One of the features of the barefoot shoe is the wide toe box, which is designed to provide maximum toe freedom. This study investigated the effect of shoe width on gait stability. 28 participants walked on the treadmill of the GRAIL system in four different shoe conditions (wash out, narrow, wide, tape) and three trials (baseline, perturbations, simulated inebriation) while motion tracking was applied. Gait stability was measured as 𝑀𝑜𝑆 (margin of stability), 𝑃𝑜𝐼 (probability of instability), stride length and stride time. There was no significant effect of shoe width on gait stability. On the other hand, age played a crucial role, as the older participants (middle-aged adults from 35 years) walked less stable. The type of trial was also important, as the simulated inebriation test was the most difficult for the participants. In addition, all participants were divided into either BX (barefoot experienced) or BUX (barefoot unexperienced) to understand the effect of wearing barefoot shoes. Compared to the BUX group, the BX participants showed the following results: shorter step time, wider step width and lower 𝑃𝑜𝐼 values (in barefoot shoes). It is possible that people who have had experience with barefoot shoes are able to walk more stably in a new shoe condition because they are less dependent on the shoe itself. This could be due to the development of healthier and stronger foot structures as a result of wearing barefoot shoes. To conclude, barefoot shoes may only lead to a healthier gait in the long run.…
