Abstract: Impact of running speed and slope on instantaneous and average vertical loading rates
(2022)
The majority of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in team sports are non-contact injuries, with cutting maneuvers identified as high-risk tasks. Young female handball players have been shown to be at greater risk for ACL injuries than males. One risk factor for ACL injuries is the magnitude of the knee abduction moment (KAM). Cutting technique variables on foot placement, overall approach and knee kinematics have been shown to influence the KAM. Since injury risk is believed to increase with increasing task complexity, the purpose of the study was to test the effect of task complexity on technique variables that influence the KAM in female handball players during fake-and-cut tasks.
TRIZ Inventive Principles
(2022)
The analysis of several thousand patents led to the conclusion that inventive engineering problems and technical contradictions in all kinds of industrial sectors could be solved by a limited number of basic Inventive Principles (Altshuller, 1984). The modern Theory of Inventive Problem Solving TRIZ (VDI 4521) contains 40 basic Inventive Principles (IP). These principles are simple to use or modify and can be easily integrated in brainstorming or daily engineer’s work. One established part of industrial practice is the composition of the specific groups of principles for solving different kinds of problems (Livotov, Petrov, 2011). Based on interdisciplinary experience of TRIZ application in the industrial companies in the last 25 years the a general order in the application of 40 Inventive Principles can be recommended for idea generation and problem solving (Livotov, Chandra, Mas'udah et al, 2019). This brochure presents an update of the 40 Inventive Principles extending the original version (Altshuller, 1984) with additional 70 sub-principles, resulting in the advanced set of 160 sub-principles, regarded as elementary inventive operators. These extended version of inventive principles finds its application in the AIDA Automatic IDEA & IP Generator https://www.tris-europe.com/eng/software/innovationssoftware.htm
With recent developments in the Ukrainian-Russian conflict, many are discussing about Germany’s dependency on fossil fuel imports in its energy system, and how can the country proceed with reducing that dependency. With its wide-ranging consumption sectors, the electricity sector comes as the perfect choice to start with. Recent reports showed that the German federal government is already intending to have a fully renewable electricity by 2035 while exploiting all possible clean power options. This was published in the federal government’s climate emergency program (Easter Package) in early 2022. The aim of this package is to initiate a rapid transition and decarbonization of the electricity sector. The Easter Package expects an enormous growth of renewable energies to a completely new level, with already at least 80% renewable gross energy consumption, with extensive and broad deployment of different generation technologies on various scales. This paper will discuss this ambitious plan and outline some insights into this huge and rapidly increasing step, and show how much will Germany need in order to achieve this huge milestone towards a fully green supply of the electricity sector. Different scenarios and shares of renewables will be investigated in order to elaborate on preponed climate-neutral goal of the electricity sector by 2035. The results pointed out some promising aspects in achieving a 100% renewable power, with massive investments in both generation and storage technologies.
Running shoes were categorized either as motion control, cushioned, or minimal footwear in the past. Today, these categories blur and are not as clearly defined. Moreover, with the advances in manufacturing processes, it is possible to create individualized running shoes that incorporate features that meet individual biomechanical and experiential needs. However, specific ways to individualize footwear to reduce individual injury risk are poorly understood. Therefore, the purpose of this scoping review was to provide an overview of (1) footwear design features that have the potential for individualization; (2) human biomechanical variability as a theoretical foundation for individualization; (3) the literature on the differential responses to footwear design features between selected groups of individuals. These purposes focus exclusively on reducing running-related risk factors for overuse injuries. We included studies in the English language on adults that analyzed: (1) potential interaction effects between footwear design features and subgroups of runners or covariates (e.g., age, gender) for running-related biomechanical risk factors or injury incidences; (2) footwear perception for a systematically modified footwear design feature. Most of the included articles (n = 107) analyzed male runners. Several footwear design features (e.g., midsole characteristics, upper, outsole profile) show potential for individualization. However, the overall body of literature addressing individualized footwear solutions and the potential to reduce biomechanical risk factors is limited. Future studies should leverage more extensive data collections considering relevant covariates and subgroups while systematically modifying isolated footwear design features to inform footwear individualization.
Modelbasierte Zustandsschätzung elektrischer Betriebsmittel der Mittel- und Niederspannungsebenen
(2022)
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the RoboCup WorldCup 2021 was held completely remotely. For this competition the Webots simulator (https://cyberbotics.com/) was used, so all teams needed to transfer their robot to the simulation. This paper describes our experiences during this process as well as a genetic learning approach to improve our walk engine to allow a more stable and faster movement in the simulation. Therefore we used a docker setup to scale easily. The resulting movement was one of the outstanding features that finally led to the championship title.
This review provides an overview on the production and analysis techniques of antioxidative peptides from food proteins. Regarding the production of antioxidative peptides, interlinked factors must be considered. Depending on the protein substrate, different peptidases or peptidase systems containing multiple enzymes as well as a specific production process must be chosen. The antioxidative peptides might be produced in a batch process including multiple pre- and post-treatments, besides the hydrolyses with peptidases itself. As an alternative, the potential of continuous production systems is discussed in this review. Furthermore, robust analyses tools are needed to gain control of the process and final product properties. With no standardized methodology available for antioxidative peptide evaluation, pros and cons of various strategies for peptide separation and antioxidative measurement are discussed in this review. Therefore, this review provides a roadmap for antioxidative peptide generation from various sources for research and development as well as for potential industrial use.
In the literature, many studies have described the 3D printing of ceramic-based scaffolds (e.g., printing with calcium phosphate cement) in the form of linear structures with layer rotations of 90°, although no right angles can be found in the human body. Therefore, this work focuses on the adaptation of biological shapes, including a layer rotation of only 1°. Sample shapes were printed with calcium phosphate cement using a 3D Bioplotter from EnvisionTec. Both straight and wavy spokes were printed in a round structure with 12 layers. Depending on the strand diameter (200 and 250 µm needle inner diameter) and strand arrangement, maximum failure loads of 444.86 ± 169.39 N for samples without subsequent setting in PBS up to 1280.88 ± 538.66 N after setting in PBS could be achieved.
In this paper, a temperature-dependent viscoplasticity model is presented that describes thermal and cyclic softening of the hot work steel X38CrMoV5-3 under thermomechanical fatigue loading. The model describes the softening state of the material by evolution equations, the material properties of which can be determined on the basis of a defined experimental program. A kinetic model is employed to capture the effect of coarsening carbides and a new isotropic cyclic softening model is developed that takes history effects during thermomechanical loadings into account. The temperature-dependent material properties of the viscoplasticity model are determined on the basis of experimental data measured in isothermal and thermomechanical fatigue tests for the material X38CrMoV5-3 in the temperature range between 20 and 650 °C. The comparison of the model and an existing model for isotropic softening shows an improved description of the softening behavior under thermomechanical fatigue loading. A good overall description of the experimental data is possible with the presented viscoplasticity model, so that it is suited for the assessment of operating loads of hot forging tools.
An import ban of Russian energy sources to Germany is currently being increasingly discussed. We want to support the discussion by showing a way how the electricity system in Germany can manage low energy imports in the short term and which measures are necessary to still meet the climate protection targets. In this paper, we examine the impact of a complete stop of Russian fossil fuel imports on the electricity sector in Germany, and how this will affect the climate coals of an earlier coal phase-out and climate neutrality by 2045.
Following a scenario-based analysis, the results gave a point of view on how much would be needed to completely rely on the scarce non-renewable energy resources in Germany. Huge amounts of investments would be needed in order to ensure a secure supply of electricity, in both generation energy sources (RES) and energy storage systems (ESS). The key findings are that a rapid expansion of renewables and storage technologies will significantly reduce the dependence of the German electricity system on energy imports. The huge integration of renewable energy does not entail any significant imports of the energy sources natural gas, hard coal, and mineral oil, even in the long term. The results showed that a ban on fossil fuel imports from Russia outlines huge opportunities to go beyond the German government's climate targets, where the 1.5-degree-target is achieved in the electricity system.
During the coronavirus crisis, labs had to be offered in digital form in mechanical engineering at short notice. For this purpose, digital twins of more complex test benches in the field of fluid energy machines were used in the mechanical engineering course, with which the students were able to interact remotely to obtain measurement data. The concept of the respective lab was revised with regard to its implementation as a remote laboratory. Fortunately, real-world labs were able to be fully replaced by remote labs. Student perceptions of remote labs were mostly positive. This paper explains the concept and design of the digital twins and the lab as well as the layout, procedure, and finally the results of the accompanying evaluation. However, the implementation of the digital twins to date does not yet include features that address the tactile experience of working in real-world labs.
The energy system is changing since some years in order to achieve the climate goals from the Paris Agreement which wants to prevent an increase of the global temperature above 2 °C [1]. Decarbonisation of the energy system has become for governments a big challenge and different strategies are being stablished. Germany has set greenhouse gas reduction limits for different years and keeps track of the improvement made yearly. The expansion of renewable energy systems (RES) together with decarbonisation technologies are a key factor to accomplish this objective.
This research is done to analyse the effect of introducing biochar, a decarbonisation technology, and study how it will affect the energy system. Pyrolysis is the process from which biochar is obtained and it is modelled in an open-source energy system model. A sensibility analysis is done in order to assess the effect of changing the biomass potential and the costs for pyrolysis.
The role of pyrolysis is analysed in the form of different future scenarios for the year 2045 to evaluate the impact when the CO2 emission limit is zero. All scenarios are compared to the reference scenario, where pyrolysis is not considered.
Results show that biochar can be used to compensate the emissions from other conventional power plant and achieve an energy transition with lower costs. Furthermore, it was also found that pyrolysis can also reduce the need of flexibility. This study also shows that the biomass potential and the pyrolysis costs can strongly affect the behaviour of pyrolysis in the energy system.
Eco-Feasibility Study and Application of Natural Inventive Principles in Chemical Engineering Design
(2022)
The early stages of the front-end process development are critical for the future success of projects involving new technologies. The application of eco-inventive principles identified in natural systems to the design of chemical processes and equipment allows one to find ways to mitigate or avoid secondary ecological problems such as, for example, higher consumption of raw materials or energy, generation of hazardous waste and pollution of the environment by toxic chemicals. However, before implementing a new technology in a real operational environment, it is necessary to completely investigate its undesirable ecological impact and to evaluate the future viability of this technology. Therefore, the research paper presents a study of ecological feasibility of an innovative process design utilising natural eco-inventive principles and analyses the correlations between applied inventive principles. Such eco-feasibility study can be considered as an important decision gate to determine whether the technology implementation should be moved forward. Furthermore, the study evaluates the practicability of natural inventive principles to the eco-friendly process design and is illustrated with an example of a sustainable technology for nickel extraction from pyrophyllite.
Rising societies’ demands require more sustainable products and technologies. Although numerous methods and tools have been developed in the last decades to support environmental-friendly product and process development, an interdisciplinary knowledge base of eco-innovative examples linked to the eco-innovative problems and solution principles is lacking. The paper proposes an ontology of examples for eco-friendly products and technologies assigned to the Inventive Principles (IPs) of the TRIZ methodology in accordance with the German TRIZ Standard VDI 4521. The examples of sustainable technologies and products build a database for sharing and reusing eco-innovation knowledge. The ontology acts as a tool for systematic solving of specific environmental problems in typical life cycle phases, for different environmental impact categories and engineering domains. Finally, the paper defines a future research agenda in the field of the TRIZ-based systematic eco-innovation.
Acoustic waves are investigated which are guided at the edge (apex line) of a wedge-shaped elastic body or at the edge of an elastic plate. The edges contain a periodic sequence of modifications, consisting either of indentations or inclusions with a different elastic material which gives rise to high acoustic mismatch. Dispersion relations are computed with the help of the finite element method. They exhibit zero-group velocity points on the dispersion branches of edge-localized acoustic modes. These special points also occur at Bloch-Floquet wavenumbers away from the Brillouin zone boundary. Deep indentations lead to flat branches corresponding to largely non-interacting, Einstein-oscillator like vibrations of the tongues between the grooves of the periodic structure. Due to the nonlinearity of the elastic media, quantified by their third-order elastic constants, an acoustic mode localized at a periodically modified edge generates a second harmonic which partly consists of surface and plate modes propagating into the elastic medium in the direction vertical to the edge. This acoustic radiation at the second-harmonic frequency is investigated for an elastic plate and a truncated sharp-angle wedge with periodic inclusions at their edges. Unlike nonlinear bulk wave generation by surface acoustic waves in an interdigital structure, surface and plate mode radiation by edge-localized modes can be visualized directly in laser-ultrasound experiments.
Research is often conducted to investigate footwear mechanical properties and their effects on running biomechanics, but little is known about their influence on runner satisfaction, or how well the shoe is perceived. A tool to predict runner satisfaction in a shoe from its mechanical properties would be advantageous for footwear companies. Data in this study were from a database (n = 615 subject-shoe pairings) of satisfaction ratings (gathered after participants ran on a treadmill), and mechanical testing data for 87 unique subjects across 61 unique shoes. Random forest and elastic net logistic regression models were built to test if footwear mechanical properties and subject characteristics could predict runner satisfaction in 3 ways: degree-of-satisfaction on a 7-point Likert scale, overall satisfaction on a 3-point Likert scale, and willingness-to-purchase the shoe (yes/no response). Data were divided into training and validation sets, using an 80–20 split, to build the models and test their accuracy, respectively. Model accuracies were compared against the no-information rate (i.e. proportion of data belonging to the largest class). The models were not able to predict degree-of-satisfaction or overall satisfaction from footwear mechanical properties but could predict runner’s willingness to purchase with 68–75% accuracy. Midsole Gmax at the heel and forefoot appeared in the top five of variable importance rankings across both willingness-to-purchase models, suggesting its role as a major factor in purchase decisions. The negative regression coefficient for both heel and forefoot Gmax indicated that softer midsoles increase the likelihood of a shoe purchase. Future models to predict satisfaction may improve accuracy with the addition of more subject-specific parameters, such as running goals or foot proportions.
Background: Running overuse injuries (ROIs) occur within a complex, partly injury-specific interplay between training loads and extrinsic and intrinsic risk factors. Biomechanical risk factors (BRFs) are related to the individual running style. While BRFs have been reviewed regarding general ROI risk, no systematic review has addressed BRFs for specific ROIs using a standardized methodology.
Objective: To identify and evaluate the evidence for the most relevant BRFs for ROIs determined during running and to
suggest future research directions.
Design: Systematic review considering prospective and retrospective studies. (PROSPERO_ID: 236,832).
Data Sources: PubMed. Connected Papers. The search was performed in February 2021.
Eligibility Criteria: English language. Studies on participants whose primary sport is running addressing the risk for the seven most common ROIs and at least one kinematic, kinetic (including pressure measurements), or electromyographic BRF. A BRF needed to be identified in at least one prospective or two independent retrospective studies. BRFs needed to be determined during running.
Results: Sixty-six articles fulfilled our eligibility criteria. Levels of evidence for specific ROIs ranged from conflicting to moderate evidence. Running populations and methods applied varied considerably between studies. While some BRFs appeared for several ROIs, most BRFs were specific for a particular ROI. Most BRFs derived from lower-extremity joint kinematics and kinetics were located in the frontal and transverse planes of motion. Further, plantar pressure, vertical ground reaction force loading rate and free moment-related parameters were identified as kinetic BRFs.
Conclusion: This study offers a comprehensive overview of BRFs for the most common ROIs, which might serve as a starting point to develop ROI-specific risk profiles of individual runners. We identified limited evidence for most ROI-specific risk factors, highlighting the need for performing further high-quality studies in the future. However, consensus on data collection standards (including the quantification of workload and stress tolerance variables and the reporting of injuries) is warranted.
Background: Many countries have restricted public life in order to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV2). As a side effect of related measures, physical activity (PA) levels may have decreased.
Objective: We aimed (1) to quantify changes in PA and (2) to identify variables potentially predicting PA reductions.
Methods: A systematic review with random-effects multilevel meta-analysis was performed, pooling the standardized mean differences in PA measures before and during public life restrictions.
Results: A total of 173 trials with moderate methodological quality (modified Downs and Black checklist) were identified. Compared to pre-pandemic, total PA (SMD − 0.65, 95% CI − 1.10 to − 0.21) and walking (SMD − 0.52, 95% CI − 0.29 to − 0.76) decreased while sedentary behavior increased (SMD 0.91, 95% CI: 0.17 to 1.65). Reductions in PA affected all intensities (light: SMD − 0.35, 95% CI − 0.09 to − 0.61, p = .013; moderate: SMD − 0.33, 95% CI − 0.02 to − 0.6; vigorous: SMD − 0.33, − 0.08 to − 0.58, 95% CI − 0.08 to − 0.58) to a similar degree. Moderator analyses revealed no influence of variables such as sex, age, body mass index, or health status. However, the only continent without a PA reduction was Australia and cross-sectional trials yielded higher effect sizes (p < .05).
Conclusion: Public life restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in moderate reductions in PA levels and large increases in sedentary behavior. Health professionals and policy makers should therefore join forces to develop strategies counteracting the adverse effects of inactivity.
Effect of downhill running on biomechanical risk factors associated with iliotibial band syndrome
(2022)
The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of downhill running on biomechanical risk factors for iliotibial band syndrome. We conducted a 3D motion analysis of 22 females and males running on an instrumented treadmill at four different inclinations (0%, -5%, -10%, -15%) at a speed of 3.5 m/s. We found significant differences for biomechanical risk factors associated with iliotibial band syndrome. Peak knee flexion angle at initial ground contact (p < .001), peak knee adduction angle (p = .005), and iliotibial band strain (p < .001) systematically increased with increasing slope. Downhill running increases biomechanical risk factors for iliotibial band syndrome. Our results highlight the need to consider the individual running environment in assessing overuse injury risk in runners.
Running footwear is continuously being modified and improved; however, running-related overuse injury rates remain high. Nevertheless, novel manufacturing processes enable the production of individualized running shoes that can fit the individual needs of runners, with the potential to reduce injury risk. For this reason, it is essential to investigate functional groups of runners, a collective of runners who respond similarly to a footwear intervention. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a framework to identify functional groups based on their individual footwear response regarding injury-specific running-related risk factors for Achilles tendinopathy, Tibial stress fractures, Medial tibial stress syndrome, and Patellofemoral pain syndrome. In this work, we quantified the footwear response patterns of 73 female and male participants when running in three different footwear conditions using unsupervised learning (k-means clustering). For each functional group, we identified the footwear conditions minimizing the injury-specific risk factors. We described differences in the functional groups regarding their running style, anthropometric, footwear perception, and demographics. The results implied that most functional groups showed a tendency for a single footwear condition to reduce most biomechanical risk factors for a specific overuse injury. Functional groups often differed in their hip and pelvis kinematics as well as their subjective rating of the footwear conditions. The footwear intervention only partially affected biomechanical risk factors attributed to more proximal joints. Due to its adaptive nature, the framework could be applied to other footwear interventions or performance-related biomechanical variables.
This study aimed to compare a simplified calculation of the knee abduction moment with the traditional inverse dynamics calculation when athletes perform fake-cut maneuvers with different complexities. In the simplified calculation, we multiply the force vector with its lever arm to the knee, projected onto the local coordinate system of the proximal thigh, hence neglecting the inertial contributions from distal segments. We found very strong ranking consistency using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient when using the simplified method compared to the traditional calculation. Independent of the tasks, the simplified method resulted in higher moments than the inverse dynamics. This was caused by ignoring the moment caused by segment linear acceleration generating a counteracting moment by about 7%. An alternative to the complex calculations of inverse dynamics can be used to investigate the contributions of the GRF magnitude and its lever arm to the knee.
The purpose of this study was to 1) compare knee joint kinematics and kinetics of fake-and-cut tasks of varying complexity in 51 female handball players and 2) present a case study of one athlete who ruptured her ACL three weeks post data collection. External knee joint moments and knee joint angles in all planes at the instance of the peak external knee abduction moment (KAM) as well as moment and angle time curves were analyzed. Peak KAMs and knee internal rotation moments were substantially higher than published values obtained during simple change-of-direction tasks and, along with flexion angles, differed significantly between the tasks. Introducing a ball reception and a static defender increased joint loads while they partially decreased again when anticipation was lacking. Our results suggest to use game-specific assessments of injury risk while complexity levels do not directly increase knee loading. Extreme values of several risk factors for a post-test injured athlete highlight the need and usefulness of appropriate screenings.

High-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), as the modern form of TLC (thin-layer chromatography), is suitable for detecting pharmaceutically active compounds over a wide polarity range using the gradient multiple development (GMD) technique. Diode-array detection (DAD) in conjunction with HPTLC can simultaneously acquire ultraviolet‒visible (UV‒VIS) and fluorescence spectra directly from the plate. Visualization as a contour plot helps to identify separated zones. An orange peel extract is used as an example to show how GMD‒DAD‒HPTLC in seven different developments with seven different solvents can provide an overview of the entire sample. More than 50 compounds in the extract can be separated on a 6-cm HPTLC plate. Such separations take place in the biologically inert stationary phase of HPTLC, making it a suitable method for effect-directed analysis (EDA). HPTLC‒EDA can even be performed with living organism, as confirmed by the use of Aliivibrio fischeri bacteria to detect bioluminescence as a measure of toxicity. The combining of gradient multiple development planar chromatography with diode-array detection and effect-directed analysis (GMD‒DAD‒HPTLC‒EDA) in conjunction with specific staining methods and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF‒MS) will be the method of choice to find new chemical structures from plant extracts that can serve as the basic structure for new pharmaceutically active compounds.
Two solvent mixtures for high-performance thin-layer chromatographic (HPTLC) separation of some compounds showing estrogenic activity in the yeast estrogen screen (YES) assay are presented. The new method, planar yeast estrogen screen (pYES) combines the YES assay and a chromatographic separation on silica gel HPTLC plates with the performance of the YES assay. For separation, the analytes were applied bandwise to HPTLC plates (10 × 20 cm) with fluorescent dye (Merck, Germany). The plates were developed in a vertical developing chamber after 30 min of chamber saturation over a separation distance of 70 mm, using cyclohexane‒methyl-ethyl ketone (2:1, V/V) or cyclohexane‒CPME (3:2, V/V) as solvents. Both solvents allow separation of estriol, daidzein, genistein, 17β-estradiol, 17α-ethinyl estradiol, estrone, 4-nonylphenol and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate.
