All you need is sleep
(2016)
In 21st century, the century when the humanity hopes to embark on interplanetary travel, we are yet to fully reach an understanding of our very own idiosyncratic terra incognita – the human sleep. Sleep is a highly conserved evolutionary process that constitutes approximately one third of our life, and the lack or inadequate sleep may lead to impairment across multiple cognitive domains (Tononi and Cirelli, 2014; Lim and Dinges, 2010). Sleep deprivation also leads to aberrant brain functioning, immunological and metabolic collapse, and if it is sufficiently prolonged it will ultimately lead to death (Tononi and Cirelli, 2014).
In this study, we tested the function of a replica of the over 500-year-old original of the
famous Franconian Imperial Knight Götz von Berlichingen’s first “iron hand”, which we
reconstructed by computer-aided design (CAD) and recently printed using a multi-material
3D printer. In different everyday tasks, the artificial hand prosthesis proved to be remarkably
helpful. Thus, the hand could hold a wine glass, some grapes, or a smartphone. With a
suitable pencil, even writing was possible without any problem. Although for all these
functions the healthy other hand was necessary to assist at the beginning, the artificial hand
is an astonishing mechanical aid with many possibilities. Therefore, in certain cases, the
non-invasive approach of a passive mechanical hand replacement, which is an individual,
quick and cheap solution due to modern 3D printing, may always be worth considering
also for today’s requirements.
Routine nuclear cardiology examinations indicate heart rate, cardiac rhythm, the height of cardiac pulse and respiration rhythm. It would be of interest to study whether these data, especially if the same tests are repeated, can indicate patients’ well being in the future and perhaps patients’ life span, other factors being equal. Related old theories and suggestions are mentioned. Furthermore, some drugs like I-f channel antagonists and stress tests testing cardiac reserves could support such a study.
In the dual membrane fuel cell (DM-Cell), protons formed at the anode and oxygen ions formed at the cathode migrate through their respective dense electrolytes to react and form water in a porous composite layer called dual membrane (DM). The DM-Cell concept was experimentally proven (as detailed in Part I of this paper). To describe the electrochemical processes occurring in this novel fuel cell, a mathematical model has been developed which focuses on the DM as the characteristic feature of the DM-Cell. In the model, the porous composite DM is treated as a continuum medium characterized by effective macro-homogeneous properties. To simulate the polarization behavior of the DM-Cell, the potential distribution in the DM is related to the flux of protons and oxygen ions in the conducting phases by introducing kinetic and transport equations into charge balances. Since water pressure may affect the overall formation rate, water mass balances across the DM and transport equations are also considered. The satisfactory comparison with available experimental results suggests that the model provides sound indications on the effects of key design parameters and operating conditions on cell behavior and performance.

Researchers are developing new GNSS receivers and antennas based on an innovative signal-processing scheme to significantly improve GNSS tracking reliability and accuracy under degraded signal conditions. It is based on the principles of synthetic-aperture radar. Like in a multi-antenna phased array receiver, GNSS signals from different spatial locations are combined coherently forming an optimized synthetic antenna-gain pattern. The method is implemented in a real-time PC-based software receiver and works with GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo signals. Multiple frequencies are generally supported. The idea of synthetic-aperture processing is realized as a coherent summation of correlation values of each satellite over the so-called beamforming interval. Each correlation value is multiplied with a phase factor. For example, the phase factor can be chosen to compensate for the relative antenna motion over the beam-forming interval and the resulting sum of the scaled correlation values represents a coherent correlation value maximizing the line of sight signal power.
A disturbed synchronization of the ventricular contraction can cause a highly developed systolic heart failure in affected patients with reduction of the left ventricular ejection fraction, which can often be explained by a diseased left bundle branch block (LBBB). If medication remains unresponsive, the concerned patients will be treated with a cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) system. The aim of this study was to integrate His-bundle pacing into the Offenburg heart rhythm model in order to visualize the electrical pacing field generated by His-Bundle-Pacing. Modelling and electrical field simulation activities were performed with the software CST (Computer Simulation Technology) from Dessault Systèms. CRT with biventricular pacing is to be achieved by an apical right ventricular electrode and an additional left ventricular electrode, which is floated into the coronary vein sinus. The non-responder rate of the CRT therapy is about one third of the CRT patients. His- Bundle-Pacing represents a physiological alternative to conventional cardiac pacing and cardiac resynchronization. An electrode implanted in the His-bundle emits a stronger electrical pacing field than the electrical pacing field of conventional cardiac pacemakers. The pacing of the Hisbundle was performed by the Medtronic Select Secure 3830 electrode with pacing voltage amplitudes of 3 V, 2 V and 1,5 V in combination with a pacing pulse duration of 1 ms. Compared to conventional pacemaker pacing, His-bundle pacing is capable of bridging LBBB conduction disorders in the left ventricle. The His-bundle pacing electrical field is able to spread via the physiological pathway in the right and left ventricles for CRT with a narrow QRS-complex in the surface ECG.
Background: A disturbed synchronization of the ventricular contraction can cause a highly developed systolic heart failure in affected patients, which can often be explained by a diseased left bundle branch block (LBBB). If medication remains unresponsive, the concerned patients will be treated with a cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) system. The aim of this study was to integrate His bundle pacing into the Offenburg heart rhythm model in order to visualize the electrical pacing field generated by His bundle pacing.
Methods: Modelling and electrical field simulation activities were performed with the software CST (Computer Simulation Technology) from Dessault Systèms. CRT with biventricular pacing is to be achieved by an apical right ventricular electrode and an additional left ventricular electrode, which is floated into the coronary vein sinus. This conventional type of biventricular pacing leads to a reduction of the left ventricular ejection fraction. Furthermore, the non-responder rate of the CRT therapy is about one third of the CRT patients.
Results: His bundle pacing represents a physiological alternative to conventional cardiac pacing and cardiac resynchronization. An electrode implanted in the His bundle emits a stronger electrical pacing field than the electrical pacing field of conventional cardiac pacemakers. The pacing of the His bundle was performed by the Medtronic Select Secure 3830 electrode with pacing voltage amplitudes of 3 V, 2 V and 1.5 V in combination with a pacing pulse duration of 1 ms.
Conclusions: Compared to conventional cardiac pacemaker pacing, His bundle pacing is capable of bridging LBBB conduction disorders in the left ventricle. The His bundle pacing electrical field is able to spread via the physiological pathway in the right and left ventricles for CRT with a narrow QRS-complex in the surface ECG.
This study presents some results from a monitoring project with night ventilation and earthto-air heat exchanger. Both techniques refer to air-based low-energy cooling. As these technologies are limited to specific boundary conditions (e.g. moderate summer climate, low temperatures during night, or low ground temperatures, respectively), water-based low-energy cooling may be preferred in many projects. A comparison of the night-ventilated building with a ground-cooled building shows major differences in both concepts.

The German Weather Service (DWD) releases a heat warning, when the weather forecast provides a warm, humid, sunny, and windless weather condition during the next days. The heat stress is calculated by the so called Klima-Michel model. If the apparent air temperature exceeds ca. 32°C / 38°C, there is a strong / extreme heat stress. The smallest forecast area is each administrative district. As people (and especially the vulnerable population) stay most of the time indoors, the heat health warning system was extended by the prediction of heat stress in typical rooms. Therewith it is feasible to forecast the heat stress using a combination of the outdoor and indoor heat stress. The prediction for the indoor heat stress is based on the same weather forecast like the Heat Health Warning Systems (HHWS).and calculates the heat stress by the PMV-model (predicted mean vote). Based on a sophisticated data analysis and simulation study, realistic but summer-critical living situations were defined and implemented in the building simulation program ESP-r. As the simulation runs especially for extreme weather conditions, a simplified building model cannot be used. Standardized input/output routines and an adaptive handover of start values provide for short run times for each forecast area. Good building designs and urban planning provide effective measures to reduce heat stress in cities. However, we have to also pay attention to the present building stock under climate change and a higher heat-wave risk. The extended German HHWS provide information for the emergency services to support the social assistants during heat waves.

In this paper, we present a frame synchronization method which consists of the non-orthogonal superposition of a synchronization sequence and the data. We derive the optimum detection criterion and compare it to the classical sequential concatenation of synchronization and data sequences. Computer simulations confirm the benefits of the non-orthogonal allocation for the case of short frames, which makes this technique particularly suited for the increasingly important regime of low latency and ultra- reliable communication.
The high peak power in comparison to the average transmit power is one of the major long-standing problems in multicarrier modulation and is known as the PAPR (peak to average power ratio) problem. Many PAPR reduction methods have been devised and their comparison is usually based on the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of the PAPR. While this comparison is straightforward and easy to compute, its relationship with system performance metrics like the (uncoded) BER or the word error rate (WER) for coded systems is considerably more involved. We evaluate the impact of the PAPR on performance metrics like uncoded BER, EVM (error vector magnitude), mutual information and the WER for soft decoding. In this context, we find that system performance is not necessarily degraded by an increasing PAPR. We show that a high number of subcarriers, despite the corresponding high PAPR, is actually not a problem for the system performance and provide a simple explanation for this seemingly counter-intuitive fact.
We describe a prototype for power line communi- cation for grid monitoring. The PLC receiver is used to gain information about the PLC channel and the current state of the power grid. The PLC receiver uses the communication signal to obtain an accurate estimate of the current channel and provides information which can be used as a basis for further processing with the aim to detect partial discharges and other anomalies in the grid. This monitoring of the power grid takes advantage of existing PLC infrastructure and uses the data signals, which are transmitted anyway to obtain a real-time measurement of the channel transfer function and the received noise signal. Since this signal is sampled at a high sampling rate compared to simpler measurement sensors, it contains valuable information about possible degradations in the grid which need to be addressed. While channel measurements are based on a received PLC signal, information about partial discharges or other sources of interference can be gathered by a PLC receiver in the absence of a transmit signal. A prototype based on Software Defined Radio has been developed, which implements the simultaneous communication and sensing for a power grid.
In this paper, we establish a simple model for the exchange of messages in a vehicular network and we consider fundamental limits on the achievable data rate. For a vehicular network, the exchange of data with other nearby vehicles is particularly important for traffic safety, e.g. for collision avoidance, but also for cooperative applications like platooning. These use cases are currently addressed by standards building on IEEE 802.11p, namely ITS-G5 and DSRC (dedicated short range communication), which encounter saturation problems at high vehicle densities. For this reason, we take a step back and ask for the fundamental limits for the common data rate in a vehicular network. After defining a simple single-lane model and the corresponding capacity limits for some basic multiple- access schemes, we present results for a more realistic setting. For both scenarios, non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) yields the best results.
The aim of this study was to develop a biomechanically validated finite element model to predict the biomechanical behaviour of the human lumbar spine in compression.
For validation of the finite element model, an in vitro study was performed: Twelve human lumbar cadaveric spinal segments (six segments L2/3 and six segments L4/5) were loaded in axial compression using 600 N in the intact state and following surgical treatment using two different internal stabilisation devices. Range of motion was measured and used to calculate stiffness.
A finite element model of a human spinal segment L3/4 was loaded with the same force in intact and surgically altered state, corresponding to the situation of biomechanical in vitro study.
The results of the cadaver biomechanical and finite element analysis were compared. As they were close together, the finite element model was used to predict: (1) load-sharing within human lumbar spine in compression, (2) load-sharing within osteoporotic human lumbar spine in compression and (3) the stabilising potential of the different spinal implants with respect to bone mineral density.
A finite element model as described here may be used to predict the biomechanical behaviour of the spine. Moreover, the influence of different spinal stabilisation systems may be predicted.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) can potentially transform many aspects of modern society in various ways, including automation of tasks, personalization of products and services, diagnosis of diseases and their treatment, transportation, safety, and security in public spaces, etc. Recently, AI technology has been transforming the financial industry, offering new ways to analyse data and automate processes, reduce costs, increase efficiency, and provide more personalized services to customers. However, it also raised important ethical and regulatory questions that need to be addressed by the industry and society as a whole. The aim of the Erasmus+ project Transversal Skills in Applied Artificial Intelligence - TSAAI (KA220-HED - Cooperation Partnerships in higher education) has been to establish a training platform that will incorporate teaching guidelines based on a curriculum covering different areas of application of AI technology. In this work, we will focus on applying AI models in the financial and insurance sectors.
The Bluetooth community is in the process to develop mesh technology. This is highly promising as Bluetooth is widely available in Smart Phones and Tablet PCs, allowing an easy access to the Internet of Things. In this paper work, we investigate the performance of Bluetooth enabled mesh networking that we performed to identify the strengths and weaknesses. A demonstrator for this protocol has been implemented by using the Fruity Mesh protocol implementation. Extensive test cases have been executed to measure the performance, the reliability, the power consumption and the delay. For this, an Automated Physical Testbed (APTB), which emulates the physical channels has been used. The results of these measurements are considered useful for the real implementation of Bluetooth; not only for home and building automation, but also for industrial automation.
A laser-operated, angle-tunable transducer was employed to excite selectively elastic waves guided along the apex of a solid wedge. The propagation of wedge waves at anisotropic monocrystalline silicon edges with different symmetry properties was studied by optical detection. The reduced symmetry in crystals, as compared to isotropic media, causes a number of new features, such as the existence of supersonic leaky wedge waves, tilted spatial pulse profiles, and other peculiarities of their localization. Experimental and theoretical results are presented for three different types of symmetry configurations: the wedge symmetric about its midplane, the wedge symmetric about the plane normal to its apex line, and the wedge symmetric about one of its faces. The experiments include accurate measurements of the phase velocity and the wave field distribution, providing information on localization and coupling of wedge waves with other waves. Theoretically, the wedge waves were treated by the Laguerre function method, extended to modes that are not localized at the tip of the wedge. This approach allowed an accurate description of the observed localized and leaky wedge waves in anisotropic wedges.
Nonlinear acoustic waves are considered that have displacements localized at the tip of an elastic wedge. The evolution equation governing their propagation is discussed and compared with its analogues pertaining to nonlinear acoustic surface and bulk waves. Solitary wave solutions of the evolution equation have been determined numerically for the cases of two rectangular edges which may be viewed as generated by splitting a half-space, consisting of crystalline silicon, into two quarter-spaces. For these two geometries, the kernel in the nonlinear terms of the evolution equation has been calculated from the second-order and third-order elastic constants of silicon, and weak dispersion due to tip truncation has been considered. Solitary pulse shapes have been computed and collisions of solitary pulses have been simulated for various relative speeds of the two collision partners. Collision scenarios for the two wedge geometries were found to differ considerably. Special attention is paid to the peculiar interaction of two initially identical solitary pulses.
Surface acoustic waves are propagated toward the edge of an anisotropic elastic medium (a silicon crystal), which supports leaky waves with a high degree of localization at the tip of the edge. At an angle of incidence corresponding to phase matching with this leaky wedge wave, a sharp peak in the reflection coefficient of the surface wave was found. This anomalous reflection is associated with efficient excitation of the leaky wedge wave. In laser ultrasound experiments, surface acoustic wave pulses were excited and their reflection from the edge of the sample and their partial conversion into leaky wedge wave pulses was observed by optical probe-beam deflection. The reflection scenario and the pulse shapes of the surface and wedge-localized guided waves, including the evolution of the acoustic pulse traveling along the edge, have been confirmed in detail by numerical simulations.
Among the various types of guided acoustic waves, acoustic wedge waves are non-diffractive and non-dispersive. Both properties make them susceptible to nonlinear effects. Investigations have recently been focused on effects of second-order nonlinearity in connection with anisotropy. The current status of these investigations is reviewed in the context of earlier work on nonlinear properties of two-dimensional guided acoustic waves, in particular surface waves. The role of weak dispersion, leading to solitary waves, is also discussed. For anti-symmetric flexural wedge waves propagating in isotropic media or in anisotropic media with reflection symmetry with respect to the wedge’s mid-plane, an evolution equation is derived that accounts for an effective third-order nonlinearity of acoustic wedge waves. For the kernel functions occurring in the nonlinear terms of this equation, expressions in terms of overlap integrals with Laguerre functions are provided, which allow for their quantitative numerical evaluation. First numerical results for the efficiency of third-harmonic generation of flexural wedge waves are presented.
In numerical calculations, guided acoustic waves, localized in two spatial dimensions, have been shown to exist and their properties have been investigated in three different geometries, (i) a half-space consisting of two elastic media with a planar interface inclined to the common surface, (ii) a wedge made of two elastic media with a planar interface, and (iii) the free edge of an elastic layer between two quarter-spaces or two wedge-shaped pieces of a material with elastic properties and density differing from those of the intermediate layer.
For the special case of Poisson media forming systems (i) and (ii), the existence ranges of these 1D guided waves in parameter space have been determined and found to strongly depend on the inclination angle between surface and interface in case (i) and the wedge angle in case (ii). In a system of type (ii) made of two materials with strong acoustic mismatch and in systems of type (iii), leaky waves have been found with a high degree of spatial localization of the associated displacements, although the two materials constituting these structures are isotropic.
Both the fully guided and the leaky waves analyzed in this work could find applications in non-destructive evaluation of composite structures and should be accounted for in geophysical prospecting, for example.
A critical comparison is presented of the two computational approaches employed, namely a semi-analytical finite element scheme and a method based on an expansion of the displacement field in a double series of special functions.
Propagation of acoustic waves is considered in a system consisting of two stiff quarter-spaces connected by a planar soft layer. The two quarter-spaces and the layer form a half-space with a planar surface. In a numerical study, surface waves have been found and analyzed in this system with displacements that are localized not only at the surface, but also in the soft layer. In addition to the semi-analytical finite element method, an alternative approach based on an expansion of the displacement field in a double series of Laguerre functions and Legendre polynomials has been applied.
It is shown that a number of branches of the mode spectrum can be interpreted and remarkably well described by perturbation theory, where the zero-order modes are the wedge waves guided at a rectangular edge of the stiff quarter-spaces or waves guided at the edge of a soft plate with rigid surfaces.
For elastic moduli and densities corresponding to the material combination PMMA–silicone–PMMA, at least one of the branches in the dispersion relation of surface waves trapped in the soft layer exhibits a zero-group velocity point.
Potential applications of these 1D guided surface waves in non-destructive evaluation are discussed.
DEM–FEA estimation of pores arrangement effect on the compressive Young’s modulus for Mg foams
(2015)
This work reports the study of the effect of the pore arrangement on the compressive behavior of Mg foams with regular pore size and porosities ranging from 25% to 45%. Pore arrangements were modeled using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), with random and ordered models, and compared to the estimations obtained for a previous work. The coordinates of the random pore arrangements were firstly generated using Discrete Element Method (DEM), and used in a second stage for modeling the pores by FEA. Estimations were also compared to the experimental results for Mg foams obtained by means of powder metallurgy. Results show important drops in the Young’s moduli as the porosity increases for both, experimental results and FEA estimations. Estimations obtained using ordered pore arrangements presented significant differences when compared to the estimations acquired from models with random arrangements. The randomly arranged models represent more accurately the real topologies of the experimental metallic foams. The Young’s moduli estimated using these models were in excellent agreement with the experiments, whilst the estimations obtained using ordered models presented relative errors significantly higher. The importance of the use of more realistic FEA models for improving the predicting ability of this method was probed, for the study of the mechanical properties of metallic foams.
Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) is a widespread additive manufacturing technology, mostly in the field of printable polymers. The use of filaments filled with metal particles for the manufacture of metallic parts by FFF presents specific challenges regarding debinding and sintering. For aluminium and its alloys, the sintering temperature range overlaps with the temperature range of thermal decomposition of many commonly used “backbone” polymers, which provide stability to the green parts. Moreover, the high oxygen affinity of aluminium necessitates the use of special sintering regimes and alloying strategies. Therefore, it is challenging to achieve both low porosity and low levels of oxygen and carbon impurities at the same time. Feedstocks compatible with the special requirements of aluminium alloys were developed. We present results on the investigation of debinding/sintering regimes by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) based In-Situ Process Gas Analysis and discuss optimized thermal treatment strategies for Al-based FFF.
Biodegradable metals have entered the implant market in recent years, but still do not show fully satisfactory degradation behaviour and mechanical properties. In contrast, it has been shown that pure molybdenum has an excellent combination of the required properties in this respect. We report on PM based screen printing of thin-walled molybdenum tubes as a processing step for medical stent manufacture. We also present data on the in vivo degradation and biocompatibility of molybdenum. The degradation of molybdenum wires implanted in the aorta of rats was evaluated by SEM and EDX. Biocompatibility was assessed by histological investigation of organs and analysis of molybdenum levels in tissue extracts and body fluids. Degradation rates of up to 13.5 μm/y were observed after 12 months. No histological changes or elevated molybdenum levels in organ tissues were observed. In summary, the results further underline that molybdenum is a highly promising biodegradable metallic material.
Encapsulant-free N.I.C.E. modules have strong ecological advantages compared to conventional laminated modules but suffer generally from lower electrical performance. Via long-term outdoor monitoring of fullsize industrial modules of both types with identical solar cells, we investigated if the performance difference remains constant over time and which parameters influence its value. After assessing about a full year’s data, two obvious levers for N.I.C.E. optimization are identified: The usage of textured glass and transparent adhesives on the module rear side. Also, the performance loss could be alleviated using tracking systems due to lower AOI values. Our measurements show additionally that N.I.C.E. module surfaces are in average about 2.5°C cooler compared to laminated modules. With these findings, we lay out a roadmap to reduce today’s LIV gap of about 5%rel by different optimizations.
There are some existing Java benchmarks, application benchmarks as well as micro benchmarks or mixture both of them, such as: Java Grande, Spec98, CaffeMark, HBech, etc. But none of them deal with behaviors of multi tasks operating systems. As a result, the achieved outputs are not satisfied for performance evaluation engineers. Behaviors of multi tasks operating systems are based on a schedule management which is employed in these systems. Different processes can have different priority to share the same resources. The time is measured by estimating from applications started to it is finished does not reflect the real time value which the system need for running those programs. New approach to this problem should be done. Having said that, in this paper we present a new Java benchmark, named FHOJ benchmark, which directly deals with multi tasks behaviors of a system. Our study shows that in some cases, results from FHOJ benchmark are far more reliable in comparison with some existing Java benchmarks.
Lithium-ion batteries exhibit a well-known trade-off between energy and power, which is problematic for electric vehicles which require both high energy during discharge (high driving range) and high power during charge (fast-charge capability). We use two commercial lithium-ion cells (high-energy [HE] and high-power) to parameterize and validate physicochemical pseudo-two-dimensional models. In a systematic virtual design study, we vary electrode thicknesses, cell temperature, and the type of charging protocol. We are able to show that low anode potentials during charge, inducing lithium plating and cell aging, can be effectively avoided either by using high temperatures or by using a constant-current/constant-potential/constant-voltage charge protocol which includes a constant anode potential phase. We introduce and quantify a specific charging power as the ratio of discharged energy (at slow discharge) and required charging time (at a fast charge). This value is shown to exhibit a distinct optimum with respect to electrode thickness. At 35°C, the optimum was achieved using an HE electrode design, yielding 23.8 Wh/(min L) volumetric charging power at 15.2 min charging time (10% to 80% state of charge) and 517 Wh/L discharge energy density. By analyzing the various overpotential contributions, we were able to show that electrolyte transport losses are dominantly responsible for the insufficient charge and discharge performance of cells with very thick electrodes.
Most machine learning methods require careful selection of hyper-parameters in order to train a high performing model with good generalization abilities. Hence, several automatic selection algorithms have been introduced to overcome tedious manual (try and error) tuning of these parameters. Due to its very high sample efficiency, Bayesian Optimization over a Gaussian Processes modeling of the parameter space has become the method of choice. Unfortunately, this approach suffers from a cubic compute complexity due to underlying Cholesky factorization, which makes it very hard to be scaled beyond a small number of sampling steps. In this paper, we present a novel, highly accurate approximation of the underlying Gaussian Process. Reducing its computational complexity from cubic to quadratic allows an efficient strong scaling of Bayesian Optimization while outperforming the previous approach regarding optimization accuracy. First experiments show speedups of a factor of 162 in single node and further speed up by a factor of 5 in a parallel environment.
Objective: To quantify the effect of inhaled 5% carbon-dioxide/95% oxygen on EEG recordings from patients in non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE).
Methods: Five children of mixed aetiology in NCSE were given high flow of inhaled carbogen (5% carbon dioxide/95% oxygen) using a face mask for maximum 120s. EEG was recorded concurrently in all patients. The effects of inhaled carbogen on patient EEG recordings were investigated using band-power, functional connectivity and graph theory measures. Carbogen effect was quantified by measuring effect size (Cohen's d) between "before", "during" and "after" carbogen delivery states.
Results: Carbogen's apparent effect on EEG band-power and network metrics across all patients for "before-during" and "before-after" inhalation comparisons was inconsistent across the five patients.
Conclusion: The changes in different measures suggest a potentially non-homogeneous effect of carbogen on the patients' EEG. Different aetiology and duration of the inhalation may underlie these non-homogeneous effects. Tuning the carbogen parameters (such as ratio between CO2 and O2, duration of inhalation) on a personalised basis may improve seizure suppression in future.

A printed electronics technology has the advantage of additive and extremely low-cost fabrication compared with the conventional silicon technology. Specifically, printed electrolyte-gated field-effect transistors (EGFETs) are attractive for low-cost applications in the Internet-of-Things domain as they can operate at low supply voltages. In this paper, we propose an empirical dc model for EGFETs, which can describe the behavior of the EGFETs smoothly and accurately over all regimes. The proposed model, built by extending the Enz-Krummenacher-Vittoz model, can also be used to model process variations, which was not possible previously due to fixed parameters for near threshold regime. It offers a single model for all the operating regions of the transistors with only one equation for the drain current. Additionally, it models the transistors with a less number of parameters but higher accuracy compared with existing techniques. Measurement results from several fabricated EGFETs confirm that the proposed model can predict the I-V more accurately compared with the state-of-the-art models in all operating regions. Additionally, the measurements on the frequency of a fabricated ring oscillator are only 4.7% different from the simulation results based on the proposed model using values for the switching capacitances extracted from measurement data, which shows more than 2× improvement compared with the state-of-the-art model.
Printed Electronics technology is a key-enabler for smart sensors, soft robotics, and wearables. The inkjet printed electrolyte-gated field effect transistor (EGFET) technology is a promising candidate for such applications due to its low-power operation, high field-effect mobility, and on-demand fabrication. Unlike conventional silicon-based technologies, inkjet printed electronics technology is an additive manufacturing process where multiple layers are printed on top of each other to realize functional devices such as transistors and their interconnections. Due to the additive manufacturing process, the technology has limited routing layers. For routing of complex circuits, insulating crossovers are printed at the intersection of routing paths to isolate them. The crossover can alter the electrical properties of a circuit based on specific location on a routing path. In this work, we propose a crossover-aware placement and routing (COPnR) methodology for inkjet-printed circuits by integrating the crossover constraints in our design framework. Our proposed placement methodology is based on a state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithm while the routing optimization is done using a genetic algorithm. The proposed methodology is compared with the industrial standard placement and routing (PnR) tools. On average, the proposed methodology has 38% fewer crossovers and 94% fewer failing paths compared to the industrial PnR tools applied to printed circuit designs.
Printed Electronics is perceived to have a major impact in the fields of smart sensors, Internet of Things and wearables. Especially low power printed technologies such as electrolyte gated field effect transistors (EGFETs) using solution-processed inorganic materials and inkjet printing are very promising in such application domains. In this paper, we discuss a modeling approach to describe the variations of printed devices. Incorporating these models and design flows into our previously developed printed design system allows for robust circuit design. Additionally, we propose a reliability-aware routing solution for printed electronics technology based on the technology constraints in printing crossovers. The proposed methodology was validated on multiple benchmark circuits and can be easily integrated with the design automation tools-set.

The paper describes the methodology and experimental results for revealing similarities in thermal dependencies of biases of accelerometers and gyroscopes from 250 inertial MEMS chips (MPU-9250). Temperature profiles were measured on an experimental setup with a Peltier element for temperature control. Classification of temperature curves was carried out with machine learning approach.
A perfect sensor should not have thermal dependency at all. Thus, only sensors inside the clusters with smaller dependency (smaller total temperature slopes) might be pre-selected for production of high accuracy inertial navigation modules. It was found that no unified thermal profile (“family” curve) exists for all sensors in a production batch. However, obviously, sensors might be grouped according to their parameters. Therefore, the temperature compensation profiles might be regressed for each group. 12 slope coefficients on 5 degrees temperature intervals from 0°C to +60°C were used as the features for the k-means++ clustering algorithm.
The minimum number of clusters for all sensors to be well separated from each other by bias thermal profiles in our case is 6. It was found by applying the elbow method. For each cluster a regression curve can be obtained.

This paper gives an overview of the implementation of an Active Noise Control system on the TMS320C6713 Digital Signal Processor from Texas Instruments in the Digital Signal Processing Lab at Hochschule Offenburg, Germany. This system is implemented considering some non-ideal environmental conditions on a real system instead of being limited to computer simulations. Changes over time on the physical acoustical path as well as reverberation and variation on the power of the reference signal can strongly degrade the performance of the system or even lead to instability. In order to try to minimize these effects, the Active Noise Control system was designed to support a fast and easy implementation and evaluation of different algorithms on the DSP in real-time. In Section 1 a brief introduction about active noise control system is given and in section 2 the basic algorithm is described. In section 3 the implementation of the system is described and in section 4 some final considerations are given.
In this paper, the influence of the material hardening behavior on plasticity-induced fatigue crack closure is investigated for strain-controlled loading and fully plastic, large-scale yielding conditions by means of the finite element method. The strain amplitude and the strain ratio are varied for given Ramberg–Osgood material properties representing materials with different hardening behavior. The results show a pronounced influence of the hardening behavior on crack closure, while no significant effect is found from the considered strain amplitude and strain ratio. The effect of the hardening behavior on the crack opening stress cannot be described by existing crack opening stress equations.

Adsorption of N2 and CO2 on Activated Carbon, AlO(OH) Nanoparticles, and AlO(OH) Hollow Spheres
(2015)
Adsorption behaviors of nitrogen and CO2 on Norit R1 Extra and AlO(OH) nanoparticles and hollow spheres were measured under different temperature and pressure conditions using a magnetic suspension balance. Independent from the substrate investigated, all isotherms increase at lower pressure, reach a maximum, and then decrease with increasing pressure. In addition, selected experimental data were correlated with different model approaches and compared with reliable literature data. In case of CO2 on AlO(OH), capillary condensation was observed at two defined temperatures. The results suggest that the conversion of the liquid into a supercritical adsorbate phase does not take place suddenly.

To develop a strategy how to introduce these devices to the market based on user needs is the objective of our research. The contribution of this paper is three-fold: we will provide an overview of the current options of particulate matter pollution solutions (I). Finally, a representative empirical study via social media channels with German car owners will help to develop a strategy to introduce retrofit devices into the German market (III).
A car is only useful, when it runs properly – but keeping a car it running is getting more and more complex. Car service providers need a deep knowledge about technical details of the different car models. On the other hand car producers try to keep this information in their ownership. Digital data collection takes place every second on the car´s product life cycle and is stored on the car producers´ servers. The contribution of this paper is three-fold: we will provide an overview of the current concepts of intelligent order assistant technologies (I). This corpus is used to come to a more precise description of the specific service performance aspects (II). Finally, a representative empirical study with German motor mechanics will help to evaluate the wishes and needs regarding an intelligent order assistant in the garage (III).
Components of rocket engines as actively cooled combustion chambers must withstand high pressure as well as severe and complex thermal transients. While the thermal transients result in temperature gradients and, thus, in constraint thermal strains, the pressure load induces mean stresses. To assess the mechanical behaviour of such components during design via finite-element calculations, constitutive models are necessary that describe the time- and temperature-dependent plasticity of the material appropriately.
Advanced models account for viscoplastic deformations including isotropic and kinematic hardening, recovery and ratcheting. However, the models contain a relatively large number of temperature-dependent material properties that must be determined on the basis of data of material tests. The determination of the properties is a non-trivial task because it is not clear which loading history must be applied in the tests for a certain material to obtain stable and robust (i.e. objective) material properties. Consequently, the determined properties are depending on the underlying loading history in the tests as well as on the experience and valuation of the person that determined the properties. This results in uncertainties during the assessment of the components that must be faced with conservative designs leading to negative consequences in terms of mass and costs.
It is the aim of this work funded by the European Space Agency ESA to derive a procedure to determine stable and robust material properties of an advanced viscoplastic constitutive model for aerospace materials. To this end, a special loading history is applied in isothermal material tests conducted with copper at different temperatures in the temperature range from 300 to 700 K. To determine the material properties and to assess stability and robustness methods for numerical optimization as well as analytical and statistical methods are used. The determined material properties are validated on the basis of results of thermomechanical material tests also conducted in the temperature range from 300 to 700 K.

Background
Internal tibial loading is influenced by modifiable factors with implications for the risk of stress injury. Runners encounter varied surface steepness (gradients) when running outdoors and may adapt their speed according to the gradient. This study aimed to quantify tibial bending moments and stress at the anterior and posterior peripheries when running at different speeds on surfaces of different gradients.
Methods
Twenty recreational runners ran on a treadmill at 3 different speeds (2.5 m/s, 3.0 m/s, and 3.5 m/s) and gradients (level: 0%; uphill: +5%, +10%, and +15%; downhill: –5%, –10%, and –15%). Force and marker data were collected synchronously throughout. Bending moments were estimated at the distal third centroid of the tibia about the medial–lateral axis by ensuring static equilibrium at each 1% of stance. Stress was derived from bending moments at the anterior and posterior peripheries by modeling the tibia as a hollow ellipse. Two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance were conducted using both functional and discrete statistical analyses.
Results
There were significant main effects for running speed and gradient on peak bending moments and peak anterior and posterior stress. Higher running speeds resulted in greater tibial loading. Running uphill at +10% and +15% resulted in greater tibial loading than level running. Running downhill at –10% and –15% resulted in reduced tibial loading compared to level running. There was no difference between +5% or –5% and level running.
Conclusion
Running at faster speeds and uphill on gradients ≥+10% increased internal tibial loading, whereas slower running and downhill running on gradients ≥–10% reduced internal loading. Adapting running speed according to the gradient could be a protective mechanism, providing runners with a strategy to minimize the risk of tibial stress injuries.
In-vivo and in-vitro comparison of implant-based CRT optimization - What provide new algorithms?
(2011)
Introduction: In cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), individual AV delay (AVD) optimization can effectively increase hemodynamics and reduce non-responder rate. Accurate, automatic and easily comprehensible algorithms for the follow-up are desirable. QuickOpt is the first attempt of a semi-automatic intracardiac electrogram (IEGM) based AVD algorithm. We aimed to compare its accuracy and usefulness by in-vitro and in-vivo studies.
Methods: Using the programmable ARSI-4 four-chamber heart rhythm and IEGM simulator (HKP, Germany), the QuickOpt feature of an Epic HF system (St. Jude, USA) was tested in-vitro by simulated atrial IEGM amplitudes between 0.3 and 3.5mV during both, manual and automatic atrial sensing between 0.2 and 1.0mV. Subsequently, in 21 heart failure patients with implanted biventricular defibrillators, QuickOpt was performed in-vivo. Results of the algorithm for VDD and DDD stimulation were compared with echo AV delay optimization.
Results: In-vitro simulations demonstrated a QuickOpt measuring accuracy of ± 8ms. Depending on atrial IEGM amplitude, the algorithm proposed optimal AVD between 90 and 150ms for VDD and between 140 and 200ms for DDD operation, respectively. In-vivo, QuickOpt difference between individual AVD in DDD and VDD mode was either 50ms (20pts) or 40ms (1pt). QuickOpt and echo AVD differed by 41 ± 25ms (7 – 90ms) in VDD and by 18 ± 24ms (17-50ms) in DDD operation. Individual echo AVD difference between both modes was 73 ± 20ms (30-100ms).
Conclusion: The study demonstrates the value of in-vitro studies. It predicted QuickOpt deficiencies regarding IEGM amplitude dependent AVD proposals constrained to fixed individual differences between DDD and VDD mode. Consequently, in-vivo, the algorithm provided AVD of predominantly longer duration than echo in both modes. Accepting echo individualization as gold standard, QuickOpt should not be used alone to optimize AVD in CRT patients.
Chronic insomnia is defined by difficulties in falling asleep, maintaining sleep, and early morning awakening, and is coupled with daytime consequences such as fatigue, attention deficits, and mood instability. These symptoms persist over a period of at least 3 months (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5 criteria). Chronic insomnia can be a symptom of many medical, neurological, and mental disorders. As a disorder, it incurs substantial health-care and occupational costs, and poses substantial risks for the development of cardiovascular and mental disorders, including cognitive deficits. Family and twin studies confirm that chronic insomnia can have a genetic component (heritability coefficients between 42% and 57%), whereas the investigation of autonomous and central nervous system parameters has identified hyperarousal as a final common pathway of the pathophysiology, implicating an imbalance of sleep–wake regulation consisting of either overactivity of the arousal systems, hypoactivity of the sleep-inducing systems, or both. Insomnia treatments include benzodiazepines, benzodiazepine-receptor agonists, and cognitive behavioural therapy. Treatments currently under investigation include transcranial magnetic or electrical brain stimulation, and novel methods to deliver psychological interventions.

One of the most important questions about smart metering systems for the end users is their data privacy and security. Indeed, smart metering systems provide a lot of advantages for distribution system operators (DSO), but functionalities offered to users of existing smart meters are still limited and society is becoming increasingly critical. Smart metering systems are accused of interfering with personal rights and privacy, providing unclear tariff regulations which not sufficiently encourage households to manage their electricity consumption in advance. In the specific field of smart grids, data security appears to be a necessary condition for consumer confidence without which they will not be able to give their consent to the collection and use of personal data concerning them.
