Klausur-Coach Statistik
(2016)
First year Business Administration students tend to regard themselves as “non-computer scientists” and often have a lack of motivation about taking IT courses in general, either because they perceive them as too technical, too difficult or somewhat irrelevant. In an attempt to counteract this perception and increase the levels of engagement and willing attendance to class, we decided to flip the traditional lecture model and develop a new teaching and learning approach for the IT Fundamentals course using an open source Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system as the platform from which to draw the various underlying IT concepts and through which the relevant competences can be acquired.
This paper describes the implementation process of this new contextualized learning framework “IT via ERP” and the changes in the didactical methods to support it.
Today the methods of numerical simulation of sheet metal forming offer a great diversity of possibilities for optimization in product development and in process design. However, the results from simulation are only available as virtual models. Because there are any forming tools available during the early stages of product development, physical models that could serve to represent the virtual results are therefore lacking. Physical 3D-models can be created using 3D-printing and serve as an illustration and present a better understanding of the simulation results. In this way, the results from the simulation can be made more “comprehensible” within a development team. This paper presents the possibilities of 3D-colour printing with particular consideration of the requirements regarding the implementation of sheet metal forming simulation. Using concrete examples of sheet metal forming, the manufacturing of 3D colour models will be expounded upon on the basis of simulation results.

Einsatz von Additive Manufacturing zur Darstellung von Simulationsergebnissen in der Blechumformung
(2016)
In recent years simple CAD systems have entered the market, which are offered as freeware or open source projects. These systems prove to be a key technology especially for the further expansion of 3D printing, because a 3D model of the object to be printed is a prerequisite for the use of a 3D printer. Therefore, this contribution reviews several common simple CAD systems. Thus technical and economic criteria are evaluated. It is also demonstrated how the models designed in this manner can be used in 3D printing. A case study shows the possibilities and limitations to be expected when using simple CAD systems.
Additive manufacturing (AM), or 3D printing (3DP), has increasingly become more wide-spread and applied to a great degree over the past years. Along with that, the necessity for training courses which impart the required knowledge for product development with 3D printing rises. This article will introduce a “Rapid Prototyping” workshop which should convey to students the technical and creative knowledge for product development in using additive manufacturing. In this workshop, various 3D printers are initially installed and put into operation for the construction of self-assembly kits during the introduced training course. Afterwards, the students use databanks to select and download suitable components for the 3D print on the basis of criteria. Lastly, the students develop several assembly kits independently and establish design guidelines based on their experience. The students likewise learn to estimate and evaluate economic boundaries such as, e.g. costs and delivery times. For a start, it is a new approach to be using various assembly kits. These are up to date with current technology and dispose of features such as, e.g., additional nozzles for support material and heated building platforms. Moreover, a comprehensive evaluation of the training success will be conducted. The students’ level of knowledge in various areas will also be determined and compared with surveys taken before and after the conducting of the workshops. Additionally, cost and delivery time estimates and knowledge of databanks will be determined through concrete questioning.
A number of design rules must be adhered to in the development and manufacturing of unmanned aerial vehicles. In this, additive manufacturing, particularly in the implementation of requirements with respect to light-weight construction and sustainability, offers several advantages compared to conventional manufacturing methods. Therefore, this article will primarily introduce and compare current concepts for sustainable design using additive manufacturing. These will, above all, consist of the production of complete fuselages and wings by means of rapid prototyping or also rapid tooling. In addition, a new concept will be introduced in which a UAV using AM can be implemented through the combination of very light components and a preferably resource-saving manufacturing method. In this process, a three-dimensional spaceframe is used in combination with a covering in the construction of the wing. Hereby, the development process for sustainable design using additive manufacturing will be analyzed and the results will be explained by means of concrete case studies. In conclusion, the results of these case studies will be compared to the latest technology regarding wing span load.
To successfully support private sector development in Africa by the use of trade and export promotion instruments, a comprehensive policy framework is crucial. Different institutional setups for development support show different levels of resilience and effectiveness in coping with the economic conditions they are exposed to. However, there is strong evidence that managing the interplay of three fundamental building blocks – public policy, focus areas, strategic objectives and critical success factors as well as institutions, is the key to crafting sustainable and responsive economies. Export plays a significant role in the national economy, and innovative and integrated government financing instruments have to successfully support the competitiveness of national companies in the global economy. Financing and supporting foreign trade with private businesses in Africa occupies a pivotal role, impacting from new product development and job creation in developed countries through economic growth and human development in African countries.
The paper conceptualizes the systemic approach for enhancing innovative and competitive capacity of industrial companies (named as Advanced Innovation Design Approach – AIDA) including analysis, optimizations and further development of the innovation process and promoting the innovation climate in industrial companies. The innovation process is understood as a holistic stage-gate system comprising following typical phases with feedback loops and simultaneous auxiliary or follow-up processes: uncovering of solution-neutral customer needs, technology and market trends, identification of the needs and problems with high market potential and formulation of the innovation tasks and strategy, idea generation and problem solving, evaluation and enhancement of solution ideas, creation of innovation concepts based on solution ideas, evaluation of the innovation concepts as well as implementation, validation and market launch of chosen innovation concepts. The article presents the current state of innovation research and discusses the actual status of innovation process in the industrial environment. It defines the future research tasks for amplification of the innovation process with self-configuration, self-optimization, self-diagnostics and intelligent information processing and communication.
The paper recommends an approach to estimate effectively the probability of buffer overflow in high-speed communication networks, capable of carrying diverse traffic, including self-similar teletraffic, and supporting diverse levels of quality of service. Simulations with stochastic, long-range dependent self-similar traffic source models are conducted. A new efficient algorithm, based on a variant of the RESTART/LRE method, is developed and applied to accelerate the buffer overflow simulation in a finite buffer single server model under long-range dependent self-similar traffic load with different buffer sizes. Numerical examples and simulation results are shown
In a recent paper it has been shown that the effective nonlinear constant which is used in a P-Matrix approach to describe third-order intermodulation (IMD3) in surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices can be obtained from finite element (FEM) calculations of a periodic cell using nonlinear tensor data [1]. In this paper we extend this FEM calculation and show that the IMD3 of an infinite periodic array of electrodes on a piezoelectric substrate can be directly simulated in the sagittal plane. This direct approach opens the way for a FEM based simulation of nonlinearities for finite and generalized structures avoiding the simplifications of phenomenological approaches.
Laser pulses focused near the tip of an elastic wedge generate acoustic waves guided at its apex. The shapes of the acoustic wedge wave pulses depend on the energy and the profile of the exciting laser pulse and on the anisotropy of the elastic medium the wedge is made of. Expressions for the acoustic pulse shapes have been derived in terms of the modal displacement fields of wedge waves for laser excitation in the thermo-elastic regime and for excitation via a pressure pulse exerted on the surface. The physical quantity considered is the local inclination of a surface of the wedge, which is measured optically by laser-probe-beam deflection. Experimental results on pulse shapes in the thermo-elastic regime are presented and confirmed by numerical calculations. They pertain to an isotropic sharp-angle wedge with two wedge-wave branches and to a non-reciprocity phenomenon at rectangular silicon edges.
The existence of acoustic waves with displacements localized at the tip of an isotropic elastic wedge was rigorously proven by Kamotskii, Zavorokhin and Nazarov. This proof, which is based on a variational approach, is extended to rectangular anisotropic wedges. For two high-symmetry configurations of rectangular edges in elastic media with tetragonal symmetry, a criterion is derived that allows identifying the boundary between the regions of existence for wedge modes of even and odd symmetry in regions of parameter space, where even- and odd-symmetry modes do not exist simultaneously. Furthermore, rectangular edges with non-equivalent surfaces are analyzed, and it is shown that at rectangular edges of cubic elastic media with one (110) surface and one (001) surface, a tip-localized guided wave always exists, apart from special cases that are characterized.

All you need is sleep
(2016)
In 21st century, the century when the humanity hopes to embark on interplanetary travel, we are yet to fully reach an understanding of our very own idiosyncratic terra incognita – the human sleep. Sleep is a highly conserved evolutionary process that constitutes approximately one third of our life, and the lack or inadequate sleep may lead to impairment across multiple cognitive domains (Tononi and Cirelli, 2014; Lim and Dinges, 2010). Sleep deprivation also leads to aberrant brain functioning, immunological and metabolic collapse, and if it is sufficiently prolonged it will ultimately lead to death (Tononi and Cirelli, 2014).

There is increasing evidence of central hyperexcitability in chronic whiplash-associated disorders (cWAD). However, little is known about how an apparently simple cervical spine injury can induce changes in cerebral processes. The present study was designed (1) to validate previous results showing alterations of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in cWAD, (2) to test if central hyperexcitability reflects changes in rCBF upon non-painful stimulation of the neck, and (3) to verify our hypothesis that the missing link in understanding the underlying pathophysiology could be the close interaction between the neck and midbrain structures. For this purpose, alterations of rCBF were explored in a case-control study using H215O positron emission tomography, where each group was exposed to four different conditions, including rest and different levels of non-painful electrical stimulation of the neck. rCBF was found to be elevated in patients with cWAD in the posterior cingulate and precuneus, and decreased in the superior temporal, parahippocampal, and inferior frontal gyri, the thalamus and the insular cortex when compared with rCBF in healthy controls. No differences in rCBF were observed between different levels of electrical stimulation. The alterations in regions directly involved with pain perception and interoceptive processing indicate that cWAD symptoms might be the consequence of a mismatch during the integration of information in brain regions involved in pain processing.
