Die Geschäftsleitung und Führungskräfte von Eller Repro+Druck beschlossen im Juli 1994 die Teilnahme am damls noch neuen EU-Öko-Audit. Die Durchführung des Audits ist für 1996 geplant. Zwei Diplomanden der FH Offenburg wurde die Möglichkeit gegeben, als externe Berater für Eller Repro+Druck ihre Diplomarbeit über die Vorbereitung zum Öko-Audit zu schreiben. Der Betrieb (170 Mitarbeiter) verfügt über elektronische Bildverarbeitung auf Scitex- und Mac-Schiene, derzeit noch konventionelle Plattenkopie und -entwicklung, fünf Offsetrotationen sowie Weiterverarbeitung mit Sammelheftern und Falzmaschinen. Der Referent berichtet über die Erfahrungen, die sein Unternehmen bis zum Herbst 1995 mit der Vorbereitung zum Öko-Audit gemacht hat, und gibt Praxistips. Zusammen mit den Beratern wurden eine Aufnahme der betrieblichen Situation durchgeführt, Maßnahmen geplant und zum Teil durchgeführt.
Der vorliegene Beitrag beschreibt erste Untersuchungsergebnisse mit der Finite-Elemente-Methode (FEM) zur Ermittlung der Kennwerte des bezogenen Spannungsgefälles beim linear-elastischen Werkstoffverhalten für die nach DIN 5480 genormten Zahnwellen mit freiem Auslauf bei Torsion, Biegung und Zug/Druck. Für die Bestimmung von Zwischen-werten werden analytische Näherungsgleichungen aufgestellt.
Wow, You Are Terrible at This!: An Intercultural Study on Virtual Agents Giving Mixed Feedback

While the effects of virtual agents in terms of likeability, uncanniness, etc. are well explored, it is unclear how their appearance and the feedback they give affects people's reactions. Is critical feedback from an agent embodied as a mouse or a robot taken less serious than from a human agent? In an intercultural study with 120 participants from Germany and the US, participants had to find hidden objects in a game and received feedback on their performance by virtual agents with different appearances. As some levels were designed to be unsolvable, critical feedback was unavoidable. We hypothesized that feedback would be taken more serious, the more human the agent looked. Also, we expected the subjects from the US to react more sensitively to criticism. Surprisingly, our results showed that the agents' appearance did not significantly change the participants' perception. Also, while we found highly significant differences in inspirational and motivational effects as well as in perceived task load between the two cultures, the reactions to criticism were contrary to expectations based on established cultural models. This work improves our understanding on how affective virtual agents are to be designed, both with respect to culture and to dialogue strategies.
This paper presents a new approach for the teaching of competence in additive manufacturing to engineering students in product development. Particularly new to this approach is the combination of the students' autonomous assembly and commissioning of a 3D-printer, and the independent development of guidelines for this new technology regarding the design of components. This way the students will be able to gain first practical experiences with the data preparation, the additive manufacturing process itself and also the required post-treatment of the 3D-printed parts. To allow the students a significantly deeper insight into the functioning of 3D-printing, the workshop Rapid Prototyping developed a new approach in the course of which the students first assemble a construction kit for a 3D-printer themselves and then commission the printer. This enables the students to gain a better understanding of the functionality and configuration of additive manufacturing. In a next step, the students used the 3D-printers they constructed themselves to produce components which they take from a database. Finally, the experiences of the students in the course of the workshop will be evaluated to review the effectiveness of the new approach.
Additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing (3DP) has become a widespread new technology in recent years and is now used in many areas of industry. At the same time, there is an increasing need for training courses that impart the knowledge required for product development in 3D printing. In this article, a workshop on “Rapid Prototyping” is presented, which is intended to provide students with the technical and creative knowledge for product development in the field of AM. Today, additive manufacturing is an important part of teaching for the training of future engineers. In a detailed literature review, the advantages and disadvantages of previous approaches to training students are examined and analyzed. On this basis, a new approach is developed in which the students analyze and optimize a given product in terms of additivie manufacturing. The students use two different 3D printers to complete this task. In this way, the students acquire the skills to work independently with different processes and materials. With this new approach, the students learn to adapt the design to different manufacturing processes and to observe the restrictions of different materials. The results of these courses are evaluated through feedback in a presentation and a questionnaire.
Home Care Applications and Ambient Assisted Living become increasingly attractive. This is caused as well by market pull, as the number of elderly people grows monotonously, as well as by technology push, as technological advances and attractive products pave the way to economically advantageous offerings. However, in real-life applications, a significant number of challenges remain. Those include seamless communication between products from different supplier, due to the lack of sufficiently standardized solutions, energy budgets, and scalability of solutions. This paper presents the experience from the InCASA project (Integrated Network for Completely Assisted Senior Citizen's Autonomy), where architectures for heterogeneous physical and logical communication flows are examined.
Die Vielfalt der Protokolle, die praktisch auf allen Ebenen der Netzwerkkommunikation zu berücksichtigen ist, stellt eine der großen Herausforderungen bei der fortschreitenden Automatisierung des intelligenten Hauses dar. Unter dem Überbegriff Internet der Dinge (Internet of Things) entstehen gegenwärtig zahlreiche neue Entwicklungen, Standards, Allianzen und so genannte Ökosysteme. Diese haben die Absicht einer horizontalen Integration gewerkeübergreifender Anwendungen und verfolgen fast alle das Ziel, die Situation zu vereinfachen, die Entwicklungen zu beschleunigen und Markterfolge zu erreichen. Leider macht diese Vielfalt momentan die Welt aber eher noch komplexer und bringt damit das Risiko mit sich, genau das Gegenteil der ursprünglichen Absichten zu erreichen. Dieser Beitrag versucht, die Entwicklungen möglichst systematisch zu kategorisieren und mögliche Lösungsansätze zu beschreiben.
This paper describes a comparative study of two tactile systems supporting navigation for persons with little or no visual and auditory perception. The efficacy of a tactile head-mounted device (HMD) was compared to that of a wearable device, a tactile belt. A study with twenty participants showed that the participants took significantly less time to complete a course when navigating with the HMD, as compared to the belt.
A novel approach of a test environment for embedded networking nodes has been conceptualized and implemented. Its basis is the use of virtual nodes in a PC environment, where each node executes the original embedded code. Different nodes run in parallel, connected via so-called virtual channels. The environment allows to modifying the behavior of the virtual channels as well as the overall topology during runtime to virtualize real-life networking scenarios. The presented approach is very efficient and allows a simple description of test cases without the need of a network simulator. Furthermore, it speeds up the process of developing new features as well as it supports the identification of bugs in wireless communication stacks. In combination with powerful test execution systems, it is possible to create a continuous development and integration flow.
The paper describes the implementation of practical laboratory settings in a virtual environment. With the entry of VR glasses into the mass market, there is a chance to establish educational and training applications for displaying some teaching materials and practical works. Therefore our project focuses on the realization of virtual experiments and environments, which gives users a deep insight into selected subfields of Optics and Photonics. Our goal is not to substitute the hand on experiments rather to extend them. By means of VR glasses, the user is offered the possibility to view the experiment from several angles and to make changes through interactive control functions. During the VR application, additional context-related information is displayed. By using object recognition, the specific graphics and texts for the respective object are loaded and supplemented at the appropriate place. Thus, complex facts are supported in an informative way. The prototype is developed using the Unity Engine and can thus be exported to different platforms and end devices. Another major advantage of virtual simulations to the real situation is the high degree of controllability as well as the easy repeatability. With slight modifications, entire experiments can be reused. Our research aims to acquire new knowledge in the field of e-learning in association with VR technology. Here we try to answer a core question of the compatibility of the individual media components.
Controlling ist ein Begriff aus der Wirtschaftslehre und bezeichnet nicht Kontrollle, sondern Prozeßsteuerung. Definierte Ziele werden durch kleinteilige Messungen und permanente Überwachung aller Arbeitsschritte und Handlungen der beteiligten Personen protokolliert und stetig optimiert. Dieses Konzept der Planungs-, Koordinations- und Kontrollaufgaben wird beim „Bildungs-Controlling“ auf Schulen und Hochschulen übertragen. Ziel ist dabei, entsprechend der Gary Beckerschen Humankapitaltheorie, die Produktion von Humankapital mit validierten Kompetenzen. Zwei Probleme gibt es dabei: Lernen und vor allem Verstehen lassen sich nicht automatisieren und auch nicht automatisiert prüfen. Und: Sozialsysteme unter dem Regime der Kennzahlen des Quality Management (QM) oder Total Quality Management (TQM) verlieren ihre Eigenschaft als soziale Systeme
Background: Transesophageal left atrial (LA) pacing and transesophageal LA ECG recording are semi-invasive techniques for diagnostic and therapy of supraventricular rhythm disturbance. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with right atrial (RA) sensed biventricular pacing is an established therapy for heart failure patients with reduced left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction, sinus rhythm and interventricular electrical desynchronization.
Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate electromagnetic and voltage pacing fields of the combination of RA pacing, LA pacing and biventricular pacing in patients with long interatrial and interventricular electrical desynchronization.
Methods: The modelling and electromagnetic simulations of transesophageal LA pacing in combination with RA pacing and biventricular pacing would be staged and analyzed with the CST (Computer Simulation Technology) software. Different electrodes were modelled in order to simulate different types of bipolar pacing in the 3D-CAD Offenburg heart rhythm model: The bipolar Solid S (Biotronik) electrode where modelled for RA pacing and right ventricular (RV) pacing, Attain 4194 (Medtronic) for LV pacing and TO8 (Osypka) multipolar esophageal electrode with hemispheric electrodes for LA pacing.
Results: The pacemaker amplitudes for the electromagnetic pacing simulations were performed with 3 V for RA pacing, 1.5 V for RV pacing, 50 V for LA pacing and 3V for LV pacing with pacing impulse duration of 0.5 ms for RA, RV and LV pacing and 10 ms for LA pacing. The atrioventricular pacing delay after RA pacing was 140 ms. The different pacing modes AAI, VVI, DDD, DDD0V and DDD0D were evaluated for the analysis of the electric pacing field propagation of pacemaker, CRT and LA pacing. The pacing results were compared at minimum (LOW) and maximum (HIGH) parameter settings. While the LOW setting produced fewer tetrahedral and more inaccurate results, the HIGH setting produced many tetrahedral and therefore more accurate results.
Conclusions: The simulation of the combination of transesophageal LA pacing with RA sensed biventricular pacing is possible with the Offenburg heart rhythm model. The new temporary 4-chamber pacing method may be additional useful method in CRT non-responders with long interatrial electrical delay.
Virtuelle Modell "begreifbar" Machen - Darstellung von Simulationsergebnissen mittels 3D-Farbdruck

Konstrukteure im Maschinenbau stehen häufig vor der Problemstellung, hochfest vorgespannte Schraubenverbindungen und einen durchgehenden Korrosionsschutz zu vereinen. Die Normen und Richtlinien bieten hierzu Stand heute keine ausreichenden Antworten. Die Hochschule Offenburg befasst sich im Rahmen einer industriellen Gemeinschaftsforschung mit der Fragestellung, welchen Einfluss organische Beschichtungen auf die Vorspannkraft insbesondere bei erhöhten Umgebungstemperaturen haben. In dieser Arbeit werden die ersten Ergebnisse zum Einfluss der Einzelschichtstärke des Beschichtungssystems präsentiert.
Höchste Korrosionsschutzanforderungen sind für bestimmte technische Produkte insbesondere im Offshore Anwendungsbereich, nach ISO 20340, zwingend zu erfüllen, um deren Funktion und Betriebssicherheit dauerhaft gewährleisten zu können. Bis heute werden viele dieser Produkte am Ende ihrer Wertschöpfungskette nass überlackiert, mit einer kompletten Kunststoffhaut, der Korrosionsschutz-Lackschicht, überzogen. Diese Lackierung ist unter anderem deshalb erforderlich, weil es im klassischen Maschinenbau, insbesondere in der Antriebstechnik, viele mechanische Schnittstellen gibt, die vor der endgültigen Produktmontage quasi metallisch blank bleiben müssen, um den erforderlichen und definierten geometrischen Oberflächenzustand nach Form und Lage als Pass- und Fügefläche zu gewährleisten. Eine dieser mechanischen Schnittstellen sind Schraubenverbindungen. Mit dem derzeit gültigen Regelwerk ist die Berechnung einer Schraubenverbindung mit Lackschichten in den Trennfugen oder auf der Kopf- und Mutternauflagefläche nicht möglich, da lackierte Bauteile in der derzeit geltenden VDI-Richtlinie 2230 nicht berücksichtigt sind. Nach einem Praxisbericht anhand von Stellantrieben für Industriearmaturen über deren Umstellung von Nasslackierung des Gesamtproduktes auf Pulverbeschichtung von Einzelteilen wird die experimentelle Validierung der Betriebs- und Funktionssicherheit von Schraubenverbindungen mit lackierten Bauteilen vorgestellt. Daraus resultierend wurde im März 2014 an der Hochschule Offenburg ein Forschungsprojekt gestartet, dessen Ziel es ist für die oben genannte Problemstellung einen systematischen Lösungsansatz zu erarbeiten. Künftig soll es Entwicklungsingenieuren und Konstrukteuren bereits in der Phase von Entwicklung und Konstruktion möglich sein Schraubenverbindungen mit lackierten Bauteilen zuverlässig zu berechnen und auszulegen oder diese in der Prototypenphase zuverlässig zu testen. Die letzten beiden Abschnitte geben den Lösungsansatz und den aktuellen Stand der Forschung wider.
We present a novel approach that utilizes BLE packets sent from generic BLE capable radios to synthesize an FSK-(like) addressable wake-up packet. A wake-up receiver system was developed from off-the-shelf components to detect these packets. It makes use of two differential signal paths separated by passive band-pass filters. After the rectification of each channel a differential amplifier compares the signals and the resulting wake-up signal is evaluated by an AS3933 wake-up receiver IC. Overall, the combination of these techniques contributes to a BLE compatible wake-up system which is more robust than traditional OOK wake-up systems. Thus, increasing wake-up range, while still maintaining a low energy budget. The proof-of-concept setup achieved a sensitivity of -47.8 dBm at a power consumption of 18.5 uW during passive listening. The system has a latency of 31.8 ms with a symbol rate of 1437 Baud.
We present the design of a system combining augmented reality (AR) and gamification to support elderly persons’ rehabilitation activities. The system is attached to the waist; it collects detailed movement data and at the same time augments the user’s path by projections. The projected AR-elements can provide location-based information or incite movement games. The collected data can be observed by therapists. Based on this data, the challenge level can be more frequently adapted, keeping up the patient’s motivation. The exercises can involve cognitive elements (for mild cognitive impairments), physiological elements (rehabilitation), or both. The overall vision is an individualized and gamified therapy. Thus, the system also offers application scenarios beyond rehabilitation in sports. In accordance with the methodology of design thinking, we present a first specification and a design vision based on inputs from business experts, gerontologists, physiologists, psychologists, game designers, cognitive scientists and computer scientists.
To reach customers by dialog marketing campaigns is more and more difficult. This is a common problem of companies and marketing agencies worldwide: information overload, multi-channel-communication and a confusing variety of offers make it hard to gain the attention of the target group. The contribution of this paper is four-fold: we provide an overview of the current state of print dialog marketing activities and trends (I). Based on this corpus we identify the main key performance indicators of dialog marketing customer interaction (II). A qualitative user experience study identifies the customer wishes and needs, focusing on lottery offers for senior citizens (III). Finally, we evaluate the success of two different dialog marketing campaigns with 20,000 clients and compare the key performance indicators of the original hands-on experience-based print mailings with user experience tested and optimized mailings (IV).
Three real-lab trigeneration microgrids are investigated in non-residential environments (educational, office/administrational, companies/production) with a special focus on domain-specific load characteristics. For accurate load forecasting on such a local level, à priori information on scheduled events have been combined with statistical insight from historical load data (capturing information on not explicitly-known consumer behavior). The load forecasts are then used as data input for (predictive) energy management systems that are implemented in the trigeneration microgrids. In real-world applications, these energy management systems must especially be able to carry out a number of safety and maintenance operations on components such as the battery (e.g. gassing) or CHP unit (e.g. regular test runs). Therefore, energy management systems should combine heuristics with advanced predictive optimization methods. Reducing the effort in IT infrastructure the main and safety relevant management process steps are done on site using a Smart & Local Energy Controller (SLEC) assisted by locally measured signals or operator given information as default and external inputs for any advanced optimization. Heuristic aspects for local fine adjustment of energy flows are presented.
Besides of conventional CAD systems, new, cloudbased CAD systems have also been available for some years. These CAD systems designed according to the principle of software as a service (SaaS) differ in some important features from the conventional CAD systems. Thus, these CAD systems are operated via a browser and it is not necessary to install the software on a computer. The CAD-data is stored in the cloud and not on a local computer or central server. This new approach should also facilitate the sharing and management of data. Finally, many of these new CAD systems are available as freeware for education purposes, so the universities can save license costs. The chances and risks of cloud-based systems will first be analyzed in this paper. Then two leading cloud-based CAD systems will be researched. During the process, the technical performance range these new systems offer for the product development will be initially checked and reviewed. For this purpose, various criteria are worked out and the CAD software is evaluated using these criteria. In addition, the criteria are weighted by their importance for design education. This allows one to conclude which capabilities the different CAD system offers for use in education.
Introduction: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with biventricular pacing (BV) is an established therapy for heart failure (HF) patients (P) with ventricular desynchronisation, but not all patients improved clinically. Aim of this study was to evaluate electrical intra-left ventricular conduction delay (LVCD) and interventricular conduction delay (IVCD), to better select patients for CRT.
Methods: 65 HF patients (age 63.4 ± 10.6 years; 7 females, 58 males) with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class 3 ± 0.2, 24.4 ± 6.7 % left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction and 167.4 ± 35.6 ms QRSD were included. Esophageal TO Osypka focused hemispherical electrodes catheter was perorally applied in position of maximum LV deflection to measure LVCD between onset and offset of LV deflection and IVCD between earliest onset of QRS in the 12-channel surface ECG and onset of LV deflection in the focused bipolar transesophageal LV electrogram.
Results: There were 50 responders with LVCD of 76.5 ± 20.4 ms, IVCD of 80.5 ± 26.1 ms (P=0.34) and QRSD of 171 ± 37.7 ms. 15 non-responders had longer LVCD of 90 ± 28.5 ms (P = 0.045), shorter IVCD of 50.1 ± 29.1 ms (P < 0.001) and QRSD of 155.3 ± 25 ms (P=0.14). During 21.3 ± 20.3 month BV pacing follow-up, the responder`s NYHA classes improved from 3 ± 0.2 to 2. ± 0.3 (P < 0.001) whereas the non-responders NYHA classes did not improve from 3 ± 0.2 to 2.9 ± 0.3 (P = 0.43) during 15.7 ± 13.9 month BV pacing follow-up (53 Boston, 10 Medtronic and 2 St. Jude CRT devices).
Conclusion: Determination of electrical LVCD and IVCD by focused bipolar transesophageal LV electrogram recording may be an additional useful technique to improve patient selection for CRT.
In this work, we consider a duty-cycled wireless sensor network with the assumption that the on/off schedules are uncoordinated. In such networks, as all nodes may not be awake during the transmission of time synchronization messages, nodes will require to re-transmit the synchronization messages. Ideally a node should re-transmit for the maximum sleep duration to ensure that all nodes are synchronized. However, such a proposition will immensely increase the energy consumption of the nodes. Such a situation demands that there is an upper bound of the number of retransmissions. We refer to the time a node spends in re-transmission of the control message as broadcast duration. We ask the question, what should be the broadcast duration to ensure that a certain percentage of the available nodes are synchronized. The problem to estimate the broadcast duration is formulated so as to capture the probability threshold of the nodes being synchronized. Results show the proposed analytical model can predict the broadcast duration with a given lower error margin under real world conditions, thus demonstrating the efficiency of our solution.
Introduction: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with biventricular pacing is an established therapy for heart failure (HF) patients with sinus rhythm and ventricular desynchronisation. The aim of this study was to evaluate interventricular conduction delay (IVCD) and interatrial conduction delay (IACD) before and after premature ventricular contractions (PVC) in HF patients.
Methods: 13 HF patients (age 68 ± 10 years; 2 females, 11 males) with New York Heart Association functional class 2,8 ± 0.5, left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction 28,6 ± 12,6 %, 154 ± 25 ms QRS duration and PVC were analysed with bipolar transesophageal LV and left atrial electrogram recording and National Instruments LabView 2009 software. The level of significance of the t-test is 0,005.
Results: QRS duration increases during PVC (188 ± 32 ms) in comparison to the beat before (154 ± 25 ms, P = ) and after PVC (152 ± 25 ms,). IVCD increases during PVC up to 65 ± 33 ms (51 ± 19 ms in the beat before PVC, P=0.18, 49 ± 19 ms after PVC, P = 0.12). Intra-LV delay of 90 ± 16 ms is not different in the beat before PVC, 90 ± 14 ms during PVC (P = 0.99) and 94 ± 16 ms in the beat after PVC (P = 0.38). IACD is not significantly PVC influenced (67 ± 12 ms before PVC and 65 ± 13 ms after PVC, P = 0.71). Intra-left atrial conduction delay is not significant longer during PVC (57 ± 28 ms) than in the beat before PVC (54 ± 13 ms, P = 0.51) or after PVC (54 ± 8 ms, P = 0.45). PQ duration increases significantly after PVC (224 ± 95 ms) in comparison to the beat before PVC (176± 29 ms, P =...).
Conclusion: Transesophageal left cardiac electrocardiography with LabView 2009 software can improve evaluation of IVCD and IACD before, during and after PVC in HF patient selection for CRT.
Human-robot collaboration plays a strong role in industrial production processes. The ISO/TS 15066 defines four different methods of collaboration between humans and robots. So far, there was no robotic system available that incorporates all four collaboration methods at once. Especially for the speed and separation monitoring, there was no sensor system available that can easily be attached directly to an off-the-shelf industrial robot arm and that is capable of detecting obstacles in distances from a few millimeters up to five meters. This paper presented first results of using a 3D time-of-flight camera directly on an industrial robot arm for obstacle detection in human-robot collaboration. We attached a Visionary-T camera from SICK to the flange of a KUKA LBR iiwa 7 R800. With Matlab, we evaluated the pictures and found that it works very well for detecting obstacles in a distance range starting from 0.5 m and up to 5 m.
Towards a gamification of industrial production: a comparative study in sheltered work environments

Using video game elements to improve user experience and user engagement in non-game applications is called "gamification". This method of enriching human-computer interaction has been applied successfully in education, health and general business processes. However, it has not been established in industrial production so far.
After discussing the requirements specific for the production domain we present two workplaces augmented with gamification. Both implementations are based on a common framework for context-aware assistive systems but exemplify different approaches: the visualization of work performance is complex in System 1 and simple in System 2.
Based on two studies in sheltered work environments with impaired workers, we analyze and compare the systems' effects on work and on workers. We show that gamification leads to a speed-accuracy-tradeoff if no quality-related feedback is provided. Another finding is that there is a highly significant raise in acceptance if a straightforward visualization approach for gamification is used.
Towards a Formal Verification of Seamless Cryptographic Rekeying in Real-Time Communication Systems

This paper makes two contributions to the verification of communication protocols by transition systems. Firstly, the paper presents a modeling of a cyclic communication protocol using a synchronized network of transition systems. This protocol enables seamless cryptographic rekeying embedded into cyclic messages. Secondly, we test the protocol using the model checking verification technique.
In this paper we report on the commercial background as well as resulting high-level architecture and design of a cloud-based system for cryptographic software protection and licensing. This is based on the experiences and insights gained in the context of a real-world commercial R&D project at Wibu-Systems AG, a company that specialises in software encryption and licensing solutions.
HiSiMo cast irons are frequently used as material for high temperature components in engines as e.g. exhaust manifolds and turbo chargers. These components must withstand severe cyclic mechanical and thermal loads throughout their life cycle. The combination of thermal transients with mechanical load cycles results in a complex evolution of damage, leading to thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) of the material and, after a certain number of loading cycles, to failure of the component. In Part I of the paper, a fracture mechanics model for TMF life prediction was developed based on results of uniaxial tests. In this paper (Part II), the model is formulated for three-dimensional stress states, so that it can be applied in a post-processing step of a finite-element analysis. To obtain reliable stresses and (time dependent plastic) strains in the finite-element calculation, a time and temperature dependent plasticity model is applied which takes non-linear kinematic hardening into account. The material properties of the model are identified from the results of the uniaxial test. The plasticity model and the TMF life model are applied to assess the lifetime of an exhaust manifold.

On the basis of the experimental results a fatigue life model is developed which is based on elastic, plastic and creep fracture mechanics results of short cracks, so that time and temperature dependent effects on damage are taken into account. The model can be used to estimate the fatigue life of components by means of finite-element calculations (Part II of the paper).
HPTLC (High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography) is a well known and versatile separation method which shows many advantages when compared to other separation techniques. The method is fast and inexpensive and does not need time-consuming pretreatments. For visualisation of the sample distribution on a HPTLC-plate we developed a new and sturdy HPTLC-scanner. The scanner allows simultaneous registrations of spectra in a range from 198 nm to 612 nm with a spectral resolution of better than 0.8 nm. The on-plate spatial resolution is better than 160 μm. The measurement of 450 spectra in one separation track does not need more than two minutes. The new diode-array scanner offers a fast survey over a TLC-separation and makes various chemometric applications possible. For compound identification a cross-correlation function is described to compare UV sample spectra with appropriate library data. The cross-correlation function herein described can also be used for purity testing. Unresolved peaks can be virtually separated by use of a least squares fit algorithm. In summary, the diode arry system delivers much more information than the commonly used TLC-scanner.
Ranging errors are inevitable in all local positioning systems, including those based on Time-of-Flight (ToF) technique. Results of experiments show that the major cause for these errors is a signal degradation from multipath propagation. This effect is especially critical in case of Non-Light-of-Sight (NLOS) conditions. This paper describes causes that affects ranging errors for nanoLOC™-TOF-technology and presents estimations for the probability density functions of such errors under different NLOS conditions. The provided estimations allow the improvement of the accuracy of the localization through the subsequent mitigation of the ranging errors from the measurements. Additionally, it is proposed to increase the number of cases of NLOS-conditions for the improvement of the accuracy.
The Effect of Gamification on Emotions - The Potential of Facial Recognition in Work Environmentsns

Gamification means using video game elements to improve user experience and user engagement in non-game services and applications. This article describes the effects when gamification is used in work contexts. Here we focus on industrial production. We describe how facial recognition can be employed to measure and quantify the effect of gamification on the users’ emotions.
The quantitative results show that gamification significantly reduces both task completion time and error rate. However, the results concerning the effect on emotions are surprising. Without gamification there are not only more unhappy expressions (as to expect) but surprisingly also more happy expressions. Both findings are statistically highly significant.
We think that in redundant production work there are generally more (negative) emotions involved. When there is no gamification happy and unhappy balance each other. In contrast gamification seems to shift the spectrum of moods towards “relaxed”. Especially for work environments such a calm attitude is a desirable effect on the users. Thus our findings support the use of gamification.
One of the main requirements of spatially distributed Internet of Things (IoT) solutions is to have networks with wider coverage to connect many low-power devices. Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWAN) and Cellular IoT(cIOT) networks are promising candidates in this space. LPWAN approaches are based on enhanced physical layer (PHY) implementations to achieve long range such as LoRaWAN, SigFox, MIOTY. Narrowband versions of cellular network offer reduced bandwidth and, simplified node and network management mechanisms, such as Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) and Long-Term Evolution for Machines (LTE-M). Since the underlying use cases come with various requirements it is essential to perform a comparative analysis of competing technologies. This article provides systematic performance measurement and comparison of LPWAN and NB-IoT technologies in a unified testbed, also discusses the necessity of future fifth generation (5G) LPWAN solutions.
Die Veränderungen in der Energieversorgung führen zu einer neuen Systemarchitektur der Stromversorgung, die nur durch einen massiven Einsatz von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) bewältigt werden kann und meist als „Smart Grid“ bezeichnet wird. Während es bereits umfangreiche Forschungsarbeiten und Demonstrationsprojekte zu einzelnen technologischen Komponenten gibt, existieren noch wenige Überlegungen, in welchen technologischen Schritten eine Migration hin zu Smart Grids durchgeführt werden sollte, die sowohl betriebstechnisch zukunftssicher ist, als auch marktgetriebene Innovationen begünstigt. Der Beitrag veranschaulicht die Herleitung solcher Migrationspfade im Rahmen eines schrittweisen Vorgehens. Zunächst werden Zukunftsszenarien für das Jahr 2030 konstruiert, um die maßgeblichen, oft auch nichttechnischen Einflussfaktoren auf das Smart Grid zu identifizieren. Darauf aufbauend werden die wesentlichen IKT-bezogenen Technologiefelder und ihre Zuordnung zu den Domänen der Energiewirtschaft beschrieben. Für jedes Technologiefeld werden die in den nächsten zwei Jahrzehnten denkbaren Entwicklungsstufen ermittelt und deren Abhängigkeit untereinander analysiert. Die gemeinsame Betrachtung von Szenarien, der Entwicklungsstufen der Technologiefelder und deren Interdependenzen führen schließlich zu einer Roadmap, welche die Migrationspfade in das Smart Grid beschreiben. Es lassen sich drei Entwicklungsphasen erkennen: Die Konzeptionsphase, die Integrationsphase und die Fusionsphase. Die präsentierten Ergebnisse entstammen dem Projekt „Future Energy Grid – Migrationspfade ins Internet“, welches vom Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie im Rahmen des E-Energy-Programms (Förderkennzeichen 01ME10012A und 01ME10013) gefördert wurde.
Machine learning (ML) has become highly relevant in applications across all industries, and specialists in the field are sought urgently. As it is a highly interdisciplinary field, requiring knowledge in computer science, statistics and the relevant application domain, experts are hard to find. Large corporations can sweep the job market by offering high salaries, which makes the situation for small and medium enterprises (SME) even worse, as they usually lack the capacities both for attracting specialists and for qualifying their own personnel. In order to meet the enormous demand in ML specialists, universities now teach ML in specifically designed degree programs as well as within established programs in science and engineering. While the teaching almost always uses practical examples, these are somewhat artificial or outdated, as real data from real companies is usually not available. The approach reported in this contribution aims to tackle the above challenges in an integrated course, combining three independent aspects: first, teaching key ML concepts to graduate students from a variety of existing degree programs; second, qualifying working professionals from SME for ML; and third, applying ML to real-world problems faced by those SME. The course was carried out in two trial periods within a government-funded project at a university of applied sciences in south-west Germany. The region is dominated by SME many of which are world leaders in their industries. Participants were students from different graduate programs as well as working professionals from several SME based in the region. The first phase of the course (one semester) consists of the fundamental concepts of ML, such as exploratory data analysis, regression, classification, clustering, and deep learning. In this phase, student participants and working professionals were taught in separate tracks. Students attended regular classes and lab sessions (but were also given access to e-learning materials), whereas the professionals learned exclusively in a flipped classroom scenario: they were given access to e-learning units (video lectures and accompanying quizzes) for preparation, while face-to-face sessions were dominated by lab experiments applying the concepts. Prior to the start of the second phase, participating companies were invited to submit real-world problems that they wanted to solve with the help of ML. The second phase consisted of practical ML projects, each tackling one of the problems and worked on by a mixed team of both students and professionals for the period of one semester. The teams were self-organized in the ways they preferred to work (e.g. remote vs. face-to-face collaboration), but also coached by one of the teaching staff. In several plenary meetings, the teams reported on their status as well as challenges and solutions. In both periods, the course was monitored and extensive surveys were carried out. We report on the findings as well as the lessons learned. For instance, while the program was very well-received, professional participants wished for more detailed coverage of theoretical concepts. A challenge faced by several teams during the second phase was a dropout of student members due to upcoming exams in other subjects.
Both German and French Air-Source Heat Pump (ASHP) markets have been enjoying an overall upwards trend for many years but, nevertheless, they remain merely slightly penetrated. In terms of market players and their share, the French market is aptly diversified, whereas the German one, being utterly dominated by one single manufacturer, is badly in need of some diversification. At the same time Korean ASHP manufacturers are targeting the French but not German ASHP market. The main purpose of the paper is to find out likely reasons for their one-sided engagement, primarily those associated with the ASHP technology and its system-related aspects.
Tactile Navigation with Checkpoints as Progress Indicators?: Only when Walking Longer Straight Paths

Persons with both vision and hearing impairments have to rely primarily on tactile feedback, which is frequently used in assistive devices. We explore the use of checkpoints as a way to give them feedback during navigation tasks. Particularly, we investigate how checkpoints can impact performance and user experience. We hypothesized that individuals receiving checkpoint feedback would take less time and perceive the navigation experience as superior to those who did not receive such feedback. Our contribution is two-fold: a detailed report on the implementation of a smart wearable with tactile feedback (1), and a user study analyzing its effects (2). The results show that in contrast to our assumptions, individuals took considerably more time to complete routes with checkpoints. Also, they perceived navigating with checkpoints as inferior to navigating without checkpoints. While the quantitative data leave little room for doubt, the qualitative data open new aspects: when walking straight and not being "overwhelmed" by various forms of feedback in succession, several participants actually appreciated the checkpoint feedback.
Deafblindness, also known as dual sensory loss, is the combination of sight and hearing impairments of such extent that it becomes difficult for one sense to compensate for the other. Communication issues are a key concern for the Deafblind community. We present the design and technical implementation of the Tactile Board: a mobile Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device for individuals with deafblindness. The Tactile Board allows text and speech to be translated into vibrotactile signs that are displayed real-time to the user via a haptic wearable. Our aim is to facilitate communication for the deafblind community, creating opportunities for these individuals to initiate and engage in social interactions with other people without the direct need of an intervener.

A novel approach for synchronization and calibration of a camera and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) in the research-oriented visual-inertial mapping-and localization-framework maplab is presented. Mapping and localization are based on detecting different features in the environment. In addition to the possibility of creating single-case maps, the included algorithms allow merging maps to increase mapping accuracy and obtain large-scale maps. Furthermore, the algorithms can be used to optimize the collected data. The preliminary results show that after appropriate calibration and synchronization maplab can be used efficiently for mapping, especially in rooms and small building environments.
Diffracted waves carry high resolution information that can help interpreting fine structural details at a scale smaller than the seismic wavelength. Because of the low signal-to-noise ratio of diffracted waves, it is challenging to preserve them during processing and to identify them in the final data. It is, therefore, a traditional approach to pick manually the diffractions. However, such task is tedious and often prohibitive, thus, current attention is given to domain adaptation. Those methods aim to transfer knowledge from a labeled domain to train the model, and then infer on the real unlabeled data. In this regard, it is common practice to create a synthetic labeled training dataset, followed by testing on unlabeled real data. Unfortunately, such procedure may fail due to the existing gap between the synthetic and the real distribution since quite often synthetic data oversimplifies the problem, and consequently the transfer learning becomes a hard and non-trivial procedure. Furthermore, deep neural networks are characterized by their high sensitivity towards cross-domain distribution shift. In this work, we present deep learning model that builds a bridge between both distributions creating a semi-synthetic datatset that fills in the gap between synthetic and real domains. More specifically, our proposal is a feed-forward, fully convolutional neural network for imageto-image translation that allows to insert synthetic diffractions while preserving the original reflection signal. A series of experiments validate that our approach produces convincing seismic data containing the desired synthetic diffractions.
Growing demands for cleaner production and higher eco-efficiency in process engineering require a comprehensive analysis of technical and environmental outcomes of customers and society. Moreover, unexpected additional technical or ecological drawbacks may appear as negative side effects of new environ-mentally friendly technologies. The paper conceptualizes a comprehensive ap-proach for analysis and ranking of engineering and ecological requirements in process engineering in order to anticipate secondary problems in eco-design and to avoid compromising the environmental or technological goals. For this purpose, the paper presents a method based on integration of the Quality Func-tion Deployment approach with the Importance-Satisfaction Analysis for the requirements ranking. The proposed method identifies and classifies compre-hensively the potential engineering and eco-engineering contradictions through analysis of correlations within requirements groups such as stakehold-er requirements (SRs) and technical requirements (TRs), and additionally through cross-relationship between SRs and TRs.
Gamifying rehabilitation is an efficient way to improve motivation and exercise frequency. However, between flow theory, self-determination theory or Bartle's player types there is much room for speculation regarding the mechanics required for successful gamification, which in turn leads to increased motivation. For our study, we selected a gamified solution for motion training (an exergame) where the playful design elements are extremely simple. The contribution is three-fold: we show best practices from the state of the art, present a study analyzing the effects of simple gamification mechanics on a quantitative and on a qualitative level and discuss strategies for playful design in therapeutic movement games.
Industrie 4.0 bedeutet nicht nur einen Wandel der technischen Möglichkeiten und Arbeitsbedingungen, sondern auch einen Bedarf an neuen, sich kontinuierlich weiterentwickelnden Kompetenzen und die Bereitschaft der Beschäftigten, Veränderungen mitzugestalten. Spielerische Ansätze der Kompetenzentwicklung können v.a. bei weiterbildungsfernen Mitarbeitern hilfreich sein, um das komplexe Thema verständlich zu vermitteln. Der Beitrag beschreibt ein Seminarkonzept mit integriertem Brettspiel, mit dem Teilnehmer anhand eines fiktiven Unternehmens (Müller GmbH) die Transformation eines Unternehmens in die Industrie 4.0 spielerisch nachvollziehen. Dieses Konzept erweist sich in einer ersten Evaluation als durchaus vielversprechend.
Despite the success of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in many computer vision and image analysis tasks, they remain vulnerable against so-called adversarial attacks: Small, crafted perturbations in the input images can lead to false predictions. A possible defense is to detect adversarial examples. In this work, we show how analysis in the Fourier domain of input images and feature maps can be used to distinguish benign test samples from adversarial images. We propose two novel detection methods: Our first method employs the magnitude spectrum of the input images to detect an adversarial attack. This simple and robust classifier can successfully detect adversarial perturbations of three commonly used attack methods. The second method builds upon the first and additionally extracts the phase of Fourier coefficients of feature-maps at different layers of the network. With this extension, we are able to improve adversarial detection rates compared to state-of-the-art detectors on five different attack methods. The combination of fossil-derived fuels with ethanol and methanol has acquired relevance and attention in several countries in recent years. This trend is strongly affected by market prices, constant geopolitical events, new sustainability policies, new laws and regulations, etc. Besides bio-fuels these materials also include different additives as anti-shock agents and as octane enhancer. Some of the chemical compounds in these additives may have harmful properties for both environment and public health (besides the inherent properties, like volatility). We present detailed Raman spectral information from toluene (C7H8) and ethanol (C2H6O) contained in samples of ElO gasoline-ethanol blends. The spectral information has been extracted by using a robust, high resolution Fourier-Transform Raman spectrometer (FT-Raman) prototype. This spectral information has been also compared with Raman spectra from pure additives and with standard Raman lines in order to validate its accuracy in frequency. The spectral information is presented in the range of 0 cm-1 to 3500 cm-1 with a resolution of 1.66cm-1. This allows resolving tight adjacent Raman lines like the ones observed around 1003cm-1 and 1030cm-1 (characteristic lines of toluene). The Raman spectra obtained show a reduced frequency deviation when compared to standard Raman spectra from different calibration materials. The FT-Raman spectrometer prototype used for the analysis consist basically of a Michelson interferometer and a self-designed photon counter cooled down on a Peltier element arrangement. The light coupling is achieved with conventional62.5/125μm multi-mode fibers. This FT-Raman setup is able to extract high resolution and frequency precise Raman spectra from the additives in the fuels analyzed. The proposed prototype has no additional complex hardware components or costly software modules. The mechanical and thermal disturbances affecting the FT-Raman system are mathematically compensated by accurately extracting the optical path information of the Michelson interferometer. This is accomplished by generating an additional interference pattern with a λ = 632.8 nm Helium-Neon laser (HeNe laser). It enables the FT-Raman system to perform reliable and clean spectral measurements from the materials under observation.
Targeting complex fractionated atrial electrocardiograms by automated algorithms during ablation of persistent atrial fibrillation has produced conflicting outcomes in previous electrophysiological studies and catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. The aim of the investigation was to evaluate atrial and ventricular high frequency fractionated electrical signals with signal averaging technique.
Methods: Signal averaging electrocardigraphy allows high resolution ECG technique to eliminate interference noise signals in the recorded ECG. The algorithm use automatic ECG trigger function for signal averaged transthoracic, transesophageal and intra-cardiac ECG signals with novel LabVIEW software.
Results: The analysis in the time domain evaluated fractionated atrial signals at the end of the signal averaged P-wave and fractionated ventricular signals at the end of the QRS complex. We evaluated atrial flutter in the time domain with two-to-one atrioventricular conduction, 212.0 ± 4.1 ms atrial cycle length, 426.0 ± 8.2 ms ventricular cycle length, 58.2 ± 1.8 ms P-wave duration, 119.6 ± 6.4 ms PQ duration, 103.0 ± 2.4 ms QRS duration and 296.4 ± 6.8 ms QT duration. The analysis in the frequency domain evaluated high frequency fractionated atrial signals during the P-wave and high frequency fractionated ventricular signals during QRS complex.
Conclusions: Spectral analysis of signal averaging electrocardiography with novel LabVIEW software can be utilized to evaluate atrial and ventricular conduction delays in patients with atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. Complex fractionated atrial and ventricular electrocardiograms may be useful parameters to evaluate electrical cardiac bradycardia and tachycardia signals in atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia ablation.
The industry of the agave-derived bacanora, in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, has been growing substantially in recent years. However, this higher demand still lies under the influences of a variety of social, legal, cultural, ecological and economic elements. The governmental institutions of the state have tried to encourage a sustainable development and certain levels of standardization in the production of bacanora by applying different economical and legal strategies. However, a large portion of this alcoholic beverage is still produced in a traditional and rudimentary fashion. Beyond the quality of the beverage, the lack of proper control, by using adequate instrumental methods, might represent a health risk, as in several cases traditional-distilled beverages can contain elevated levels of harmful materials. The present article describes the qualitative spectral analysis of samples of the traditional-produced distilled beverage bacanora in the range from 0 cm−1 to 3500 cm−1 by using a Fourier Transform Raman spectrometer. This particular technique has not been previously explored for the analysis of bacanora, as in the case of other beverages, including tequila. The proposed instrumental arrangement for the spectral analysis has been built by combining conventional hardware parts (Michelson interferometer, photo-diodes, visible laser, etc.) and a set of self-developed evaluation algorithms. The resulting spectral information has been compared to those of pure samples of ethanol and to the spectra from different samples of the alcoholic beverage tequila. The proposed instrumental arrangement can be used the analysis of bacanora.
We propose in this work to solve privacy preserving set relations performed by a third party in an outsourced configuration. We argue that solving the disjointness relation based on Bloom filters is a new contribution in particular by having another layer of privacy on the sets cardinality. We propose to compose the set relations in a slightly different way by applying a keyed hash function. Besides discussing the correctness of the set relations, we analyze how this impacts the privacy of the sets content as well as providing privacy on the sets cardinality. We are in particular interested in how having bits overlapping in the Bloom filters impacts the privacy level of our approach. Finally, we present our results with real-world parameters in two concrete scenarios.
Für die solarunterstützte CO2-neutrale Nahwärmeversorgung des Neubaugebiets Hülben in Holzgerlingen wurden Holzpelletskessel mit einer 249m²-großen Solaranlage kombiniert. Im ersten Intensivmessjahr vom 01.03.2007 bis 29.02.2008 wurde eine Gesamt-Wärmeabgabe ins Nahwärmenetz von 920.606 kWh gemessen, wobei der solare Anteil bei 84.033 kWh lag. Es wurden ein Systemnutzungsgrad von 23,8 % und ein solarer Deckungsanteil von 9,5% gemessen. Die vom Lieferanten abgegebene Energiegarantie wurde in der ersten Intensivmessphase nicht erreicht.
Due to the rapidly increasing storage consumption worldwide, as well as the expectation of continuous availability of information, the complexity of administration in today’s data centers is growing permanently. Integrated techniques for monitoring hard disks can increase the reliability of storage systems. However, these techniques often lack intelligent data analysis to perform predictive maintenance. To solve this problem, machine learning algorithms can be used to detect potential failures in advance and prevent them. In this paper, an unsupervised model for predicting hard disk failures based on Isolation Forest is proposed. Consequently, a method is presented that can deal with the highly imbalanced datasets, as the experiment on the Backblaze benchmark dataset demonstrates.
The twin concept is increasingly used for optimization tasks in the context of Industry 4.0 and digitization. The twin concept can also help small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) to exploit their energy flexibility potential and to achieve added value by appropriate energy marketing. At the same time, this use of flexibility helps to realize a climate-neutral energy supply with high shares of renewable energies. The digital twin reflects real production, power flows and market influences as a computer model, which makes it possible to simulate and optimize on-site interventions and interactions with the energy market without disturbing the real production processes. This paper describes the development of a generic model library that maps flexibility-relevant components and processes of SME, thus simplifying the creation of a digital twin. The paper also includes the development of an experimental twin consisting of SME hardware components and a PLC-based SCADA system. The experimental twin provides a laboratory environment in which the digital twin can be tested, further developed and demonstrated on a laboratory scale. Concrete implementations of such a digital twin and experimental twin are described as examples.
With major intellectual properties there is a long tradition of cross-media value chains -- usually starting with books and comics, then transgressing to film and TV and finally reaching interactive media like video games. In recent years the situation has changed: (1) smaller productions start to establish cross media value chains; (2) there is a trend from sequential towards parallel content production. In this work we describe how the production of a historic documentary takes a cross media approach right from the start. We analyze how this impacts the content creation pipelines with respect to story, audience and realization. The focus of the case study is the impact on the production of a documentary game. In a second step we reflect on the experiences gained so far and derive recommendations for future small-scale cross media productions.

Multiple systems are available that can detect obstacles in the robot's way prior and subsequent to a collision. The systems work well in different areas surrounding the robot. One area that is difficult to handle is the area that is hidden by the robot arm. This paper focuses on pick and place maneuvers, especially on obstacle detection in between the robot arm and the table that robot is located on. It introduces the use of single pixel time-of-flight sensors to detect obstacles directly from the robot arm. The proposed approach reduces the complexity of the problem by locking axes of the robot that are not needed for the pick and place movement. The comparison of simulated results and laboratory measurements show concordance.
Background: The electrical field (E-field) of the biventricular (BV) stimulation is essential for the success of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients with cardiac insufficiency and widened QRS complex. 3D modeling allows the simulation of CRT and high frequency (HF) ablation.
Purpose: The aim of the study was to model different pacing and ablation electrodes and to integrate them into a heart model for the static and dynamic simulation of BV stimulation and HF ablation in atrial fibrillation (AF).
Methods: The modeling and simulation was carried out using the electromagnetic simulation software. Five multipolar left ventricular (LV) electrodes, one epicardial LV electrode, four bipolar right atrial (RA) electrodes, two right ventricular (RV) electrodes and one HF ablation catheter were modeled. Different models of electrodes were integrated into a heart rhythm model for the electrical field simulation (fig.1). The simulation of an AV node ablation at CRT was performed with RA, RV and LV electrodes and integrated ablation catheter with an 8 mm gold tip.
Results: The RV and LV stimulation were performed simultaneously at amplitude of 3 V at the LV electrode and 1 V at the RV electrode, each with a pulse width of 0.5 ms. The far-field potentials generated by the BV stimulations were perceived by the RA electrode. The far-field potential at the RA electrode tip was 32.86 mV. A far-field potential of 185.97 mV resulted at a distance of 1 mm from the RA electrode tip. AV node ablation was simulated with an applied power of 5 W at 420 kHz at the distal 8 mm ablation electrode. The temperature at the catheter tip was 103.87 ° C after 5 s ablation time, 44.17 ° C from the catheter tip in the myocardium and 37.61 ° C at a distance of 2 mm. After 10 s, the temperature at the three measuring points described above was 107.33 ° C, 50.87 ° C, 40.05 ° C and after 15 seconds 118.42 ° C, 55.75 ° C and 42.13 ° C.
Conclusions: Virtual heart and electrode models as well as the simulations of electrical fields and temperature profiles allow the static and dynamic simulation of atrial synchronous BV stimulation and HF ablation at AF. The 3D simulation of the electrical field and temperature profile may be used to optimize the CRT and AF ablation.
Significance of new electrocardiographic parameters to improve cardiac resynchronization therapy

Introduction: Oesophageal left heart electrogram (LHE) is a valuable tool providing electrocardiographic parameters for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). It can be utilized to measure left ventricular (LVCD) and intra-leftventricular conduction delays (ILVCD) in heart failure patients to justify implantation of CRT systems. In the follow-up, LHE enables measurement of implant-related interatrial conduction times (IACT) which are the key intervals defining the hemodynamically optimal AV delay (AVD).
Methods: By TOSlim oesophageal electrode and Rostockfilter (Osypka AG, Rheinfelden, Germany), LHE was recorded in 39 heart failure patients (10f, 29m, 65±8yrs., QRS=163±21ms) after implantation of CRT systems according to guidelines. In position of maximal left ventricular deflection, LVCD and ILVCD were measured and compared with QRS width. In position of maximal left atrial deflection (LA), IACT was determined in VDD and DDD operation as interval As-LA and Ap-LA between atrial sense event (As) or stimulus (Ap), resp., and onset of LA. AVD was individualized using SAV =As-LA + 50ms for VDD and PAV=Ap-LA + 50ms for DDD operation.
Results: The CRT patients were characterized by minimal transoesophageal LVCD of 40ms but 73±20ms, at mean, ILVCD of 90±24ms and QRS/LVCD ratio of 2.4±0.6. The measured As-LA of 39±24ms and Ap-LA of 124±26ms resulted into SAV of 89±24ms and PAV of 174±26ms. In case of empirical AVD programming using 120ms for SAV and 180ms for PAV, the LHE revealed inverse sequences of LA and Vp in 4 patients (10%) during VDD and 13 patients (33%) in DDD pacing. In these patients, Vp preceded LA as IACT exceeded the programmed AVD.
Conclusion: Guideline indication of CRT systems is associated with LVCD of 40ms or more. Therefore, individual LVCD offers the minimal target interval that should be reached during left ventricular electrode placement to increase responder rate. Postoperatively, AV delay optimization respecting implant-related IACTs excludes adverse hemodynamic effects.

Introduction: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with left ventricular (LV) pacing is an established therapy for heart failure (HF) patients (P) with ventricular desynchronisation and reduced LV ejection fraction (EF). The aim of this study was to test the utilization of the transesophageal approach to measure arterial pulse pressure (PP) during LV pacing and electrical interventricular conduction delay (IVCD), to better select patients for CRT.
Methods: 32 HF patients (age 64 ± 10 years; 5 females, 27 males) with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class 2.8 ± 0.6, 27 ± 11 % LV EF and 155 ± 35 ms QRS duration were analysed with semi-invasive left cardiac pacing and electrocardiography. Esophageal TO8 Osypka catheter of 10.5 F diameter was perorally applied to the esophagus and placed in the position of maximum left atrial (LA) deflection and maximum LV deflection to measure PP with VAT or D00 pacing modes.
Results: Temporary transesophageal LV pacing was possible with VAT mode (n=16) and D00 mode (n=16) in all patients. In 15 Δ-PP-responders, PP was higher during LV pacing on than LV pacing off (78.3 ± 26.6 versus 65.9 ± 23.7 mmHg, P < 0.001) and NYHA class improved from 3.1 ± 0.35 to 2.1 ± 0.35 (P < 0.001) during 29 ± 26 month biventricular (BV) pacing follow-up (6 Medtronic and 9 Boston BV pacing devices). In 17 Δ-PP-non-responders, PP was not higher during LV pacing on than LV pacing off (61.5 ± 23.9 versus 60.9 ± 23.5 mmHg, P = 0.066). IVCD was significant longer in Δ-PP-responders than in Δ-PP-non-responders (87 ± 33 ms versus 37± 29 ms, P < 0.001).
Conclusion: Semi-invasive transesophageale LA and LV pacing with D00 and VAT mode and LV electrogram recording may be useful techniques to predict CRT improvement.
Semi-invasive electromechanical target interval to guide left ventricular electrode placement

Using guideline parameters for indication of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), only about two thirds of the patients improve clinically. Unfortunately both, surface ECG and echo are uncertain to predict CRT response. To better characterize cardiac desynchronization in heart failure, interventricular (IVCD) and intra-leftventricular conduction delays (ILVCD) were measured by esophageal left ventricular electrogram (LVE). Recordings in 43 CRT patients (34m, 9f, age: 64.7 ± 9.5yrs) evidenced only weak correlation between IVCD and QRS of 0.53 and between ILVCD and QRS of 0.33. This demonstrated that QRS duration is not a reliable indicator of desynchronization. Therefore, the study resulted into development of LVE feature for a programmer with implant support device. It can be used interoperatively to guide the left ventricular electrode location in order to increase responder rate in CRT.
The provisioning of security for highly dynamic wireless networks, as for Car2X applications is still a major topic, as very specific requirements have to be solved. Those include a perfect privacy level and advanced real-time behavior, and the necessity to work with a public infrastructure (PKI) to support secure authentication.
This contribution analyzes these requirements, discusses the existing approaches, performs a gap analysis and elaborates on proposals to fill these gaps. It describes work in progress within the KoFAS-initiative for the development of a cooperative pedestrian protection system (CPPS).
The number of use cases for autonomous vehicles is increasing day by day especially in commercial applications. One important application of autonomous vehicles can be found within the parcel delivery section. Here, autonomous cars can massively help to reduce delivery efforts and time by supporting the courier actively. One important component of course is the autonomous vehicle itself. Nevertheless, beside the autonomous vehicle, a flexible and secure communication architecture also is a crucial key component impacting the overall performance of such system since it is required to allow continuous interactions between the vehicle and the other components of the system. The communication system must provide a reliable and secure architecture that is still flexible enough to remain practical and to address several use cases. In this paper, a robust communication architecture for such autonomous fleet-based systems is proposed. The architecture provides a reliable communication between different system entities while keeping those communications secure. The architecture uses different technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), cellular networks and Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) to achieve its goals.
Most machine learning methods require careful selection of hyper-parameters in order to train a high performing model with good generalization abilities. Hence, several automatic selection algorithms have been introduced to overcome tedious manual (try and error) tuning of these parameters. Due to its very high sample efficiency, Bayesian Optimization over a Gaussian Processes modeling of the parameter space has become the method of choice. Unfortunately, this approach suffers from a cubic compute complexity due to underlying Cholesky factorization, which makes it very hard to be scaled beyond a small number of sampling steps. In this paper, we present a novel, highly accurate approximation of the underlying Gaussian Process. Reducing its computational complexity from cubic to quadratic allows an efficient strong scaling of Bayesian Optimization while outperforming the previous approach regarding optimization accuracy. First experiments show speedups of a factor of 162 in single node and further speed up by a factor of 5 in a parallel environment.
The growing complexity in RF front-ends, which support carrier aggregation and a growing number of frequency bands, leads to tightened nonlinearity requirements in all sub-components. The generation of third order intermodulation products (IMD3) are typical problems caused by the non-linearity of SAW devices. In the present work, we investigate temperature compensating (TC) SAW devices on Lithium Niobate-rot128YX. An accurate FEM simulation model [1] is employed, which allows to better understand the origin of nonlinearities in such acoustic devices.
Ripple: Overview and Outlook

Ripple is a payment system and a digital currency which evolved completely independently of Bitcoin. Although Ripple holds the second highest market cap after Bitcoin, there are surprisingly no studies which analyze the provisions of Ripple.
In this paper, we study the current deployment of the Ripple payment system. For that purpose, we overview the Ripple protocol and outline its security and privacy provisions in relation to the Bitcoin system. We also discuss the consensus protocol of Ripple. Contrary to the statement of the Ripple designers, we show that the current choice of parameters does not prevent the occurrence of forks in the system. To remedy this problem, we give a necessary and sufficient condition to prevent any fork in the system. Finally, we analyze the current usage patterns and trade dynamics in Ripple by extracting information from the Ripple global ledger. As far as we are aware, this is the first contribution which sheds light on the current deployment of the Ripple system.
The uncertain and time-variant nature of renewable energy results in the need to deal with peaks in the production of energy. One approach is to achieve a load shift and thereby help balancing the grid by using thermally Activated Building Systems (TABS). Control systems currently in place do not exploit the full potential of TABS. This paper reviews how Model Predictive Control can possibly reduce the fluctuations of the demand and supply of (renewable) energy as it enables the TABS to react to the dynamics of weather and its impact on the grid at any time.
This work discusses several use cases of post-mortem mobile device tracking in which privacy is required e.g. due to client-confidentiality agreements and sensibility of data from government agencies as well as mobile telecommunication providers. We argue that our proposed Bloomfilter based privacy approach is a valuable technical building block for the arising General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements in this area. In short, we apply a solution based on the Bloom filters data structure that allows a 3rd party to performsome privacy saving setrelations on a mobiletelco’s access logfile or other mobile access logfile from harvesting parties without revealing any other mobile users in the proximity of a mobile base station but still allowing to track perpetrators.
RETIS – Real-Time Sensitive Wireless Communication Solution for Industrial Control Applications

Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC) has been always a vital component of many industrial applications. The paper proposes a new wireless URLLC solution called RETIS, which is suitable for factory automation and fast process control applications, where low latency, low jitter, and high data exchange rates are mandatory. In the paper, we describe the communication protocol as well as the hardware structure of the network nodes for implementing the required functionality. Many techniques enabling fast, reliable wireless transmissions are used – short Transmission Time Interval (TTI), Time-Division Multiple Access (TDMA), MIMO, optional duplicated data transfer, Forward Error Correction (FEC), ACK mechanism. Preliminary tests show that reliable end-to-end latency down to 350 μs and packet exchange rate up to 4 kHz can be reached (using quadruple MIMO and standard IEEE 802.15.4 PHY at 250 kbit/s).
With the increasing degree of interconnectivity in industrial factories, security becomes more and more the most important stepping-stone towards wide adoption of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). This paper summarizes the most important aspects of one keynote of DESSERT2020 conference. It highlights the ongoing and open research activities on the different levels, from novel cryptographic algorithms over security protocol integration and testing to security architectures for the full lifetime of devices and systems. It includes an overview of the research activities at the authors' institute.
This paper explains the realization of a concept for research-oriented photonics education. Using the example of the integration of an actual PhD project, it is shown how students are familiarized with the topic of research and scientific work in the first semesters. Typical research activities are included as essential parts of the learning process. Research should be made visible and tangible for the students. The authors will present all aspects of the learning environment, their impressions and experiences with the implemented scenario, as well as first evaluation results of the students.
Our university carries out various research projects. Among others, the project Schluckspecht is an interdisciplinary work on different ultra-efficient car concepts for international contests. Besides the engineering work, one part of the project deals with real-time data visualization. In order to increase the efficiency of the vehicle, an online monitoring of the runtime parameters is necessary. The driving parameters of the vehicle are transmitted to a processing station via a wireless network connection. We plan to use an augmented reality (AR) application to visualize different data on top of the view of the real car. By utilizing a mobile Android or iOS device a user can interactively view various real-time and statistical data. The car and its components are meant to be augmented by various additional information, whereby that information should appear at the correct position of the components. An engine e.g. could show the current rpm and consumption values. A battery on the other hand could show the current charge level. The goal of this paper is to evaluate different possible approaches, their suitability and to expand our application to other projects at our university.
Remote code attestation protocols are an essential building block to offer a reasonable system security for wireless embedded devices. In the work at hand we investigate in detail the trustability of a purely software-based remote code attestation based inference mechanism over the wireless when e.g. running the prominent protocol derivate SoftWare-based ATTestation for Embedded Devices (SWATT). Besides the disclosure of pitfalls of such a protocol class we also point out good parameter choices which allow at least a meaningful plausibility check with a balanced false positive and false negative ratio.
