An investigation is underway regarding the usefulness of altazimuth-mounting telescopes' incorporation of laser gyros for pointing and fiber gyros with extremely small random-walk coefficient for telescope inertial stabilization during tracking. A star tracker is expected to help stabilize long-term gyro bias. Gyro and telescope specifications have been derived by means of computer simulations and systems analyses.
A polarization mode dispersion measurement set-up based on a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer was realized. Measurements were carried out on short high-birefringent fibers and on long standard telecommunication single-mode fibers. In order to ensure high accurate results, special emphasis was placed on the evaluation of the interference pattern. The procedure will be described in detail and practical measurement results will be presented.
The prototype of an optical gyro encoder (OGE) has been successfully tested on the NTT telescope in September '93. The OGE consists of a ring laser gyro and a fiber optic gyro with their input axis parallel. The gyro outptu signals are compensated for earth rotation and misalignment and are subsequently integrated to get the angles. An adaptive digital control loop locks the fiber optic gyro to the laser gyro data. Thus the combined output has the precision of the laser gyro and the low noise of the fiber optic gyro. Specifically, the bias stability is better than 2 X 10-3 deg/h, the scale factor accuracy better than 1 ppm, the random walk coefficient better than 5 X 10-4 deg/(root)h and the resolution better than 3 X 10-4 arcsec. The OGE has been mounted in the altitude and in the azimuthy axis of the telescope. The data were compared with the telescope disk encoder data. The test data show that the pointing accuracy is about 1 arcsec and the tracking accuracy 0.1 arcsec over a time of 30 seconds. This accuracy is sufficient for the very large telescope, for instance.
This paper treats the Brillouin backscattering in a single mode optical fiber and its implications on the Brillouin Ring Laser Gyroscope (BRLG). The BRLG consists of a fiber ring cavity in which stimulated Brillouin scattering is induced and provides two resonant counterpropagating backscattered waves. If this cavity is rotating around its axis, the backscattered waves get different resonant frequencies because of the Sagnac effect. The frequency difference is proportional to the rotation rate (Omega) by inducing a frequency offset between the counterpropagating waves. Some reported Brillouin spectra exhibit several peaks, which means that one pump wave provides at least two backscattered waves with distinguishable frequencies. In order to understand this multi-backscattering and to take advantage of it for the BRLG, we present results of a simulation of the Brillouin backscattering in a single mode optical fiber.
Die Geschäftsleitung und Führungskräfte von Eller Repro+Druck beschlossen im Juli 1994 die Teilnahme am damls noch neuen EU-Öko-Audit. Die Durchführung des Audits ist für 1996 geplant. Zwei Diplomanden der FH Offenburg wurde die Möglichkeit gegeben, als externe Berater für Eller Repro+Druck ihre Diplomarbeit über die Vorbereitung zum Öko-Audit zu schreiben. Der Betrieb (170 Mitarbeiter) verfügt über elektronische Bildverarbeitung auf Scitex- und Mac-Schiene, derzeit noch konventionelle Plattenkopie und -entwicklung, fünf Offsetrotationen sowie Weiterverarbeitung mit Sammelheftern und Falzmaschinen. Der Referent berichtet über die Erfahrungen, die sein Unternehmen bis zum Herbst 1995 mit der Vorbereitung zum Öko-Audit gemacht hat, und gibt Praxistips. Zusammen mit den Beratern wurden eine Aufnahme der betrieblichen Situation durchgeführt, Maßnahmen geplant und zum Teil durchgeführt.
Im Institut für angewandte Forschung (IAF) der FH Offenburg wird derzeit eine Chipkarte entwickelt, mit der Temperaturzeitreihen über längere Zeiträume aufgezeichnet werden können. Die zur Datenerfassung erforderlichen Systemkomponenten sind auf nur einem Halbleiterchip zusammengefaßt, wodurch sich bei großen Produktionsstückzahlen ein sehr niedriger Herstellpreis erzielen läßt. Die 'Thermologger' genannte Chipkarte kann zudem mit Standard-Chipkartenlesern und einer dedizierten Software auf jedem PC konfiguriert, gelesen und ausgewertet werden.
Bei modernen Lokomotiven mit Drehstrom-Asynchronmotoren und mit bis zu 7 Megawatt Leistung, neigt das Antriebssystem bei nicht ausreichendem Kraftschluß zwischen Treibradsatz und Schiene zum 'Durchdrehen'. Bei diesem Vorgang wird nahezu die gesamte Energie zur Beschleunigung des Radsatzes eingesetzt, was zu mechanischen Schäden an den Rädern und Schienen führen kann. Beim Bremsen ist dies ähnlich, die Räder gleiten auf den Schienen, wenn zuviel Bremskraft gefordert wird. Die übertragbaren Zug- und Bremskräfte werden primär durch die Radsatzlast und den Kraftschlußbeiwert bestimmt, wobei der Verlauf der Kraftschlußkennlinie als Funktion des Schlupfs oder der Schlupfgeschwindigkeit im wesentlichen durch den Schienenzustand (naß oder trocken) bestimmt wird. Eine hohe Kraftschlußnutzung wird dann erreicht, wenn man laufend denjenigen Schlupfwert einstellt, der zum jeweiligen Kraftschlußmaximum führt. Hierzu werden in der Praxis verschiedene Konzepte und Methoden eingesetzt, es ist bis heute jedoch keine Methode bekannt, den Verlauf der Kraftschlußkennlinie meßtechnisch laufend zu erfassen oder rechentechnisch zu bestimmen. Bei der hier vorgestellten Vorgehensweise wurde der mechanische Antrieb zusammen mit dem Rad-Schiene-Kontakt als Zustandsraumodell beschrieben. Die Betrachtungen beruhen dann auf einer Frequenzganguntersuchung des eingeführten linearen Zustandsraummodells. Aufgrund der Linearisierung gelten die Ergebnisse der Frequenzgangsberechnung nur für den jeweiligen Betriebspunkt der Kraftschlußkennlinie, also für eine bestimmte Steigung. Variiert man nun die Steigung, so läßt sich der Einfluß der nichtlinearen Kraftschlußkennlinien ermitteln. Zur Messung von Frequenzgängen eignen sich insbesondere Verfahren der Orthogonalen Korrelation. Die technische Realisierung wird skizziert. Die Meßinformation ist dann die Basis für eine Regelung, die ein permanentes optimales Fahren im Kraftschlußmaximum zuläßt und zwar beim Beschleunigen und beim Bremsen. Das beschriebene Meß- und Regelungsverfahren ist derzeit in der Schweiz in der Betriebserprobung.
Die Verarbeitung analoger Signale durch digitale Techniken ist durch die enorme Leistungsfähigkeit der Prozessoren zwischenzeitlich zum Standard geworden. Eine hinreichende Genauigkeit der digitalen Verarbeitung kann durch Wahl der notwendigen Wortbreite relativ einfach bewerkstelligt werden, wobei der Aufwand mit zunehmender Wortbreite linear, teilweise auch quadratisch steigt. Zum Flaschenhals in der Verarbeitung wird aber häufig die Wandlung der analog vorliegenden Signale in digitale Signale, ebenso die Rückwandlung der digitalen Signale in analoge Spannungs- oder Stromverläufe. Der Aufwand für diese teils analogen, teils digitalen Systeme steigt oft exponentiell mit der geforderten Genauigkeit bzw. Auflösung der Systeme und erfordert in konventioneller Technik bei hoher Auflösung aufwendige Maßnahmen auf dem Chip. Oversampling- und Rauschfärbungs-Methoden sind in der Verarbeitung von Audio-Signalen schon seit langem probate Mittel, um die Auflösung mit moderatem Aufwand zu erhöhen. Derartige Techniken werden zwischenzeitlich auch gerne im Bereich der Antriebstechnik, wo die Anforderungen an die erforderliche Positioniergenauigkeit zunehmen, eingesetzt. Ziel des Vortrags ist eine leicht verständliche Einführung in die Themengebiete der Überabtastung und der Rauschfärbung und ihre Anwendung im Hinblick auf Rundungsvorgänge im digitalen Bereich, in D/A-Wandlern und A/D-Wandlern vom Delta-Sigma-Typ.
The importance of obtaining simultaneous particle size and concentration values has grown up with continuing discussion of the health effects, of internal combustion engine generated particulate emissions and in particular of Diesel soot emissions. In the present work an aerosol measurement system is described that delivers information about particle size and concentration directly from the undiluted exhaust gas.
Using three laser diodes of different wavelengths which form one parallel light beam, each spectral attenuation is analysed by a single detector and the particle diameter and concentration is evaluated by the use of the Mie theory and shown on-line at a frequency of 1 Hz. The system includes an optical long-path-cell (White principle) with an adjustable path length from 2.5 to 15 m, which allows the analysis within a broad concentration range.
On-line measurements of the particulate emissions in the hot, undiluted exhaust of Diesel engines are presented under stationary and transient engine’s load conditions. Mean particle diameters well below 100 nm are detected for modern Diesel engines. The measured particle concentration corresponds excellently with the traditional gravimetrical measurements of the diluted exhaust. Additionally, measurements of particle emissions (mostly condensed hydricarbons) from a two-stroke engine are presented and discussed.
Ein neuer Ansatz wurde für mobile Roboter zur gleichzeitigen 3D (Drei-Dimensionaler) Kartierung und Lokalisierung vorgestellt. Die Grundlage bilden attributierte Flächenmodelle, die z.B. von segmentierten Laserscanner-Tiefenbildern stammen. Zur Optimierung der Gesamtähnlichkeit zwischen Flächenmodellen unter Zeitbedingungen werden mehrere Verfahren (Beschränkte Baumsuche, Iterative Verfeinerung, Evolutionäralgorithmus) kombiniert. Es wird speziell anhand der Ähnlichkeitsmaße gezeigt, wie das Wissen über die Lage stufenweise generiert und verwendet wird. Erste Messungen an realen segmentierten Tiefenbildfolgen zeigen, dass das Verfahren unbekannte übelappung, Verdeckung und Segmentierungsfehler toleriert sowie Echtzeitpotenzial besitzt.
Nowadays the processing power of mobile phones, smartphones and PDAs is increasing as well as the transmission bandwidth. Nevertheless there is still the need to reduce the content and the need of processing the data. We discuss the proposals and solutions for dynamic reduction of the transmitted content. For that, device specific properties are taken into account, as much as for the aim to reduce the need of processing power at the client side to be able to display the 3D (virtual reality) data. Therefore, well known technologies, e.g. data compression are combined with new developed ideas to reach the goal of adaptive content transmission. To achieve a device dependant reduction of processing power the data have to be preprocessed at the server side or the server even has to take over functionality of weak mobile devices.
The iSign project started in 2000 as a web-based laboratory setting for students of electrical engineering. In the meantime it has broadened into a heterogeneous learning environment offering learning material, adaptive user settings and access to a simulation tool. All these offerings can be accessed via web and wireless by different clients, such as PCs, PDAs and mobile phones. User adaptive systems offer unique and personalised environment for every learner and therefore are a very important aspect of modern e-learning systems. The iSign project aims to personalise the content structure based on the learner's behaviour, content pattern, policies, and system environment. The second aspect of the recent research and development within this project is the generation of suitable content and presentation for different clients. This generation is based additionally on the user preferences in order to obtain the desirable presentation for a given device. New, valuable features are added to the mobile application, empowering the user not only to control the simulation process with his mobile device but also to input data, view the simulation's output and evaluate the results. Experiences with students have helped to improve functionality and look-and-feel whilst using the iSign system. Our goal is to provide unconstrained, continuous and personalised access to the laboratory settings and learning material everywhere and at anytime with different devices.
The establishment of a software tool chain among requirements management tools, black box test approach tool CTE XL and RTRT is proposed in this paper. The use of Classification Tree Method ensures the reduction in the number of test cases and promises an increased efficiency when testing. The traceability of test cases and requirements is guaranteed by the established software tool chain with well defined interfaces. As the experimental results point out, a better test coverage can be achieved. Future work can be based on automatic generation of init and expected values for testing, requiring no interference from a software quality engineer. In conclusion, the tasks that need to be performed by the software quality engineers is to define the black box test cases using CTM/CTE XL, import the requirements from the requirements management tools, import the XML file to test tool RTRT. By giving the initial and expected values the testing can be performed in a comfortable way.
Das fortwährende Streben nach Steigerung der Genauigkeit und Effizienz von industriellen Bearbeitungs- und Prüfprozessen führt bei elektrischen Antrieben zu immer höheren Forderungen an ihre dynamischen Eigenschaften. Hierbei kommt dem Stromregelkreis als dem am weitesten unterlagerten Regelkreis eines elektrischen Antriebs eine entscheidende Bedeutung zu. Mit zunehmender Dynamikerhöhung des Stromregelkreises treten jedoch aufgrund von Parameterunsicherheiten und von Messfehlem immer deutlicher Probleme der Regelkreisrobustheit und der Geräuschemission in den Vordergrund, die es oft nicht gestatten, die theoretisch erhaltenen Lösungen in vollem Umfang zu realisieren. Gegenüber der optimalen Lösung müssen dann Abstriche hinsichtlich der erreichbaren Dynamik gemacht werden. Wie diese Abstriche durch das Ausschöpfen verborgener Freiheitsgrade reduziert werden können, wird im vorliegenden Beitrag gezeigt. Als Lösungsansatz wird hierfür ein achsenunsymmetrischer Statorstromzustandsregler gewählt, der es erlaubt, in der d- und q-Achse eine unterschiedliche Dynamik einzustellen. Hierbei wird zunächst im Kapitel 2 ein kurzer Überblick über die Entwicklungsgeschichte und den Stand der Technik von pulsweitenmodulierten Stromregelverfahren für Drehstromantriebe in den zurückliegenden Jahrzehnten gegeben. Anschließend wird am Beispiel einer frequenzumrichtergespeisten Asynchronmaschine das zeitdiskrete Modell der Statorstromregelstrecke vorgestellt, das dem hier erläuterten Verfahren zugrunde liegt. Wegen des Zusammenhangs zwischen Dynamikerhöhung und Empfindlichkeitszunahme ist es naheliegend, die Dynamik des Statorstromregelkreises nur so weit zu steigern, wie es erforderlich ist. Diesbezüglich ist insbesondere zu gewährleisten, dass ein angefordertes Drehmoment möglichst schnellst eingeprägt wird. Die Änderungsgeschwindigkeit des Flusses spielt hingegen eine untergeordnetere Rolle. Demzufolge sollte die drehmomentbildende Statorstrom-q-Komponente in der Praxis eine höhere Dynamik aufweisen als die flussbildende Statorstrom-d-Komponente. Um hierbei die aufwändige reelle Rechnung so weit wie möglich zu vermeiden, wird der Reglerentwurf in zwei Schritten durchgeführt. Im ersten Schritt wird ein schiefsymmetrisches, komplex beschreibbares Regelgesetz entworfen, das zwar zu einer möglichst einfachen Darstellbarkeit des geschlossenen Statorstromregelkreises führt, das jedoch noch nicht die endgültige Dynamik zur Folge haben muss. Insbesondere muss nach Abschluss dieses ZwischenSchritts bereits eine vollständige Entkopplung der d- und der q-Komponente des Statorstromraumzeigers vollzogen sein. Im zweiten Schritt wird dann ein weiterer Regler entworfen, der auf der Grundlage des im ersten Schritt erhaltenen entkoppelten Systems jeder Stromkomponente eine separate Dynamik zuweisen kann. Die Verkettung beider Teilregler führt schließlich zum gesuchten Statorstromregler, der zum einen relativ einfach berechenbar ist und der zum anderen alle an ihn gestellten Dynamikanforderungen erfüllt. Im vierten Kapitel wird schließlich der Entwurf des achsenunsymmetrischen Statorstromzustandsreglers skizziert und die daraus hervorgehenden Regelalgorithmen vorgestellt. Die Leistungsfähigkeit des beschriebenen Zustandsreglers wird anhand von aufgenommenen Zeitverläufen eines Laborantriebs demonstriert, mit dem der Drehmomentverlauf von Verbrennungsmotoren nachgebildet wird.

A new electronic capsule with bidirectional communication system is being developed for multi-task application. The capsule is designed to be a platform for medical assistant application inside the body. The designed telemetry unit is a synchronous bidirectional communication block using continuous phase DQPSK of 115 kHz low carrier frequency for inductive data transmission suited for human body energy transfer. The communication system can assist the electronic pill to trigger an actuator for drug delivery, to record temperature, or to measure pH of the body. It consists additionally to a 32bit processor, memory, external peripheries, and detection facility. The complete system is designed to fit small-size mass medical application with low power consumption, size of 7x25mm. The system is designed, simulated and emulated on FPGA. A final layout of the complete chip design is still under progress.
A new, small, and optimized for low power processor core named SIRIUS has been developed, simulated, synthesized to a netlist and verified. From this netlist, containing only primitives like gates and flip-flops, a mapping to an ASIC - or FPGA technology can easily be done with existing synthesizer tools, allowing very complex SOC designs with several blocks. Emulation via FPGA can be done on already simple setups and cheap hardware because of the small core size. The performance is estimated 50 MIPS on Cyclone II FPGA and about 100 MIPS on a 0.35 CMOS 5M2P technology with 4197 primitives used for the core, including a 16 x 16 multiplier. An example design of the ASIC for an electronic ePille device currently in development is shown.
To provide proper solutions to the problem of device dependant content delivery, a fine categorization of the application target devices is needed. Earlier attempts provided two different presentations for desktop and mobile platforms. The mobile platform presentation was divided into three categories, based on a general classification (PDA, Smartphone or mobile phone). In order to improve the on mobile device presentation a finer categorization is introduced. In this paper, our focus is to clarify the concept of this more flexible presentation module, in which the delivered content depends on the efficiency of the device based on a selected set of capabilities.

The complete system is designed to fit small-size mass medical application with low power consumption, size of 7x25 mm. The system is designed, simulated, emulated on FPGA, and routed in AMIS Technology.
A new approach of continuous phase QPSK Band-Pass modulation technique is being developed as enhancement to the QPSK modulation scheme for inductive data transmission (NFC). The modulation is based on Gaussian filtering of the phase transition from one state to the other rather than discontinuity in phase shift. The carrier is based on low frequency 115 KHz suitable for human body energy penetration due to its large skin-depth and lower inductive power attenuation. The complete signal processing is done digitally, external coil and capacitor is used for transceiver interface. The telemetry assists a smart pill swallowed by human being to trigger an actuator for drug delivery, record temperature, or perform diagnostic task inside the body. The smart pill includes 32bit processor, 16 Kbyte memory, temperature sensor, telemetry unit, and additional external peripheries. The complete system is designed, embedded in one SoC, and realized on ASIC with chip-area less than 14 mm<sup>2</sup>.
A theoretical description is given for the propagation of surface acoustic wave pulses in anisotropic elastic media subject to the influence of nonlinearity. On the basis of nonlinear elasticity theory, an evolution equation is presented for the surface slope or the longitudinal surface velocity associated with an acoustic pulse. It contains a non-local nonlinearity, characterized by a kernel that strongly varies from one propagation geometry to another due to the anisotropy of the substrate. It governs pulse shape evolution in homogeneous halfspaces and the shapes of solitary surface pulses that exist in coated substrates. The theory describing nonlinear Rayleigh-type surface acoustic waves is extended in a straightforward way to surface waves that are localized at a one-dimensional acoustic waveguide like elastic wedges.
In the recent two years the authors have developed a light weight and low power flight control system for model helicopters consisting of an attitude and heading reference system (AHRS), a navigator (INS) augmented with GPS, barometric altitude sensor and a magnetic sensor, a flight control computer (FCC) and bidirectional ground data links. The system has been tested on a commercial stunt flight model helicopter. The AHRS consists of three MEMS-gyros, two 2-axis MEMS accelerometers and a microcontroller performing the required sensor compensation and data processing to generate attitude angles and true rate and acceleration data of the flying platform. The heading angle is augmented with a 2-axis magnetic sensor. The AHRS is stunt flight capable. The INS integrates the acceleration data to obtain velocity and position data. All data are calculated in both the helicopter and the local earth frame with 50 Hz rate. The algorithm is augmented with GPS data for the lateral movement and with a barometric altitude sensor for the vertical movement. The barometric data are compensated for air pressure changes due to the helicopter main rotor. The FCC contains a set of control loops in order to stabilize the helicopter in all axis and to perform commanded velocity and position tasks. The sampling rate for the control loops is again 50 Hz allowing flight control with high bandwidth. Various safety features are implemented in the software. The bidirectional data link is based on a 2.4 GHz Bluetooth Class I RF-link with a 115 kbaud data rate. A dipole antenna is used on the helicopter, an automatically tracking patch antenna is used on the ground. For commanded velocity flight a standard 35 MHz RF-link is used. For data sampling, monitoring and mode control a laptop is used on the ground. Several operating modes are implemented ranging from commanded velocity flight to simple automatic stunt flight according to predefined flight tracks. The model helicopter is an ALIGN TREX 600 with 3 kg flight mass and a brushless electric motor. The rotor diameter is 1.40 m. The helicopter is able to carry a payload which mass depends on the size of the installed LiPo-cells and the purpose of the flight mission. The system has been tested in quite a few flight tests and missions. The helicopter is controlled safely up to wind loads of at least 5 Beaufort - 6 Beaufort. Data and video captures will be presented. If permission is granted, a demonstration flight will be performed on the premises of the conference.
This paper presents an enhancement on QPSK modulation technique for near field communication (NFC). The enhanced modulation is based on continuous-phase QPSK with Gaussian filtering during switch from one phase to the other. Signal processing is done digitally with minimum external discrete components for air interface. The telemetry system can be used to assist a smart capsule (slave) that can be swallowed to establish data communication with external device (master). The system is designed, simulated, and emulated on FPGA showing 20 dB attenuation on side-lobes of the spectrum.
Innovative technologies and concepts will emerge as we move towards a more dynamic, service-based, market-driven infrastructure, where energy efficiency and savings can be facilitated by interactive distribution networks. A new generation of fully interactive Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) infrastructure has to be developed to support the optimal exploitation of the changing, complex business processes and to enable the efficient functioning of the deregulated energy market for the benefit of citizens and businesses. The architecture of such distributed system landscapes must be designed and validated, standards need to be created and widely supported, and comprehensive, reliable IT applications will need to be implemented. The collaboration between a smart house and a smart grid is a promising approach which, with the help of ICT can fully unleash the capabilities of the smart electricity network.
This paper discusses a technological solution to real-time road transportation optimization using a commercial multi-agent based system, LS/ATN, which has been proven through real-world deployment to reduce transportation costs for both small and large fleets in the full and part load business. Subsequent to describing the real-time optimization approach, we discuss how the platform is currently evolving to accept live data from vehicles in the fleet in order to improve optimization accuracy. A selection of the predominant pervasive technologies available today for enhancing intelligent route optimization is described.
The developed solution enables the presentation of animations and 3D virtual reality (VR) on mobile devices and is well suited for mobile learning, thus creating new possibilities in the area of e-learning worldwide. Difficult relations in physics as well as intricate experiments in optics can be visualised on mobile devices without need for a personal computer.
“Today’s network landscape consists of quite different network technologies, wide range of end-devices with large scale of capabilities and power, and immense quantity of information and data represented in different formats” [9]. A lot of efforts are being done in order to establish open, scalable and seamless integration of various technologies and content presentation for different devices including mobile considering individual situation of the end user. This is very difficult because various kinds of devices used by different users or in different times/parallel by the same user which is not predictable and have to be recognized by the system in order to know device capabilities. Not only the devices but also Content and User Interfaces are big issues because they could include different kinds of data format like text, image, audio, video, 3D Virtual Reality data and upcoming other formats. Language Learning Game (LLG) is such an example of a device independent application where different kinds of devices and data formats, as a content of a flashcard is used for a collaborative learning. The idea of this game is to create a short story in a foreign language by using mobile devices. The story is developed by a group of participants by exchanging sentences/data via a flashcard system. This way the participants can learn from each other by knowledge sharing without fear of making mistakes because the group members are anonymous. Moreover they do not need a constant support from a teacher.

Die Erweiterung des Plugins wird bereits erfolgreich in internen Projekten der Hochschule Offenburg eingesetzt und soll demn ̈achst ̈offentlich verf ̈ugbar sein.
The Institute of Applied Research Offenburg is working in the field of autonomous data loggers since many years. In collaboration with industry, a new RFID based active sensor data logger for continuous recording of temperature has been developed and is now manufactured in mass production. Compared to existing systems, an unusual large data memory is integrated, which can be used via a simplified file system in a flexible way. The system will be used to accompany and monitor temperature sensitive goods of high value. The transponder is the first member of a new class of logging devices, the smallest will be not larger than a 2 Euro-coin with a fully integrated ASIC frontend.
Termination of atrial flutter (AFL) is not possible in all AFL patients (P) with transesophageal left atrial pacing (TLAP) with undirected electrical pacing field (EPF) and high atrial pacing threshold. Purpose of the study was to evaluate bipo-lar transesophageal left atrial electrocardiography (TLAE) and TLAP with directed EPF for evaluation and termination of AFL with and without simultaneous transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
Methods: AFL P were analysed using either a TO electrode with one cylindrical (CE) and three or seven hemispherical electrodes (HE) or TEE electrode with four HE (Osypka, Rheinfelden, Germany). Burst TLAP cycle length was between 200msand 50ms.
Results: AFL cycle length was 233±30 ms with mean ventricular cycle length of 540±149 ms. AFL could be terminated by rapid bipolar TLAP with directed EPF using HE-HE and CE-HE with induction of atrial fibrillation (AF), induction of AF and spontaneous conversion to sinus rhythm and direct conversion to sinus rhythm. Directed EPF was simulated with finite element method.
Conclusions: AFL can be evaluated by bipolar TLAE. AFL can be terminated with rapid TLAP with directed EPF with and without simultaneous TEE. Bipolar TLAE with rapid TLAP is a safe, simple and useful method for evaluation and termination of AFL.
Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) with biventricular pacing (BV) is an established therapy for heart failure (HF) patients with interventricular conduction delay (IVCD). The aim of the study was to evaluate transesophageal IVCD and left ventricular (LV) pacing with directed electrical pacing field (EPF) in HF patients.
Methods: HF patients were analysed with bipolar transesophageal LV electrocardiogram recording and LV pacing with constant voltage stimulus output, 4 ms stimulus duration, distal cylindrical electrode (CE) and seven 6 mm hemispherical electrodes (HE) with 15 mm electrode distance (TO, Dr. Osypka, Rheinfelden, Germany).
Results: LV electrocardiogram recording with HE-HE and CE-HE evaluated a mean IVCD of 79.9 ± 36.7 ms. Directed EPF with CE-HE and HE-HE allowed LV VAT (n=12) and LV D00 pacing (n=5) with a mean effective capture output of 97.35 ± 6.64 V. In 15 responders with IVCD of 87 ± 33 ms arterial pulse pressure (PP) increased from 65 ± 24 mmHg to 79 ± 27 mmHg (p < 0.001). EPF was simulated with finite element method.
Conclusions: Transesophageal LV electrocardiography and directed EPF pacing with CE and HE allowed the evaluation of IVCD and PP to select patients for BV pacing.
This paper gives an overview of the implementation of an Active Noise Control system on the TMS320C6713 Digital Signal Processor from Texas Instruments in the Digital Signal Processing Lab at Hochschule Offenburg, Germany. This system is implemented considering some non-ideal environmental conditions on a real system instead of being limited to computer simulations. Changes over time on the physical acoustical path as well as reverberation and variation on the power of the reference signal can strongly degrade the performance of the system or even lead to instability. In order to try to minimize these effects, the Active Noise Control system was designed to support a fast and easy implementation and evaluation of different algorithms on the DSP in real-time. In Section 1 a brief introduction about active noise control system is given and in section 2 the basic algorithm is described. In section 3 the implementation of the system is described and in section 4 some final considerations are given.
In their famous work on prospect theory Kahneman and Tversky have presented a couple of examples where human decision making deviates from rational decision making as defined by decision theory. This paper describes the use of extended behavior networks to model human decision making in the sense of prospect theory. We show that the experimental findings of non-rational decision making described by Kahneman and Tversky can be reproduced using a slight variation of extended behavior networks.
Existing approaches solving multi-vehicle pickup and delivery problems with soft time windows typically use common benchmark sets to verify their performance. However, there is a gap from these benchmark sets to real world problems with respect to instance size and problem complexity. In this paper we show that a combination of existing approaches together with improved heuristics is able to deal with the instance sizes and complexity of real world problems. The cost savings potential of the heuristics is compared to human dispatching plans generated from the data of a European carrier.
Electrical velocimetry to optimize VV delay in biventricular VVIR and DDD pacing for heart failure

Introduction: VV delay (VVD) is the only parameter to hemodynamically optimize cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Electrical velocimetry (EV) has been established to monitor thoracic electrical conductivity and to calculate hemodynamic surrogate parameters. We compared the response of this method to hemodynamic parameter changes between CRT patients with sinus rhythm (SR) and patients with AF.
Methods: VVD was individualized in 17 CRT patients in SR (12m, 5f, 67.0±7.2yrs.) after echo AV delay optimization and in 11 CRT patients in AF (10m, 1f, 69.8±9.6yrs.) using the Aesculon Cardiovascular Monitor (Osypka Medical, Berlin, Germany). Serial 30s EV recordings were accomplished, decreasing the VVD stepwise by 10ms from +60ms to -60ms between right and left ventricular stimulus. Optimal VVD was determined by the maximum of at least two of the three averaged parameters stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO) and cardiac index (CI). The response of SV, CO and CI was tested comparing their values in optimal VVD and suboptimal VVD. Suboptimal VVD was defined by optimal VVD±20ms.
Results: In all 28 patients in SR and AF, EV recordings resulted in optimal VVD. Between suboptimal and optimal mean VVD of 18.6±30.8ms between left and right ventricular stimulus, SV increased by 7.2±6.8%, CO by 7.8±7.2% and CI by 10.0±13.3% (all p<0.02). In the SR group with VVD of 18.8± 29.6ms, SV increased by 4.6±2.9%, CO by 5.0±2.9% and CI by 4.9±2.9% (all p<0.02). In the AF group with VVD of 18.2±4.0ms, SV increased by 10.4±8.9%, CO by 11.3±9.5% and CI by 16.4±18.2% (all p<0.02). Significant differences were not found between optimal VVD in SR and AF patients.
Conclusion: EV is a feasible serial method to individualize VVD in DDD and VVIR pacing for heart failure. Its response to hemodynamic changes demonstrates the value of EV for VVD fine-tuning.
Home Care Applications and Ambient Assisted Living become increasingly attractive. This is caused as well by market pull, as the number of elderly people grows monotonously, as well as by technology push, as technological advances and attractive products pave the way to economically advantageous offerings. However, in real-life applications, a significant number of challenges remain. Those include seamless communication between products from different supplier, due to the lack of sufficiently standardized solutions, energy budgets, and scalability of solutions. This paper presents the experience from the InCASA project (Integrated Network for Completely Assisted Senior Citizen's Autonomy), where architectures for heterogeneous physical and logical communication flows are examined.
Semi-invasive electromechanical target interval to guide left ventricular electrode placement

In large aircrafts the cabling is very complex and often causes reliability problems. This is specially true for modern In-flight Entertainment (IFE) systems, where every passenger can select a preferred movie, play computer games or be able to communicate with other travellers. Due to EMC problems, wireless communication systems (WiFi etc.) didn't succeed in solving these problems. In this paper an innovative communication system is proposed which perfectly supplements an aircraft IFE system. The key innovation of this system is to use structures that are essential parts of the airframe for data transfer, such as seat rails. Those rails consist of rectangular shapes and could easily be modified to fulfill the function of waveguides for microwaves. A waveguide as part of the seat rail would provide enormous benefits for aircrafts, such as a large bandwidth and consequently high data rates, no problems with EMC, unlimited flexibility of seat configuration, mechanical robustness with associated increase of reliability and a few additional advantages related to aircrafts such as reduction of weight and costs.
The concept of m-learning which differs from other forms of e-learning covers a wide range of possibilities opened up by the convergence of new mobile technologies, wireless communication structure and distance learning development. This process of converging has launched some new goals to support m-learning where heterogeneity of devices, their operating systems (Linux, Windows, Symbian, Android etc) and supported markup languages (WML, XHTML etc), adaptive content, preferences or characteristics of user have become some of the major problems to be solved. To facilitate the learning process even more and to establish literally anytime anywhere learning, learning material/content should be available to the user always even if the user is in offline. Multiple devices used by the same user should also be synchronized among themselves and with server to provide updated learning content and to give a freedom to the user to choose any device as per his/her convenience. In this paper software architecture has been proposed to solve these problems and has been implemented by using a multidimensional flashcard learning system which synchronizes among all the devices that are being used by the user.

A lot of efforts are being done in order to establish open, scalable and seamless integration of various technologies and content presentation for different devices including mobile considering individual situation of the end user. This is very difficult because various kinds of devices used by different users or in different times/parallel by the same user which are not predictable and have to be recognized by the system in order to identify device capabilities. Not only the devices but also Content and User Interfaces are big issues because they could include different kinds of data format like text, image, audio, video, 3D Virtual Reality data and other upcoming formats. A very suitable and useful example of the use of such a system is mobile learning because of the large amount of varying devices with significantly different features and functionalities. This is true not only to support different learners, e.g. all learners within one learning community, but also to support the same learner using different equipment parallel and/or at different times. Those applications may be significantly enhanced by including virtual reality content presentation. Whatever the purposes are, it is impossible to develop and adapt content for all kind of devices including mobiles individually due to different capabilities of the devices, cost issues and author‘s requirement. A solution should be found to enable the automation of the content adaptation process.
In previous work we [1] and other authors (e.g. [2]) have shown that agent-based systems are successful in optimizing delivery plans of single logistics companies and are meanwhile successfully productive in industry. In this paper we show that agent-based systems are particularly useful to also optimize transport across logistics companies. In intercompany optimization, privacy is of major importance between the otherwise competing companies. Some data has to be treated strictly private like the cost model or the constraint model. Other data like order information has to be shared. However, typically the amount of orders released to other companies has also to be limited. We show that our agent-based approach can be easily fine tuned to trade off privacy against the benefit of cooperation.
Die immer weitreichenderen Anwendungen des Smart Metering und des Smart Grid stellen immer höhere Anforderungen an Kommunikationstechnologien, die die Zielkonflikte aus Echtzeitfähige, Stabilität, Kosten und Energieeffizienz möglichst anwendungsoptimiert und auf einem immer höheren Niveau lösen. Insbesondere im Bereich der so genannten Primärkommunikation zwischen einem Sensor- oder Aktorknoten und einem Datensammler mit Gatewayfunktionalität konnten in den vergangenen Jahren wesentliche Fortschritte erzielt werden. Zu nennen sind hierbei insbesondere die Aktivitäten der ZigBee Alliance rund um den offenen Spezifikationsprozess des ZigBee Smart Energy Profiles (SEP) und der OMS-Gruppe beim ZVEI, die auf dem Wireless M-Bus nach EN13757-4 aufbauen, der sich seinerseits lebhaft und zielgerichtet weiter entwickelt. Der Beitrag diskutiert die vorhandenen Einschränkungen und die verfügbaren Lösungsansätze. Er illustriert diese anhand einiger öffentlich geförderter Projekte, an denen das Team des Autors beteiligt ist.
The following paper presents the results of a feasibility study about Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) based wireless sensors. The development of industrial wireless sensors leads to important demands for the wireless technologies like a low energy consumption and a resource saving simple protocol stack. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a rather new wireless standard which will completely fulfill these fundamental requirements. A self-designed BLE sensor system has been used to explore the common applicability of BLE for wireless sensor systems. The evaluation results of various analyses with the BLE sensor system are now presented in this paper.
Experiences with a telecare platform integration of ZigBee sensors into a middleware platform

Capture threshold (CT) for transesophageal left atrial (LA) pacing (TLAP) and transesophageal left ventricular (LV) pacing (TLVP) with conventional cylindrical electrodes (CE) are higher than TLAP feeling threshold (FT). Purpose of the study was to evaluate focused TLAP CT and FT for supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) initiation and focused TLVP CT for cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) simulation.
Methods: SVT initiation in patients (P) with palpitations (n=49, age 47 ± 17 years) was analysed during spontaneous rhythm and during focused bipolar TLAP with atrial constant current stimulus output, distal CE and three or seven 6 mm hemispherical electrodes (HE) (TO, Osypka AG, Rheinfelden, Germany). CRT simulation in heart failure P (n=75, age 62 ± 11 years) was evaluated by focused bipolar TLAP and/or TLVP with ventricular constant voltage stimulus output and different pacing mode.
Results: Focused electrical pacing field between CE and HE (n=28) allowed low threshold TLAP with 8.0 ± 2.6 mA CT at 9.9 ms stimulus duration (SD) which was lower than 9.2 ± 4.5 mA FT at 9.9 ms SD. Focused electrical pacing field between HE and HE (n=21) allowed low threshold TLAP with 8.1 ± 2.2 mA CT at 9.9 ms SD which was lower than 9.8 ± 5.0 mA FT at 9.9 ms SD. SVT initiation by programmed AAI TLAP was possible in 23 P and not possible in 26 P. CRT simulation was evaluated with TLAP and TLVP with VAT, D00 and V00 pacing mode and 95.5 ± 10.9 V TLVP CT at 4.0 ms SD.
Conclusions: Programmed focused AAI TLAP allowed initiation of SVT with very low CT and high FT and focused electrical pacing field between CE-HE and HE-HE.CRT simulation with focused TLAP and/or TLVP with VAT, D00 and V00 pacing mode may be a useful technique to detect responders to CRT.
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with biventricular (BV) pacing is an established therapy in approximately two-thirds of symptomatic heart failure (HF) patients (P) with left bundle branch block (LBBB). The aim of this study was to evaluate left atrial (LA) conduction delay (LACD) and left ventricular (LV) conduction delay (LVCD) using pre-implantational transesophageal electrocardiography (ECG) in sinus rhythm (SR) CRT responder (R) and non-responder (NR).
Methods: SR HF P (n=52, age 63.6±10.4 years; 6 females, 46 males) with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class 3.0±0.2, 24.4±7.1 % LV ejection fraction and 171.2±37.6 ms QRS duration (QRSD) were measured by bipolar filtered transesophageal LA and LV ECG recording with hemispherical electrodes (HE) TO catheter (Osypka AG, Rheinfelden, Germany). LACD was measured between onset of P-wave in the surface ECG and onset of LA deflection in the LA ECG. LVCD was measured between onset of QRS in the surface ECG and onset of LV deflection in the LV ECG.
Results: There were 78.8 % SR CRT R (n=41) with 171.2±36.9 ms QRSD, 73.3±25.7 ms LACD, 80.0±24.0 ms LVCD and 2.3±0.5 QRSD-LVCD-ratio. SR CRT R QRSD correlated with LACD (r=0.688, P<0.001) and LVCD (r=0.699, P<0.001). There were 21.2 % SR CRT NR (n=11) with 153.4±22.4 ms QRSD (P=0.133), 69.8±24.8 ms LACD (n=6, P=0.767), 54.2±31.0 ms LVCD (P<0.0046) and 3.9±2.5 QRSD-LVCD-ratio (P<0.001). SR CRT NR QRSD not corre-lated with IACD (r=-0.218, P=0.678) and IVCD (r=0.042, P=0.903). During a 22.8±21.3 month CRT follow-up, the CRT R NYHA class improved from 3.1±0.3 to 1.9±0.3 (P<0.001). In CRT NR, NYHA class not improved (2.9±0.4 to 2.9±0.2, P=1) during 11.2±9.8 months BV pacing.
Conclusions: Transesophageal LA and LV ECG with HE can be utilized to analyse LACD and LVCD in HF P. Pre-implantational LVCD and QRSD-LVCD-ratio may be additional useful parameters to improve P selection for SR CRT.
Currently, QRS width and bundle branch block morphology are used as electrocardiographic guideline criterias to selectheart failure (HF) patients with interventricular desynchronization in sinus rhythm (SR) for cardiac resynchronisationtherapy (CRT). Nevertheless, up to 30% of these patients do not benefit from implantation of CRT systems. Esophagealleft ventricular electrogram (LVE) enables semi-invasive measurement of interventricular conduction delays (IVCD)even in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). To routinely apply this method, a programmer based semi-invasiveautomatic quantification of IVCD should to be developed. Our aims were todefine interventricular conduction delaysby analyzing fractionated left ventricular (LV) deflections in the esophageal left ventricular electrogram of HF patientsin SR or AF.
In 66 HF patients (49 male,17 female, age 65 ± 10 years) a 5F TOslim electrode (Osypka AG, Germany) was perorallyapplied. Using BARD EP Lab, cardiac desynchronization was quantified as interval IVCD between onset of QRS insurface ECG and the investigator-determined onset of the left ventricular deflection in LVE. IVCD was compared withthe intervals between QRS onset and the first maximum (IVCDm1) and between QRS onset and the second maximum(IVCDm2) of the LV complex.
QRS of 173 ± 26 ms was linked with empirical IVCD of 75 ± 25 ms, at mean. First and second LV maximum could beascertained beyond doubt in all patients. Significant correlations of the p<0,01 level were found between IVCD and theIVCDm1 of 96 ± 28 ms as well as between IVCD and the IVCDm2 of 147 ± 31 ms, at mean. To standardize automatic measurement of interventricular conduction delays with respect to patients with fractionatedLV complexes, the first maximum of the LV deflection should be utilized to qualify the IVCD of HF patients with sinusrhythm and atrial fibrillation.
In this paper, a complete passive transponder device has been discussed which is meant to monitor leakage in silicone breast implants. The passive tag operates in the HF frequency range of 13.56MHz using RFID ISO 15693 standard. The complete system consists of the transponder, reader and a PC. This paper focusses on the development of such a state of the art passive RFID transponder to monitor the wellness of the silicone breast implants periodically in order to detect leakage in the same. Remote measurement of the physiology, so-called biotelemetry, is a key technology in the modern veterinary medicine. The usage of wireless implants has less impact on the behavior of animals than manual measurement methods and cause less disturbance than wired devices. But, common biotelemetry still uses proprietary communication and power concepts focused on small systems with one animal. Therefore, the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg is developing a low-cost RFID system called muTrans1, which is able to measure ECG, pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation and activity. The muTrans uses an own RFID sensor transponder and standardized commercial components and combines them to a scalable RFID system able to build-up RFID sensor networks with a nearly unlimited size.
During the last ten years the development of wireless sensing applications has become more and more attractive. A major reason for this trend is the large quantity of available wireless technologies. The progressing demand on wireless technologies is mainly driven through development from the industrial wireless sensors market. Especially requirements like low energy consumption, a resource saving simple protocol stack and short timing delays between different states of the wireless transceivers are very important for wireless sensors. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a rather new wireless standard in addition to the traditional Bluetooth standard (Basis rate and enhanced data rate, BR/EDR) [1]. The BLE will completely fulfill these fundamental requirements. First BLE transceiver chips and modules are available and have been tested and implemented in products. In this paper the performance analysis results of a BLE sensor system which is based on the TI transceiver CC2540F [5] will be presented. The results can be taken for further important investigations like lifetime calculations or BLE simulation models.
In the field of smart metering it can be observed that standardized protocol, like Wireless M-Bus or ZigBee, enjoy a rapidly increasing popularity. For the protocol implementations, however, up to now, mostly legacy engineering processes and technologies are used, and modern approaches such as model driven design processes or open software platform are disregarded. Therefore, within the WiMBex project, it shall be demonstrated that it is possible to develop a commercial class Wireless M-Bus implementation following state-of-the art design process and using TinyOS as an open source platform. This contribution describes the overall approach of the project, as well as the state and the first experiences of the current work in progress.
This paper analyzes the applicability of existing communication technology on the Smart Grid. In particular it evaluates how networks, e.g. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) and decentralized Virtual Private Network (VPN) can help set up an agent-based system. It is expected that applications on Smart Grid devices will become more powerful and be able to operate without a central control instance. We analyze which requirements agents and Smart Grid devices place on communication systems and validate promising approaches. The main focus is to create a logical overlay network that provides direct communication between network nodes. We provide a comparison of different approaches of P2P networks and mesh-VPNs. Finally the advantages of mesh-VPN for agent-based systems are worked out.

The communication is based on the wireless standard for Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) and enables high data rates, which are required for the in-flight entertainment system as an example of use.

Multi-phase management is crucial for performance and durability of electrochemical cells such as batteries and fuel cells. In this paper we present a generic framework for describing the two-dimensional spatiotemporal evolution of gaseous, liquid and solid phases, as well as their interdependence with interfacial (electro-)chemistry and microstructure in a continuum description. The modeling domain consists of up to seven layers (current collectors, channels, electrodes, separator/membrane), each of which can consist of an arbitrary number of bulk phases (gas, liquid, solid) and connecting interfaces (two-phase or multi-phase boundaries). Bulk and interfacial chemistry is described using global or elementary kinetic reactions. Multi-phase management is coupled to chemistry and to mass and charge transport within bulk phases. The functionality and flexibility of this framework is demonstrated using four application areas in the context of post-lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells, that is, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) cells, lithium-oxygen (Li-O) cells, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEFC). The results are compared to models available in literature and properties of the generic framework are discussed.

The brain is an extremely complex structure of interwoven, intercommunicating cells, but recent theoretical and experimental works showed that the classical laws of diffusion, cast in the framework of porous media theory, can deliver an accurate quantitative description of the way molecules are transported through this tissue. The mathematical modeling and the numerical simulations are successfully applied in the investigation of diffusion processes in tissues, replacing the costly laboratory investigations. Nevertheless, modeling must rely on highly accurate information regarding the main parameters (tortuosity, volume fraction) which characterize the tissue, obtained by structural and functional imaging. The usual techniques to measure the diffusion mechanism in brain tissue are the radiotracer method, the real time iontophoretic method and integrative optical imaging using fluorescence microscopy. A promising technique for obtaining the values for characteristic parameters of the transport equation is the direct optical investigation using optical fibers. The analysis of these parameters also reveals how the local geometry of the brain changes with time or under pathological conditions. This paper presents a set of computations concerning the mass transport inside the brain tissue, for different types of cells. By measuring the time evolution of the concentration profile of an injected substance and using suitable fitting procedures, the main parameters characterizing the tissue can be determined. This type of analysis could be an important tool in understanding the functional mechanisms of effective drug delivery in complex structures such as the brain tissue. It also offers possibilities to realize optical imaging methods for in vitro and in vivo measurements using optical fibers. The model also may help in radiotracer biomarker models for the understanding of the mechanism of action of new chemical entities.
A highly scalable IEEE802.11p communication and localization subsystem for autonomous urban driving

The IEEE802.11p standard describes a protocol for car-to-X and mainly for car-to-car-communication. It has found its place in hardware and firmware implementations and is currently tested in various field tests. In the research project Ko-TAG, which is part of the research initiative Ko-FAS, cooperative sensor technology is developed for the support of highly autonomous driving. A secondary radar principle based on communication signals enables localization of objects with simultaneous data transmission. It mainly concentrates on the detection of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users (VRU), but also supports pre crash safety applications. Thus it is mainly targeted for the support of traffic safety applications in intra-urban scenarios. This contribution describes the Ko-TAG part of the overall initiative, which develops a subsystem to improve the real-time characteristics of IEEE802.11p needed for precise time of flight real-time localization. In doing this, it still fits into the regulatory schemes. It discusses the approach for definition and verification of the protocol design, while maintaining the close coexistence with existing IEEE802.11p subsystems. System simulations were performed and hardware was implemented. Test results are shown in the last part of the paper.
A Localization System Using Inertial Measurement Units from Wireless Commercial Handheld Devices

This paper describes a newly developed technology for the calculation of trajectories of mobile objects, which is based on commercially available sensors being integrated into modern mobile phones and other gadgets. First, a step counting technique was implemented. Second, a novel step length estimator is proposed. These two algorithms utilize the data from accelerometer sensor only. Third, the heading information was obtained using a gyroscope with complementary filter in quaternion form. The combined algorithm was implemented on a low-power ARM processor to provide the trajectory points relative to an initial point. The proposed technique was tested by 10 subjects, in different shoes with different paces. The dependence of the performance of the technology on the attaching point of the mobile device is weak. The proposed algorithms have better balance and estimation accuracy and depend in less degree on the variety in physical parameters of people in comparison with the existing techniques. In experiments inertial measurement units were mounted in different places, i.e. in the hand, in trousers or in T-shirt pockets. The return position error did not exceed 5% of the total travelled distance for all performed tests.
The communication technologies for automatic meter reading (smart metering) and for energy production and distribution networks (smart grid) have the potential to be one of the first really highly scaled machine-to-machine-M2M-applications. During the last years, two very promising developments around the wireless part of the smart grid communication were initialized, which possibly could have an impact on the network architectures and the markets far beyond Germany and far beyond energy automation. Besides the specification of the OMS Group of a security extension to the Wireless M-Bus protocol (EN13757-4), the German Federal Office for Information Security (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik, BSI) has designed a Protection Profile (PP) and a Technical Directive (TR) for the communication unit of an intelligent measurement system (Smart Meter Gateway), which were released in March 2013. This design uses state of the art technologies and prescribes their implementation in real-life systems. At first, the proposed paper will present the most important characteristics of this architecture. It will then give an insight into the implementation of the OMS security protocols, which imply the usage of a mutually authenticated SSL protocol also in the Local Metrological Network. This is achieved with the help of an additional Authentication and Fragmentation Layer (AFL). This secure communication will be terminated in a BSI conformant secure smart meter gateway, which is developed in a different project and described in the second step. Finally, the contribution will discuss the integration of such a metering network into an overall telecommunication network and PKI infrastructure.
Efficient, low-cost, secure and reliable communication solutions are a major stepping stone for smart metering and smart grid applications. This especially holds true for the so called primary communication or local metrological network (LMN) between a local meter or actuator and a data collector or gateway, where the highest requirements with regard to cost, bandwidth, and energy efficiency have to be taken into consideration. Multiple developments and field tests are going on in this field, however, energy autarkic devices are hardly found, yet. This contribution describes the development of an automatic water meter reading (AWMR) technology based on Wireless M-Bus to provide water utility companies with an automatic remote water meter reading solution. It addresses the special needs of home utilities by providing a remote metering solution independent from the electricity infrastructure, both in terms of data communication and in terms of power supply. For this project, a cost efficient integrated energy harvesting system powered by the available water flow was developed, to enable operation independently of the mains grid, and eliminate the need for battery replacement for near-zero maintenance costs.
The combination of fossil-derived fuels with ethanol and methanol has acquired relevance and attention in several countries in recent years. This trend is strongly affected by market prices, constant geopolitical events, new sustainability policies, new laws and regulations, etc. Besides bio-fuels these materials also include different additives as anti-shock agents and as octane enhancer. Some of the chemical compounds in these additives may have harmful properties for both environment and public health (besides the inherent properties, like volatility). We present detailed Raman spectral information from toluene (C7H8) and ethanol (C2H6O) contained in samples of ElO gasoline-ethanol blends. The spectral information has been extracted by using a robust, high resolution Fourier-Transform Raman spectrometer (FT-Raman) prototype. This spectral information has been also compared with Raman spectra from pure additives and with standard Raman lines in order to validate its accuracy in frequency. The spectral information is presented in the range of 0 cm-1 to 3500 cm-1 with a resolution of 1.66cm-1. This allows resolving tight adjacent Raman lines like the ones observed around 1003cm-1 and 1030cm-1 (characteristic lines of toluene). The Raman spectra obtained show a reduced frequency deviation when compared to standard Raman spectra from different calibration materials. The FT-Raman spectrometer prototype used for the analysis consist basically of a Michelson interferometer and a self-designed photon counter cooled down on a Peltier element arrangement. The light coupling is achieved with conventional62.5/125μm multi-mode fibers. This FT-Raman setup is able to extract high resolution and frequency precise Raman spectra from the additives in the fuels analyzed. The proposed prototype has no additional complex hardware components or costly software modules. The mechanical and thermal disturbances affecting the FT-Raman system are mathematically compensated by accurately extracting the optical path information of the Michelson interferometer. This is accomplished by generating an additional interference pattern with a λ = 632.8 nm Helium-Neon laser (HeNe laser). It enables the FT-Raman system to perform reliable and clean spectral measurements from the materials under observation.

Ranging errors are inevitable in all local positioning systems, including those based on Time-of-Flight (ToF) technique. Results of experiments show that the major cause for these errors is a signal degradation from multipath propagation. This effect is especially critical in case of Non-Light-of-Sight (NLOS) conditions. This paper describes causes that affects ranging errors for nanoLOC™-TOF-technology and presents estimations for the probability density functions of such errors under different NLOS conditions. The provided estimations allow the improvement of the accuracy of the localization through the subsequent mitigation of the ranging errors from the measurements. Additionally, it is proposed to increase the number of cases of NLOS-conditions for the improvement of the accuracy.
Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) is a major enabler for the upcoming smart grid. Potentially, it will be one of the first really large-scale M2M-communication solutions for sensor applications.
To date, the definition of the standardized communication stacks for Local Metrological Network (LMN) in AMR is still ongoing. This holds true both for ZigBee Smart Energy Profile and for Wireless M-Bus according to EN 13757. During this process, there is the necessity for flexible, albeit optimized solutions, which support the different existing and upcoming versions of the communication protocols. In the case of Wireless M-Bus, the major contender for European and possibly Asian installations, this is valid not only for the different operation modes (C-, N-, P-, Q-, R-, S-, and T-modes), which work in different frequencies (i.e. 868 MHz, 433 MHz, and 169 MHz) but also for the application layer, where additional bodies, like EN137575, Open Metering System (OMS) Group, or national bodies follow their approaches.
This contribution describes requirements, design techniques and experiences from the development of highly efficient Wireless M-Bus protocol stacks with support of good flexibility and portability between microcontroller platforms and RF-transceivers. The presented approach is not limited to the use of modern software engineering design processes, as such, but also includes essential additional features like testing or simulation, as well as tools for commissioning and monitoring.
In this paper we propose a motion framework forbipedal robots that decouples motion definitions from stabilizingthe robot. This simplifies motion definitions yet allows dynamicmotion adaptations. Two applications, walking and stopping onone leg, demonstrate the power of the framework. We show thatour framework is able to perform walking and stopping on one legeven under extreme conditions and improves walking benchmarkssignificantly in the RoboCup 3D soccer simulation domain.
Autonomous humanoid robots need high torque actuators to be able to walk and run. One problem in this context is the heat generated. In this paper we propose to use water evaporation to improve cooling of the motors. Simulations based on thermodynamic calculations as well as measurements on real actuators show that, under the assumption of the load of a soccer game, cooling can be considerably improved with relatively small amounts of water.
The formation of secondary phases in the porous electrodes is a severe mechanism affecting the lifetime of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). It can occur via various chemical mechanisms and it has a significant influence on cell performance due to pore clogging and deactivation of active surfaces and triple-phase boundary (TPB). We present a modeling and simulation study of nickel oxide formation (reoxidation) and carbon formation (coking) within the SOFC anode. We use a 2D continuum model based on a multi-phase framework [Neidhardt et al., J. Electrochem. Soc., 159, 9 (2012)] that allows the introduction of arbitrary solid phases (here: Ni, YSZ, NiO, Carbon) plus gas phase. Reactions between the bulk phases are modeled via interface-adsorbed species and are described by an elementary kinetic approach. Published experimental data are used for parameterization and validation. Simulations allow the prediction of cell performance under critical operation conditions, like (i) a non-fuel operation test, where NiO formation is taking place (Figure 1a), or (ii) an open circuit voltage (OCV) stability test under hydrocarbon atmosphere, where solid carbon is formed (Figure 1b). Results are applied for enhanced interpretation of experimental data and for prediction of safe operation conditions.
The communication between objects, i.e. between cars (car-2-car, C2C), between cars and infrastructure (car-2-infrastructure, C2I) and between cars and vulnerable road users (car-2-VRU, C2VRU) is a major stepping stone towards traffic applications to enable efficient and safe traffic flow. However, these applications pose very high requirements to the communication protocols, which go beyond the capabilities of an available standardized solution.
This contribution shows how iterative design processes can help to fulfill these requirements, while re-using a maximum of elements from one level to the next and thus avoiding unrealistic overhead. In especially, the added value of simulation and emulation in this iterative process is elaborated.

In the dual membrane fuel cell (DM-Cell), protons formed at the anode and oxygen ions formed at the cathode migrate through their respective dense electrolytes to react and form water in a porous composite layer called dual membrane (DM). The DM-Cell concept was experimentally proven (as detailed in Part I of this paper). To describe the electrochemical processes occurring in this novel fuel cell, a mathematical model has been developed which focuses on the DM as the characteristic feature of the DM-Cell. In the model, the porous composite DM is treated as a continuum medium characterized by effective macro-homogeneous properties. To simulate the polarization behavior of the DM-Cell, the potential distribution in the DM is related to the flux of protons and oxygen ions in the conducting phases by introducing kinetic and transport equations into charge balances. Since water pressure may affect the overall formation rate, water mass balances across the DM and transport equations are also considered. The satisfactory comparison with available experimental results suggests that the model provides sound indications on the effects of key design parameters and operating conditions on cell behavior and performance.
The design of control systems of concentrator photovoltaic power plants will be more challenging in the future. Reasons are cost pressure, the increasing size of power plants, and new applications for operation, monitoring and maintenance required by grid operators, manufacturers and plant operators. Concepts and products for fixed-mounted photovoltaic can only partly be adapted since control systems for concentrator photovoltaic are considerable more complex due to the required high accurate sun-tracking. In order to assure reliable operation during a lifetime of more than 20 years, robustness of the control system is one crucial design criteria. This work considers common engineering technics for robustness, safety and security. Potential failures of the control system are identified and their effects are analyzed. Different attack scenarios are investigated. Outcomes are design criteria that encounter both: failures of system components and malicious attacks on the control system of future concentrator photovoltaic power plants. Such design criteria are a transparent state management through all system layers, self-tests and update capabilities for security concerns. The findings enable future research to develop a more robust and secure control system for concentrator photovoltaics when implementing new functionalities in the next generation.
The communication system of a large-scale concentrator photovoltaic power plant is very challenging. Manufacturers are building power plants having thousands of sun tracking systems equipped with communication and distributed over a wide area. Research is necessary to build a scalable communication system enabling modern control strategies. This poster abstract describes the ongoing work on the development of a simulation model of such power plants in OMNeT++. The model uses the INET Framework to build a communication network based on Ethernet. First results and problems of timing and data transmission experiments are outlined. The model enables research on new communication and control approaches to improve functionality and efficiency of power plants based on concentrator photovoltaic technology.
Decrease of non-responder rate is the main chal-lenge in cardiac resynchronization therapy. The problem could be solved, partly, in the follow-up by consequent indi-vidualization of hemodynamic pacing parameters. The eso-phageal electrogram feature of the Biotronik ICS 3000 programmer was used in the follow-up of 20 heart failure patients carrying implants for cardiac resynchronization therapy. Adverse hemodynamic programming of the sensed and paced AV delay could be easily observed and replaced by the individual optimal duration in 3 patients (15%) VDD and DDD operation.This result proves the value of esophageal electrogram recording CRT follow-up.
Network landscape of recent time contains many different network technologies, a wide range of end-devices with a large scale of capabilities and power, and an immense quantity of information and data represented in different formats. Research on 3D imaging, virtual reality and holographic techniques will result in new user interfaces (UI) for mobile devices, will increase their diversity and variety. In this paper software architecture has been proposed to establish device and content format independent communication including 3D imaging and virtual reality data as content. As experimental validation the concept is implemented in collaborative Language Learning Game (LLG), which is a learning tool for language acquisition.
The paper proposes a system architecture for charging infrastructure that serves the requirements of future fleets of shared-use electric vehicles in urban scenarios. The focus of the development is on the interfaces to central stakeholders such as mobility service providers, distribution network operators and utilities. The main concept of the proposed system is the adherence to a stringent resource-oriented design approach, following the design principles of the Representational State Transfer (REST) architectural software style for distributed systems. This design approach is used from the cloud-based services down to the implementation of the charging infrastructure's control algorithms. Focusing on the resources of the various entities simplifies the implementation of their interactions, compared to the explicit declaration of services that are available. The system design ensures that the charging infrastructure is open to all users and generates a benefit beyond basic charging operations. Integration in emerging smart markets is done via open web-based interfaces. These allow for the generation of an added value of concrete services for shared-use electric mobility. A link to the field of grid operation is proposed using the ISO/IEC 61850 telecontrol standard. The smart meter capabilities of the charging stations can be used to gain additional information on the current state of the distribution grid. As an exemplary service a load management service for a fleet of shared-use electric vehicles is going to be implemented.
Automated RF Emulator for a Highly Scalable IEEE802.11p Communication and Localization Subsystem

The Ko-TAG subsystem improves the real-time characteristics of IEEE802.11p needed for precise time of flight real-time localization while still fitting into the regulatory schemes. A secondary radar principle based on communication signals enables localization of objects with simultaneous data transmission. The Ko-TAG subsystem mainly concentrates on the support of traffic safety applications in intra-urban scenarios. This paper details on the development of a fully automated RF emulator used to test the Ko-TAG subsystem.
The RF emulator includes the physical networking nodes, but models the RF environment using RF-waveguides. The RF emulator allows the controlling of path loss and connectivity between any of the nodes with the help of RF attenuators and programmable RF switches, while it is shielded against its surrounding RF environment in the lab. Therefore it is an inexpensive alternative to an RF absorber chamber, which often is not available or exceeds the project’s budget.

Monitoring of the molecular structure of lubricant oil using a FT-Raman spectrometer prototype

The determination of the physical state of the lubricant materials in complex mechanical systems is highly critical from different points of view: operative, economical, environmental, etc. Furthermore, there are several parameters that a lubricant oil must meet for a proper performance inside a machine. The monitoring of these lubricants can represent a serious issue depending on the analytical approach applied. The molecular change of aging lubricant oils have been analyzed using an all-standard-components and self-designed FT-Raman spectrometer. This analytical tool allows the direct and clean study of the vibrational changes in the molecular structure of the oils without having direct contact with the samples and without extracting the sample from the machine in operation. The FT-Raman spectrometer prototype used in the analysis of the oil samples consist of a Michelson interferometer and a self-designed photon counter cooled down on a Peltier element arrangement. The light coupling has been accomplished by using a conventional 62.5/125μm multi-mode fiber coupler. The FT-Raman arrangement has been able to extract high resolution and frequency precise Raman spectra, comparable to those obtained with commercial FT-Raman systems, from the lubricant oil samples analyzed. The spectral information has helped to determine certain molecular changes in the initial phases of wearing of the oil samples. The proposed instrument prototype has no additional complex hardware components or costly software modules. The mechanical and thermal irregularities influencing the FT-Raman spectrometer have been removed mathematically by accurately evaluating the optical path difference of the Michelson interferometer. This has been achieved by producing an additional interference pattern signal with a λ= 632.8 nm helium-neon laser, which differs from the conventional zero-crossing sampling (also known as Connes advantage) commonly used by FT-devices. It enables the FT-Raman system to perform reliable and clean spectral measurements from the analyzed oil samples.
