Partizipatives Parasitieren
(2016)
Critical theory and philosophy across many fields in the humanities has become awash with what has been characterised as ‘the material turn’. This material turn, which seems to involve varying combinations of what is known as Object Orientated Ontology (Harman), Actor-Network Theory (Latour), process philosophy (Whitehead), speculative realism (Bryant), or agential realism (Barad), emphasises some move toward a posthuman understanding of what the world is, and our relation to it.
DE\GLOBALIZE
(2022)
The artistic research cycle DE\GLOBALIZE is a media ecological search movement for the terrestrial. After examining matters of fact in India (2014-18), matters of concern in Egypt (2016-2019) and matters of care in the Upper Rhine (2018-22), the focus turns toward matters of violence in the Congo (2022). From matter to mater, mother-earth, the garden to exploitation. From science, water and climate to migration, oppression and extermination.
The long-term research is accessible through interactive web documentation. The platform serves as a continuous media-archaeological archive for a speculative ethnography. The relational structure of the videographic essay is enabling the forensic processing of single documents in the sense of the actor-network theory.
The subject of the presentation at IFM is a field trip to the Congo planned for March 2022, which will focus on the ambivalence of violence and care in collaboration with local artists. The field trip is based on the postcolonial reflection luderitzcargo by the author from 1996, in which a freight container was transformed into a translocal cinema in Namibia.
Through the journey to Congo, a group of media artists, a psychotherapist, a theater dramaturg, a filmmaker and a philosopher intend to explore the political, technological and psycho-geographic borders. By artistic interventions with locals, we want to interfere with relational string figures as part of the new Earth Politics. They are focusing on the displaced consumption of resources which are hard-fought and guarantee prosperity in the global north. The so-called ghost acreages are repressed and justified as part of a civilizational mission. With this trip, we want to confront our self-lies with the ones of our hosts. We want to confront ourselves with the foreign, the dark and the displaced ghosts within ourselves. In the presentation at the #IFM2022 Conference, the platform DE\GLOBALIZE will be problematized itself as an example of epistemic violence for the ethnographic memory of (Western) knowledge.
We are not the missionaries but the perplexed travellers. In our search movement, we are dealing with psychoanalysis, video, performance and trance. As disoriented white men we try the reversal of Black Skin and White Mask by Franz Fanon without blackfacing. We will not only care about the sensitivity of our skin but that of our g/hosts and the one of mother earth.
Inner Congo
(2023)
This research-creation project, part of the DE\GLOBALIZE artistic research cycle presented at the #IFM2022 Conference, investigates the complexities of Congo violence, care, and colonialism. Drawing on Michel Serres' metaphor of the great estuaries, the study explores the topology of interactive documentaries, blending theory, emotion, and personal experiences. Accessible through the interactive web documentation at http://deglobalize.com, the platform offers a media-archaeological archive for speculative ethnography, enabling the forensic processing of single documents in line with actor-network theory.
Seismic data processing relies on multiples attenuation to improve inversion and interpretation. Radon-based algorithms are often used for multiples and primaries discrimination. Deep learning, based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has shown encouraging applications for demultiple that could mitigate Radon-based challenges. In this work, we investigate new strategies to train a CNN for multiples removal based on different loss functions. We propose combined primaries and multiples labels in the loss for training a CNN to predict primaries, multiples, or both simultaneously. Moreover, we investigate two distinctive training methods for all the strategies: UNet based on minimum absolute error (L1) training, and adversarial training (GAN-UNet). We test the trained models with the different strategies and methods on 400 synthetic data. We found that training to predict multiples, including the primaries …
An important step in seismic data processing to improve inversion and interpretation is multiples attenuation. Radon-based algorithms are often used for discriminating primaries and multiples. Recently, deep learning (DL), based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has shown promising results in demultiple that could mitigate the challenges of Radon-based methods. In this work, we investigate new different strategies to train a CNN for multiples removal based on different loss functions. We propose combined primaries and multiples labels in the loss for training a CNN to predict primaries, multiples, or both simultaneously. We evaluate the performance of the CNNs trained with the different strategies on 400 clean and noisy synthetic data, considering 3 metrics. We found that training a CNN to predict the multiples and then subtracting them from the input image is the most effective strategy for demultiple. Furthermore, including the primaries labels as a constraint during the training of multiples prediction improves the results. Finally, we test the strategies on a field dataset. The CNNs trained with different strategies report competitive results on real data compared with Radon demultiple. As a result, effectively trained CNN models can potentially replace Radon-based demultiple in existing workflows.
Seismic data has often missing traces due to technical acquisition or economical constraints. A compete dataset is crucial in several processing and inversion techniques. Deep learning algorithms, based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have shown alternative solutions that overcome limitation of traditional interpolation methods e.g. data regularity, linearity assumption, etc. There are two different paradigms of CNN methods for seismic interpolation. The first one, so-called deep prior interpolation (DPI), trains a CNN to map random noise to a complete seismic image using only the decimated image itself. The second one, referred as standard deep learning method, trains a CNN to map a decimated seismic image into a complete one using a dataset of complete and artificially decimated images. Within this research, we systematically compare the performance of both methods for different quantities of regular and irregular missing traces using 4 datasets. We evaluate the results of both methods using 5 well-known metrics. We found that DPI method performs better than the standard method if the percentage of missing traces is low (10%) and otherwise if the level of decimation is high (50%).
In this work, we explore three deep learning algorithms apply to seismic interpolation: deep prior image (DPI), standard, and generative adversarial networks (GAN). The standard and GAN approaches rely on a dataset of complete and decimated seismic images for the training process, while the DPI method learns from a decimated image itself, without training images. We carry out two main experiments, considering 10%, 30%, and 50% of regular and irregular decimation. The first tests the optimal situation for the GAN and the standard approaches, where training and testing images are from the same dataset. The second tests the ability of GAN and standard methods to learn simultaneously from three datasets, and generalize to a fourth dataset not used during training. The standard method provides the best results in the first experiment, when the training distribution is similar to the testing one. In this situation, the DPI approach reports the second best results. In the second experiment, the standard method shows the ability to learn simultaneously and effectively three data distributions for the regular case. In the irregular case, the DPI approach is more effective. The GAN approach is the less effective of the three deep learning methods in both experiments.

Rectifiersare vital electronic circuits for signal and power conversion in various smart sensor applications. The ability to process low input voltage levels, for example, from vibrational energy harvesters is a major challenge with existing passive rectifiers in printed electronics, stemming mainly from the built-in potential of the diode's p-njunction. To address this problem, in this work, we design, fabricate, and characterize an inkjet-printed full-wave rectifier using diode-connected electrolyte-gated thin-film transistors (EGTs). Using both experimental and simulation approaches, we investigate how the rectifier can benefit from the near-zero threshold voltage of transistors, which can be enabled by proper channel geometry setting in EGT technology. The presented circuit can be operated at 1-V input voltage, featuring a remarkably small voltage loss of 140 mV and a cutoff frequency of ~300 Hz. Below the cutoff frequency, more than 2.6-μW dc power is obtained over the load resistances ranging from 5 to 20 kQ. Furthermore, experiments show that the circuit can work with an input amplitude down to 500 mV. This feature makes the presented design highly suitable for a variety of energy-harvesting applications.
Electrolyte-gated, printed field-effect transistors exhibit high charge carrier densities in the channel and thus high on-currents at low operating voltages, allowing for the low-power operation of such devices. This behavior is due to the high area-specific capacitance of the device, in which the electrolyte takes the role of the dielectric layer of classical architectures. In this paper, we investigate intrinsic double-layer capacitances of ink-jet printed electrolyte-gated inorganic field-effect transistors in both in-plane and top-gate architectures by means of voltage-dependent impedance spectroscopy. By comparison with deembedding structures, we separate the intrinsic properties of the double-layer capacitance at the transistor channel from parasitic effects and deduce accurate estimates for the double-layer capacitance based on an equivalent circuit fitting. Based on these results, we have performed simulations of the electrolyte cutoff frequency as a function of electrolyte and gate resistances, showing that the top-gate architecture has the potential to reach the kilohertz regime with proper optimization of materials and printing process. Our findings additionally enable accurate modeling of the frequency-dependent capacitance of electrolyte/ion gel-gated devices as required in the small-signal analysis in the circuit simulation.
Printed electronics can benefit from the deployment of electrolytesas gate insulators, which enables a high gate capacitance per unit area (1–10 μFcm−2) due to the formation of electrical double layers (EDLs). Consequently, electrolyte-gated field-effect transistors (EGFETs) attain high-charge carrier densities already in the subvoltage regime, allowing for low-voltage operation of circuits and systems. This article presents a systematic study of lumped terminal capacitances of printed electrolyte-gated transistors under various dc bias conditions. We perform voltage-dependent impedancemeasurements and separate extrinsic components from the lumped terminal capacitance.
The proposed Meyer-like capacitance model, which also accounts for the nonquasi-static (NQS) effect, agrees well with experimental data. Finally, to verify the model, we implement it in Verilog-A and simulate the transient response of an inverter and a ring oscillator circuit. Simulation results are in good agreement with the measurement data of fabricated devices.
The manufacturing of conventional electronics has become a highly complicated process, which requires intensive investment. In this context, printed electronics keeps attracting attention from both academia and industry. The primary reason is the simplification of the manufacturing process via additive printing technology such as ink-jet printing. Consequently, advantages are realized such as on-demand fabrication, minimal material waste and versatile choice of substrate materials. Central to the development of printed electronic circuits are printed transistors. Recently, metal oxide semiconductors such as indium oxide have become promising materials for the fabrication of printed transistors due to their high charge mobility. Furthermore, electrolyte-gating also provides benefits such as the low-voltage operation in sub-1 V regime due to the large gate capacitance provided by electrical double layers. This opens new possibilities to fabricate printed devices and circuits for niche applications.
To facilitate the design and fabrication of printed circuits, the development of compact models is necessary. However, most of the current works have focused on the study of the static behavior of transistors, while the in-depth understanding of other characteristics such as the dynamic or noise behavior is missing. To this end, the purpose of this work is the comprehensive study on capacitance and noise properties of inkjet-printed electrolyte-gated thin-film transistors (EGT) based on indium oxide semiconductors. Proper modeling approaches are also proposed to capture accurately the electrical behaviour, which can be further utilized to enable advanced analysis of digital, analog and mixed-signal circuits.
In this work, the capacitance of EGTs is characterized using voltage-dependent impedance spectroscopy. Intrinsic and extrinsic effects are carefully separated by using de-embedding test structures. Also, a dedicated equivalent circuit model is established to offer accurate simulations of the measured frequency response of the gate impedance. Based on that, it is revealed that top-gated EGTs have the potential to reach operation frequency in the kHz regime with proper optimizations of materials and printing process. Furthermore, a Meyer-like model is proposed to accurately capture the capacitance-voltage characteristics of the lumped terminal capacitance. Both parasitic and nonquasi-static effects are considered. This further enables the AC and transient analysis of complex circuits in circuit simulators.
Following, the study of noise properties in the field of printed electronics is conducted. Low-frequency noise of EGTs is characterized using a reliable experimental setup. By examining measured noise spectra of the drain current at various gate voltages, the number fluctuation with correlated mobility fluctuation has been determined as the primary noise mechanism. Based on that, normalized flat-band voltage noise can be determined as the key performance metrics, which is only 1.08 × 10−7 V^2 µm^2, significantly lower in comparison with other thin-film technologies, which are based on dielectric gating and semiconductors such as IZO and IGZO. A plausible reason could be the large gate capacitance offered by the electrical double layers. This renders EGT technology useful for low-noise and sensitive applications such as sensor periphery circuits.
Last but not least, various circuit designs based on EGT technology are proposed, including basic digital circuits such as inverters and ring oscillators. Their performance metrics such as the propagation delay and power consumption are extensively characterized. Also, the first design of a printed full-wave rectifier is presented by using diode-connected EGTs, which features near-zero threshold voltage. As a consequence, the presented rectifier can effectively process input voltage with a small amplitude of 100 mV and a cut-off frequency of 300 Hz, which is particularly attractive for the application domain of energy harvesting. Additionally, the previously established capacitance models are verified on those circuits, which provide a satisfactory agreement between the simulation and measurement data.
Cellular phone antennas are generally designed to have radiation patterns that are as omnidirectional as possible. Omnidirectional antennas allow a phone’s radio to work well for many orientations of the phone with respect to the cellular base station. Recent studies, however, are generating uncertainty about the health effects of prolonged exposure to electromagnetic (EM) radiation from cellular phones. In this paper, an antenna array is designed primarily to minimize users’ exposure to EM radiation. The antenna comprises a beamforming 4 by 3 array of microstrip patch antennas that is controlled by an accelerometer-only inertial navigation system. The proposed design reduces radiated power directed toward the user to below 10% of the total in the worst case.

The iSign project started in 2000 as a web-based laboratory setting for students of electrical engineering. In the meantime it has broadened into a heterogeneous learning environment offering learning material, adaptive user settings and access to a simulation tool. All these offerings can be accessed via web and wireless by different clients, such as PCs, PDAs and mobile phones. User adaptive systems offer unique and personalised environment for every learner and therefore are a very important aspect of modern e-learning systems. The iSign project aims to personalise the content structure based on the learner's behaviour, content pattern, policies, and system environment. The second aspect of the recent research and development within this project is the generation of suitable content and presentation for different clients. This generation is based additionally on the user preferences in order to obtain the desirable presentation for a given device. New, valuable features are added to the mobile application, empowering the user not only to control the simulation process with his mobile device but also to input data, view the simulation's output and evaluate the results. Experiences with students have helped to improve functionality and look-and-feel whilst using the iSign system. Our goal is to provide unconstrained, continuous and personalised access to the laboratory settings and learning material everywhere and at anytime with different devices.
In 2000 the iSign project started as a virtual web-based laboratory for students of study program electrical engineering. Continuous development in the last years led to a heterogeneous learning environment offering learning material, adaptive user settings and access to a simulation tool. Access is available via web and wireless devices such as PCs, Laptops, PDAs, smartphones and mobile phones. Our attempt to adapt the content to the user's needs and the currently used device led us to a XML based data structure. This report shows our research results about content adaptation based on XML data. The two main aspects for that process are: the device capabilities and the adaptation methods using XML data.
This paper shows the results of the evaluation of two sets of mobile web design guidelines concerning mobile learning. The first set of guidelines is concerned with the usage of text on mobile device screens. The second set is concerned with the usage of images on mobile devices. The evaluation is performed by eye tracking (objective) as well as questionnaires and interviews (subjective) respectively.
Nowadays the processing power of mobile phones, smartphones and PDAs is increasing as well as the transmission bandwidth. Nevertheless there is still the need to reduce the content and the need of processing the data. We discuss the proposals and solutions for dynamic reduction of the transmitted content. For that, device specific properties are taken into account, as much as for the aim to reduce the need of processing power at the client side to be able to display the 3D (virtual reality) data. Therefore, well known technologies, e.g. data compression are combined with new developed ideas to reach the goal of adaptive content transmission. To achieve a device dependant reduction of processing power the data have to be preprocessed at the server side or the server even has to take over functionality of weak mobile devices.
Virtual-Reality-Darstellung elektromagnetischer Felder in dreidimensionalen Mikrowellenstrukturen
(2000)

Properties of higher-order surface acoustic wave modes in Al(1-x)Sc(x)N / sapphire structures
(2021)
In this work, surface acoustic wave (SAW) modes and their dependence on propagation directions in epitaxial Al0.68Sc0.32N(0001) films on Al2O3(0001) substrates were studied using numerical and experimental methods. In order to find optimal propagation directions for higher-order SAW modes, phase velocity dispersion branches of Al0.68Sc0.32N on Al2O3 with Pt mass loading were computed for the propagation directions <11-20> and <1-100> with respect to the substrate. Experimental investigations of phase velocities and electromechanical coupling were performed for comparison with the numerical results. Simulations carried out with the finite element method (FEM) and with a Green function approach allowed identification of each wave type, including Rayleigh, Sezawa and shear horizontal wave modes. For the propagation direction <1-100>, significantly increased wave guidance of the Sezawa mode compared to other directions was observed, resulting in enhanced electromechanical coupling (k2eff = 1.6 %) and phase velocity (vphase = 6 km/s). We demonstrated, that selecting wave propagation in <1-100> with high mass density electrodes results in increased electromechanical coupling without significant reduction in phase velocities for the Sezawa wave mode. An improved combination of metallization, Sc concentration x, and SAW propagation direction is suggested which exhibits both high electromechanical coupling (k2eff > 6 %) and high velocity (vphase = 5.5 km/s) for the Sezawa mode.
Partial substitution of Al atoms with Sc in wurtzite AlN crystals increases the piezoelectric constants. This leads to an increased electromechanical coupling, which is required for high bandwidths in piezo-acoustic filters. The crystal bonds in Ah-xScxN (AlScN) are softened as function of Sc atomic percentage x, leading to reduction of phase velocity in the film. Combining high Sc content AlScN films with high velocity substrates favors higher order guided surface acoustic wave (SAW) modes [1]. This study investigates higher order SAW modes in epitaxial AlScN on sapphire (Al2O3). Their dispersion for Pt metallized epitaxial AlScN films on Al2O3was computed for two different propagation directions. Computed phase velocity dispersion branches were experimentally verified by the characterization of fabricated SAW resonators. The results indicated four wave modes for the propagation direction (0°, 0°, 0°), featuring 3D polarized displacement fields. The sensitivity of the wave modes to the elastic constants of AlScN was investigated. It was shown that due to the 3D polarization of the waves, all elastic constants have an influence on the phase velocity and can be measured by suitable weighting functions in material constant extraction procedures.

A new approach of continuous phase QPSK Band-Pass modulation technique is being developed as enhancement to the QPSK modulation scheme for inductive data transmission (NFC). The modulation is based on Gaussian filtering of the phase transition from one state to the other rather than discontinuity in phase shift. The carrier is based on low frequency 115 KHz suitable for human body energy penetration due to its large skin-depth and lower inductive power attenuation. The complete signal processing is done digitally, external coil and capacitor is used for transceiver interface. The telemetry assists a smart pill swallowed by human being to trigger an actuator for drug delivery, record temperature, or perform diagnostic task inside the body. The smart pill includes 32bit processor, 16 Kbyte memory, temperature sensor, telemetry unit, and additional external peripheries. The complete system is designed, embedded in one SoC, and realized on ASIC with chip-area less than 14 mm2.
This paper presents an enhancement on QPSK modulation technique for near field communication (NFC). The enhanced modulation is based on continuous-phase QPSK with Gaussian filtering during switch from one phase to the other. Signal processing is done digitally with minimum external discrete components for air interface. The telemetry system can be used to assist a smart capsule (slave) that can be swallowed to establish data communication with external device (master). The system is designed, simulated, and emulated on FPGA showing 20 dB attenuation on side-lobes of the spectrum.
This review provides an overview on the production and analysis techniques of antioxidative peptides from food proteins. Regarding the production of antioxidative peptides, interlinked factors must be considered. Depending on the protein substrate, different peptidases or peptidase systems containing multiple enzymes as well as a specific production process must be chosen. The antioxidative peptides might be produced in a batch process including multiple pre- and post-treatments, besides the hydrolyses with peptidases itself. As an alternative, the potential of continuous production systems is discussed in this review. Furthermore, robust analyses tools are needed to gain control of the process and final product properties. With no standardized methodology available for antioxidative peptide evaluation, pros and cons of various strategies for peptide separation and antioxidative measurement are discussed in this review. Therefore, this review provides a roadmap for antioxidative peptide generation from various sources for research and development as well as for potential industrial use.
Economic growth is usually driven by improvements in productivity, economic efficiency, trade and innovation. Increasing efficiency means to produce larger output using the same amount of factors for production such as raw materials, labour, and capital. However, regardless of the driver, growth is often investment-hungry and it is not rare to find an economy with potential for growth but lacking locally available investment. In this scenario, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) can fill the gap between investment needed to promote economic growth and locally available investments.

Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) and variable air volume (VAV) systems are considered among the best heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC) thanks to their ability to provide cooling and heating in different thermal zones of the same building. As well as their ability to recover the heat rejected from spaces requiring cooling and reuse it to heat another space. Nevertheless, at the same time, these systems are considered one of the most energy-consuming systems in the building. So, it is crucial to well size the system according to the building’s cooling and heating needs and the indoor temperature fluctuations. This study aims to compare these two energy systems by conducting an energy model simulation of a real building under a semi-arid climate for cooling and heating periods. The developed building energy model (BEM) was validated and calibrated using measured and simulated indoor air temperature and energy consumption data. The study aims to evaluate the effect of these HVAC systems on energy consumption and the indoor thermal comfort of the building. The numerical model was based on the Energy Plus simulation engine. The approach used in this paper has allowed us to reach significant quantitative energy saving along with a high level of indoor thermal comfort by using the VRF system compared to the VAV system. The findings prove that the VRF system provides 46.18% of the annual total heating energy savings and 6.14% of the annual cooling and ventilation energy savings compared to the VAV system.
The variable refrigerant flow system is one of the best heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC) thanks to its ability to provide thermal comfort inside buildings. But, at the same time, these systems are considered one of the most energy-consuming systems in the building sector. Thus, it is crucial to well size the system according to the building’s cooling and heating needs and the indoor temperature fluctuations. Although many researchers have studied the optimization of the building energy performance considering heating or cooling needs, using air handling units, radiant floor heating, and direct expansion valves, few studies have considered the use of multi-objective optimization using only the thermostat setpoints of VRF systems for both cooling and heating needs. Thus, the main aim of this study is to conduct a sensitivity analysis and a multi-objective optimization strategy for a residential building containing a variable refrigerant flow system, to evaluate the effect of the building performance on energy consumption and improve the building energy efficiency. The numerical model was based on the EnergyPlus, jEPlus, and jEPlus+EA simulation engines. The approach used in this paper has allowed us to reach significant quantitative energy saving by varying the cooling and heating setpoints and scheduling scenarios. It should be stressed that this approach could be applied to several HVAC systems to reduce energy-building consumption.
To improve the building’s energy efficiency many parameters should be assessed considering the building envelope, energy loads, occupation, and HVAC systems. Fenestration is among the most important variables impacting residential building indoor temperatures. So, it is crucial to use the most optimal energy-efficient window glazing in buildings to reduce energy consumption and at the same time provide visual daylight comfort and thermal comfort. Many studies have focused on the improvement of building energy efficiency focusing on the building envelope or the heating, ventilation, and cooling systems. But just a few studies have focused on studying the effect of glazing on building energy consumption. Thus, this paper aims to study the influence of different glazing types on the building’s heating and cooling energy consumption. A real case study building located under a semi-arid climate was used. The building energy model has been conducted using the OpenStudio simulation engine. Building indoor temperature was calibrated using ASHRAE’s statistical indices. Then a comparative analysis was conducted using seven different types of windows including single, double, and triple glazing filled with air and argon. Tripleglazed and double-glazed windows with argon space offer 37% and 32% of annual energy savings. It should be stressed that the methodology developed in this paper could be useful for further studies to improve building energy efficiency using optimal window glazing.
This paper presents a framework for numerical building validation enhancement based on detailed building specifications from in-situ measurements and evidence-based validation assessment undertaken on a detached sustainable lightweight building in a semi-arid climate. The validation process has been undergone in a set of controlled experiments – a free-float period, and steady-state internal temperatures. The validation was conducted for a complete year with a 1-min time step for the hourly indoor temperature and the variable refrigerant flow (VRF) energy consumption. The initial baseline model was improved by three series of validation steps per three different field measurements including thermal transmittance, glazing thermal and optical properties, and airtightness. Then, the accurate and validated model was used for building energy efficiency assessment in 12 regions of Morocco. This study aims to assess the effect of accurate building characteristics values on the numerical model enhancement. The initial CV(RMSE) and NMBE have improved respectively from 14.58 % and −11.23 %–7.85 % and 1.86 % for the indoor temperature. Besides, from 31.17 % to 14.37 %–20.57 % and 9.77 % for energy consumption. The findings demonstrate that the lightweight construction with the use of a variable refrigerant flow system could be energy efficient in the southern regions of Morocco.
Energy efficiency and hygrothermal performance of hemp clay walls for Moroccan residential buildings
(2023)
Hemp-based building envelopes have gained significant popularity in developed countries, and now the trend of constructing houses with hemp-clay blocks is spreading to developing countries like Morocco. Investigating the hygrothermal behavior of such structures under actual climate conditions is essential for advancing and promoting this sustainable practice. This paper presents an in-depth experimental characterization of a commercial hemp-clay brick that has been exposed to the outdoor environment for four years, in addition to field measurements on a building scale demonstration prototype. Additionally, the study simulates 17 representative cities to assess the hygrothermal performance and energy-saving potential in each of Morocco's six existing climate zones, using the EnergyPlus engine. The experimental campaign's findings demonstrate excellent indoor air temperature and relative humidity regulation within the hemp-clay wall building, leading to satisfactory levels of thermal comfort within hemp-clay wall buildings. This is attributed to the material's good thermal conductivity and excellent moisture buffering capacity (found to be 0.31 W/mK and 2.25 g/m2%RH), respectively). The energy simulation findings also point to significant energy savings, with cooling and heating energy reductions ranging from 27.7% to 47.5% and 33.7% to 79.8%, respectively, as compared to traditional Moroccan buildings.
Advances in printed electronics (PE) enables new applications, particularly in ultra-low-cost domains. However, achieving high-throughput printing processes and manufacturing yield is one of the major challenges in the large-scale integration of PE technology. In this article, we present a programmable printed circuit based on an efficient printed lookup table (pLUT) to address these challenges by combining the advantages of the high-throughput advanced printing and maskless point-of-use final configuration printing. We propose a novel pLUT design which is more efficient in PE realization compared to existing LUT designs. The proposed pLUT design is simulated, fabricated, and programmed as different logic functions with inkjet printed conductive ink to prove that it can realize digital circuit functionality with the use of programmability features. The measurements show that the fabricated LUT design is operable at 1 V.
Printed electronics (PE) enables disruptive applications in wearables, smart sensors, and healthcare since it provides mechanical flexibility, low cost, and on-demand fabrication. The progress in PE raises trust issues in the supply chain and vulnerability to reverse engineering (RE) attacks. Recently, RE attacks on PE circuits have been successfully performed, pointing out the need for countermeasures against RE, such as camouflaging. In this article, we propose a printed camouflaged logic cell that can be inserted into PE circuits to thwart RE. The proposed cell is based on three components achieved by changing the fabrication process that exploits the additive manufacturing feature of PE. These components are optically look-alike, while their electrical behaviors are different, functioning as a transistor, short, and open. The properties of the proposed cell and standard PE cells are compared in terms of voltage swing, delay, power consumption, and area. Moreover, the proposed camouflaged cell is fabricated and characterized to prove its functionality. Furthermore, numerous camouflaged components are fabricated, and their (in)distinguishability is assessed to validate their optical similarities based on the recent RE attacks on PE. The results show that the proposed cell is a promising candidate to be utilized in camouflaging PE circuits with negligible overhead.
Printed electronics (PE) is a fast-growing field with promising applications in wearables, smart sensors, and smart cards, since it provides mechanical flexibility, and low-cost, on-demand, and customizable fabrication. To secure the operation of these applications, true random number generators (TRNGs) are required to generate unpredictable bits for cryptographic functions and padding. However, since the additive fabrication process of the PE circuits results in high intrinsic variations due to the random dispersion of the printed inks on the substrate, constructing a printed TRNG is challenging. In this article, we exploit the additive customizable fabrication feature of inkjet printing to design a TRNG based on electrolyte-gated field-effect transistors (EGFETs). We also propose a printed resistor tuning flow for the TRNG circuit to mitigate the overall process variation of the TRNG so that the generated bits are mostly based on the random noise in the circuit, providing a true random behavior. The simulation results show that the overall process variation of the TRNGs is mitigated by 110 times, and the generated bitstream of the tuned TRNGs passes the National Institute of Standards and Technology - Statistical Test Suite. For the proof of concept, the proposed TRNG circuit was fabricated and tuned. The characterization results of the tuned TRNGs prove that the TRNGs generate random bitstreams at the supply voltage of down to 0.5 V. Hence, the proposed TRNG design is suitable to secure low-power applications in this domain.
Printed electronics (PE) circuits have several advantages over silicon counterparts for the applications where mechanical flexibility, extremely low-cost, large area, and custom fabrication are required. The custom (personalized) fabrication is a key feature of this technology, enabling customization per application, even in small quantities due to low-cost printing compared with lithography. However, the personalized and on-demand fabrication, the non-standard circuit design, and the limited number of printing layers with larger geometries compared with traditional silicon chip manufacturing open doors for new and unique reverse engineering (RE) schemes for this technology. In this paper, we present a robust RE methodology based on supervised machine learning, starting from image acquisition all the way to netlist extraction. The results show that the proposed RE methodology can reverse engineer the PE circuits with very limited manual effort and is robust against non-standard circuit design, customized layouts, and high variations resulting from the inherent properties of PE manufacturing processes.
Printed Electronics (PE) is a promising technology that provides mechanical flexibility and low-cost fabrication. These features make PE the key enabler for emerging applications, such as smart sensors, wearables, and Internet of Things (IoTs). Since these applications need secure communication and/or authentication, it is vital to utilize security primitives for cryptographic key and identification. Physical Unclonable Functions (PUF) have been adopted widely to provide the secure keys. In this work, we present a weak PUF based on Electrolyte-gated FETs using inorganic inkjet printed electronics. A comprehensive analysis framework including Monte Carlo simulations based on real device measurements is developed to evaluate the proposed PE-PUF. Moreover, a multi-bit PE-PUF design is proposed to optimize area usage. The analysis results show that the PE-PUF has ideal uniqueness, good reliability, and can operates at low voltage which is critical for low-power PE applications. In addition, the proposed multi-bit PE-PUF reduces the area usage around 30%.
