model directly from the structure of its learned feature-space. We introduce robustness indicators which are obtained via unsupervised clustering of latent representations from a trained classifier and show very high correlations to the model performance on corrupted test data.

Engineering, construction and operation of complex machines involves a wide range of complicated, simultaneous tasks, which potentially could be automated. In this work, we focus on perception tasks in such systems, investigating deep learning approaches for multi-task transfer learning with limited training data. We show an approach that takes advantage of a technical systems’ focus on selected objects and their properties. We create focused representations and simultaneously solve joint objectives in a system through multi-task learning with convolutional autoencoders. The focused representations are used as a starting point for the data-saving solution of the additional tasks. The efficiency of this approach is demonstrated using images and tasks of an autonomous circular crane with a grapple.
Method for controlling a device, in particular, a prosthetic hand or a robotic arm (US20200327705A1)
(2020)
A method for controlling a device, in particular a prosthetic hand or a robotic arm, includes using an operator-mounted camera to detect at least one marker positioned on or in relation to the device. Starting from the detection of the at least one marker, a predefined movement of the operator together with the camera is detected and is used to trigger a corresponding action of the device. The predefined movement of the operator is detected in the form of a line of sight by means of camera tracking. A system for controlling a device, in particular a prosthetic hand or a robotic arm, includes a pair of AR glasses adapted to detect the at least one marker and to detect the predefined movement of the operator.
Server Side Rendering (SSR), Single Page Application (SPA), and Static Site Generation (SSG) are the three most popular ways of making modern Web applications today. If we go deep into these processes, this can be helpful for the developers and clients. Developers benefit since they do not need to learn other programming languages and can instead utilize their own experience to build different kinds of Web applications; for example, a developer can use only JavaScript in the three approaches. On the other hand, clients can give their users a better experience.
This Master Thesis’s purpose was to compare these processes with a demo application for each and give users a solid understanding of which process they should follow. We discussed the step-by-step process of making three applications in the above mentioned categories. Then we compared those based on criteria such as performance, security, Search Engine Optimization, developer preference, learning curve, content and purpose of the Web, user interface, and user experience. It also talked about the technologies such as JavaScript, React, Node.js, and Next.js, and why and where to use them. The goals we specified before the program creation were fulfilled and can be validated by comparing the solutions we gave for user problems, which was the application’s primary purpose.
A versatile liquid metal (LM) printing process enabling the fabrication of various fully printed devices such as intra- and interconnect wires, resistors, diodes, transistors, and basic circuit elements such as inverters which are process compatible with other digital printing and thin film structuring methods for integration is presented. For this, a glass capillary-based direct-write method for printing LMs such as eutectic gallium alloys, exploring the potential for fully printed LM-enabled devices is demonstrated. Examples for successful device fabrication include resistors, p–n diodes, and field effect transistors. The device functionality and easiness of one integrated fabrication flow shows that the potential of LM printing is far exceeding the use of interconnecting conventional electronic devices in printed electronics.
Hintergrund:
The nonlinear behavior of inverters is largely impacted by the interlocking and switching times. A method for online identifying the switching times of semiconductors in inverters is presented in the following work. By being able to identify these times, it is possible to compensate for the nonlinear behavior, reduce interlocking time, and use the information for diagnostic purposes. The method is first theoretically derived by examining different inverter switching cases and determining potential identification possibilities. It is then modified to consider the entire module for more robust identification. The methodology, including limitations and boundary conditions, is investigated and a comparison of two methods of measurement acquisition is provided. Subsequently the developed hardware is described and the implementation in an FPGA is carried out. Finally, the results are presented, discussed, and potential challenges are encountered.
Current Harmonics Control Algorithm for inverter-fed Nonlinear Synchronous Electrical Machines
(2023)
Current harmonics are a well known challenge of electrical machines. They can be undesirable as they can cause instabilities in the control, generate additional losses and lead to torque ripples with noise. However, they can also be specifically generated in new methods in order to improve the machine behavior. In this paper, an algorithm for controlling current harmonics is proposed. It can be described as a combination of different PI controllers for defined angles of the machine with repetitive control characteristics for whole revolutions. The controller design is explained and important points where linearization is necessary are shown. Furthermore, the limits are analyzed and, for validation, measurement results with a permanently excited synchronous machine on the test bench are considered.
The nonlinear behavior of inverters is mainly influenced by the interlocking and switching times of the semiconductors. In the following work, a method is presented that enables the possibility of an online identification of the switching times of the semiconductors. This information allows a compensation of the non-linear behavior, a reduction of the locking time and can be used for diagnostic purposes. First, a theoretical derivation of the method is made by considering different cases when switching of the inverter and deriving identification possibilities. The method is then extended so that the entire module is taken into account. Furthermore, a possible theoretical implementation is shown. After the methodology has been investigated with possible limitations, boundary conditions and with respect to real hardware, an implementation in the FPGA is performed. Finally, the results are presented, discussed
and further improvements are presented in an outlook.

This research presents a comprehensive exploration of hydroponic systems and their practical applications, with a focus on innovative solutions for managing environmental and analytical sensors in hydroponic setups. Hydroponic systems, which enable soilless cultivation, have gained increasing importance in modern agriculture due to their resource-efficient and high-yield nature.
The study delves into the development and deployment of the SensVert system, an adaptable solution tailored for hydroponic environments. SensVert offers adaptability and accessibility to farmers across various agricultural domains, addressing contemporary challenges in supervising and managing environmental and analytical sensors within hydroponic setups. Leveraging LoRa technology for seamless wireless data transmission, SensVert empowers users with a feature-rich dashboard for real-time monitoring and control. The study showcases the practical implementation of SensVert through a single sensor node, seamlessly integrating temperature, humidity, pressure, light, and pH sensors. The system automates pH regulation, employing the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, and precisely controls liquid dosing using a PID controller. At the core of SensVert lies an architecture comprising The Things Stack as the network server, Node-Red as the application server, and Grafana as the user interface. These components synergize within a local network hosted on a Raspberry Pi; effectively mitigating challenges associated with data packet transmission in areas with limited internet connectivity.
As part of ongoing research, this work also paves the way for future advancements. These include the establishment of a wireless sensor network (WSN) utilizing LoRa technology, enabling seamless over-the-air sensor node updates for maintenance or replacement scenarios. These enhancements promise to further elevate the system's reliability and functionality within hydroponic cultivation, fostering sustainable agricultural practices.
Electrolyte-gated transistors (EGTs) represent an interesting alternative to conventional dielectric-gating to reduce the required high supply voltage for printed electronic applications. Here, a type of ink-jet printable ion-gel is introduced and optimized to fabricate a chemically crosslinked ion-gel by self-assembled gelation, without additional crosslinking processes, e.g., UV-curing. For the self-assembled gelation, poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) are used as the polymer backbone and chemical crosslinker, respectively, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([EMIM][OTf]) is utilized as an ionic species to ensure ionic conductivity. The as-synthesized ion-gel exhibits an ionic conductivity of ≈5 mS cm−1 and an effective capacitance of 5.4 µF cm−2 at 1 Hz. The ion-gel is successfully employed in EGTs with an indium oxide (In2O3) channel, which shows on/off-ratios of up to 1.3 × 106 and a subthreshold swing of 80.62 mV dec−1.
In this study, a facile method to fabricate a cohesive ion‐gel based gate insulator for electrolyte‐gated transistors is introduced. The adhesive and flexible ion‐gel can be laminated easily on the semiconducting channel and electrode manually by hand. The ion‐gel is synthesized by a straightforward technique without complex procedures and shows a remarkable ionic conductivity of 4.8 mS cm−1 at room temperature. When used as a gate insulator in electrolyte‐gated transistors (EGTs), an on/off current ratio of 2.24×104 and a subthreshold swing of 117 mV dec−1 can be achieved. This performance is roughly equivalent to that of ink drop‐casted ion‐gels in electrolyte‐gated transistors, indicating that the film‐attachment method might represent a valuable alternative to ink drop‐casting for the fabrication of gate insulators.
The current thesis conducts the study on the integration of digitalization techniques aimed at improving energy supply efficiency in off-grid energy systems. The primary objective is to fortify the security of energy supply in remote areas, particularly in instances of adverse weather conditions, unanticipated changes in load and fluctuations in the performance of renewable energy systems. This objective is to be achieved through the implementation of a smart load management strategy in stand-alone photovoltaic systems (SAPVS). This strategy involves deployment of forecasting algorithms on an edge device that operates with limited processing resources in an environment characterized for the lack of internet connection. The edge device is designed to interact with a smart home gateway that prioritizes, and schedules smart appliances based on the forecasted state of charge (SOC) in the 36-hours ahead of the SAPVS operation (the implementation of the loads schedule deployed on the Home Assistant device is out of the scope of the tasks implemented for this project).
The edge device, developed using a Raspberry Pi 3B+, was specifically intended for being implemented along with a SAPVS, in remote areas such as health stations in Africa and tropical islands, providing communities with a reliable source of electrical energy. The deployment of the strategy was carried out in four phases. The first phase involved the implementation of an Extraction-Transformation-Load (ETL) pipeline, where data was gathered from various heterogeneous hardware sources of an implemented test system that served as the enabler and testbench of this research, this test stand is composed of power electronics components such as an inverter, a MPPT solar charge controller, a smart meter, and a BOS LiFePo4 battery prototype. In the transformation stage, a data model was developed to identify the most critical parameters of the energy system, and to eliminate outliers and null values. In the load stage, a local SQL database was established for saving and structuring the data gathered and to ensure high-quality data with defined units and casting.
The second phase involved data analysis to identify the relevant features and potential exogenous variables for the forecasting model to implement. In the third phase, an Auto Regressive Moving Average (ARMA) model with two selected exogenous variables was implemented to forecast the AC load consumption profile for the 36- hours ahead of the off-grid system operation. The final phase involved the information exchange with the Home Assistant device, by transferring to it from the edge device the battery SOC present value and the predicted 36-hour ahead AC load profile information for prioritization and scheduling of loads; this through an MQTT interface.
The outcome of the experiment was a successful deployment of a data engineering and data forecasting approach that enabled data quality strategy implementation, local database storage, and forecasting algorithms on a processing and internet-constrained edge device. The interface with a home assistant implementation resulted in the successful execution of smart load management endeavors in an off-grid system, thereby enhancing the energy security of supply and contributing to the advancement of data-driven strategies in the rural electrification sector.
This thesis emphasizes the significance of digitalization strategies in smart SAPVS and highlights the potential of edge computing solutions in achieving seamless energy management in smart homes.
Neurostimulation durch Musik
(2020)
The fast and cost-effective manufacturing of tools for thermoforming is an essential requirement to shorten the development time of products. Thus, additive processes are used increasingly in tooling for thermoforming of plastic sheets. However, a disadvantage of many additive methods is that they are highly cost-intensive, since complex systems based on laser technology and expensive metal powders are needed. Therefore, this paper examines how to work with favorable additive methods, e.g. Binder Jetting, to manufacture tools, which provide sufficient strength for thermoforming. The use of comparatively low-priced inkjet technology for the layer construction and a polymer plaster as material can be expected to result in significant cost reductions. Based on a case study using a cowling (engine bonnet) for an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), the development of a complex tool for thermoforming is demonstrated. The object in this study is to produce a tool for a complex-shaped component in small numbers and high quality in a short time and at reasonable costs. Within the tooling process, integrated vacuum channels are implemented in additive tooling without the need for additional post-processing (for example, drilling). In addition, special technical challenges, such as the demolding of undercuts or the parting of the tool are explained. All process steps from tool design to the use of the additively manufactured tool are analyzed. Based on the manufacturing of a small series of cowlings for a UAV made of plastic sheets (ABS), it is shown, that the Binder Jetting offers sufficient mechanical and thermal strength for additive tooling. In addition, an economic evaluation of the tool manufacturing and a detailed consideration of the required manufacturing times for the different process steps are carried out. Finally, a comparison is made with conventional and alternative additive methods of tooling.
The monitoring of industrial environments ensures that highly automated processes run without interruption. However, even if the industrial machines themselves are monitored, the communication lines are currently not continuously monitored in todays installations. They are checked usually only during maintenance intervals or in case of error. In addition, the cables or connected machines usually have to be removed from the system for the duration of the test. To overcome these drawbacks, we have developed and implemented a cost-efficient and continuous signal monitoring of Ethernet-based industrial bus systems. Several methods have been developed to assess the quality of the cable. These methods can be classified to either passive or active. Active methods are not suitable if interruption of the communication is undesired. Passive methods, on the other hand, require oversampling, which calls for expensive hardware. In this paper, a novel passive method combined with undersampling targeting cost-efficient hardware is proposed.

The increasing number of prosumers and the accompanying greater use of decentralised energy resources (DERs) bring new opportunities and challenges for the traditional electricity systems and the electricity markets. Microgrids, virtual power plants (VPPs), peer-to-peer (P2P) trading and federated power plants (FPPs) propose different schemes for prosumer coordination and have the potential of becoming the new paradigm of electricity market and power system operation. This paper proposes a P2P trading scheme for energy communities that negotiates power flows between participating prosumers with insufficient renewable power supply and prosumers with surplus supply in such a way that the community welfare is maximized while avoiding critical grid conditions. For this purpose, the proposed scheme is based on an Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem with a Multi-Bilateral Economic Dispatch (MBED) formulation as an objective function. The solution is realized in a fully decentralized manner on the basis of the Relaxed Consensus + Innovations (RCI) algorithm. Network security is ensured by a tariff-based system organized by a network agent that makes use of product differentiation capabilities of the RCI algorithm. It is found that the proposed mechanism accurately finds and prevents hazardous network operations, such as over-voltage in grid buses, while successfully providing economic value to prosumers’ renewable generation within the scope of a P2P, free market.
The mathematical representations of data in the Spherical Harmonic (SH) domain has recently regained increasing interest in the machine learning community. This technical report gives an in-depth introduction to the theoretical foundation and practical implementation of SH representations, summarizing works on rotation invariant and equivariant features, as well as convolutions and exact correlations of signals on spheres. In extension, these methods are then generalized from scalar SH representations to Vectorial Harmonics (VH), providing the same capabilities for 3d vector fields on spheres.
Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) is a long-standing task in computer vision. Current approaches based on the tracking by detection paradigm either require some sort of domain knowledge or supervision to associate data correctly into tracks. In this work, we present an unsupervised multiple object tracking approach based on visual features and minimum cost lifted multicuts. Our method is based on straight-forward spatio-temporal cues that can be extracted from neighboring frames in an image sequences without superivison. Clustering based on these cues enables us to learn the required appearance invariances for the tracking task at hand and train an autoencoder to generate suitable latent representation. Thus, the resulting latent representations can serve as robust appearance cues for tracking even over large temporal distances where no reliable spatio-temporal features could be extracted. We show that, despite being trained without using the provided annotations, our model provides competitive results on the challenging MOT Benchmark for pedestrian tracking.
Due to the rapidly increasing storage consumption worldwide, as well as the expectation of continuous availability of information, the complexity of administration in today’s data centers is growing permanently. Integrated techniques for monitoring hard disks can increase the reliability of storage systems. However, these techniques often lack intelligent data analysis to perform predictive maintenance. To solve this problem, machine learning algorithms can be used to detect potential failures in advance and prevent them. In this paper, an unsupervised model for predicting hard disk failures based on Isolation Forest is proposed. Consequently, a method is presented that can deal with the highly imbalanced datasets, as the experiment on the Backblaze benchmark dataset demonstrates.
The recent successes and wide spread application of compute intensive machine learning and data analytics methods have been boosting the usage of the Python programming language on HPC systems. While Python provides many advantages for the users, it has not been designed with a focus on multiuser environments or parallel programming - making it quite challenging to maintain stable and secure Python workflows on a HPC system. In this paper, we analyze the key problems induced by the usage of Python on HPC clusters and sketch appropriate workarounds for efficiently maintaining multi-user Python software environments, securing and restricting resources of Python jobs and containing Python processes, while focusing on Deep Learning applications running on GPU clusters.
Diffracted waves carry high resolution information that can help interpreting fine structural details at a scale smaller than the seismic wavelength. Because of the low signal-to-noise ratio of diffracted waves, it is challenging to preserve them during processing and to identify them in the final data. It is, therefore, a traditional approach to pick manually the diffractions. However, such task is tedious and often prohibitive, thus, current attention is given to domain adaptation. Those methods aim to transfer knowledge from a labeled domain to train the model, and then infer on the real unlabeled data. In this regard, it is common practice to create a synthetic labeled training dataset, followed by testing on unlabeled real data. Unfortunately, such procedure may fail due to the existing gap between the synthetic and the real distribution since quite often synthetic data oversimplifies the problem, and consequently the transfer learning becomes a hard and non-trivial procedure. Furthermore, deep neural networks are characterized by their high sensitivity towards cross-domain distribution shift. In this work, we present deep learning model that builds a bridge between both distributions creating a semi-synthetic datatset that fills in the gap between synthetic and real domains. More specifically, our proposal is a feed-forward, fully convolutional neural network for imageto-image translation that allows to insert synthetic diffractions while preserving the original reflection signal. A series of experiments validate that our approach produces convincing seismic data containing the desired synthetic diffractions.
Diffracted waves carry high‐resolution information that can help interpreting fine structural details at a scale smaller than the seismic wavelength. However, the diffraction energy tends to be weak compared to the reflected energy and is also sensitive to inaccuracies in the migration velocity, making the identification of its signal challenging. In this work, we present an innovative workflow to automatically detect scattering points in the migration dip angle domain using deep learning. By taking advantage of the different kinematic properties of reflected and diffracted waves, we separate the two types of signals by migrating the seismic amplitudes to dip angle gathers using prestack depth imaging in the local angle domain. Convolutional neural networks are a class of deep learning algorithms able to learn to extract spatial information about the data in order to identify its characteristics. They have now become the method of choice to solve supervised pattern recognition problems. In this work, we use wave equation modelling to create a large and diversified dataset of synthetic examples to train a network into identifying the probable position of scattering objects in the subsurface. After giving an intuitive introduction to diffraction imaging and deep learning and discussing some of the pitfalls of the methods, we evaluate the trained network on field data and demonstrate the validity and good generalization performance of our algorithm. We successfully identify with a high‐accuracy and high‐resolution diffraction points, including those which have a low signal to noise and reflection ratio. We also show how our method allows us to quickly scan through high dimensional data consisting of several versions of a dataset migrated with a range of velocities to overcome the strong effect of incorrect migration velocity on the diffraction signal.
Extracting horizon surfaces from key reflections in a seismic image is an important step of the interpretation process. Interpreting a reflection surface in a geologically complex area is a difficult and time-consuming task, and it requires an understanding of the 3D subsurface geometry. Common methods to help automate the process are based on tracking waveforms in a local window around manual picks. Those approaches often fail when the wavelet character lacks lateral continuity or when reflections are truncated by faults. We have formulated horizon picking as a multiclass segmentation problem and solved it by supervised training of a 3D convolutional neural network. We design an efficient architecture to analyze the data over multiple scales while keeping memory and computational needs to a practical level. To allow for uncertainties in the exact location of the reflections, we use a probabilistic formulation to express the horizons position. By using a masked loss function, we give interpreters flexibility when picking the training data. Our method allows experts to interactively improve the results of the picking by fine training the network in the more complex areas. We also determine how our algorithm can be used to extend horizons to the prestack domain by following reflections across offsets planes, even in the presence of residual moveout. We validate our approach on two field data sets and show that it yields accurate results on nontrivial reflectivity while being trained from a workable amount of manually picked data. Initial training of the network takes approximately 1 h, and the fine training and prediction on a large seismic volume take a minute at most.
Active participation of industrial enterprises in electricity markets - a generic modeling approach
(2021)
Industrial enterprises represent a significant portion of electricity consumers with the potential of providing demand-side energy flexibility from their production processes and on-site energy assets. Methods are needed for the active and profitable participation of such enterprises in the electricity markets especially with variable prices, where the energy flexibility available in their manufacturing, utility and energy systems can be assessed and quantified. This paper presents a generic model library equipped with optimal control for energy flexibility purposes. The components in the model library represent the different technical units of an industrial enterprise on material, media, and energy flow levels with their process constraints. The paper also presents a case study simulation of a steel-powder manufacturing plant using the model library. Its energy flexibility was assessed when the plant procured its electrical energy at fixed and variable electricity prices. In the simulated case study, flexibility use at dynamic prices resulted in a 6% cost reduction compared to a fixed-price scenario, with battery storage and the manufacturing system making the largest contributions to flexibility.
In many application areas, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has led to breakthroughs. In Curriculum Learning, the Machine Learning algorithm is not randomly presented with examples, but in a meaningful order of increasing difficulty. This has been used in many application areas to further improve the results of learning systems or to reduce their learning time. Such approaches range from learning plans created manually by domain experts to those created automatically. The automated creation of learning plans is one of the biggest challenges. In this work, we investigate an approach in which a trainer learns in parallel and analogously to the student to automatically create a learning plan for the student during this Double Deep Reinforcement Learning (DDRL). Three Reward functions, Friendly, Adversarial, and Dynamic based on the learner’s reward are compared. The domain for evaluation is kicking with variable distance, direction and relative ball position in the SimSpark simulated soccer environment. As a result, Statistic Curriculum Learning (SCL) performs better than a random curriculum with respect to training time and result quality. DDRL reaches a comparable quality as the baseline and outperforms it significantly in shorter trainings in the distance-direction subdomain reducing the number of required training cycles by almost 50%.

Significant progress in the development and commercialization of electrically conductive adhesives has been made. This makes shingling a very attractive approach for solar cell interconnection. In this study, we investigate the shading tolerance of two types of solar modules based on shingle interconnection: first, the already commercialized string approach, and second, the matrix technology where solar cells are intrinsically interconnected in parallel and in series. An experimentally validated LTspice model predicts major advantages for the power output of the matrix layout under partial shading. Diagonal as well as random shading of a 1.6-m2 solar module is examined. Power gains of up to 73.8 % for diagonal shading and up to 96.5 % for random shading are found for the matrix technology compared to the standard string approach. The key factor is an increased current extraction due to lateral current flows. Especially under minor shading, the matrix technology benefits from an increased fill factor as well. Under diagonal shading, we find the probability of parts of the matrix module being bypassed to be reduced by 40 % in comparison to the string module. In consequence, the overall risk of hotspot occurrence in matrix modules is decreased significantly.

Analysis of Amplitude and Phase Errors in Digital-Beamforming Radars for Automotive Applications
(2020)
Fundamentally, automotive radar sensors with Digital-Beamforming (DBF) use several transmitter and receiver antennas to measure the direction of the target. However, hardware imperfections, tolerances in the feeding lines of the antennas, coupling effects as well as temperature changes and ageing will cause amplitude and phase errors. These errors can lead to misinterpretation of the data and result in hazardous actions of the autonomous system. First, the impact of amplitude and phase errors on angular estimation is discussed and analyzed by simulations. The results are compared with the measured errors of a real radar sensor. Further, a calibration method is implemented and evaluated by measurements.

Blockchain interoperability: the state of heterogenous blockchain-to-blockchain communication
(2023)
Blockchain technology has been increasingly adopted over the past few years since the introduction of Bitcoin, with several blockchain architectures and solutions being proposed. Most proposed solutions have been developed in isolation, without a standard protocol or cryptographic structure to work with. This has led to the problem of interoperability, where solutions running on different blockchain platforms are unable to communicate, limiting the scope of use. With blockchains being adopted in a variety of fields such as the Internet of Things, it is expected that the problem of interoperability if not addressed quickly, will stifle technology advancement. This paper presents the current state of interoperability solutions proposed for heterogenous blockchain systems. A look is taken at interoperability solutions, not only for cryptocurrencies, but also for general data-based use cases. Current open issues in heterogenous blockchain interoperability are presented. Additionally, some possible research directions are presented to enhance and to extend the existing blockchain interoperability solutions. It was discovered that though there are a number of proposed solutions in literature, few have seen real-world implementation. The lack of blockchain-specific standards has slowed the progress of interoperability. It was also realized that most of the proposed solutions are developed targeting cryptocurrency-based applications.
The new input method was developed for research acoustic localization, including real and virtual sound sources. For these types of research, the input method plays an important role in the investigation of the auditory localization of sound sources in the collection of valid and meaningful data. The input method using LED array is based on the localization test, which is already used in the acoustics laboratory of the Peter-Osypka-Institute. The current input method via tablet with continuous input surface generates a high inaccuracy and error variance compared to the usual discontinuous input. To minimize this type of error for future measurements, an alternative method will be implemented as part of this bachelor thesis. The methodology of the alternative input method is based on the use of a controllable LED array with rotary encoder and push button. For this, an angular range from -90° to 90° with a 1° angular resolution shall be realized. The LED-array enables a visual representation while localizing sound sources.

In this paper, we describe a first publicly available fine-grained product recognition dataset based on leaflet images. Using advertisement leaflets, collected over several years from different European retailers, we provide a total of 41.6k manually annotated product images in 832 classes. Further, we investigate three different approaches for this fine-grained product classification task, Classification by Image, by Text, as well as by Image and Text. The approach "Classification by Text" uses the text extracted directly from the leaflet product images. We show, that the combination of image and text as input improves the classification of visual difficult to distinguish products. The final model leads to an accuracy of 96.4% with a Top-3 score of 99.2%. We release our code at https://github.com/ladwigd/Leaflet-Product-Classification.
Entity Matching (EM) defines the task of learning to group objects by transferring semantic concepts from example groups (=entities) to unseen data. Despite the general availability of image data in the context of many EM-problems, most currently available EM-algorithms solely rely on (textual) meta data. In this paper, we introduce the first publicly available large-scale dataset for "visual entity matching", based on a production level use case in the retail domain. Using scanned advertisement leaflets, collected over several years from different European retailers, we provide a total of ~786k manually annotated, high resolution product images containing ~18k different individual retail products which are grouped into ~3k entities. The annotation of these product entities is based on a price comparison task, where each entity forms an equivalence class of comparable products. Following on a first baseline evaluation, we show that the proposed "visual entity matching" constitutes a novel learning problem which can not sufficiently be solved using standard image based classification and retrieval algorithms. Instead, novel approaches which allow to transfer example based visual equivalent classes to new data are needed to address the proposed problem. The aim of this paper is to provide a benchmark for such algorithms.
Information about the dataset, evaluation code and download instructions are provided under https://www.retail-786k.org/.

During the day-to-day exploitation of localization systems in mines, the technical staff tends to incorrectly rearrange radio equipment: positions of devices may not be accurately marked on a map or their positions may not correspond to the truth. This situation may lead to positioning inaccuracies and errors in the operation of the localization system. This paper presents two Bayesian algorithms for the automatic corrections of positions of the equipment on the map using trajectories restored by the inertial measurement units mounted to mobile objects, like pedestrians and vehicles. As a basis, a predefined map of the mine represented as undirected weighted graph was used as input. The algorithms were implemented using the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) approach. The results prove that both methods are capable to detect misplacement of access points and to provide corresponding corrections. The discrete Bayesian filter outperforms the unscented Kalman filter, which, however, requires more computational power.
This paper presents an extended version of a previously published Bayesian algorithm for the automatic correction of the positions of the equipment on the map with simultaneous mobile object trajectory localization (SLAM) in underground mine environment represented by undirected graph. The proposed extended SLAM algorithm requires much less preliminary data on possible equipment positions and uses an additional resample move algorithm to significantly improve the overall performance.
