Vortex breakdown phenomena in rotating fluids are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The fluid is contained in a cone between two spherical surfaces. The primary swirling motion is induced ba the rotating lower boundary. The upper surface can be fixed with non-slip condition or can be a stress-free surface. Depending on these boundary conditions and on the Reynolds number, novel structures of recirculation zones are realized. The axisymmetric flow patterns are simulated numerically by a finite difference method. Experiments are done to visualize the topological structure of the flow pattern and to observe the existence ranges of the different recirculating flows. The comparison between theory and experiment shows good agreement with respect to the topological structure of the flow.
Voice User Experience
(2023)
Nowadays the processing power of mobile phones, Smart phones and PDA is increasing, as well as the transmission bandwidth. Nevertheless there is still the need to reduce the content and the need of processing the data. Proposals and solutions for dynamic reduction of the transmitted content will be discussed. For that, device specific properties will be taken into account, aiming at reducing the need of processing power at the client side to display the 3D Virtual Reality data. Therefore, well known technologies like data compression are combined with new approaches to achieve the goal of adaptive content transmission. For device dependant reduction of processing power the data has to be pre-processed at the server side or the server itself has to take over functionality of weak mobile devices.
The importance of machine learning (ML) has been increasing dramatically for years. From assistance systems to production optimisation to healthcare support, almost every area of daily life and industry is coming into contact with machine learning. Besides all the benefits ML brings, the lack of transparency and difficulty in creating traceability pose major risks. While solutions exist to make the training of machine learning models more transparent, traceability is still a major challenge. Ensuring the identity of a model is another challenge, as unnoticed modification of a model is also a danger when using ML. This paper proposes to create an ML Birth Certificate and ML Family Tree secured by blockchain technology. Important information about training and changes to the model through retraining can be stored in a blockchain and accessed by any user to create more security and traceability about an ML model.
Additive manufacturing offers completely new production technologies thanks to the layered structure and the simultaneous processing of several materials. In order to exploit the potential of this new technology, it is already necessary in product development to consider the components no longer as monolithic blocks, but as a structure of many layers and individual elements (voxels). Therefore, this paper will examine the current state of voxel-based CAD systems and the subsequent 3D multi-material printing of the designed components. Different voxel-based CAD systems are used and analyzed for component design and a sample component is additively manufactured. The results show that simple components can be designed using voxel-based CAD systems. With the application of 3D multi-material printing, different materials and thus functions can be assigned to the designed voxel-based CAD-model.
A method for evaluating skin cancer detection based on millimeter-wave technologies is presented. For this purpose, the relative permittivities are calculated using the effective medium theory for the benign and cancerous lesion, considering the change in water content between them. These calculated relative permittivities are further used for the simulation and evaluation of skin cancer detection using a substrate-integrated waveguide probe. A difference in the simulated scattering parameters S 11 of up to 13dB between healthy and cancerous skin can be determined in the best-case.
In this study, an approach to a microwave-based radar system for the localization of objects has been proposed. This could be particularly useful in microwave imaging applications such as cardiac catheter detection. An experimental system is defined and realized with the selection of an appropriate antenna design. Hardware control functions and different imaging algorithms are implemented as well. The functionality of this measurement setup has been analyzed considering multiple testscenarios and it is proved to be capable of locating multiple objects as well as expanded objects.
As industrial networks continue to expand and connect more devices and users, they face growing security challenges such as unauthorized access and data breaches. This paper delves into the crucial role of security and trust in industrial networks and how trust management systems (TMS) can mitigate malicious access to these networks. The TMS presented in this paper leverages distributed ledger technology (blockchain) to evaluate the trustworthiness of blockchain nodes, including devices and users, and make access decisions accordingly. While this approach is applicable to blockchain, it can also be extended to other areas. This approach can help prevent malicious actors from penetrating industrial networks and causing harm. The paper also presents the results of a simulation to demonstrate the behavior of the TMS and provide insights into its effectiveness.
With recent developments in the Ukrainian-Russian conflict, many are discussing about Germany’s dependency on fossil fuel imports in its energy system, and how can the country proceed with reducing that dependency. With its wide-ranging consumption sectors, the electricity sector comes as the perfect choice to start with. Recent reports showed that the German federal government is already intending to have a fully renewable electricity by 2035 while exploiting all possible clean power options. This was published in the federal government’s climate emergency program (Easter Package) in early 2022. The aim of this package is to initiate a rapid transition and decarbonization of the electricity sector. The Easter Package expects an enormous growth of renewable energies to a completely new level, with already at least 80% renewable gross energy consumption, with extensive and broad deployment of different generation technologies on various scales. This paper will discuss this ambitious plan and outline some insights into this huge and rapidly increasing step, and show how much will Germany need in order to achieve this huge milestone towards a fully green supply of the electricity sector. Different scenarios and shares of renewables will be investigated in order to elaborate on preponed climate-neutral goal of the electricity sector by 2035. The results pointed out some promising aspects in achieving a 100% renewable power, with massive investments in both generation and storage technologies.
We consider large scale Peer-to-Peer Sensor Networks, which try to calculate and distribute the mean value of all sensor inputs. For this we design, simulate and evaluate distributed approximation algorithms which reduce the number of messages. The main difference of these algorithms is the underlying communication protocol which all use the random call model, where in discrete round model each node can call a random sensor node with uniform probability. The amount of data exchanged between sensor nodes and used in the calculation process affects the accuracy of the aggregation results leading to a trade-off situation. The key idea of our algorithms is to limit the sample size using the Finite Population Correction (FPC) method and collect the data using a distribution aggregation using Push-Pull Sampling, Pull Sampling, and Push Sampling communication protocols. It turns out that all methods show exponential improvement of Mean Squared Error (MSE) with the number of messages and rounds.

Turbocharger housings in internal combustion engines are subjected to severe mechanical and thermal cyclic loads throughout their life-time or during engine testing. The combination of thermal transients and mechanical load cycling results in a complex evolution of damage, leading to thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) of the material. For the computational TMF life assessment of high temperature components, the DTMF model can provide reliable TMF life predictions. The model is based on a short fatigue crack growth law and uses local finite-element (FE) results to predict the number of cycles to failure for a technical crack. In engine applications, it is nowadays often acceptable to have short cracks as long as they do not propagate and cause loss of function of the component. Thus, it is necessary to predict not only potential crack locations and the corresponding number of cycles for a technical crack, but also to determine subsequent crack growth or even a possible crack arrest. In this work, a method is proposed that allows the simulation of TMF crack growth in high temperature components using FE simulations and non-linear fracture mechanics (NLFM).
A NLFM based crack growth simulation method is described. This method starts with the FE analysis of a component. In this paper, the method is demonstrated for an automotive turbocharger housing subjected to TMF loading. A transient elastic-viscoplastic FE analysis is used to simulate four heating and cooling cycles of an engine test. The stresses, inelastic strains, and temperature histories from the FEA are then used to perform TMF life predictions using the standard DTMF model. The crack position and the crack plane of critical hotspots are then identified. Simulated cracks are inserted at the hotspots. For the model demonstrated, cracks were inserted at two hotspot locations. The ΔJ integral is computed as a fracture mechanics parameter at each point along the crack-front, and the crack extension of each point is then evaluated, allowing the crack to grow iteratively. The paper concludes with a comparison of the crack growth curves for both hotspots with experimental results.
Temperature regulation is an important component for modern high performance single -core and multi-core processors. Especially high operating frequencies and architectures with an increasing number of monolithically integrated transistors result in a high power dissipation and - since processor chips convert the consumed electrical energy into thermal energy - in high operating temperatures. High operating temperatures of processors can have drastic consequences regarding chip reliability, processor performance, and leakage currents. External components like fans or heat spreaders can help to reduce the processor temperature - with the disadvantage of additional costs and reduced reliability. Therefore, software based algorithms for dynamic temperature management are an attractive alternative and well known as Dynamic Thermal Management (DTM). However, the existing approaches for DTM are not taking into account the requirements of real-time embedded computing, which is the objective in the given project. The first steps are the profiling and the thermal modeling of the system, which is reported in this paper for a Freescale i. MX6Q quad-core microprocessor. An analytical model is developed and verified by an extensive set of measurement runs.

This year the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg produly hosted the third event (EPB3).
An investigation is underway regarding the usefulness of altazimuth-mounting telescopes' incorporation of laser gyros for pointing and fiber gyros with extremely small random-walk coefficient for telescope inertial stabilization during tracking. A star tracker is expected to help stabilize long-term gyro bias. Gyro and telescope specifications have been derived by means of computer simulations and systems analyses.
Visual programming languages (VPL) let users develop software programs by combining visual program elements, like lists of objects, loops or conditional statements rather than by specifying them textually.
Humanoid robots programming is a very attractive and motivating application domain for students, especially for programming beginners. Humanoid robots are constructed in such a way that they mimic the human body by using actuators that perform like muscles. Typically, a humanoid robot consists of sensors and actuators, i.e. torso, a head, two arms, and two legs, though some humanoid robots may replicate only part of the body, for example, from the waist up. In some cases, humanoid robots are equipped with heads designed to replicate additional human facial features such as eyes. Additional sensors are needed by a robot to gather information about the conditions of the environment to allow the robot to make necessary decisions about its position or certain actions that the situation requires, e.g. an arm movement or an open/close hand action. Other examples for sensor are reflective infrared sensors used to detect objects in proximity.
In this work, we introduce a use-case centered approach based on sensors and actors of a robot and a workflow model to visually describe the sequence of actions including conditional actions or concurrent actions. We provide an in-depth discussion of a new VPL based teaching method for programming humanoid robots based on VPLs. Open research challenges, limits and perspectives for further development of our teaching approach are discussed as well.
This paper presents the elements and the results from the European research project inCASA (Integrated Network for Completely Assisted Senior Citizen’s Autonomy), which designed and implemented a seamless integration of heterogeneous systems and network protocols for regionally distributed telecare and telehealth applications. The integration includes a multitude of physical interface, the transcoding of data models using embedded middleware, and a backend system with open interfaces. The implementation was verified in field tests in five European countries.
During the periods of social isolation to contain the advance of COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, educational institutions have had the challenge to adopt technological strategies not only to ensure continuity in students’ classes, but also to support their mental health in a period of uncertainty and health risks. Loneliness is an emotional distress caused by the lack of meaningful social connections; it has increasingly affected young adults worldwide during the pandemic's social isolation and still bears psychological effects in the current post-pandemic period. In the light of this challenge, the Nonenliness App was developed as a way to bring together university communities to address issues related to loneliness and mental health disorders through a gamified and social online environment. In this paper, we present the app and its main functionalities (Beta version) and discuss the preliminary results of a pilot clinical study conducted with university students in Germany (N = 12) to verify the app's efficacy and usability, alongside the challenges faced and the next steps to be taken regarding the platform's improvement.
The central purpose of this paper is to present a novel framework supporting the specification and the implementation of media streaming services using XML and Java Media Framework (JMF). It provides an integrated service development environment comprising of a streaming service model, a service specification language and several implementation and retrieval tools. Our approach is based on a clear separation of a streaming service specification, and its implementation by a distributed JMF application and can be used for different streaming paradigms, e.g. push and pull services.
Nonlinear acoustic waves are considered that have displacements localized at the tip of an elastic wedge. The evolution equation governing their propagation is discussed and compared with its analogues pertaining to nonlinear acoustic surface and bulk waves. Solitary wave solutions of the evolution equation have been determined numerically for the cases of two rectangular edges which may be viewed as generated by splitting a half-space, consisting of crystalline silicon, into two quarter-spaces. For these two geometries, the kernel in the nonlinear terms of the evolution equation has been calculated from the second-order and third-order elastic constants of silicon, and weak dispersion due to tip truncation has been considered. Solitary pulse shapes have been computed and collisions of solitary pulses have been simulated for various relative speeds of the two collision partners. Collision scenarios for the two wedge geometries were found to differ considerably. Special attention is paid to the peculiar interaction of two initially identical solitary pulses.
The improvements in the hardware and software of communication devices have allowed running Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications on those. Nowadays, it is possible to overlay synthetic information on real images, or even to play 3D on-line games on smart phones or some other mobile devices. Hence the use of 3D data for business and specially for education purposes is ubiquitous. Due to always available at hand and always ready to use properties of mobile phones, those are considered as most potential communication devices. The total numbers of mobile phone users are increasing all over the world every day and that makes mobile phones the most suitable device to reach a huge number of end clients either for education or for business purposes. There are different standards, protocols and specifications to establish the communication among different communication devices but there is no initiative taken so far to make it sure that the send data through this communication process will be understood and used by the destination device. Since all the devices are not able to deal with all kind of 3D data formats and it is also not realistic to have different version of the same data to make it compatible with the destination device, it is necessary to have a prevalent solution. The proposed architecture in this paper describes a device and purpose independent 3D data visibility any time anywhere to the right person in suitable format. There is no solution without limitation. The architecture is implemented in a prototype to make an experimental validation of the architecture which also shows the difference between theory and practice.
Hot forging dies are subjected to high cyclic thermo-mechanical loads. In critical areas, the occurring stresses can exceed the material’s yield limit. Additionally, loading at high temperatures leads to thermal softening of the used martensitic materials. These effects can result in an early crack initiation and unexpected failure of the dies, usually described as thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF). In previous works, a temperature-dependent cyclic plasticity model for the martensitic hot forging tool steel 1.2367 (X38CrMoV5-3) was developed and implemented in the finite element (FE)-software Abaqus. However, in the forging industry, application-specific software is usually used to ensure cost-efficient numerical process design. Therefore, a new implementation for the FE-software Simufact Forming 16.0 is presented in this work. The results are compared and validated with the original implementation by means of a numerical compression test and a cyclic simulation is calculated with Simufact Forming.
3D printing offers customisation capabilities regarding suspensions for oscillators of vibration energy harvesters. Adjusting printing parameters or geometry allows to influence dynamic properties like resonance frequency or bandwidth of the oscillator. This paper presents simulation results and measurements for a spiral shaped suspension printed with polylactic acid (PLA) and different layer heights. Eigenfrequencies have been simulated and measured and damping ratios have been experimentally determined.
WirelessHART protocol was specifically designed for real-time communication in the wireless sensor networks domain for industrial process automation requirements. Whereas the major purpose of WirelessHART is the read-out of sensors with moderate real-time requirements, an increasing demand for integration of actuator applications can be observed. Therefore, it must be verified that the WirelessHART protocol gives sufficient support to real-time industry requirements. As a result, the delay of especially burst and command messages from actuator and sensor nodes to the gateway and vice versa must be analyzed. In this paper, we implemented a WirelessHART network scenario in WirelessHART simulator in NS-2 [8], simulated and analyzed its time characteristics under ideal and noisy conditions. We evaluated the performance of the implementation in order to verify whether the requirements of industrial process and control can be met. This implementation offers an early alternative to expensive test beds for WirelessHART in real-time actuator applications.

Erlang is a functional programming language with dynamic typing. The language offers great flexibility for destructing values through pattern matching and dynamic type tests. Erlang also comes with a type language supporting parametric polymorphism, equi-recursive types, as well as union and a limited form of intersection types. However, type signatures only serve as documentation; there is no check that a function body conforms to its signature.
Set-theoretic types and semantic subtyping fit Erlang’s feature set very well. They allow expressing nearly all constructs of its type language and provide means for statically checking type signatures. This article brings set-theoretic types to Erlang and demonstrates how existing Erlang code can be statically type checked without or with only minor modifications to the code. Further, the article formalizes the main ingredients of the type system in a small core calculus, reports on an implementation of the system, and compares it with other static type checkers for Erlang.
Separation Estimation with Thermal Cameras for Separation Monitoring in Human-Robot Collaboration
(2022)
Human-Robot Collaborative applications have the drawback of being less efficient than their non-collaborative counterparts. One of the main reasons is, that the robot has to slow down when a human being is within the operating space of the robot. There are different approaches on dynamic speed and separation monitoring in human-robot collaborative applications. One approach additionally differentiates between human and non-human objects to increase efficiency in speed and separation monitoring. This paper proposes to estimate the separation distance by measuring the temperature of the approaching object. Measurements show that the measured temperature of a human being decreases with 1 deg C per meter distance from the sensor. This allows an estimation of separation between a robotic system and a human being.
Featherweight Go (FG) is a minimal core calculus that includes essential Go features such as overloaded methods and interface types. The most straightforward semantic description of the dynamic behavior of FG programs is to resolve method calls based on run-time type information. A more efficient approach is to apply a type-directed translation scheme where interface-values are replaced by dictionaries that contain concrete method definitions. Thus, method calls can be resolved by a simple lookup of the method definition in the dictionary. Establishing that the target program obtained via the type-directed translation scheme preserves the semantics of the original FG program is an important task.
To establish this property we employ logical relations that are indexed by types to relate source and target programs. We provide rigorous proofs and give a detailed discussion of the many subtle corners that we have encountered including the need for a step index due to recursive inter- faces and method definitions.
Seismic data processing relies on multiples attenuation to improve inversion and interpretation. Radon-based algorithms are often used for multiples and primaries discrimination. Deep learning, based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has shown encouraging applications for demultiple that could mitigate Radon-based challenges. In this work, we investigate new strategies to train a CNN for multiples removal based on different loss functions. We propose combined primaries and multiples labels in the loss for training a CNN to predict primaries, multiples, or both simultaneously. Moreover, we investigate two distinctive training methods for all the strategies: UNet based on minimum absolute error (L1) training, and adversarial training (GAN-UNet). We test the trained models with the different strategies and methods on 400 synthetic data. We found that training to predict multiples, including the primaries …
Printed electronics can add value to existing products by providing new smart functionalities, such as sensing elements over large-areas on flexible or non-conformal surfaces. Here we present a hardware concept and prototype for a thinned ASIC integrated with an inkjet-printed temperature sensor alongside in-built additional security and unique identification features. The hybrid system exploits the advantages of inkjet-printable platinum-based sensors, physically unclonable function circuits and a fluorescent particle-based coating as a tamper protection layer.
In the present work, nonlinearities in temperature compensating (TC) SAW devices are investigated. The materials used are LiNbO₃-rot128YX as the substrate and Copper electrodes covered with a SiO₂-layer as the compensating layer. In order to understand the role of these materials for the nonlinearities in such acoustic devices, a FEM simulation model in combination with a perturbation approach is applied. The nonlinear tensor data of the different materials involved in TC-SAW devices have been taken from literature, but were partially modified to fit experimental data by introducing scaling factors. An effective nonlinearity constant is determined by comparison of nonlinear P-matrix simulations to IMD3 measurements of test filters. By employing these constants in nonlinear periodic P-matrix simulations a direct comparison to nonlinear periodic FEM-simulations yields the scaling factors for the material used. Thus, the contribution of different materials to the nonlinear behavior of TC-SAW devices is obtained and the role of metal electrodes is discussed in detail.
In this work a set of nonlinear coupled COM equations at interacting frequencies is derived on the basis of nonlinear electro-elasticity. The formalism is presented with the aim of describing intermodulation distortion of third-order (IMD3) and triple beat. The resulting COM equations are translated to the P-matrix formalism, where care is taken to obtain the correct frequency dependence. The scheme depends on two frequency-independent constants for an effective third-order nonlinearity. One of these two constants is negligibly small in the systems considered here. The P-matrix approach is applied to single filters and duplexers on LiTaO 3 (YXl)/42° operating in different frequency ranges. Both IMD3 and triple beat show good agreement with measurement.
We will present the first example of a two-dimensional scanned TLC-plate, measured by use of a diode-array scanner. A spatial resolution of 250 µm was achieved on plate. The system provides real 2D fluorescence and absorption spectra in the wavelength-range from 190 to 1000 nm with a spectral resolution of greater than 1 nm. A mixture of 12 sulphonamides was separated by using a cyanopropyl-coated silica gel plate (Merck, 1.16464) with the solvent mix of methyl tert-butyl ether-methanol-dichloromethane-cyclohexane-NH3 (25%) (48:2:2:1:1, v/v) in the first and with a mixture of water-acetonitrile-dioxane-ethanol (8:2:1:1, v/v) in the second direction. Both developments were carried out over a distance of 70 mm. A separation number (spot capacity) of 259 was calculated. We discussed a new formula for its calculation in 2D-TLC separations. The drawback of this method is that measuring a 2D-TLC plate needs more than 3 h measurement time.
An international study summarizes the threat situation in the OT environment under the heading "Growing security threats" [1]. According to this study, attacks on automation systems are likely to increase in the future. Accordingly, an automation system must be able to protect the integrity of the transmitted information in the future. This requirement is motivated, among other things, by the fact that the network-side isolation of industrial communication systems is no longer considered sufficient as the sole protective measure. This paper uses the example of PROFINET to show how the future requirements for a real-time communication protocol can be met and how they can be derived from the IEC 62443 standard.
PROFINET Security: A Look on Selected Concepts for Secure Communication in the Automation Domain
(2023)
We provide a brief overview of the cryptographic security extensions for PROFINET, as defined and specified by PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI). These come in three hierarchically defined Security Classes, called Security Class 1,2 and 3. Security Class 1 provides basic security improvements with moderate implementation impact on PROFINET components. Security Classes 2 and 3, in contrast, introduce an integrated cryptographic protection of PROFINET communication. We first highlight and discuss the security features that the PROFINET specification offers for future PROFINET products. Then, as our main focus, we take a closer look at some of the technical challenges that were faced during the conceptualization and design of Security Class 2 and 3 features. In particular, we elaborate on how secure application relations between PROFINET components are established and how a disruption-free availability of a secure communication channel is guaranteed despite the need to refresh cryptographic keys regularly. The authors are members of the PI Working Group CB/PG10 Security.
Organized by the Fraunhofer Additive Manufacturing Alliance, the bi-annual Direct Digital Manufacturing Conference brings together researchers, educators and practitioners from around the world. The conference covers the entire range of topics in additive manufacturing, starting with methodologies, design and simulation, right up to more application-specific topics, e.g. from the realm of medical engineering and electronics.
Many different methods, such as screen printing, gravure, flexography, inkjet etc., have been employed to print electronic devices. Depending on the type and performance of the devices, processing is done at low or high temperature using precursor- or particle-based inks. As a result of the processing details, devices can be fabricated on flexible or non-flexible substrates, depending on their temperature stability. Furthermore, in order to reduce the operating voltage, printed devices rely on high-capacitance electrolytes rather than on dielectrics. The printing resolution and speed are two of the major challenging parameters for printed electronics. High-resolution printing produces small-size printed devices and high-integration densities with minimum materials consumption. However, most printing methods have resolutions between 20 and 50 μm. Printing resolutions close to 1 μm have also been achieved with optimized process conditions and better printing technology.
The final physical dimensions of the devices pose severe limitations on their performance. For example, the channel lengths being of this dimension affect the operating frequency of the thin-film transistors (TFTs), which is inversely proportional to the square of channel length. Consequently, short channels are favorable not only for high-frequency applications but also for high-density integration. The need to reduce this dimension to substantially smaller sizes than those possible with today’s printers can be fulfilled either by developing alternative printing or stamping techniques, or alternative transistor geometries. The development of a polymer pen lithography technique allows scaling up parallel printing of a large number of devices in one step, including the successive printing of different materials. The introduction of an alternative transistor geometry, namely the vertical Field Effect Transistor (vFET), is based on the idea to use the film thickness as the channel length, instead of the lateral dimensions of the printed structure, thus reducing the channel length by orders of magnitude. The improvements in printing technologies and the possibilities offered by nanotechnological approaches can result in unprecedented opportunities for the Internet of Things (IoT) and many other applications. The vision of printing functional materials, and not only colors as in conventional paper printing, is attractive to many researchers and industries because of the added opportunities when using flexible substrates such as polymers and textiles. Additionally, the reduction of costs opens new markets. The range of processing techniques covers laterally-structured and large-area printing technologies, thermal, laser and UV-annealing, as well as bonding techniques, etc. Materials, such as conducting, semiconducting, dielectric and sensing materials, rigid and flexible substrates, protective coating, organic, inorganic and polymeric substances, energy conversion and energy storage materials constitute an enormous challenge in their integration into complex devices.
A polarization mode dispersion measurement set-up based on a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer was realized. Measurements were carried out on short high-birefringent fibers and on long standard telecommunication single-mode fibers. In order to ensure high accurate results, special emphasis was placed on the evaluation of the interference pattern. The procedure will be described in detail and practical measurement results will be presented.
This work documents the rising acceptance of social robots for healthcare as well as their growing economic potential from 2017 to 2021. The comparison is based on two studies in the active assisted living (AAL) community. We first provide a brief overview of social robotics and a discussion of the economic potential of social health robots. We found that, despite the huge potential for robotic support in healthcare and domestic routines, social robots still lack the functionality to access that potential. At the same time, the study exemplifies a rise in acceptance: all health-related activities are more accepted in 2021 when in 2017, most of them with high statistical significance. When investigating the economic perspective, we found that persons are aware of the influence of cultural, spiritual, or religious beliefs. Most experts (57%), having a European background, expect the state or the government to be the key driver for establishing social robots in health and significantly prefer leasing or renting a social health robot to buying one. Nevertheless, we speculate that it might be a global financial elite which is first to adopt social robots.
The Transport Layer Security protocol is a widespread cryptographic protocol designed to provide secure communication over insecure networks by providing authenticity, integrity, and confidentiality. As a first step, in the TLS Handshake Protocol a common master secret is negotiated. In many configurations, this step makes considerable use of asymmetric cryptographic algorithms. It seems to be a prevalent assumption that the use of such asymmetric cryptographic algorithms is unsuitable for resource-constrained devices. Therefore, the work at hand analyzes the runtime performance of the TLS vl.2 session establishments on an embedded ARM Cortex-M4 platform. We measure the execution time to generate and parse session establishment messages for the client and server sides. In particular, we study the impact of different elliptic curves used for the ephemeral Diffie-Hellman key exchange and the impact of different lengths and subject public key algorithms of certification paths. Our analysis shows that the use of asymmetric cryptographic algorithms is well possible on resource-constrained devices, if carefully chosen and well implemented. This allows the use of the well-proven TLS protocol also for applications from the (Industrial) Internet of Things, including Fieldbus communication.
During the last ten years the development of wireless sensing applications has become more and more attractive. A major reason for this trend is the large quantity of available wireless technologies. The progressing demand on wireless technologies is mainly driven through development from the industrial wireless sensors market. Especially requirements like low energy consumption, a resource saving simple protocol stack and short timing delays between different states of the wireless transceivers are very important for wireless sensors. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a rather new wireless standard in addition to the traditional Bluetooth standard (Basis rate and enhanced data rate, BR/EDR) [1]. The BLE will completely fulfill these fundamental requirements. First BLE transceiver chips and modules are available and have been tested and implemented in products. In this paper the performance analysis results of a BLE sensor system which is based on the TI transceiver CC2540F [5] will be presented. The results can be taken for further important investigations like lifetime calculations or BLE simulation models.
Printed circuit boards (PCB) are a foundation of electronical devices in modern society. The fabrication of these boards requires various processes and machines. The utilisation of a robot with multiple tools can shorten the process chain compared to screen printing. In this paper a system is presented, which utilises an industrial six axis robot to manufacture
PCBs. The process flow and conversion process of the Gerber format into robot specific commands is presented. The advantages and challenges applying a robot to print circuits are discussed.
Polyarticulated active prostheses constitute a promising solution for upper limb amputees. The bottleneck for their adoption though, is the lack of intuitive control. In this context, machine learning algorithms based on pattern recognition from electromyographic (EMG) signals represent a great opportunity for naturally operating prosthetic devices, but their performance is strongly affected by the selection of input features. In this study, we investigated different combinations of 13 EMG-derived features obtained from EMG signals of healthy individuals performing upper limb movements and tested their performance for movement classification using an Artificial Neural Network. We found that input data (i.e., the set of input features) can be reduced by more than 50% without any loss in accuracy, while diminishing the computing time required to train the classifier. Our results indicate that input features must be properly selected in order to optimize prosthetic control.
Modern industrial production is heavily dependent on efficient workflow processes and automation. The steady flow of raw materials as well as the separation of vital parts and semi-finished products are at the core of these automated procedures. Commonly used systems for this work are bowl feeders, which separate the parts and material by a combination of mechanical vibration and friction. The production of these tools, especially the design of the ramping spiral, is delicate and time-consuming work, as the shape, slope, and material must be carefully adjusted for the corresponding parts. In this work, we propose an automated approach, making use of optimization procedures from artificial intelligence, to design the spiral ramps of the bowl feeders. Therefore, the whole system and considered parts are physically simulated and the optimized geometry is subsequently exported into a CAD system for the actual building, respectively printing. The employment of evolutionary optimization gives the need to develop a mathematical model for the whole setup and find an efficient representation of integral features.
The prototype of an optical gyro encoder (OGE) has been successfully tested on the NTT telescope in September '93. The OGE consists of a ring laser gyro and a fiber optic gyro with their input axis parallel. The gyro outptu signals are compensated for earth rotation and misalignment and are subsequently integrated to get the angles. An adaptive digital control loop locks the fiber optic gyro to the laser gyro data. Thus the combined output has the precision of the laser gyro and the low noise of the fiber optic gyro. Specifically, the bias stability is better than 2 X 10-3 deg/h, the scale factor accuracy better than 1 ppm, the random walk coefficient better than 5 X 10-4 deg/(root)h and the resolution better than 3 X 10-4 arcsec. The OGE has been mounted in the altitude and in the azimuthy axis of the telescope. The data were compared with the telescope disk encoder data. The test data show that the pointing accuracy is about 1 arcsec and the tracking accuracy 0.1 arcsec over a time of 30 seconds. This accuracy is sufficient for the very large telescope, for instance.
The nonlinear behavior of inverters is largely impacted by the interlocking and switching times. A method for online identifying the switching times of semiconductors in inverters is presented in the following work. By being able to identify these times, it is possible to compensate for the nonlinear behavior, reduce interlocking time, and use the information for diagnostic purposes. The method is first theoretically derived by examining different inverter switching cases and determining potential identification possibilities. It is then modified to consider the entire module for more robust identification. The methodology, including limitations and boundary conditions, is investigated and a comparison of two methods of measurement acquisition is provided. Subsequently the developed hardware is described and the implementation in an FPGA is carried out. Finally, the results are presented, discussed, and potential challenges are encountered.
Following their success in visual recognition tasks, Vision Transformers(ViTs) are being increasingly employed for image restoration. As a few recent works claim that ViTs for image classification also have better robustness properties, we investigate whether the improved adversarial robustness of ViTs extends to image restoration. We consider the recently proposed Restormer model, as well as NAFNet and the "Baseline network" which are both simplified versions of a Restormer. We use Projected Gradient Descent (PGD) and CosPGD for our robustness evaluation. Our experiments are performed on real-world images from the GoPro dataset for image deblurring. Our analysis indicates that contrary to as advocated by ViTs in image classification works, these models are highly susceptible to adversarial attacks. We attempt to find an easy fix and improve their robustness through adversarial training. While this yields a significant increase in robustness for Restormer, results on other networks are less promising. Interestingly, we find that the design choices in NAFNet and Baselines, which were based on iid performance, and not on robust generalization, seem to be at odds with the model robustness.
On the possibility to use leaky feeders for positioning in chirp spread spectrum technologies
(2014)
Real Time Localization Systems using electromagnetic waves have significantly evolved during the last years. They also might be used in industrial and in mining environments. Here, topologies might include tunnels, where it might be difficult to ensure the field coverage. Leaky feeder cables are a common solution in case of normal radio communication. In this paper, we study the possibilities to use leaky feeders also for Time-of-Flight based real time localization in such linear topologies, like tunnels, but possibly also for 2D-localization. Theoretical analysis is verified with real-life measurements, which were performed using Chirp Spread Spectrum Technologies.
This paper presents an approach where closer integration between learning and work is achieved by integrating multimedia services into manufacturing processes. The goal of E-Learning services integration in manufacturing processes is, through the development of new multimedia services, to accelerate and enhance the ability of manufacturing industry to capitalise on the emergence of a powerful global information infrastructure. In this paper we suggest to combine the areas of media streaming services and manufacturing processes, by providing electronic learning offerings as collections of media streaming services. The key components of our approach are 1) an xml based streaming service specification language, 2) automated configuration of distributed E-Learning streaming applications, 3) Web Services for searching, registration, and creation of E-Learning streaming services.
Anisotropy has been found to play an important role for the existence of edge-localized acoustic modes as well as for nonlinear effects in rectangular edges. For a certain propagation geometry in silicon, the effective second-order nonlinearity for wedge waves was determined numerically from second-order and third-order elastic moduli and compared with the nonlinearity for Rayleigh waves propagating in the direction of the apex on one of the two surfaces forming the edge. In the presence of weak dispersion resulting from modifications of the wedge tip or coating of the adjacent surfaces, solitary pulses are predicted to exist and their shape was calculated.
In thin-layer chromatography, fiber-bundle arrays have been introduced for spectral absorption measurements in the UV-region. Using all-silica fiber bundles, the exciting light will be detected after re-emission on the plate with a fiberoptic spectrometer. In addition, fluorescence light can be detected which will be masked by the re-emitted light. Therefore, it is helpful to separate the absorption and fluorescence on the TLC-plate. A modified three-array assembly has been developed: using one array for detection, the two others are used for excitation with broadband band deuterium-light and with UV-LEDs adjusted to the substances under test. As an example, the quantification of glucosamine in nutritional supplements or spinach leaf extract will be described. Using simply heating of the amino-plate for derivation, the reaction product of Glucosamine can be detected sensitively either by light absorption or by fluorescence, using the new fiber-optic assembly. In addition, the properties of the new 3-row fiber-optic array and the commercially available UV-LEDs will be shown, in the interesting wavelength region for excitation of fluorescence, from 260 nm to 360 nm. The squint angle having an influence on coupling efficiency and spatial resolution will be measured with the inverse farfield method. Some properties of UV-LEDs for analytical applications will be described and discussed, too.
The central purpose of this paper is to present a novel framework supporting the specification, the implementation and retrieval of media streaming services. It provides an integrated service development environment comprising of a streaming service model, a service specification language and several implementation and retrieval tools. Our approach is based on a clear separation of a streaming service specification, and its implementation by a distributed application and can be used for different streaming paradigms, e.g. push and pull services.
This study focuses on the autonomous navigation and mapping of indoor environments using a drone equipped only with a monocular camera and height measurement sensors. A visual SLAM algorithm was employed to generate a preliminary map of the environment and to determine the drone's position within the map. A deep neural network was utilized to generate a depth image from the monocular camera's input, which was subsequently transformed into a point cloud to be projected into the map. By aligning the depth point cloud with the map, 3D occupancy grid maps were constructed by using ray tracing techniques to get a precise depiction of obstacles and the surroundings. Due to the absence of IMU data from the low-cost drone for the SLAM algorithm, the created maps are inherently unscaled. However, preliminary tests with relative navigation in unscaled maps have revealed potential accuracy issues, which can only be overcome by incorporating additional information from the given sensors for scale estimation.
Monitoring of the molecular structure of lubricant oil using a FT-Raman spectrometer prototype
(2014)
The determination of the physical state of the lubricant materials in complex mechanical systems is highly critical from different points of view: operative, economical, environmental, etc. Furthermore, there are several parameters that a lubricant oil must meet for a proper performance inside a machine. The monitoring of these lubricants can represent a serious issue depending on the analytical approach applied. The molecular change of aging lubricant oils have been analyzed using an all-standard-components and self-designed FT-Raman spectrometer. This analytical tool allows the direct and clean study of the vibrational changes in the molecular structure of the oils without having direct contact with the samples and without extracting the sample from the machine in operation. The FT-Raman spectrometer prototype used in the analysis of the oil samples consist of a Michelson interferometer and a self-designed photon counter cooled down on a Peltier element arrangement. The light coupling has been accomplished by using a conventional 62.5/125μm multi-mode fiber coupler. The FT-Raman arrangement has been able to extract high resolution and frequency precise Raman spectra, comparable to those obtained with commercial FT-Raman systems, from the lubricant oil samples analyzed. The spectral information has helped to determine certain molecular changes in the initial phases of wearing of the oil samples. The proposed instrument prototype has no additional complex hardware components or costly software modules. The mechanical and thermal irregularities influencing the FT-Raman spectrometer have been removed mathematically by accurately evaluating the optical path difference of the Michelson interferometer. This has been achieved by producing an additional interference pattern signal with a λ= 632.8 nm helium-neon laser, which differs from the conventional zero-crossing sampling (also known as Connes advantage) commonly used by FT-devices. It enables the FT-Raman system to perform reliable and clean spectral measurements from the analyzed oil samples.
The conversion of space heating for private households to climate-neutral energy sources is an essential component of the energy transition, as this sector as of 2018 was responsible for 9.4 % of Germany’s carbon dioxide emissions. In addition to reducing demand through better insulation, the use of heat pumps fed with electricity from renewable energy sources, such as on-site photovoltaics (PV) systems, is an important solution approach.
Advanced energy management and control can help to make optimal use of such heating systems. Optimal here can e.g. refer to maximizing self-consumption of self-generated PV power, extended component lifetime or a grid-friendly behavior that avoids load peaks. A powerful method for this is model predictive control (MPC), which calculates optimal schedules for the controllable influence variables based on models of the system dynamics, current measurements of system states and predictions of future external influence parameters.
In this paper, we will discuss three different use cases that show how artificial intelligence can contribute to the realization of such an MPC-based energy management and control system. This will be done using the example of a real inhabited single family home that has provided the necessary data for this purpose and where the methods are implemented and tested. The heating system consists of an air-water heat pump with direct condensation, a thermal stratified storage tank, a pellet burner and a heating rod and provides both heating and hot water. The house generates a significant portion of its electricity needs through a rooftop PV system.
In the recent two years the authors have developed a light weight and low power flight control system for model helicopters consisting of an attitude and heading reference system (AHRS), a navigator (INS) augmented with GPS, barometric altitude sensor and a magnetic sensor, a flight control computer (FCC) and bidirectional ground data links. The system has been tested on a commercial stunt flight model helicopter. The AHRS consists of three MEMS-gyros, two 2-axis MEMS accelerometers and a microcontroller performing the required sensor compensation and data processing to generate attitude angles and true rate and acceleration data of the flying platform. The heading angle is augmented with a 2-axis magnetic sensor. The AHRS is stunt flight capable. The INS integrates the acceleration data to obtain velocity and position data. All data are calculated in both the helicopter and the local earth frame with 50 Hz rate. The algorithm is augmented with GPS data for the lateral movement and with a barometric altitude sensor for the vertical movement. The barometric data are compensated for air pressure changes due to the helicopter main rotor. The FCC contains a set of control loops in order to stabilize the helicopter in all axis and to perform commanded velocity and position tasks. The sampling rate for the control loops is again 50 Hz allowing flight control with high bandwidth. Various safety features are implemented in the software. The bidirectional data link is based on a 2.4 GHz Bluetooth Class I RF-link with a 115 kbaud data rate. A dipole antenna is used on the helicopter, an automatically tracking patch antenna is used on the ground. For commanded velocity flight a standard 35 MHz RF-link is used. For data sampling, monitoring and mode control a laptop is used on the ground. Several operating modes are implemented ranging from commanded velocity flight to simple automatic stunt flight according to predefined flight tracks. The model helicopter is an ALIGN TREX 600 with 3 kg flight mass and a brushless electric motor. The rotor diameter is 1.40 m. The helicopter is able to carry a payload which mass depends on the size of the installed LiPo-cells and the purpose of the flight mission. The system has been tested in quite a few flight tests and missions. The helicopter is controlled safely up to wind loads of at least 5 Beaufort - 6 Beaufort. Data and video captures will be presented. If permission is granted, a demonstration flight will be performed on the premises of the conference.
In the field of smart metering it can be observed that standardized protocol, like Wireless M-Bus or ZigBee, enjoy a rapidly increasing popularity. For the protocol implementations, however, up to now, mostly legacy engineering processes and technologies are used, and modern approaches such as model driven design processes or open software platform are disregarded. Therefore, within the WiMBex project, it shall be demonstrated that it is possible to develop a commercial class Wireless M-Bus implementation following state-of-the art design process and using TinyOS as an open source platform. This contribution describes the overall approach of the project, as well as the state and the first experiences of the current work in progress.
TSN, or Time Sensitive Networking, is becoming an essential technology for integrated networks, enabling deterministic and best effort traffic to coexist on the same infrastructure. In order to properly configure, run and secure such TSN, monitoring functionality is a must. The TSN standard already has some preparations to provide such functionality and there are different methods to choose from. We implemented different methods to measure the time synchronisation accuracy between devices as a C library and compared the measurement results. Furthermore, the library has been integrated into the ControlTSN engineering framework.
One of the major challenges impeding the energy transition is the intermittency of solar and wind electricity generation due to their dependency on weather changes. The demand-side energy flexibility contributes considerably to mitigate the energy supply/demand imbalances resulting from external influences such as the weather. As one of the largest electricity consumers, the industrial enterprises present a high demand-side flexibility potential from their production processes and on-site energy assets. In this direction, methods are needed with a focus on enabling the energy flexibility and ensure an active participation of such enterprises in the electricity markets especially with variable prices of electricity. This paper presents a generic model library for an industrial enterprise implemented with optimal control for energy flexibility purposes. The components in the model library represent the typical technical units of an industrial enterprise on material, media, and energy flow levels with their operative constraints. A case study of a plastic manufacturing plant using the generic model library is also presented, in which the results of two simulation with different electricity prices are compared and the behavior of the model can be assessed. The results show that the model provides an optimal scheduling of the manufacturing system according to the variations in the electricity prices, and ensures an optimal control for utilities and energy systems needed for the production.
In anisotropic media, the existence of leaky surface acoustic waves is a well-known phenomenon. Very recently, their analogs at the apex of an elastic silicon wedge have been found in experiments using laser-ultrasonics. In addition to a wedge-wave (WW) pulse with low speed, a pseudo-wedge wave (p-WW) pulse was found with a velocity higher than the velocity of shear bulk waves, propagating in the same direction. With a probe-beam-deflection technique, the propagation of the WW pulses was monitored on one of the faces of the wedge at variable distance from the apex. In this way, their depth structure and the leakage of the p-WW could be visualized directly. Calculations were carried out using a method based on a representation of the displacement field in Laguerre functions. This method has been validated by calculating the surface density of states in anisotropic media and comparing the results with those obtained from the surface Green's tensor. The approach has then been extended to the continuum of acoustic modes in infinite wedges with fixed wave-vector along the apex. These calculations confirmed the measured speeds of the WW and p-WW pulses.
Kundendaten im E-Commerce – Optimierungspotenzial im Checkout-Prozess des deutschen Online-Handels
(2023)
The authors set the focus in this paper on the description of polarization with the help of the Jones calculus and the application of polarization in photography. Furthermore, the effect of the circular polarization filter is described by using the Jones calculus. Also, an enhancement of artistic and creative possibilities in photography through quantization or parametrization by the Jones matrices is presented.
Investigation on Bowtie Antennas Operating at Very Low Frequencies for Ground Penetrating Radar
(2023)
The efficiency of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems significantly depends on the antenna performance as the signal has to propagate through lossy and inhomogeneous media. GPR antennas should have a low operating frequency for greater penetration depth, high gain and efficiency to increase the receiving power and should be compact and lightweight for ease of GPR surveying. In this paper, two different designs of Bowtie antennas operating at very low frequencies are proposed and analyzed.
Skin cancer detection proves to be complicated and highly dependent on the examiner’s skills. Millimeter-wave technologies seem to be a promising aid for the detection of skin cancer. The different water content of the skin area affected by cancer compared to healthy skin changes its reflective property. Due to limited available resources on the dielectric properties of skin cancer, especially in comparison to surrounding healthy skin, accurate simulations and evaluations are quite challenging. Therefore, comparing different results for different approaches and starting points can be difficult. In this paper, the Effective Medium Theory is applied to model skin cancer, which provides permittivity values dependent on the water content.
Data is ever increasing in the computing world. Due to advancement of cloud technology the dynamics of volumes of data and its capacity has increased within a short period of time and will keep increasing further. Providing transparency, privacy, and security to the cloud users is becoming more and more challenging along with the volume of data and use of cloud services. We propose a new approach to address the above mentioned challenge by recording the user events in the cloud ecosystem into log files and applying MAR principle namely 1) Monitoring 2) Analyzing and 3) Reporting.
A simple model is introduced that describes the interaction of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) with a 2D periodic array of objects on the surface that give rise to internal resonances. Such objects may be high-aspect ratio structures like micro-pillars fabricated of a material different from that of the substrate. The model allows for an approximate determination of the band structure for the acoustic modes in such systems. Results are presented for the dependence on structural parameters of a total bandgap in the non-radiative regime of a semi-infinite substrate, and it is shown how the frequency and radiation damping of vibrational modes can be determined that are associated with defects in the periodic 2D array.
The automatic processing of handwritten forms remains a challenging task, wherein detection and subsequent classification of handwritten characters are essential steps. We describe a novel approach, in which both steps - detection and classification - are executed in one task through a deep neural network. Therefore, training data is not annotated by hand, but manufactured artificially from the underlying forms and yet existing datasets. It can be demonstrated that this single-task approach is superior in comparison to the state-of-the-art two task approach. The current study focuses on hand-written Latin letters and employs the EMNIST data set. However, limitations were identified with this data set, necessitating further customization. Finally, an overall recognition rate of 88.28% was attained on real data obtained from a written exam.
Having 22 GW of nominal power installed Germany is the leading nation in wind energy conversion. While the number of suitable installation sites ashore is limited, and the average windspeed and thus the utilization level offshore is significantly higher, more and more offshore wind farms are planned. In order to reduce the cost of building the foundations and of connecting the wind turbines to the power grid, the single plant is designed as powerful as possible and therefore the components become huge and weighty. For instance: In order to lift the nacelle with around 500 tons of weight up on the tower - which can be up to 120 m above the water level - at the time special ships and cranes are designed and built. But those firstly will be very expensive and secondly will be available only on a limited scale. Hence the installation cost of those huge wind turbines significantly influence the rentability of a wind farm. Against this background a joint research project supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) was started comprising the project partners Ed. Züblin AG, Berg-idl GmbH (an engineering company and a maker of special purpose machines in Altlußheim, Germany), the IPEK (institute for product development) at the university of Karlsruhe and the Hochschule Offenburg, university of applied science. Project target is the conceptual design of a heavy-duty elevator, which can be used to install the tower segments and the nacelle of a wind turbine offshore without a crane. The most relevant challenges in this context result of holding up extreme loads by means of comparatively filigree carrying structures. The paper shows some examples of structural analysis and optimization work accomplished during the project. For the structural analysis of the heavy loaded components ANSYS workbench was used. The development process was also supported by optimization tools like TOSCA and OPTIMUS. The linking of the FE solver and the optimizer provides important hints concerning improvement of the topology and the dimensions of the components. Examples of designs illustrate the development process and the methods applied.
