Deep learning approaches are becoming increasingly important for the estimation of the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of mechanical elements such as bearings. This paper proposes and evaluates a novel transfer learning-based approach for RUL estimations of different bearing types with small datasets and low sampling rates. The approach is based on an intermediate domain that abstracts features of the bearings based on their fault frequencies. The features are processed by convolutional layers. Finally, the RUL estimation is performed using a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network. The transfer learning relies on a fixed-feature extraction. This novel deep learning approach successfully uses data of a low-frequency range, which is a precondition to use low-cost sensors. It is validated against the IEEE PHM 2012 Data Challenge, where it outperforms the winning approach. The results show its suitability for low-frequency sensor data and for efficient and effective transfer learning between different bearing types.
The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies across application domains has prompted our society to pay closer attention to AI’s trustworthiness, fairness, interpretability, and accountability. In order to foster trust in AI, it is important to consider the potential of interactive visualization, and how such visualizations help build trust in AI systems. This manifesto discusses the relevance of interactive visualizations and makes the following four claims: i) trust is not a technical problem, ii) trust is dynamic, iii) visualization cannot address all aspects of trust, and iv) visualization is crucial for human agency in AI.
Printed systems spark immense interest in industry, and for several parts such as solar cells or radio frequency identification antennas, printed products are already available on the market. This has led to intense research; however, printed field-effect transistors (FETs) and logics derived thereof still have not been sufficiently developed to be adapted by industry. Among others, one of the reasons for this is the lack of control of the threshold voltage during production. In this work, we show an approach to adjust the threshold voltage (Vth) in printed electrolyte-gated FETs (EGFETs) with high accuracy by doping indium-oxide semiconducting channels with chromium. Despite high doping concentrations achieved by a wet chemical process during precursor ink preparation, good on/off-ratios of more than five orders of magnitude could be demonstrated. The synthesis process is simple, inexpensive, and easily scalable and leads to depletion-mode EGFETs, which are fully functional at operation potentials below 2 V and allows us to increase Vth by approximately 0.5 V.
Users of a cochlear implant (CI) in one ear, who are provided with a hearing aid (HA) in the contralateral ear, so-called bimodal listeners, are typically affected by a constant and relatively large interaural time delay offset due to differences in signal processing and differences in stimulation. For HA stimulation, the cochlear travelling wave delay is added to the processing delay, while for CI stimulation, the auditory nerve fibers are stimulated directly. In case of MED-EL CI systems in combination with different HA types, the CI stimulation precedes the acoustic HA stimulation by 3 to 10 ms. A self-designed, battery-powered, portable, and programmable delay line was applied to the CI to reduce the device delay mismatch in nine bimodal listeners. We used an A-B-B-A test design and determined if sound source localization improves when the device delay mismatch is reduced by delaying the CI stimulation by the HA processing delay (τ HA ). Results revealed that every subject in our group of nine bimodal listeners benefited from the approach. The root-mean-square error of sound localization improved significantly from 52.6° to 37.9°. The signed bias also improved significantly from 25.2° to 10.5°, with positive values indicating a bias toward the CI. Furthermore, two other delay values (τ HA –1 ms and τ HA +1 ms) were applied, and with the latter value, the signed bias was further reduced in some test subjects. We conclude that sound source localization accuracy in bimodal listeners improves instantaneously and sustainably when the device delay mismatch is reduced.
Patients with focal ventricular tachycardia are at risk of hemodynamic failure and if no treatment is provided the mortality rate can exceed 30%. Therefore, medical professionals must be adequately trained in the management of these conditions. To achieve the best treatment, the origin of the abnormality should be known, as well as the course of the disease. This study provides an opportunity to visualize various focal ventricular tachycardias using the Offenburg heart rhythm model. Modeling and simulation of focal ventricular tachycardias in the Offenburg heart rhythm model was performed using CST (Computer Simulation Technology) software from Dessault Systèms. A bundle of nerve tissue in different regions in the left and right ventricle was defined as the focus in the already existing heart rhythm model. This ultimately served as the origin of the focal excitation sites. For the simulations, the heart rhythm model was divided into a mesh consisting of 5354516 tetrahedra, which is required to calculate the electric field lines. The simulations in the Offenburg heart rhythm model were able to successfully represent the progression of focal ventricular tachycardia in the heart using measured electrical field lines. The simulation results were realized as an animated sequence of images running in real time at a frame rate of 20 frames per second. By changing the frame rate, these simulations can additionally be produced at different speeds. The Offenburg heart rhythm model allows visualization of focal ventricular arrhythmias using computer simulations.
In recent years, both the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain technologies have been highly influential and revolutionary. IoT enables companies to embrace Industry 4.0, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which benefits from communication and connectivity to reduce cost and to increase productivity through sensor-based autonomy. These automated systems can be further refined with smart contracts that are executed within a blockchain, thereby increasing transparency through continuous and indisputable logging. Ideally, the level of security for these IoT devices shall be very high, as they are specifically designed for this autonomous and networked environment. This paper discusses a use case of a company with legacy devices that wants to benefit from the features and functionality of blockchain technology. In particular, the implications of retrofit solutions are analyzed. The use of the BISS:4.0 platform is proposed as the underlying infrastructure. BISS:4.0 is
intended to integrate the blockchain technologies into existing enterprise environments. Furthermore, a security analysis of IoT and blockchain present attacks and countermeasures are presented that are identified and applied to the mentioned use case.
Industrial companies can use blockchain to assist them in resolving their trust and security issues. In this research, we provide a fully distributed blockchain-based architecture for industrial IoT, relying on trust management and reputation to enhance nodes’ trustworthiness. The purpose of this contribution is to introduce our system architecture to show how to secure network access for users with dynamic authorization management. All decisions in the system are made by trustful nodes’ consensus and are fully distributed. The remarkable feature of this system architecture is that the influence of the nodes’ power is lowered depending on their Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS), and the nodes’ significance and authority is determined by their behavior in the network.
This impact is based on game theory and an incentive mechanism for reputation between nodes. This system design can be used on legacy machines, which means that security and distributed systems
can be put in place at a low cost on industrial systems. While there are no numerical results yet, this work, based on the open questions regarding the majority problem and the proposed solutions based on a game-theoretic mechanism and a trust management system, points to what and how industrial IoT and existing blockchain frameworks that are focusing only on the power of PoW and PoS can be secured more effectively.
With many advances in sensor technology and the Internet of Things, Vehicle Ad Hoc Net- work (VANET) is becoming a new generation. VANET’s current technical challenges are deploying decentralized architecture and protecting privacy. Because Blockchain features are decentralized, distributed, mass storage, and non-manipulation features, this paper designs a new decentralized architecture using Blockchain technology called Blockchain-based VANET. Blockchain-based VANET can effectively resolve centralized problems and mutual distrust between VANET units. To achieve this, it is needed to provide scalability on the blockchain to run for VANET. In this system, our focus is on the reliability of incoming messages on the network. Vehicles check the validity of the received messages using the proposed Bayesian formula for trust management system and some information saved in the Blockchain. Then, based on the validation result, the vehicle computes a rate for each message type and message source vehicle. Vehicles upload the computed rates to Roadside Units (RSUs) in order to calculate the net reliability value. Finally, RSUs using a sharding consensus mechanism generate blocks, including the net reliability value as a transaction. In this system, all RSUs collaboratively maintain the latest updated Blockchain. Our experimental results show that the proposed system is effective, scalable and dependable in data gathering, computing, organization, and retrieval of trust values in VANET.
With the function RooTri(), we present a simple and robust calculation method for the approximation of the intersection points of a scalar field given as an unstructured point cloud with a plane oriented arbitrarily in space. The point cloud is approximated to a surface consisting of triangles whose edges are used for computing the intersection points. The function contourc() of Matlab is taken as a reference. Our experiments show that the function contourc() produces outliers that deviate significantly from the defined nominal value, while the quality of the results produced by the function RooTri() increases with finer resolution of the examined grid.
Printed electronics (PE) circuits have several advantages over silicon counterparts for the applications where mechanical flexibility, extremely low-cost, large area, and custom fabrication are required. The custom (personalized) fabrication is a key feature of this technology, enabling customization per application, even in small quantities due to low-cost printing compared with lithography. However, the personalized and on-demand fabrication, the non-standard circuit design, and the limited number of printing layers with larger geometries compared with traditional silicon chip manufacturing open doors for new and unique reverse engineering (RE) schemes for this technology. In this paper, we present a robust RE methodology based on supervised machine learning, starting from image acquisition all the way to netlist extraction. The results show that the proposed RE methodology can reverse engineer the PE circuits with very limited manual effort and is robust against non-standard circuit design, customized layouts, and high variations resulting from the inherent properties of PE manufacturing processes.
In users of a cochlear implant (CI) together with a contralateral hearing aid (HA), so-called bimodal listeners, differences in processing latencies between digital HA and CI up to 9 ms constantly superimpose interaural time differences. In the present study, the effect of this device delay mismatch on sound localization accuracy was investigated. For this purpose, localization accuracy in the frontal horizontal plane was measured with the original and minimized device delay mismatch. The reduction was achieved by delaying the CI stimulation according to the delay of the individually worn HA. For this, a portable, programmable, battery-powered delay line based on a ring buffer running on a microcontroller was designed and assembled. After an acclimatization period to the delayed CI stimulation of 1 hr, the nine bimodal study participants showed a highly significant improvement in localization accuracy of 11.6% compared with the everyday situation without the delay line (p < .01). Concluding, delaying CI stimulation to minimize the device delay mismatch seems to be a promising method to increase sound localization accuracy in bimodal listeners.
Emerging applications in soft robotics, wearables, smart consumer products or IoT-devices benefit from soft materials, flexible substrates in conjunction with electronic functionality. Due to high production costs and conformity restrictions, rigid silicon technologies do not meet application requirements in these new domains. However, whenever signal processing becomes too comprehensive, silicon technology must be used for the high-performance computing unit. At the same time, designing everything in flexible or printed electronics using conventional digital logic is not feasible yet due to the limitations of printed technologies in terms of performance, power and integration density. We propose to rather use the strengths of neuromorphic computing architectures consisting in their homogeneous topologies, few building blocks and analog signal processing to be mapped to an inkjet-printed hardware architecture. It has remained a challenge to demonstrate non-linear elements besides weighted aggregation. We demonstrate in this work printed hardware building blocks such as inverter-based comprehensive weight representation and resistive crossbars as well as printed transistor-based activation functions. In addition, we present a learning algorithm developed to train the proposed printed NCS architecture based on specific requirements and constraints of the technology.
Printed electrolyte-gated oxide electronics is an emerging electronic technology in the low voltage regime (≤1 V). Whereas in the past mainly dielectrics have been used for gating the transistors, many recent approaches employ the advantages of solution processable, solid polymer electrolytes, or ion gels that provide high gate capacitances produced by a Helmholtz double layer, allowing for low-voltage operation. Herein, with special focus on work performed at KIT recent advances in building electronic circuits based on indium oxide, n-type electrolyte-gated field-effect transistors (EGFETs) are reviewed. When integrated into ring oscillator circuits a digital performance ranging from 250 Hz at 1 V up to 1 kHz is achieved. Sequential circuits such as memory cells are also demonstrated. More complex circuits are feasible but remain challenging also because of the high variability of the printed devices. However, the device inherent variability can be even exploited in security circuits such as physically unclonable functions (PUFs), which output a reliable and unique, device specific, digital response signal. As an overall advantage of the technology all the presented circuits can operate at very low supply voltages (0.6 V), which is crucial for low-power printed electronics applications.
Electrolyte-gated thin-film transistors (EGTs) with indium oxide channel, and expected lifetime of three months, enable low-voltage operation (~1 V) in the field of printed electronics (PEs). The channel width of our printed EGTs is varied between 200 and 1000 μm, whereas a channel length between 10 and 100 μm is used. Due to the lack of uniform performance p-type metal oxide semiconductors, n-type EGTs and passive elements are used to design circuits. For logic gates, transistor-resistor logic has been employed so far, but depletion and enhancement-mode EGTs in a transistor-transistor logic boost the circuit performance in terms of delay and signal swing. In this article, the threshold voltage of the EGT, which determines the operation mode, is tuned through sizing of the EGTs channel geometry. The feasibility of both transistor operation modes is demonstrated for logic gates and ring oscillators. An inverter operating at a supply voltage of 1 V shows a maximum gain of 9.6 and a propagation delay time of 0.7 ms, which represents an improvement of ~ 2x for the gain and oscillation frequency, in comparison with the resistor-transistor logic design. Moreover, the power consumption is reduced by 6x.
Predictive control has great potential in the home energy management domain. However, such controls need reliable predictions of the system dynamics as well as energy consumption and generation, and the actual implementation in the real system is associated with many challenges. This paper presents the implementation of predictive controls for a heat pump with thermal storage in a real single-family house with a photovoltaic rooftop system. The predictive controls make use of a novel cloud camera-based short-term solar energy prediction and an intraday prediction system that includes additional data sources. In addition, machine learning methods were used to model the dynamics of the heating system and predict loads using extensive measured data. The results of the real and simulated operation will be presented.
Commercial simulators can only reproduce electrocardiograms (ECG) of the normal and diseased heart rhythm in a simplified waveform and with a low number of channels. With the presented project, the variety of digitally archived ECGs, recorded during electrophysiological examinations, should be made usable as original analogue signals for research and teaching purposes by the development of a special printed circuit board for the mini-computer “Raspberry-Pi “.
Aerosol particles play an important role in the climate system by absorbing and scattering radiation and influencing cloud properties. They are also one of the biggest sources of uncertainty for climate modeling. Many climate models do not include aerosols in sufficient detail due to computational constraints. To represent key processes, aerosol microphysical properties and processes have to be accounted for. This is done in the ECHAM-HAM (European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast-Hamburg-Hamburg) global climate aerosol model using the M7 microphysics, but high computational costs make it very expensive to run with finer resolution or for a longer time. We aim to use machine learning to emulate the microphysics model at sufficient accuracy and reduce the computational cost by being fast at inference time. The original M7 model is used to generate data of input–output pairs to train a neural network (NN) on it. We are able to learn the variables’ tendencies achieving an average R² score of 77.1%. We further explore methods to inform and constrain the NN with physical knowledge to reduce mass violation and enforce mass positivity. On a Graphics processing unit (GPU), we achieve a speed-up of up to over 64 times faster when compared to the original model.
Significant progress in the development and commercialization of electrically conductive adhesives has been made. This makes shingling a very attractive approach for solar cell interconnection. In this study, we investigate the shading tolerance of two types of solar modules based on shingle interconnection: first, the already commercialized string approach, and second, the matrix technology where solar cells are intrinsically interconnected in parallel and in series. An experimentally validated LTspice model predicts major advantages for the power output of the matrix layout under partial shading. Diagonal as well as random shading of a 1.6-m2 solar module is examined. Power gains of up to 73.8 % for diagonal shading and up to 96.5 % for random shading are found for the matrix technology compared to the standard string approach. The key factor is an increased current extraction due to lateral current flows. Especially under minor shading, the matrix technology benefits from an increased fill factor as well. Under diagonal shading, we find the probability of parts of the matrix module being bypassed to be reduced by 40 % in comparison to the string module. In consequence, the overall risk of hotspot occurrence in matrix modules is decreased significantly.
In this paper pathophysiological interrelated deactivation/activation phenomena are set out in the example of whiplash injury. These phenomena could have been underestimated in previous positron emission tomography studies as their focus was on hypoperfusion rather than hyperperfusion. In addition, statistical parametric mapping analysis of cerebral studies is normally not fine-tuned to special interesting areas rather than to obvious clusters of difference.
Physical unclonable functions (PUFs) are increasingly generating attention in the field of hardware-based security for the Internet of Things (IoT). A PUF, as its name implies, is a physical element with a special and unique inherent characteristic and can act as the security anchor for authentication and cryptographic applications. Keeping in mind that the PUF outputs are prone to change in the presence of noise and environmental variations, it is critical to derive reliable keys from the PUF and to use the maximum entropy at the same time. In this work, the PUF output positioning (POP) method is proposed, which is a novel method for grouping the PUF outputs in order to maximize the extracted entropy. To achieve this, an offset data is introduced as helper data, which is used to relax the constraints considered for the grouping of PUF outputs, and deriving more entropy, while reducing the secret key error bits. To implement the method, the key enrollment and key generation algorithms are presented. Based on a theoretical analysis of the achieved entropy, it is proven that POP can maximize the achieved entropy, while respecting the constraints induced to guarantee the reliability of the secret key. Moreover, a detailed security analysis is presented, which shows the resilience of the method against cyber-security attacks. The findings of this work are evaluated by applying the method on a hybrid printed PUF, where it can be practically shown that the proposed method outperforms other existing group-based PUF key generation methods.
Printed electronics can benefit from the deployment of electrolytesas gate insulators, which enables a high gate capacitance per unit area (1–10 μFcm−2) due to the formation of electrical double layers (EDLs). Consequently, electrolyte-gated field-effect transistors (EGFETs) attain high-charge carrier densities already in the subvoltage regime, allowing for low-voltage operation of circuits and systems. This article presents a systematic study of lumped terminal capacitances of printed electrolyte-gated transistors under various dc bias conditions. We perform voltage-dependent impedancemeasurements and separate extrinsic components from the lumped terminal capacitance.
The proposed Meyer-like capacitance model, which also accounts for the nonquasi-static (NQS) effect, agrees well with experimental data. Finally, to verify the model, we implement it in Verilog-A and simulate the transient response of an inverter and a ring oscillator circuit. Simulation results are in good agreement with the measurement data of fabricated devices.
A new concept for robust non-invasive optical activation of motorized hand prostheses by simple and non-contactcommands is presented. In addition, a novel approach for aiding hand amputees is shown, outlining significantprogress in thinking worth testing. In this, personalized 3D-printed artificial flexible hands are combined withcommercially available motorized exoskeletons, as they are used e.g. in tetraplegics.
Morphological transition of a rod-shaped phase into a string of spherical particles is commonly observed in the microstructures of alloys during solidification (Ratke and Mueller, 2006). This transition phenomenon can be explained by the classic Plateau-Rayleigh theory which was derived for fluid jets based on the surface area minimization principle. The quintessential work of Plateau-Rayleigh considers tiny perturbations (amplitude much less than the radius) to the continuous phase and for large amplitude perturbations, the breakup condition for the rod-shaped phase is still a knotty issue. Here, we present a concise thermodynamic model based on the surface area minimization principle as well as a non-linear stability analysis to generalize Plateau-Rayleigh’s criterion for finite amplitude perturbations. Our results demonstrate a breakup transition from a continuous phase via dispersed particles towards a uniform-radius cylinder, which has not been found previously, but is observed in our phase-field simulations. This new observation is attributed to a geometric constraint, which was overlooked in former studies. We anticipate that our results can provide further insights on microstructures with spherical particles and cylinder-shaped phases.
Titanium and stainless steel are commonly known as osteosynthesis materials with high strength and good biocompatibility. However, they have the big disadvantage that a second operation for hardware removal is necessary. Although resorbable systems made of polymers or magnesium are increasingly used, they show some severe adverse foreign body reactions or unsatisfying degradation behavior. Therefore, we started to investigate molybdenum as a potential new biodegradable material for osteosynthesis in craniomaxillofacial surgery. To characterize molybdenum as a biocompatible material, we performed in vitro assays in accordance with ISO Norm 10993-5. In four different experimental setups, we showed that pure molybdenum and molybdenum rhenium alloys do not lead to cytotoxicity in human and mouse fibroblasts. We also examined the degradation behavior of molybdenum by carrying out long-term immersion tests (up to 6 months) with molybdenum sheet metal. We showed that molybdenum has sufficient mechanical stability over at least 6 months for implants on the one hand and is subject to very uniform degradation on the other. The results of our experiments are very promising for the development of new resorbable osteosynthesis materials for craniomaxillofacial surgery based on molybdenum.

In asymmetric treatment of hearing loss, processing latencies of the modalities typically differ. This often alters the reference interaural time difference (ITD) (i.e., the ITD at 0° azimuth) by several milliseconds. Such changes in reference ITD have shown to influence sound source localization in bimodal listeners provided with a hearing aid (HA) in one and a cochlear implant (CI) in the contralateral ear. In this study, the effect of changes in reference ITD on speech understanding, especially spatial release from masking (SRM) in normal-hearing subjects was explored. Speech reception thresholds (SRT) were measured in ten normal-hearing subjects for reference ITDs of 0, 1.75, 3.5, 5.25 and 7 ms with spatially collocated (S0N0) and spatially separated (S0N90) sound sources. Further, the cues for separation of target and masker were manipulated to measure the effect of a reference ITD on unmasking by A) ITDs and interaural level differences (ILDs), B) ITDs only and C) ILDs only. A blind equalization-cancellation (EC) model was applied to simulate all measured conditions. SRM decreased significantly in conditions A) and B) when the reference ITD was increased: In condition A) from 8.8 dB SNR on average at 0 ms reference ITD to 4.6 dB at 7 ms, in condition B) from 5.5 dB to 1.1 dB. In condition C) no significant effect was found. These results were accurately predicted by the applied EC-model. The outcomes show that interaural processing latency differences should be considered in asymmetric treatment of hearing loss.
The article investigates the development of a manufacturing route for highly porous titanium foams suitable for craniofacial surgery applications, particularly in cranioplasties. The study focuses on the polyurethane replication method for foam production and emphasizes reducing residual gas content, as it significantly affects the mechanical properties and suitability for approval of the foams. Various factors such as starting materials, solvent debinding, heating schedules, and hydrogen atmosphere are analyzed for their impact on residual gas content. It is shown that significant reductions in residual gas content can only be achieved by reworking each step of the process. A combination of initial solvent debinding of the PU template with dimethyl sulphoxide, reduction of suspension additives, use of coarser Gd. 1 powders, and an integrated debinding and sintering process under partial hydrogen atmosphere achieves a significant reduction in residual gas content. This way, the potential for producing titanium foams that comply with relevant standards for craniofacial implants is demonstrated.

Recently, we reported the three-dimensional computer-aided design (3D-CAD) reconstruction of the first “Iron Hand” of the famous Franconian knight, Götz von Berlichingen (1480–1562), who lost his right hand by a cannon ball splinter injury in 1504 in the War of the Succession of Landshut [...]
Fifth-generation (5G) cellular mobile networks are expected to support mission-critical low latency applications in addition to mobile broadband services, where fourth-generation (4G) cellular networks are unable to support Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC). However, it might be interesting to understand which latency requirements can be met with both 4G and 5G networks. In this paper, we discuss (1) the components contributing to the latency of cellular networks and (2) evaluate control-plane and user-plane latencies for current-generation narrowband cellular networks and point out the potential improvements to reduce the latency of these networks, (3) present, implement and evaluate latency reduction techniques for latency-critical applications. The two elements we detected, namely the short transmission time interval and the semi-persistent scheduling are very promising as they allow to shorten the delay to processing received information both into the control and data planes. We then analyze the potential of latency reduction techniques for URLLC applications. To this end, we develop these techniques into the long term evolution (LTE) module of ns-3 simulator and then evaluate the performance of the proposed techniques into two different application fields: industrial automation and intelligent transportation systems. Our detailed evaluation results from simulations indicate that LTE can satisfy the low-latency requirements for a large choice of use cases in each field.
In this editorial, a topic for general discussion in the field of neuroprosthetics of the upper limb is addressed: which way—invasive or non-invasive—is the right one for the future in the development of neuroprosthetic concepts. At present, two groups of research priorities (namely the invasive versus the non-invasive approach) seem to be emerging, without taking a closer look at the wishes but also the concerns of the patients. This piece is intended to stimulate the discussion on this.
A balcony photovoltaic (PV) system, also known as a micro-PV system, is a small PV system consisting of one or two solar modules with an output of 100–600 Wp and a corresponding inverter that uses standard plugs to feed the renewable energy into the house grid. In the present study we demonstrate the integration of a commercial lithium-ion battery into a commercial micro-PV system. We firstly show simulations over one year with one second time resolution which we use to assess the influence of battery and PV size on self-consumption, self-sufficiency and the annual cost savings. We then develop and operate experimental setups using two different architectures for integrating the battery into the micro-PV system. In the passive hybrid architecture, the battery is in parallel electrical connection to the PV module. In the active hybrid architecture, an additional DC-DC converter is used. Both architectures include measures to avoid maximum power point tracking of the battery by the module inverter. Resulting PV/battery/inverter systems with 300 Wp PV and 555 Wh battery were tested in continuous operation over three days under real solar irradiance conditions. Both architectures were able to maintain stable operation and demonstrate the shift of PV energy from the day into the night. System efficiencies were observed comparable to a reference system without battery. This study therefore demonstrates the feasibility of both active and passive coupling architectures.
Electrolyte-gated transistors (EGTs) represent an interesting alternative to conventional dielectric-gating to reduce the required high supply voltage for printed electronic applications. Here, a type of ink-jet printable ion-gel is introduced and optimized to fabricate a chemically crosslinked ion-gel by self-assembled gelation, without additional crosslinking processes, e.g., UV-curing. For the self-assembled gelation, poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) are used as the polymer backbone and chemical crosslinker, respectively, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([EMIM][OTf]) is utilized as an ionic species to ensure ionic conductivity. The as-synthesized ion-gel exhibits an ionic conductivity of ≈5 mS cm−1 and an effective capacitance of 5.4 µF cm−2 at 1 Hz. The ion-gel is successfully employed in EGTs with an indium oxide (In2O3) channel, which shows on/off-ratios of up to 1.3 × 106 and a subthreshold swing of 80.62 mV dec−1.
In the domain of printed electronics (PE), field-effect transistors (FETs) with an oxide semiconductor channel are very promising. In particular, the use of high gate-capacitance of the composite solid polymer electrolytes (CSPEs) as a gate-insulator ensures extremely low voltage requirements. Besides high gate capacitance, such CSPEs are proven to be easily printable, stable in air over wide temperature ranges, and possess high ion conductivity. These CSPEs can be sensitive to moisture, especially for high surface-to-volume ratio printed thin films. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive experimental study on the effect of humidity on CSPE-gated single transistors. At the circuit level, the performance of ring oscillators (ROs) has been compared for various humidity conditions. The experimental results of the electrolyte-gated FETs (EGFETs) demonstrate rather comparable currents between 30%-90% humidity levels. However, the shifted transistor parameters lead to a significant performance change of the RO frequency behavior. The study in this paper shows the need of an impermeable encapsulation for the CSPE-gated FETs to ensure identical performance at all humidity conditions.
