The Metering Bus, also known as M-Bus, is a European standard EN13757-3 for reading out metering devices, like electricity, water, gas, or heat meters. Although real-life M-Bus networks can reach a significant size and complexity, only very simple protocol analyzers are available to observe and maintain such networks. In order to provide developers and installers with the ability to analyze the real bus signals easily, a web-based monitoring tool for the M-Bus has been designed and implemented. Combined with a physical bus interface it allows for measuring and recording the bus signals. For this at first a circuit has been developed, which transforms the voltage and current-modulated M-Bus signals to a voltage signal that can be read by a standard ADC and processed by an MCU. The bus signals and packets are displayed using a web server, which analyzes and classifies the frame fragments. As an additional feature an oscilloscope functionality is included in order to visualize the physical signal on the bus. This paper describes the development of the read-out circuit for the Wired M-Bus and the data recovery.
Sustainable chemical processes should be designed to combine the technological advantages and progress with lower safety risks and minimization of environmental impact such as, for example, reduction of raw materials, energy and water consumption, and avoidance of hazardous waste and pollution with toxic chemical agents. A number of novel eco-friendly chemical technologies have been developed in the recent decades with the help of the eco-innovations approaches and methods such as Life Cycle Analysis, Green Process Engineering, Process Intensification, Process Design for Sustainability, and others. An emerging approach to the sustainable process design in process engineering builds on the innovative solutions inspired from nature. However, the implementation of the eco-friendly technologies often faces secondary ecological problems. The study postulates that the eco-inventive principles identified in natural systems allow to avoid secondary eco-problems and proposes to apply these principles for sustainable design in chemical process engineering. The research work critically examines how this approach differs from the biomimetics, as it is commonly used for copying natural systems. The application of nature-inspired eco-design principles is illustrated with an example of a sustainable technology for extraction of nickel from pyrophyllite.
Eco-innovations in chemical processes should be designed to use raw materials, energy and water as efficiently and economically as possible to avoid the generation of hazardous waste and to conserve raw material reserves. Applying inventive principles identified in natural systems to chemical process design can help avoid secondary problems. However, the selection of nature-inspired principles to improve technological or environmental problems is very time-consuming. In addition, it is necessary to match the strongest principles with the problems to be solved. Therefore, the research paper proposes a classification and assignment of nature-inspired inventive principles to eco-parameters, eco-engineering contradictions and eco-innovation domains, taking into account environmental, technological and economic requirements. This classification will help to identify suitable principles quickly and also to realize rapid innovation. In addition, to validate the proposed classification approach, the study is illustrated with the application of nature-inspired invention principles for the development of a sustainable process design for the extraction of high-purity silicon dioxide from pyrophyllite ores. Finally, the paper defines a future research agenda in the field of nature-inspired eco-engineering in the context of AI-assisted invention and innovation.
Eco-Feasibility Study and Application of Natural Inventive Principles in Chemical Engineering Design
(2022)
The early stages of the front-end process development are critical for the future success of projects involving new technologies. The application of eco-inventive principles identified in natural systems to the design of chemical processes and equipment allows one to find ways to mitigate or avoid secondary ecological problems such as, for example, higher consumption of raw materials or energy, generation of hazardous waste and pollution of the environment by toxic chemicals. However, before implementing a new technology in a real operational environment, it is necessary to completely investigate its undesirable ecological impact and to evaluate the future viability of this technology. Therefore, the research paper presents a study of ecological feasibility of an innovative process design utilising natural eco-inventive principles and analyses the correlations between applied inventive principles. Such eco-feasibility study can be considered as an important decision gate to determine whether the technology implementation should be moved forward. Furthermore, the study evaluates the practicability of natural inventive principles to the eco-friendly process design and is illustrated with an example of a sustainable technology for nickel extraction from pyrophyllite.
Amongst all the major hazard aspects for the health of people in big conglomerates is the increase of the particulate matter concentration. Traditional systems for particulate matter (PM) monitoring have a great number of drawbacks but the main issues are economical and are related to the installation costs and never ending periodical maintenance expenses. After all there are installations of such systems but their number is limited and having in mind the growth of population, cities and industry areas, there is even a bigger need for more information on air quality because PM changes non-linearly, has a wide range and different sources. In this paper, we propose an approach, based on low-cost sensor nodes, for real-time measuring and obtaining information about the PM concentration. The adoption of that approach allows for a detailed study of the intensities of pollution and its sources. The system power supply is powered by a PV module. The power supply unit is designed using a model-based design that is a new approach to prototyping power-operated electronic devices with guaranteed performance.
Data is ever increasing in the computing world. Due to advancement of cloud technology the dynamics of volumes of data and its capacity has increased within a short period of time and will keep increasing further. Providing transparency, privacy, and security to the cloud users is becoming more and more challenging along with the volume of data and use of cloud services. We propose a new approach to address the above mentioned challenge by recording the user events in the cloud ecosystem into log files and applying MAR principle namely 1) Monitoring 2) Analyzing and 3) Reporting.
Logging information is more precious as it contains the execution of a system; it is produced by millions of events from simple application logins to random system errors. Most of the security related problems in the cloud ecosystem like intruder attacks, data loss, and denial of service, etc. could be avoided if Cloud Service Provider (CSP) or Cloud User (CU) analyses the logging information. In this paper we introduced few challenges, which are place of monitoring, security, and ownership of the logging information between CSP and CU.
Also we proposed a logging architecture to analyze the behaviour of the cloud ecosystem, to avoid data breaches and other security related issues at the CSP space. So that we believe our proposed architecture can provide maximum trust between CU and CSP.
Computing Aggregates on Autonomous, Self-organizing Multi-Agent System: Application "Smart Grid"
(2017)
Decentralized data aggregation plays an important role in estimating the state of the smart grid, allowing the determination of meaningful system-wide measures (such as the current power generation, consumption, etc.) to balance the power in the grid environment. Data aggregation is often practicable if the aggregation is performed effectively. However, many existing approaches are lacking in terms of fault-tolerance. We present an approach to construct a robust self-organizing overlay by exploiting the heterogeneous characteristics of the nodes and interlinking the most reliable nodes to form an stable unstructured overlay. The network structure can recover from random state perturbations in finite time and tolerates substantial message loss. Our approach is inspired from biological and sociological self-organizing mechanisms.

In the age data digitalization, important applications of optics and photonics based sensors and technology lie in the field of biometrics and image processing. Protecting user data in a safe and secure way is an essential task in this area. However, traditional cryptographic protocols rely heavily on computer aided computation. Secure protocols which rely only on human interactions are usually simpler to understand. In many scenarios development of such protocols are also important for ease of implementation and deployment. Visual cryptography (VC) is an encryption technique on images (or text) in which decryption is done by human visual system. In this technique, an image is encrypted into number of pieces (known as shares). When the printed shares are physically superimposed together, the image can be decrypted with human vision. Modern digital watermarking technologies can be combined with VC for image copyright protection where the shares can be watermarks (small identification) embedded in the image. Similarly, VC can be used for improving security of biometric authentication. This paper presents about design and implementation of a practical laboratory experiment based on the concept of VC for a course in media engineering. Specifically, our contribution deals with integration of VC in different schemes for applications like digital watermarking and biometric authentication in the field of optics and photonics. We describe theoretical concepts and propose our infrastructure for the experiment. Finally, we will evaluate the learning outcome of the experiment, performed by the students. © (2016) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). The economic dispatch (ED) problem is a large-scale optimization problem in electricity power grids. Its goal is to find a power output combination of all generator nodes that meet the demand of the customers at minimum operating cost. In recent years, distributed protocols have been proposed to replace the traditional centralized ED calculation for modern smart grid infrastructures with the most realistic being the one proposed by Binetti et al. (2014). However, we show that this protocol leaks private information of the generator nodes. We then propose a privacy-preserving distributed protocol that solves the ED problem. We analyze the security of our protocol and give experimental results from a prototype implementation to show the feasibility of the solution.
Economic dispatch is a well-known optimization problem in smart grid systems which aims at minimizing the total cost of power generation among generation units while maintaining some system constraints. Recently, some distributed consensus-based approaches have been proposed to replace traditional centralized calculation. However, existing approaches fail to protect privacy of individual units like cost function parameters, generator constraints, output power levels, etc. In this paper, we show an attack against an existing consensus-based economic dispatch algorithm from [16] assuming semi-honest non-colluding adversaries. Then we propose a simple solution by combining a secure sum protocol and the consensus-based economic dispatch algorithm that guarantees data privacy under the same attacker model. Our Privacy Preserving Economic Dispatch (PPED) protocol is information-theoretically secure.
6LoWPAN (IPv6 over Low Power Wireless Personal Area Networks) is gaining more and more attraction for the seamless connectivity of embedded devices for the Internet of Things (IoT). Whereas the lower layers (IEEE802.15.4 and 6LoWPAN) are already well defined and consolidated with regard to frame formats, header compression, routing protocols and commissioning procedures, there is still an abundant choice of possibilities on the application layer. Currently, various groups are working towards standardization of the application layer, i.e. the ETSI Technical Committee on M2M, the IP for Smart Objects (IPSO) Alliance, Lightweight M2M (LWM2M) protocol of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), and OneM2M. This multitude of approaches leaves the system developer with the agony of choice. This paper selects, presents and explains one of the promising solutions, discusses its strengths and weaknesses, and demonstrates its implementation.
Turbocharger housings in internal combustion engines are subjected to severe mechanical and thermal cyclic loads throughout their life-time or during engine testing. The combination of thermal transients and mechanical load cycling results in a complex evolution of damage, leading to thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) of the material. For the computational TMF life assessment of high temperature components, the DTMF model can provide reliable TMF life predictions. The model is based on a short fatigue crack growth law and uses local finite-element (FE) results to predict the number of cycles to failure for a technical crack. In engine applications, it is nowadays often acceptable to have short cracks as long as they do not propagate and cause loss of function of the component. Thus, it is necessary to predict not only potential crack locations and the corresponding number of cycles for a technical crack, but also to determine subsequent crack growth or even a possible crack arrest. In this work, a method is proposed that allows the simulation of TMF crack growth in high temperature components using FE simulations and non-linear fracture mechanics (NLFM).
A NLFM based crack growth simulation method is described. This method starts with the FE analysis of a component. In this paper, the method is demonstrated for an automotive turbocharger housing subjected to TMF loading. A transient elastic-viscoplastic FE analysis is used to simulate four heating and cooling cycles of an engine test. The stresses, inelastic strains, and temperature histories from the FEA are then used to perform TMF life predictions using the standard DTMF model. The crack position and the crack plane of critical hotspots are then identified. Simulated cracks are inserted at the hotspots. For the model demonstrated, cracks were inserted at two hotspot locations. The ΔJ integral is computed as a fracture mechanics parameter at each point along the crack-front, and the crack extension of each point is then evaluated, allowing the crack to grow iteratively. The paper concludes with a comparison of the crack growth curves for both hotspots with experimental results.
This study aims to investigate the individual response concerning BRFs for AT when the mid-sole hardness underneath the rearfoot was systematically altered. We first identified FGs based on the footwear condition that minimised the risk for AT across BRFs. We then tested the FGs for differences in anthropometrics, footwear comfort, and running characteristics.
