This paper reports on the evolution of cracks in the cylinder heads of a large V8 Diesel engine during cyclic engine tests. The observations are compared with the predictions of a lifetime model for combined thermo-mechanical (TMF) and high cycle fatigue (HCF) loading, which is based on a fracture mechanics analysis of microcrack growth in viscoplastic solids and assumes that the crack advance per cycle is proportional to the cyclic crack tip opening displacement. Since the material of the cylinder heads, the cast iron EN-GJV450, exhibits the typical features of cast iron, namely pressure dependence of the yield stress, dilatancy and tension-compression asymmetry, the Gurson model is applied and combined with the viscoplastic Chaboche model. This constitutive model together with the lifetime model is implemented into a finite element code as a user defined material routine. Published model parameters for the considered cast iron are used to carry out the simulation of the engine test. This simulation comprises a CFD analysis to determine the heat transfer coefficients, a thermal analysis of the load cycle and the mechanical analysis. The thermal analysis reproduces the temperatures at various measuring points sufficiently accurately. Finally, the mechanical analysis predicts the location and orientation of the cracks in the valve bridges correctly in all cases. However, the lifetime predictions are rather conservative compared to the tests (by a factor of 1 to 5 in lifetime). This is discussed and explained by the fact that the cracks were detected in the tests only when they had already spread over a substantial fraction of the valve bridge width. To describe this situation a long-crack analysis would be necessary, which is not yet included in the applied lifetime model.
In this paper the fatigue life of three cast iron materials, namely EN-GJS-700, EN-GJV-450 and EN-GJL-250, is predicted for combined thermomechanical fatigue and high cycle fatigue loading. To this end, a mechanism-based model is used, which is based on microcrack growth. The model considers crack growth due to low frequency loading (thermomechanical and low cycle fatigue) and due to high cycle fatigue. To determine the model parameters for the cast iron materials, fatigue tests are performed under combined loading and crack growth is measured at room temperature using the replica technique. Superimposed high cycle fatigue leads to an accelerated crack growth as soon as a critical crack length and thus the threshold stress intensity factor is exceeded. The model takes this effect into account and predicts the fatigue lives of all cast iron materials investigated under combined loadings very well.
In this paper, the initial multiaxial yield behavior of three different gray cast iron materials with lamellar shaped graphite inclusions is numerically investigated by means of the finite-element method. Therefore, volume elements including the real microstructure of the materials are loaded bi- and triaxially beyond macroscopic yield. The shape of the obtained yield surfaces are compared to the surfaces of four continuum models which, amongst others, are proposed in literature to describe the inelastic behavior of gray cast iron with lamellar shaped graphite inclusions. It is found that the presented continuum models and the macroscopic yield surfaces obtained with microstructure-based finite-element models deviate. Furthermore, the initial inelastic flow direction is computed at the onset of macroscopic yielding. The analysis show that the inelastic flow is normal to the yield surface.
A new yield function for lamellar gray cast iron materials is proposed. The new model is able to describe the results of recently performed microstructure-based finite-element computations that resolve the three dimensional yield surface of three different gray cast irons. The yield function requires only the yield stress in tension and compression of the respective material as model parameters. Furthermore, the algorithmic formulation of the new model is assessed for numerical robustness and efficiency.
In this paper, an unconditionally stable algorithm for the numerical integration and finite-element implementation of a class of pressure dependent plasticity models with nonlinear isotropic and kinematic hardening is presented. Existing algorithms are improved in the sense that the number of equations to be solved iteratively is significantly reduced. This is achieved by exploitation of the structure of Armstrong-Frederik-type kinematic hardening laws. The consistent material tangent is derived analytically and compared to the numerically computed tangent in order to validate the implementation. The performance of the new algorithm is compared to an existing one that does not consider the possibility of reducing the number of unknowns to be iterated. The algorithm is used to implement a time and temperature dependent cast iron plasticity model, which is based on the pressure dependent Gurson model, in the finite-element program ABAQUS. The implementation is applied to compute stresses and strains in a large-scale finite-element model of a three cylinder engine block. This computation proofs the applicability of the algorithm in industrial practice that is of interest in applied sciences.
In this paper the yield surface of a recently presented microstructure-based volume element of the gray cast iron material GJL-250 is assessed after different plastic loading histories. The evolution of the yield surface is investigated for different volumetric, deviatoric and uniaxial loadings. The micromechanical material properties of the metallic matrix and the graphite inclusions are validated by means experimental stress-strain hysteresis loops. The metallic matrix is modeled as elastic-plastic with a non-linear kinematic hardening law. The graphite inclusions are described by means of a volumetric strain state dependent Young’s modulus. The results show that the shape of the yield surface does not change significantly in comparison to the initial yield surface after pure deviatoric loadings. After volumetric loadings, the dependence of the material on the Lode angle is significantly reduced. Uniaxial tensile preloadings result in a deformed yield surface, whereby the magnitude of the deformation depends on the applied load. Uniaxial preloadings to compression do not change the shape of the initial yield surface.
This paper focuses on the microstructure-dependent inelastic behavior of lamellar gray cast iron. It comprises the reconstruction of three dimensional volume elements by use of the serial sectioning method for the materials GJL-150, GJL-250 and GJL-350. The obtained volume elements are prepared for the numerical analyses by means of finite-element method. In the finite-element analysis, the metallic matrix is modeled with an elastic–plastic deformation law. The graphite inclusions are modeled nonlinear elastic with a decreasing value of Young’s modulus for increasing tensile loading. Thus, the typical tension–compression asymmetry of this material class can be described. The stress–strain curves obtained with the microstructure-based finite-element models agree well with experimental curves of tension and compression tests. Besides the analysis of the whole volume element, the scatter of the stress–strain response in smaller statistical volume elements is investigated. Furthermore, numerical studies are performed to reduce computational costs.
In this paper, the multiaxial formulation of a mechanism-based model for fatigue life prediction is presented whichcan be applied to low-cycle fatigue (LCF) and thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) problems in which high-cycle fa-tigue loadings are superimposed. The model assumes that crack growth is the lifetime limiting mechanism and thatthe crack advance in a loading cycleda/dNcorrelates with the cyclic crack-tip opening displacement ΔCTOD.The multiaxial formulation makes use of fracture mechanics solutions and thus, does not need additional modelparameters quantifying the effect of the multiaxiality. Furthermore, the model includes contributions of HCF on ΔCTODand assesses the effect of the direction of the HCF loadings with respect to LCF or TMF loadings inthe life prediction. The model is implemented into the finite-element program ABAQUS. It is applied to predictthe fatigue life of a thermomechanically loaded notched specimen that should represent the situation between theinlet and outlet bore holes of cylinder heads. A good correlation of the predicted and the measured fatigue lives isobtained.
In this paper, the correlation of the cyclic J-integral, ΔJ, and the cyclic crack-tip opening displacement, ΔCTOD, is studied in the presence of crack closure to assess the question if ΔJ describes the crack-tip opening displacement in this case. To this end, a method is developed to evaluate ΔJ numerically within finite-element calculations. The method is validated for an elastic–plastic material that exhibits Masing behavior. Different strain ranges and strain ratios are considered under fully plastic cyclic conditions including crack closure. It is shown that the cyclic J-integral is the parameter to determine the cyclic crack-tip opening displacement even in cases where crack closure is present.

Due to the pandemic of 2020, many teaching and research institutions are confronted with extraordinary working conditions. In order to enable empirical data collection under these special circumstances, teachers and scientists need to respond flexibly and new concepts need to be developed. This paper deals with the challenges that arise in day-to-day teaching and provides different approaches to meet these challenges. It covers quantitative surveys, remote UX-testing methods as an alternative to eye tracking studies in the lab, as well as face-to-face user experience testings under strict hygiene measures.
Medical devices accompany our everyday life and come across in situations of worse condition, in significant moments concerning the health or during routine checkups. To ensure flawless operations and error-free results it is essential to test applications and devices. High risks for patient’s health come with operating errors [33] so that the presented research project, called Professional UX, identifies signals and irritations caused by the interaction with a certain device by analyzing mimic, voice and eye tracking data during user experience tests. Besides, this paper will provide information on typical errors of interactive applications which are based on an empirical lab-based survey and the evaluated results achieved. The pictured proceeding of user experience tests and the following analysis can also be applied to other fields and serves as a support for the optimization of products and systems.
As a university it is more and more difficult to reach all target groups equally. Common problems like information overload, numerous institutions with same focuses or multi-channel-communication make it hard to gain the attention of the target group. This paper is four-fold: we present an overview of the state of art and the importance of the study (I), based on which we highlight the approach to user experience analysis. First, we identified the irritations in the course of an expert evaluation (II) and verified them within the test, including the target groups (III). Finally, based on the results, we were able to pro-vide recommendations for action to improve the UX and to be used for the conception of an intranet (IV).
Public educational institutions are increasingly confronted with a decline in the number of applicants, which is why competition between colleges and universities is also intensifying. For this reason, it is important to position oneself as an institution in order to be perceived by the various target groups and to differentiate oneself from the competition. In this context, the brand and thus its perception and impact play a decisive role, especially in view of the desired communication of the institution's own values and its self-image, the brand identity. To this end, emotions serve as an approach to creating positive stimulation and brand loyalty.
The present paper addresses the research question: What recommendations for action and potential adjustments should an online magazine for beauty and fashion implement in order to make affiliate articles in these sections even more appealing to the target group and provide added value for them?
To be able to answer this research question, three hypotheses were defined and tested with using qualitative and quantitative research. The qualitative research consisted of user experience testings, where four affiliate articles in the fields of beauty and fashion were tested with 13 participants. The quantitative research involved collecting, analyzing and evaluating data from the four affiliate articles conducted with the company's real-life target group. Based on these results, recommendations for action were derived, which should not only improve the quality of the content in the future, but also increase the efficiency of the implementation of those articles.
To reach customers by dialog marketing campaigns is more and more difficult. This is a common problem of companies and marketing agencies worldwide: information overload, multi-channel-communication and a confusing variety of offers make it hard to gain the attention of the target group. The contribution of this paper is four-fold: we provide an overview of the current state of print dialog marketing activities and trends (I). Based on this corpus we identify the main key performance indicators of dialog marketing customer interaction (II). A qualitative user experience study identifies the customer wishes and needs, focusing on lottery offers for senior citizens (III). Finally, we evaluate the success of two different dialog marketing campaigns with 20,000 clients and compare the key performance indicators of the original hands-on experience-based print mailings with user experience tested and optimized mailings (IV).
The paper proposes a system architecture for charging infrastructure that serves the requirements of future fleets of shared-use electric vehicles in urban scenarios. The focus of the development is on the interfaces to central stakeholders such as mobility service providers, distribution network operators and utilities. The main concept of the proposed system is the adherence to a stringent resource-oriented design approach, following the design principles of the Representational State Transfer (REST) architectural software style for distributed systems. This design approach is used from the cloud-based services down to the implementation of the charging infrastructure's control algorithms. Focusing on the resources of the various entities simplifies the implementation of their interactions, compared to the explicit declaration of services that are available. The system design ensures that the charging infrastructure is open to all users and generates a benefit beyond basic charging operations. Integration in emerging smart markets is done via open web-based interfaces. These allow for the generation of an added value of concrete services for shared-use electric mobility. A link to the field of grid operation is proposed using the ISO/IEC 61850 telecontrol standard. The smart meter capabilities of the charging stations can be used to gain additional information on the current state of the distribution grid. As an exemplary service a load management service for a fleet of shared-use electric vehicles is going to be implemented.
A Localization System Using Inertial Measurement Units from Wireless Commercial Handheld Devices
(2013)
This paper describes a newly developed technology for the calculation of trajectories of mobile objects, which is based on commercially available sensors being integrated into modern mobile phones and other gadgets. First, a step counting technique was implemented. Second, a novel step length estimator is proposed. These two algorithms utilize the data from accelerometer sensor only. Third, the heading information was obtained using a gyroscope with complementary filter in quaternion form. The combined algorithm was implemented on a low-power ARM processor to provide the trajectory points relative to an initial point. The proposed technique was tested by 10 subjects, in different shoes with different paces. The dependence of the performance of the technology on the attaching point of the mobile device is weak. The proposed algorithms have better balance and estimation accuracy and depend in less degree on the variety in physical parameters of people in comparison with the existing techniques. In experiments inertial measurement units were mounted in different places, i.e. in the hand, in trousers or in T-shirt pockets. The return position error did not exceed 5% of the total travelled distance for all performed tests.
We tested the MOF framework Cu-BTC for natural gas (NG) storage. Adsorption isotherms of C1–C4 alkanes were simulated applying the Grand Canonical ensemble and the Monte Carlo algorithm in a classical molecular mechanics approach. Experimental monocomponent isotherm of the alkanes was used to validate the force field. We performed multicomponent adsorptions calculations for three different quaternary mixtures of C1–C4 alkanes, matching typical NG streams composition, and predicted theoretical storage capacities, efficiency and accumulation of the NG within that composition. Despite being one of the frameworks with greatest storage capacity of methane, we found that Cu-BTC presented great sensitivity to the variation of the heavier alkanes in NG composition. When we increase the percentage of butane from 0.1% to 0.7% in the mixture, the mass of components retained in the discharge pressure (1 bar) increases from 35 to 60%. We also perform siting and interaction energy investigations and compare the NG storage performance of the Cu-BTC with that of activated carbons. To our knowledge, this is the first study regarding the efficiency of the NG storage in Cu-BTC.
Limits of quantification of some neonicotinoid insecticides measured by thin-layer chromatography
(2012)
A simple method to quantify the neonicotinoid insecticides nitenpyram, thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, imidacloprid, thiacloprid and clothianidin directly on an HPTLC-plate is presented. As stationary phase silica gel 60 RP-18WF254 s plates were used and a mixture of methyl-t-butyl ether, 2-butanone, NH3 (25%) (5 + 2+0.1, v/v) was used as solvent. All neonicotinoid insecticides show light absorptions below 300 nm. The calculated limits of quantification (LOQ) by UV-detection are in the range from 12 ng to 26 ng on plate depending on the different insecticides.Nitenpyram can be stained using fast blue salt B, forming red zones. The observed LOQ is 25 ng on plate. Acetamiprid can be specifically stained using phenylglyoxylic acid forming a yellow/green fluorescent compound. The LOQ is 52 ng per spot. The compounds thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, thiacloprid and clothianidin can be transformed into blue fluorescing zones, using a relatively new staining solution. This consists of tetraphenylborate and HCl. This is the first publication mentioning that neonicotinoids undergo this reaction. The calculated limits of quantification are in the range from 10 ng to 27 ng on plate.A simple pre-treatment procedure using an acetonitrile extraction and a Chromabond SiOH clean up procedure leads to overall LOQs for bee samples of 48 to 108 µg/Kg. The method can be used to measure neonicotinoid contaminations of bees.
We will present the first example of a two-dimensional scanned TLC-plate, measured by use of a diode-array scanner. A spatial resolution of 250 µm was achieved on plate. The system provides real 2D fluorescence and absorption spectra in the wavelength-range from 190 to 1000 nm with a spectral resolution of greater than 1 nm. A mixture of 12 sulphonamides was separated by using a cyanopropyl-coated silica gel plate (Merck, 1.16464) with the solvent mix of methyl tert-butyl ether-methanol-dichloromethane-cyclohexane-NH3 (25%) (48:2:2:1:1, v/v) in the first and with a mixture of water-acetonitrile-dioxane-ethanol (8:2:1:1, v/v) in the second direction. Both developments were carried out over a distance of 70 mm. A separation number (spot capacity) of 259 was calculated. We discussed a new formula for its calculation in 2D-TLC separations. The drawback of this method is that measuring a 2D-TLC plate needs more than 3 h measurement time.
Quantification of astaxanthin in salmons by chemiluminescence and absorption after TLC separation
(2018)
Astaxanthin is a keto-carotenoid, belongs to the chemical class of terpenes and is a yellow lipid soluble compound. The compound is present in marine animals like salmons and crustacean. Its colour is due to conjugated double bonds and these double bonds are responsible for its antioxidant effect. Its antioxidant activity is ten times stronger than other carotenoids and nearly 500 fold stronger than vitamin-E. We present a new thin layer chromatography (TLC) method to measure astaxanthin on TLC-plates (Merck, 1.05554) in the visible absorption range as well as by using chemiluminescence. For separation a solvent mixture of cyclohexane and acetone (10 + 2.4, v/v) was used. The RF-value of astaxanthin is 0.14.The limit of detection in vis-absorption is 64 ng / band and the limit of quantification is 92 ng/band. In chemiluminescence the values are 90 ng / band and 115 ng/band. The method offers two independently working measurement modes on a single plate which increase the accuracy of the quantification.
A Validated Quantification of Sudan Red Dyes in Spicery using TLC and a 16-bit Flatbed Scanner
(2018)
We present a video-densitometric quantification method for Sudan red dyes in spices and spice mixtures, separated by TLC. Application was done band-wise in small dots using a 5 μL glass pipette. For separation, the RP-18 plates (20 × 20 cm with fluorescent dye; Merck, Germany, 1.05559) were developed in a vertical developing chamber without vapor saturation from the starting point to a distance of 70 mm by using acetonitrile, methanol, and aqueous ammonia solution (25%; 8 + 1.8 + 0.2, v/v) as mobile phase. The quantification is based on direct measurements using an inexpensive 16-bit flatbed scanner for color measurements (in red, green, and blue). Evaluation of only the green channel makes the measurements very specific. For linearization, an extended Kubelka-Munk expression for data transformation was used. The range of linearity covers more than two magnitudes and lies between 20 and 500 ng. The extraction from a 2 g sample with acetonitrile, evaporation, and reconstitution to 200 μL with methanol and the band-wise application (7 mm) of a 10 μL sample allows a statistically defined LOD of less than 500 ppb of Sudan red dyes. To perform the analysis, a separation chamber, RP-18 plates, 5 μL glass pipettes, and a 16-bit flatbed scanner for 105 € are needed; therefore, the separation method is inexpensive, fast, and reliable.
We present a two dimensional (2D) planar chromatographic separation of estrogenic active compounds on RP-18 (Merck, 1.05559) and silica gel (Merck, 1.05721) phase. A mixture of 13 substances was separated using a solvent mix consisting of methanol–acetonitrile–water (2 + 2 + 1, v/v/v) on RP-18 phase in the first direction and cyclohexane–butylacetate–methanol (8 + 6 + 1, v/v/v) in the second direction on silica gel plate. Both developments were carried out over a distance of 70 mm. We used the grafted method to combine both plates in a 2D-separation. This 2D-separation method can be used to quantify 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) in an effect-directed analysis using the yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae BJ3505. The test strain (according to McDonnell) contains the estrogen receptor. Its activation by estrogen active compounds is measured by inducting the reporter gene lacZ that encodes the enzyme ß-galactosidase. This enzyme activity is determined on plate by using the fluorescent substrate MUG (4-methylumbelliferyl ß-D-galactopyranoside).
We present a planar chromatographic separation method for the phytoestrogenic active compound equol, separated on RP-18 W (Merck, 1.14296) phase. It could be shown that an ethanolic cattle manure extract contains this phytoestrogenic active compound to a larger amount. As solvents for the mobile phase, hexane, ethyl acetate, and acetone (45:15:10, v/v); acetone and water (15:10, v/v); and n-hexane, CH2Cl2, ethyl acetate, methanol, and formic acid (40:40:20:5:1, v/v) have been used. After separation, a modified yeast estrogen screen (YES) test was applied, using the yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae BJ3505 containing an estrogen receptor. Its activation by equol induces the reporter gene lacZ which encodes the enzyme β-galactosidase. The enzyme activity is measured directly on the TLC plate by using the substrate MUG (4-methylumbelliferyl-β-d-galactopyranoside) or the substrate X-β-Gal (5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indoxyl-β-d-galactopyranoside). β-Galactosidase cleaves MUG into a fluorescing compound. X-β- Gal is also hydrolyzed and then oxidized by oxygen forming the deep-blue dye 5,5′-dibromo-4,4′-dichloro-indigo. Both reactions in combination with a thin-layer chromatography (TLC) separation allow very specific detecting of equol in cattle manure, although that is a very challenging matrix. Preliminary results show that the average content of equol in liquid manure is roughly 60 μg g−1. The value for urine is 50 μg mL−1.
We present a two-dimensional (2D) planar chromatographic separation method for phytoestrogenic active compounds on RP-18 W (Merck, 1.14296) phase. It could be shown that an ethanolic extract of liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) roots contains four phytoestrogenic active compounds. As solvent, in the first direction, the mix of hexane, ethyl acetate, and acetone (45:15:10, v/v) was used, and, in the second direction, that of acetone and water (15:10, v/v) was used. After separation, a modified yeast estrogen screen (YES) test was applied, using the yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae BJ3505. The test strain (according to McDonnell) contains the estrogen receptor. Its activation by estrogen active compounds is measured by inducing the reporter gene lacZ which encodes the enzyme β-galactosidase. This enzyme activity is determined on plate by using the fluorescent substrate MUG (4-methylumbelliferyl-β-d-galactopyranoside). The enzyme can also hydrolyse X-β-Gal (5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indoxyl-β-d-galactopyranosid) into β-galactose and 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indoxyl. The indoxyl compound is oxidized by oxygen forming the deep-blue dye 5,5β-dibromo-4,4β-dichloro-indigo which allows to detect phytoestrogenic activity more specific in the presence of native fluorescing compounds.

We provide a privacy-friendly cloud-based smart metering storage architecture which provides few-instance storage on encrypted measurements by at the same time allowing SQL queries on them. Our approach is most flexible with respect to two axes: on the one hand it allows to apply filtering rules on encrypted data with respect to various upcoming business cases; on the other hand it provides means for a storage-efficient handling of encrypted measurements by applying server-side deduplication techniques over all incoming smart meter measurements. Although the work at hand is purely dedicated to a smart metering architecture we believe our approach to have value for a broader class of IoT cloud storage solutions. Moreover, it is an example for Privacy-by-design supporting the positive-sum paradigm.
Ranging errors are inevitable in all local positioning systems, including those based on Time-of-Flight (ToF) technique. Results of experiments show that the major cause for these errors is a signal degradation from multipath propagation. This effect is especially critical in case of Non-Light-of-Sight (NLOS) conditions. This paper describes causes that affects ranging errors for nanoLOC™-TOF-technology and presents estimations for the probability density functions of such errors under different NLOS conditions. The provided estimations allow the improvement of the accuracy of the localization through the subsequent mitigation of the ranging errors from the measurements. Additionally, it is proposed to increase the number of cases of NLOS-conditions for the improvement of the accuracy.
On the possibility to use leaky feeders for positioning in chirp spread spectrum technologies
(2014)
Real Time Localization Systems using electromagnetic waves have significantly evolved during the last years. They also might be used in industrial and in mining environments. Here, topologies might include tunnels, where it might be difficult to ensure the field coverage. Leaky feeder cables are a common solution in case of normal radio communication. In this paper, we study the possibilities to use leaky feeders also for Time-of-Flight based real time localization in such linear topologies, like tunnels, but possibly also for 2D-localization. Theoretical analysis is verified with real-life measurements, which were performed using Chirp Spread Spectrum Technologies.
Ultra wide band (UWB) signals are well suited both for short-range wireless communication and for high-precision localization applications. Channel impulse response (CIR) analysis in UWB systems is a major element in localization estimation. In this paper, practical aspects of CIR are presented. I.e. a technique for the construction of the accumulated echo-gram of a multipath delayed signal is proposed. Decawave hardware was used to demonstrate the technique of analysis of fine structure of signals with a sub-nanosecond resolution. Temporal stability, reliability and two-way characteristics of such echo-grams are discussed as well. The results of using two EVK1000 radio modules as a radar installation to detect a target in indoor environments prove that a low cost UWB intrusion detection and through-the-wall-vision systems might be developed using the proposed technique.
The present study describes medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHAs) production by the Pseudomonas Gl01 strain isolated from mixed microbial communities utilized for PHAs synthesis. A two-step fedbatch fermentation was conducted with glucose and waste rapeseed oil as the main carbon source for obtaining cell growth and mcl-PHAs accumulation, respectively. The results show that the Pseudomonas Gl01 strain is capable of growing and accumulating mcl-PHAs using a waste oily carbon source. The biomass value reached 3.0 g/l of CDW with 20% of PHAs content within 48 h of cultivation. The polymer was purified from lyophilized cells and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC). The results revealed that the monomeric composition of the obtained polyesters depended on the available substrate. When glucose was used in the growth phase, 3-hydroxyundecanoate and 3- hydroxydodecanoate were found in the polymer composition, whereas in the PHAs-accumulating stage, the Pseudomonas Gl01 strain synthesized mcl-PHAs consisting mainly of 3- hydroxyoctanoate and 3-hydroxydecanoate. The transcriptional analysis using reverse-transcription real-time PCR reaction revealed that the phaC1 gene could be transcribed simultaneously to the phaZ gene.
Investigation of the Angle Dependency of Self-Calibration in Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output Radars
(2021)
Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) is a key technology in improving the angular resolution (spatial resolution) of radars. In MIMO radars the amplitude and phase errors in antenna elements lead to increase in the sidelobe level and a misalignment of the mainlobe. As the result the performance of the antenna channels will be affected. Firstly, this paper presents analysis of effect of the amplitude and phase errors on angular spectrum using Monte-Carlo simulations. Then, the results are compared with performed measurements. Finally, the error correction with a self-calibration method is proposed and its angle dependency is evaluated. It is shown that the values of the errors change with an incident angle, which leads to a required angle-dependent calibration.
In automotive parking scenario, where the curb shall be detected and classified to be traversable or not, radars play an important role. There are different approaches already proposed in other works to estimate the target height. This paper assesses and compares two methods. The first is based on Angle of Arrival (AoA) estimation of input signals of multiple antennas using the Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) principle. The second method uses the geometry in multipath propagation of the radar echo signal for one antenna input. In this work a modified method of calculation of the curb height based on the second method is proposed. The theory of approach is mathematically proved and effectiveness is demonstrated by evaluation of measurements with a 77 GHz Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar. In order to evaluate the performance of the introduced method the mean square error (MSE) is used in the proposed scenario. This method, using only one antenna input, produced up to 3.4 times better results for curb height detection in comparison with former methods.
